Creep Feeding Beef Calves, Eric Mousel, Cody Wright, Julie Walker, Heather Gessner May 2010

Creep Feeding Beef Calves, Eric Mousel, Cody Wright, Julie Walker, Heather Gessner

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Creep feeding is a way to provide nursing calves with supplemental nutrients with the use of a gate that restricts the access of cows to the feeding area. The type of creep feeds available vary from grain-based feeds that primarily supplement energy, to limit-fed high-protein feeds, to “green creeps,” which are high-quality pastures grown for the sole purpose of grazing by nursing calves. Creep feeding for the purpose of increasing weaning weight alone may not be profitable; therefore, the decision to creep feed calves should be based on the analysis of expected increases in performance and income compared to the …

La Enfermedad Respiratoriaen Los Terneros Lecheros, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly May 2010

La Enfermedad Respiratoriaen Los Terneros Lecheros, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Rates Of Bone Loss In Young Adult Males, Bonny L. Specker, Howard Wey, Eric P. Smith Apr 2010

Rates Of Bone Loss In Young Adult Males, Bonny L. Specker, Howard Wey, Eric P. Smith

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Osteoporosis-related fractures occur more frequently in women compared with men, but mortality is greater in men compared with women. Peak bone mass is a significant predictor of osteoporosis and fracture risk; therefore, it is important to optimize peak bone mass during young adulthood. Several recent longitudinal studies, which are summarized in this article, have investigated bone changes among young men. Cortical bone loss does not appear to be significant until individuals reach their mid-30s and is associated with decreased sex hormone concentrations. Significant trabecular bone loss in young men aged in their 20s has been reported and is associated with …

Wet Weather: Lameness And Mastitis, Alvaro Garcia Apr 2010

Wet Weather: Lameness And Mastitis, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Early spring can be exceptionally wet because of rain and melting snow. Muddy conditions resulting from the wet weather constrain best management practices; animals, feed, and the environment can all be negatively affected. Under these conditions, two major ailments can affect dairy cows: 1) mastitis due to environmental bacteria and 2) lameness. Cows with mastitis decrease production, have greater treatment costs, and can eventually be culled or die. Lame cows incur higher production losses, lower fertility, and greater culling rates. Deaths due to lameness or injury increased 60% between 1996 and 2007, and lameness continues to be the second highest …

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly Apr 2010

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Respiratory disease is the second leading cause of death losses (scours is the first) in un-weaned heifer calves. Respiratory problems have increased by 34 percent in the last 20 years, causing nearly 21 percent of all newborn calf losses (NAHMS 2007). Heifers that survive continue to perform poorly as adult cows. In order to prevent this costly problem, it is important to address both determinant and predisposing causes.

Consumer Return Chronology Alters Recovery Trajectory Of Stream Ecosystem Structure And Function Following Drought, Justin N. Murdock, Keith B. Gido, Walter K. Dodds, Katie N. Bertrand, Matt R. Whiles Apr 2010

Consumer Return Chronology Alters Recovery Trajectory Of Stream Ecosystem Structure And Function Following Drought, Justin N. Murdock, Keith B. Gido, Walter K. Dodds, Katie N. Bertrand, Matt R. Whiles

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Consumers are increasingly being recognized as important drivers of ecological succession, yet it is still hard to predict the nature and direction of consumer effects in nonequilibrium environments. We used stream consumer exclosures and large outdoor mesocosms to study the impact of macroconsumers (i.e., fish and crayfish) on recovery of intermittent prairie streams after drying. In the stream, macroconsumers altered system recovery trajectory by decreasing algal and macroinvertebrate biomass, primary productivity, and benthic nutrient uptake rates. However, macroconsumer influence was transient, and differences between exclosures and controls disappeared after 35 days. Introducing and removing macroconsumers after 28 days resulted mainly …

Flooding: Response And Recovery, E. Kim Cassel, Donna Bittiker, Sharon Guthmiller

SDSU Extension Special Series

Floods are the most common natural disaster, but not all floods are alike. Regardless of the cause of flooding, disaster planning and preparation will reduce the impact of flooding and enhance response and recovery. In the event of moderate-to-severe flooding, total mitigation may not be possible. If your property has sustained flood damage, the following are issues to consider as you begin cleanup.

Precauciones Al Suministrar Alimentos Contaminados Con Micotoxinas, Alvaro Garcia, Bob Thaler Mar 2010

Precauciones Al Suministrar Alimentos Contaminados Con Micotoxinas, Alvaro Garcia, Bob Thaler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Reducing Costs Of Delivering Feed To Cattle - Supplementation Frequency, Adele Harty, Kenneth C. Olson Mar 2010

Reducing Costs Of Delivering Feed To Cattle - Supplementation Frequency, Adele Harty, Kenneth C. Olson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Winter supplementation of beef cattle is an important economic and production decision that producers make each year. Supplementation is often necessary to overcome nutrient deficiencies to allow adequate cattle performance. However, supplementation is an expensive input cost, par-ticularly with current high feed prices and deliv¬ery costs. The initial decision is about the correct type and amount of feed to use as the supplement, with the goal to provide the needed nutrients at the least feed cost. After this decision, opportuni¬ties for reducing other costs of supplementation should be considered. One option that can have a major impact on input costs …

Recent Experimental And Clinical Findings In The Skeleton Associated With Loss Of Estrogen Hormone Or Estrogen Receptor Activity, Eric P. Smith, Bonny Specker, Kenneth S Korach Feb 2010

Recent Experimental And Clinical Findings In The Skeleton Associated With Loss Of Estrogen Hormone Or Estrogen Receptor Activity, Eric P. Smith, Bonny Specker, Kenneth S Korach

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Studies on rodent models and rare human disorders of estrogen production or response have revealed an increased complexity of the actions of estrogen on bone. ERalpha disruption in human males results in delayed epiphyseal maturation, tall stature, trabecular thinning, marked cortical thinning, genu valgum and significantly reduced cortical vBMD, but trabecular number is preserved and there is normal to increased periosteal expansion. Aromatase deficiency results overall in a similar phenotype, although less is known about skeletal architecture. Importantly, estrogen replacement in these individuals, even if provided late in the third decade, may normalize aBMD. Less certain is whether there is …
