Uncertainty And Producer Fed Cattle Marketing Decisions: Theory And Evidence, Scott Fausti, Brent Lange
Uncertainty And Producer Fed Cattle Marketing Decisions: Theory And Evidence, Scott Fausti, Brent Lange
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The effect of carcass quality uncertainty on the structure of the slaughter cattle market is investigated. A theoretical extension of the “Theory of Factor Price Disparity” is provided. It is demonstrated that the coexistence of a risk premium wedge between pricing mechanisms (live wt., dressed wt., and grid) in conjunction with varying degrees of risk aversion across fed cattle producers explains the coexistence of multiple pricing mechanisms. It is also demonstrated that risk and risk preference provides a plausible explanation for the structure of the fed cattle market and for the variability in slaughter volume across marketing channels. Empirical evidence …
Understanding The Cost Of Horse Ownership, Tracey Renelt
Understanding The Cost Of Horse Ownership, Tracey Renelt
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Even though many consider horse ownership a hobby and a pleasure, there are costs associated with owning a horse. In fact, it has been said that the cheapest part of horse ownership is the initial purchase. With that in mind, potential horse owners need to be aware of these costs upfront.

Preference Of White-Tailed Deer For Corn Hybrids And Agricultural Husbandry Practices During The Growing Season, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Lowell E. Schmitz, Jonathan A. Jenks
Preference Of White-Tailed Deer For Corn Hybrids And Agricultural Husbandry Practices During The Growing Season, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Lowell E. Schmitz, Jonathan A. Jenks
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Damage to field corn (Zea mays) by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can be substantial, resulting in millions of dollars lost annually. Numerous methods exist to minimize deer depredation, but all have met with varying degrees of success. Currently, little information is available on preference of white-tailed deer for corn hybrids during the growing season and how that preference might affect depredation patterns. We used adult female white-tailed deer in captivity to study the effect of herbicide treatments on deer-use (treatment versus no treatment) of corn in 2005 and to document preference among specific corn hybrids in …

Grasshopper Outlook On Rangelands: 2011, Martin Beutler, Roger Gates, Bruce Helbig
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Grasshoppers are often found to be a significant problem for both farmers and ranchers. Even though grasshoppers are a normal component of a forage ecosystem and generally exert minimal disturbance, problems occur when conditions lead to grasshop¬per populations that increase to the point where they cause millions of dollars of damage. Grasshopper outbreaks are the result of a complex combination of factors. Several factors are beyond the control of managers. However, the “pasture microcli¬mate” (the immediate environment where grasshop¬pers hatch, grow, and reproduce) may be subject to subtle manipulation. Because grasshopper outbreaks are progressive and cumulative, small interruptions or reductions …
Feeding Horses In The Winter, Rebecca Bott
Feeding Horses In The Winter, Rebecca Bott
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
On average, a mature horse will need to consume between 1.5 and 2% of dry feed based on their total body weight each day. For a 1,200-pound horse, this means that they would be eating roughly 24 pounds (1,200 pounds x .02) of dry feed daily. Let’s assume that properly handled hays and grains are 90% dry material; this means that 10% is in the form of water, rather than dry nutrients. We would need to add 10% to the total amount fed to our horse, meaning the average 1,200-pound horse will eat approximately 26–27 pounds of feed each day. …

Walking To Mourning Doves: A Memoir, Caryl Crozier
Walking To Mourning Doves: A Memoir, Caryl Crozier
South Dakota State University, Alumni Publications
Preface: Waking to Mourning Doves
Waking to the soulful call of a mourning dove shortly after my mother’s death gave me the inspiration for my book title. Their plaintive cooing evokes nostalgic reminders of my life growing up on rural South Dakota prairies in the 1940s and 1950s, a memory of the simpler times of my youth. Soft spring mornings, gentle breezes stirring the curtains and a cacophony of birdsong and farm animal sounds define contentment to me. Their cooing still evokes the same feeling that all is right with the world. Mourning doves are unassuming, not flashy and don’t …

Effects Of Block Predator Management On Duck And Pheasant Nest Success In Eastern South Dakota, Nicholas R. Docken
Effects Of Block Predator Management On Duck And Pheasant Nest Success In Eastern South Dakota, Nicholas R. Docken
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nest success is the biggest limiting factor governing waterfowl production in the Prairie Pothole Region which supports greater than 50% of North America’s breeding duck population. Depredation by predators accounts for 80% or more of nest losses each year (Klett 1988). Township size block predator management (BPM) has been effective at increasing duck nest success in North Dakota and Canada, but no BPM work has been done in South Dakota. There has also been no research on the effects of BPM on pheasants. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing duck and pheasant nest success …

Anxiety And Visual Discriminations In Undergraduates, Katherine Bowers
Anxiety And Visual Discriminations In Undergraduates, Katherine Bowers
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mathematics tests were used to create anxiety in undergraduates. Heart rates were recorded as a measure of anxiety. Following each mathematics test, participants completed a different visual discrimination tasks, Stroop Colored Word Tests, Where’s Waldo Puzzles, and IQ Matching Tests. Reaction times and accuracy were measured for each task. The hypothesis was that those with more difficult mathematics tests would have longer reaction times and be less accurate. The results of the study suggest that mathematics anxiety did not have a significant effect on reaction times for any task, and was only significant for the accuracy of the IQ matching …
