Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis Jan 2008

Review And Analysis Of International And Budgetary Considerations For The 2007 U.S. Farm Bill, Bashir Qasmi, Evert Van Der Sluis

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

We assess the extent to which national budget considerations, international trade negotiations, and domestic political deliberations affect the potential development of an omnibus farm bill, which may be signed into law in 2008. With no successful conclusion of the Doha Development Round of trade negotiations in sight, U.S. legislators appear unable to make politically unpopular decisions on domestic farm policy reform. However, the absence of an international trade agreement does not reduce the need for the U.S. to comply with previous agreements.

The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen Jan 2008

The Efficacy Of The Grid Marketing Channel For Fed Cattle, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Beef industry data suggest that beef carcass yield and quality grades have shown little improvement over the last six years. Empirical analysis, based on USDA public market reports, indicates that the share of steer slaughter volume marketed on a grid is less than industry estimates and the growth in grid market share of total steer slaughter is stagnate. Trend analysis of grid market share and carcass quality suggests that grid pricing has not made sufficient progress in achieving the goals envisioned for it as a value based marketing system. We conclude additional research on producer resistance to selling on a …

The Analysis Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Biological Samples, Brian A. Logue, Diane M. Hinkens

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Cyanide is a toxic chemical that may be introduced to living organisms as a result of both legal and illicit uses of cyanide. Exposure to cyanide can be verifi ed by analyzing cyanide or one of its break-down products from biological samples. This verifi cation is important for medical, law-enforcement, forensic, research, and veterinary purposes. This review will identify common problems associated with the analysis of cyanide and its metabolites, discuss current bioanalytical techniques used for verifi cation of cyanide exposure, and briefl y address the metabolism and toxicokinetics of cyanide and its break-down products in biological systems.

Evaluation Of An Augmentation Of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep At Badlands National Park, South Dakota, Teresa J. Zimmerman Jan 2008

Evaluation Of An Augmentation Of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep At Badlands National Park, South Dakota, Teresa J. Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Audubon’s (a.k.a. Badlands) bighorn (Ovis canadensis auduboni [Merriam 1901] now O. c. Canadensis [Shaw 1804]), described as a subspecies of bighorn sheep, was extirpated from its range by 1924. In 1964, 22 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep were translocated from Pikes Peak, Colorado, to Badlands National Park (BNP) in southwestern South Dakota. Based on the estimated effective population size and analysis of molecular data, the bighorn sheep population at BNP underwent a population bottleneck at founding. Recommendations to restore genetic diversity in the BNP population included a mixed-sex augmentation (n > 30) from an outbred, native population of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. …

Documented Struggles And Triumph: African American Art, Holbrook Lauren Jan 2008

Documented Struggles And Triumph: African American Art, Holbrook Lauren

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The emergence of African Americans as artists began in the Colonial Era with simple portraits. The first African American artist to gain recognition as a portraitist was Joshua Johnston who worked in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The majority of his portraits were of wealthy European American families, who were slave owners (Fig. 1). Johnston was formerly a slave, and as rumors suggests, his former owner was also a portraitist from which Johnston acquired his skills. Interestingly, Johnston did not sign or date any of his works (Lewis 15). It seems as though a suggestion to his name …

Is Hypnosis An Appropriate Conjunctive Treatment For Dental Phobia?, Zach Mccready

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper was written to explore the use of hypnosis as a conjunctive treatment. A brief history of hypnosis from ancient times to modern practice is presented as well as public views, mechanisms, effects, uses, evidence, and dentistry-specific case studies. Hypnosis has been both widely accepted and rejected, and its methods and uses have evolved over time. Current research has found neurophysiological evidence to support the use of hypnosis, and it has been successfully used in various fields of practice. No single indicator can prove the phenomenon and its effectiveness is the result of a complex set of procedures. Hypnosis …

Nesting And Brood-Rearing Success And Resource Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse In Northwestern South Dakota, Nicholas W. Kaczor Jan 2008

Nesting And Brood-Rearing Success And Resource Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse In Northwestern South Dakota, Nicholas W. Kaczor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding population dynamics and resource selection is crucial in developing wildlife resource management plans, particularly for sensitive species. Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) populations have declined range-wide at a rate of 2% per year from 1965 to 2003. In South Dakota, populations have generally declined. Reasons for the decline are mostly attributed to human-induced factors such as sagebrush degradation and removal, improper range management practices, oil and gas exploration, and West Nile virus infection. Sage-grouse occupy habitats at the eastern edge of their range in western South Dakota. We conducted a 2-year study to investigate the nesting and brood-rearing ecology of …

Implant treatments included (1) control (nonimplanted), (2) Synovex Plus, (3) revalor-s, and (4) Ralgro-revalor-s. The Synovex Plus (2), revalor-s (3) and Ralgro (4) were administered on day 1. The reimplant with revalor-s (4) was admnistered after 56 d on feed. Steers were managed in two groups. Initial BW and days fed were 782 lb, 131 d (Group I), and 661 lb, 145 d (Group II). Implants increased production rates and efficiencies, increased carcass size and reduced marbling when compared to …

15n Effects On Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Ryan Geraets, Brett Kollars Jan 2008

15n Effects On Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Ryan Geraets, Brett Kollars

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Non-radioactive isotopic labeling has become a regular technique for efficiently labeling a wide range of macromolecules. The overall goal for this project was to develop a method of globally measuring plant protein turnover rates. In order to do so, an isotopic labeled environment that does not induce stress had to be used. The objective of this particular segment of research was to develop a 15N-labeled Tris-Acetate-Phosphate (TAP) media in which Chlamydomonas reinhardtii can successfully grow without eliciting stressed physiological responses. Our results illustrate that we have successfully developed 15N-labeled TAP that does not stress Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Tillage Erosion Coefficients For Selected Tillage Tools, Javier Mollinendo Jan 2008

Tillage Erosion Coefficients For Selected Tillage Tools, Javier Mollinendo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil loss as a result of differential translocation of soil by tillage is widespread in regions with irregular topography. Tillage erosion models are based on field derived transport coefficients that are specific to the tillage tool being used. Variables like speed and depth of tillage can modify tillage erosion transport coefficients. Four treatments were established for this research: moldboard plow, chisel plow, tandem disk, and no-till drill. The primary research site was located in Rock County MN, 43° 39 '40.24 "N, and 96° 24' 17.25" W, with a fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Cumulic Endoaquolls (USDA, 2006). The objectives of this …

Clostridium Perfringens Infections In Baby Calves, Russ Daly, Lori Rotert Dec 2007

Clostridium Perfringens Infections In Baby Calves, Russ Daly, Lori Rotert

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Illnesses and death losses in baby calves are significant problems for producers raising calves in beef or dairy operations. Several of these issues, especially sudden deaths and certain enteric (intestinal) conditions, are potential effects of infections due to Clostridium perfringens. Clostridium perfringens are Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacteria that are very commonly found in many environments, including soil, water, poorly preserved feeds, contaminated or improperly thawed colostrum or milk, calf-housing environments, and the normal bovine intestinal tract. In small amounts, these bacteria are generally harmless in the intestine, but under the right conditions they may grow and proliferate, resulting in enterotoxemia, …
