Soybeans: 2001 Crop Performance Results, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Circulars

Successful soybean production is greatly affected by variety selection for a given growing area. This publication reports the agronomic performance of entries in the 2001 South Dakota performance trials for conventional (non-Roundup Ready) and RoundupReady™ soybean varieties. Important factors in variety selection include yield, maturity, plant height, lodging resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. In the case of public varieties, additional information including emergence, shattering, and iron chlorosis scores (Table A) are available to assist in making variety selections.

China's Wheat Production Projections And Implications For Imports, Bashir Qasmi, Yunqing Wang, Scott Fausti, Han Kim Nov 2001

China's Wheat Production Projections And Implications For Imports, Bashir Qasmi, Yunqing Wang, Scott Fausti, Han Kim

Economics Staff Paper Series

Wheat production in China is analyzed using a seven-region model and data for 1978-1997. The empirical results indicate; 1) the area planted to wheat in China is responsive to the real wheat procurement price, 2) contrary to prior expectations, the growth in GNP, a proxy for industrialization and urbanization, did not seem to impact the wheat area significantly, 3) wheat yield showed a significant upward trend in all regions over time, depicting combined impacts of increased chemical fertilizer use, expansion of irrigated areas, increased investment, and other technological improvements, and 4) Chinese wheat production is projected to range from 132.33 …

Feeding And Managing Dairy Calves And Heifers, David J. Schingoethe, Alvaro Garcia Nov 2001

Feeding And Managing Dairy Calves And Heifers, David J. Schingoethe, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

If improved breeding and management practices are followed heifers will most likely be better than the cows in the dairy herd today. Costs of raising a heifer to 24 months of age may range between $800 and $1,500 depending on the farm. If heifers calve at more than 24 months of age, $2 per day are lost in feed, herd replacements and lifetime production. Although reducing the calving age may have a positive impact on profitability, heifers must grow at an optimal rate to avoid calving problems and to have a successful first lactation. Some practices recommended for raising heifers …

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs Oct 2001

Selected Economic Implications And Policy Aspects Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Evert Van Der Sluis, Matthew Diersen, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

The paper provides an overview of the types of economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of the US domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed in the paper are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a 'science-based' regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding …

An Empirical Investigation In To The Factors Influencing The Economic Incentive To Retain Ownership Of Weaned Steer Calves, Scott Fausti, Brad Johnson, William Epperson, Nancy Grathwohl Sep 2001

An Empirical Investigation In To The Factors Influencing The Economic Incentive To Retain Ownership Of Weaned Steer Calves, Scott Fausti, Brad Johnson, William Epperson, Nancy Grathwohl

Economics Staff Paper Series

Marketing and production data collected from weaned calves (628 head) in a university sponsored retained ownership demonstration program are analyzed to identify factors affecting the annualized rate of return when retaining ownership versus selling the calves at weaning. Data were collected on the following characteristics associated with the calves: 1) ranch-of-origin production management practices; 2) feedlot performance; 3) carcass merit; 4) health history; and 5) market prices. Retained ownership until slaughter was more profitable, on average, when compared to selling calves at weaning. The calculated annualized rate of return to retained ownership versus selling calves at weaning averaged 11.5% per …

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi Sep 2001

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi

Economics Staff Paper Series

Barriers to the adoption of grid pricing by fed cattle producers are investigated over a 206-week period (Jan. 1997 to Dec. 2000). The empirical findings document: I) when fed cattle are evaluated on a grid pricing system versus a dressed weight pricing system, a price differential per cwt. and a per-head revenue differential exists over time, 2) the price differential per cwt. is subject to seasonal variation which contributes to inconsistent price signals transmitted to producers concerning the market value of carcass characteristics over time; 3) grid revenue per-head variability is consistently higher than dressed weight revenue per-head variability over …

Growing Asparagus, David F. Graper, Rhoda Burrows Sep 2001

Growing Asparagus, David F. Graper, Rhoda Burrows

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Asparagus is an ancient vegetable, having been cultivated for over 2000 years. An ancient Roman author, Cato the Elder, in 200 B.C. wrote detailed directions for growing asparagus that are close to current recommendations. There are a number of species, but only one, Asparagus officinalis L., is cultivated for food. Asparagus is a favorite spring vegetable, both for its earliness and its distinctive taste. Not only is it low in calories, asparagus is an excellent source of vitamin A and contains significant amounts of calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Although commercial asparagus production in the United States is concentrated …

Fall 2001 Thistle Spraying, Leon Wrage, Darrel Deneke Sep 2001

Fall 2001 Thistle Spraying, Leon Wrage, Darrel Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Opportunities for fall spraying have improved considerably with significant precipitation over a wide area. Prior to that, regrowth was slow and growth diminished. Early frost in some areas did not affect Canada thistle foliage and the outlook for warm, sunny weather (60 to 70F) is excellent for response to fall spraying. Best spraying opportunities are for: pasture, roadsides, and CRP that were mowed, grazed, or sprayed with 2,4-D in early season. It is also a good opportunity to have access to fencelines. Guidelines for each are suggested.
