Private Placement Of Common Equity And Earnings Expectations, Jeremy C. Goh, Michael Gombola, Hai Wei Lee, Feng Ying Liu Aug 1999

Private Placement Of Common Equity And Earnings Expectations, Jeremy C. Goh, Michael Gombola, Hai Wei Lee, Feng Ying Liu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Earnings forecast revisions by analysts subsequent to the announcement of private equity placements are examined. Results show that analysts make significant upward revisions to their forecasts for current-year earnings. Furthermore, these forecast revisions are significantly related to announcement-period abnormal returns, but not to the risk changes accompanying the equity placement. These findings are consistent with the information hypothesis, which suggests that private equity placements convey favorable information about future earnings.

Selection Of Expatriates For Regional Business Operations In Asia: A Study Of Mne Managers In Singapore, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan, Thian Ser Toh Aug 1999

Selection Of Expatriates For Regional Business Operations In Asia: A Study Of Mne Managers In Singapore, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan, Thian Ser Toh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The recent interest for regionalization of business operations in Asia underscores the demand for expatriates. While much has been written on expatriation, very little was documented on expatriates assigned in Asian countries. In this respect, American, German, Japanese and Korean MNEs have been found to take active interests in regional expansion of business in Asia. Expatriation is a significant international management issue for them. The high costs of expatriation and the risks for expatriate failures also underscore this importance. As such, selecting the right candidate for expatriation success is a crucial issue for these MNEs. This paper presents the findings …

Artificial Intelligence Approach To Analyzing The Bullwhip Effect In Supply Chains, C. Qing, Keng Siau Aug 1999

Artificial Intelligence Approach To Analyzing The Bullwhip Effect In Supply Chains, C. Qing, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supply chain management critically affects businesses’ abilities to obtain and sustain competitive advantages. The bullwhip effect, however, presents a challenge for successful supply chain management by amplifying demands in the supply chains. This paper presents a systematic approach to tackle the issue of bullwhip effect. Firstly, we define the supply chain under a multiagent framework. Secondly, the group problem solving paradigm, which is a rule learning approach, is proposed to enhance the decision making process within the supply chain framework. The group problem solving paradigm is also suggested as a means to alleviate the bullwhip effect. The paper concludes with …

Commercial Satellite Imagery Comes Of Age, Ann Florini, Yahya Dehqanzada Aug 1999

Commercial Satellite Imagery Comes Of Age, Ann Florini, Yahya Dehqanzada

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Since satellites started photographing Earth from space nearly four decades ago, their images have inspired excitement, introspection, and, often, fear. Like all information, satellite imagery is in itself neutral. But satellite imagery is a particularly powerful sort of information, revealing both comprehensive vistas and surprising details. Its benefits can be immense, but so can its costs.

Experience As Art, Sor-Hoon Tan Jul 1999

Experience As Art, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Chinese philosophy views experience as intrinsically aesthetic. This world view could be elucidated through a consideration of John Dewey's aesthetics and features of Chinese art. Dewey's philosophy of art starts with an understanding of experience as 'live processes' of living creatures interacting with their environment. Such processes are autopoietic in being self-sustaining, ever-changing, capable of increasing complexity, capable of generating novelty, direction and progress on its own. Its autopoietic character is a precondition of the aesthetic in the process of experience. An aesthetic experience is rhythmic, focused, consummatory, and reaches beyond the transitory boundaries of concrete existence. The aesthetic is …

Views From The Drugs Summit, Mark Findlay Jul 1999

Views From The Drugs Summit, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The jury is still out on whether the Drugs Summit was a political set piece. The Opposition participants regularly accused the Government of just that. Without doubt, however, it was the reaction of the Opposition which was orchestrated and pre-conceived.

A Simultaneous Model For Innovative Product Category Sales Diffusion And Competitive Dynamics, Namwoon Kim, Ellen Bridges, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava Jun 1999

A Simultaneous Model For Innovative Product Category Sales Diffusion And Competitive Dynamics, Namwoon Kim, Ellen Bridges, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Diffusion of innovation has been the focus of an entire stream of research in marketing, and firm entry and exit decisions have been investigated by marketers, strategists, and economists. However, little attention has been paid to the relationship between changing demand and the entry and exit behaviors of competitors in the marketplace. Understanding this relationship is essential in making resource commitments, as profitability of options depends not only on the size and growth of the market, but also on the number of competitors likely to be encountered. This is particularly important in innovative markets, where changes occur rapidly and one …

Running On The Spot? A Review Of Twenty Years Of Research On The Management Of Human Resources In Comparative And International Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Howard Gospel, John Montgomery Jun 1999

Running On The Spot? A Review Of Twenty Years Of Research On The Management Of Human Resources In Comparative And International Perspective, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Howard Gospel, John Montgomery

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research using a comparative and international perspective on the management of human resources is examined, drawing on articles published in leading human resource management, management/ organizational behaviour and related social science journals between 1977 and 1997. In total a little under 2 per cent of the articles under review focused on the management of human resources in a comparative and international perspective. The largest group of these articles was comparative in nature (44 per cent), followed by those with an international perspective (35 per cent). A smaller number adopted a combined approach (17 per cent) and a few were separately …

Contextual Effects On The Revision Of Evaluative Judgements: An Extension Of The Omission Detection Framework, A. V. Muthukrishnan, Seshan Ramaswami Jun 1999

Contextual Effects On The Revision Of Evaluative Judgements: An Extension Of The Omission Detection Framework, A. V. Muthukrishnan, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

When consumers are presented with negative information about a brand that they have evaluated positively earlier, the extent to which they change their initial evaluation may depend on the formats in which information is presented (non-comparative vs. comparative) at the two stages. In four experiments, we manipulate the format in which information is presented at an initial and at a challenge stage and investigate their effects on the degree of revision in evaluative judgments. The results of the four experiments suggest that when consumers receive initial information in a noncomparative format, a comparative challenge causes a greater degree of revision …

Camera Break Detection By Partitioning Of 2d Spatio-Temporal Images In Mpeg Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 1999

Camera Break Detection By Partitioning Of 2d Spatio-Temporal Images In Mpeg Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a new approach to detect camera cuts and wipes. The approach projects a video into two images representing the spatio-temporal continuity of a video life. Visually, these images are composed by regions of different patterns, each region represents the temporal location of a shot. The shape of a region boundary inherently classifies cut and wipe, and most importantly, marks the start and end of a wipe sequence. We hence formulate algorithms to locate the color and texture discontinuities occurring at the boundaries of image regions.

The Effectiveness Of Expert Support Technology For Decision Making: Individuals Versus Small Groups, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jiye Mao, Izak Benbasat Jun 1999

The Effectiveness Of Expert Support Technology For Decision Making: Individuals Versus Small Groups, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jiye Mao, Izak Benbasat

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Expert support systems (ESSs) are increasingly used in organizations to support individuals and groups in decision making. Although ESSs have been shown to enhance the decision-making capabilities of individuals, their benefits in supporting group decision making are less clear. To the best of our knowledge, no empirical research has evaluated the effectiveness of the technology in the group setting or compared its usefulness for supporting individual versus group decision making. The results of this research show that ESSs benefit decision making of both individuals and groups and novices are able to gain more from ESSs than experts. The findings also …

Globalisation And Singaporean Transmigration: Re-Imagining And Negotiating National Identity, Lily Kong Jun 1999

Globalisation And Singaporean Transmigration: Re-Imagining And Negotiating National Identity, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Within the context of globalisation that confronts the world today, I aim in this paper to illustrate one particular state's attempts at constructing a 'nation' amidst efforts to encourage its citizens to globalise, actions which are ostensibly, or at least, potentially, contradictory; and to analyse how these citizens who became transmigrants construct and negotiate their sense of 'nation' and national identity. Specifically, my empirical questions centre on Singaporean transmigrants working in China. I ask the following questions. What happens to the sense of national identity among Singaporeans and their relationship with the 'nation' when confronted with transnational conditions? What are …

Estimating A Transformation And Its Effect On Box-Cox T-Ratio, Zhenlin Yang Jun 1999

Estimating A Transformation And Its Effect On Box-Cox T-Ratio, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article concerns i) the stochastic behavior of the Box-Cox transformation estimator and ii) the effect of estimating a transformation on the Box-CoxT-ratio used for the post-transformation analysis. It is shown that the transformation estimator depends on three factors: the model structure, the mean-spread and the error standard deviation σ0. In general, a structured model is able to estimate the transformation very well; an unstructured model can do well also unless the mean-spread and σ0 are both small; and a one-mean mode can give a poor-estimate if σ0 is small. When the sample is not large, it is shown that …

Detection Of Gradual Transitions Through Temporal Slice Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. C. Pong, R. T. Chin Jun 1999

Detection Of Gradual Transitions Through Temporal Slice Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. C. Pong, R. T. Chin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present approaches for detecting camera cuts, wipes and dissolves based on the analysis of spatio-temporal slices obtained from videos. These slices are composed of spatial ly and temporal ly coherent regions which can be perceived as shots. In the proposed methods, camera breaks are located by performing color-texture segmentation and statistical analysis on these video slices. In addition to detecting camera breaks, our methods can classify the detected breaks as camera cuts, wipes and dissolves in an efficient manner

The Determinants Of Bid-Ask Spreads In The Foreign Exchange Futures Markets: A Microstructure Analysis, David K. Ding May 1999

The Determinants Of Bid-Ask Spreads In The Foreign Exchange Futures Markets: A Microstructure Analysis, David K. Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates and analyzes the intraday and daily determinants of bid-ask spreads in the foreign exchange futures market. It is found that the number of transactions is negatively related to the BAS, whereas volatility in general is positively related to it. The study also finds that there are economies of scale in trading FXF contracts. The intraday BAS follows a U-shaped pattern, and they tend to be higher on Mondays and Tuesdays than on other days of the week. Higher spreads at the beginning and end of a trading day are consistent with the presence of adverse selection and …

A Meta-Analysis Of Satisfaction In Marketing Channel Relationships, Inge Geyskens, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp, Nirmalya Kumar May 1999

A Meta-Analysis Of Satisfaction In Marketing Channel Relationships, Inge Geyskens, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors advance a conceptual model of channel member satisfaction that distinguishes between economic and noneconomic satisfaction. The resulting model then is tested using meta-analysis, Meta-analysis enables the empirical investigation of a model involving several constructs that never have been examined simultaneously within an individual study. More specifically, the authors unify the stream of research on power use-the focus of many satisfaction studies in the 1970s and 1980s-with more recent work on trust and commitment, which usually explores antecedents other than power use. The results indicate that economic satisfaction and noneconomic satisfaction are distinct constructs with differential relationships to various …

Instructional Case: Worldwide Shipping Corporation Ltd: Early Or Late Adoption Of A New International Accounting Ssandard?, Pearl Tan, Peter Lee

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The management of Worldwide Shipping Corp. Ltd. is confronted with a dilemma when a new international accounting standard on leases is introduced which contains a transitional provision allowing firms to defer implementation for a period of 4 years. Students are required to put themselves in the position of managers who have to weigh the adverse impact of early adoption of the new accounting standard against a responsibility for fair financial reporting. The case aims to provide students with a better understanding of the impact of off-balance sheet transactions on a firm's financial statements. The case requires students to examine implications …

Notepals: Lightweight Note Sharing By The Group, For The Group, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay, Victor Chen, Jonathan Huang, Rebecca B. Lee, Francis Li, James Lin, Charles B. Morrey, Morgan N. Price, Bill N. Schilit May 1999

Notepals: Lightweight Note Sharing By The Group, For The Group, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay, Victor Chen, Jonathan Huang, Rebecca B. Lee, Francis Li, James Lin, Charles B. Morrey, Morgan N. Price, Bill N. Schilit

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

NotePals is a lightweight note sharing system that gives group members easy access to each others experiences through their personal notes. The system allows notes taken by group members in any context to be uploaded to a shared repository. Group members view these notes with browsers that allow them to retrieve all notes taken in a given context or to access notes from other related notes or documents. This is possible because NotePals records the context in which each note is created (e.g., its author, subject, and creation time). The system is lightweight because it fits easily into group members …

Information Modeling And Method Engineering: A Psychological Perspective, Keng Siau Apr 1999

Information Modeling And Method Engineering: A Psychological Perspective, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information modeling is the cornerstone of information systems analysis and design. Information models, the products of information modeling, not only provide the abstractions required to facilitate communication between the analysts and end users, but they also provide a formal basis for developing tools and techniques used in information systems development. The process of designing, constructing, and adapting information modeling methods for information systems development is known as method engineering. Despite the pivotal role of modeling methods in successful information systems development, most modeling methods are designed based on common sense and intuition of the method designers with little or no …

Pi-Web Join In A Web Warehouse, Sourav S. Bhowmick, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the enormous amount of data stored in the World Wide Web, it is increasingly important to design and develop powerful web warehousing tools. The key objective of our web warehousing project, called WHOWEDA (Warehouse of Web Data), is to design and implement a web warehouse that materializes and manages useful information from the Web. In this paper, we introduce the concept of Pi-web join in the context of WHOWEDA. Pi-web join operator is a web information manipulation operator to combine relevant web information residing in two web tables. Informally, it is the combination of web join and web project …

The Empirical Determinants Of Inventory Levels In High-Volume Manufacturing, Marvin B. Lieberman, Susan Helper, Lieven Demeester Mar 1999

The Empirical Determinants Of Inventory Levels In High-Volume Manufacturing, Marvin B. Lieberman, Susan Helper, Lieven Demeester

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study uses survey data on several hundred automotive suppliers in North America to evaluate the determinants of inventory levels in high-volume discrete parts manufacturing. We assess the magnitude of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods inventories held at automotive supply plants. Inventories are shown to be jointly determined by technological and managerial factors in a manner roughly consistent with classical inventory theory. Several categories of managerial practices are found to be important. Low inventories are linked to employee problem solving and frequent communication with customers. More unexpectedly, we find the absence of inventory differences between U.S.-owned and Japanese-owned plants …

Inventory Reduction And Productivity Growth: Linkages In The Japanese Automotive Industry, Marvin B. Lieberman, Lieven Demeester Mar 1999

Inventory Reduction And Productivity Growth: Linkages In The Japanese Automotive Industry, Marvin B. Lieberman, Lieven Demeester

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The literature on JIT production suggests a causal link between work-in-progress inventory and manufacturing productivity. Such a connection has been described in numerous case studies but never tested statistically. Historical data for 52 Japanese automotive companies are used to evaluate the inventory-productivity relationship. It is found that firms increased their productivity rank during periods of substantial inventory reduction. More detailed tests suggest that inventory reductions stimulated gains in productivity. On average, each 10% reduction in inventory led to about a 1% gain in labor productivity, with a lag of about one year. Such effects were more immediate for Toyota affiliates, …

Cemetaries And Columbaria, Memorials And Mausoleums: Narrative And Interpretation In The Study Of Deathscapes In Geography, Lily Kong Mar 1999

Cemetaries And Columbaria, Memorials And Mausoleums: Narrative And Interpretation In The Study Of Deathscapes In Geography, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper reviews research on deathscapes, particularly by geographers in the last decade, and argues that many of the issues addressed reflect the concerns that have engaged cultural geographers during the same period. In particular, necrogeographical research reveals the relevance of deathscapes to theoretical arguments about the social constructedness of race, class, gender, nation and nature; the ideological underpinnings of landscapes, the contestation of space, the centrality of place and the multiplicity of meanings. This paper therefore highlights how the focus on one particular form of landscape reveals macro-cultural geographical research interests and trends.

Introduction: Are We Requiring What Our Students Most Need?, Michael Alan Netzley Mar 1999

Introduction: Are We Requiring What Our Students Most Need?, Michael Alan Netzley

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Why devote a special issue to the topic of writing requirements for business students? The answer, I believe, is relatively simple: any such requirement mustreflect what business professionals should know and do in a knowledge economy.Because communication practices are changing radically, our requirements, too, must be reexamined. This issue provides a forum for such reexamination.

The First Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Legislative Council Elections, James T. H. Tang Mar 1999

The First Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Legislative Council Elections, James T. H. Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Legislative Council (Legco) Elections in Hong Kong on May 24, 1998, isthe first open multiparty electoral competition in the People's Republic of China(PRC). Since Chinese leaders have repeatedly rejected Western-style democracyor multiparty competition for China, the extent to which the Hong Kong experiencewould serve as a model for political developments on the mainland isclearly limited. Nonetheless, political changes in Hong Kong has to be seen aspart of China's experience following their reunion. Under the "one country, twosystems" formula, Hong Kong is given the freedom to conduct its own internalaffairs as a Special Administrative Region (SAR), but the formation of …

Resource Scheduling In A High-Performance Multimedia Server, Hwee Hwa Pang, Bobby Jose, M. S. Krishnan Mar 1999

Resource Scheduling In A High-Performance Multimedia Server, Hwee Hwa Pang, Bobby Jose, M. S. Krishnan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Supporting continuous media data-such as video and audio-imposes stringent demands on the retrieval performance of a multimedia server. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a set of data placement and retrieval algorithms to exploit the full capacity of the disks in a multimedia server. The data placement algorithm declusters every object over all of the disks in the server-using a time-based declustering unit-with the aim of balancing the disk load. As for runtime retrieval, the quintessence of the algorithm is to give each disk advance notification of the blocks that have to be fetched in the impending time periods, …

Differential Emphases On Modernity And Confucian Values In Social Categorization: The Case Of Hong Kong Adolescents In Political Transition, Shui-Fong Lam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ying-Yi Hong, Si-Qing Peng Mar 1999

Differential Emphases On Modernity And Confucian Values In Social Categorization: The Case Of Hong Kong Adolescents In Political Transition, Shui-Fong Lam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ying-Yi Hong, Si-Qing Peng

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study investigated if modernity and Confucian values were ingroups positively valued distinctiveness for Hong Kong adolescents with different social identities. Participants (236 Hong Kong adolescents) filled out a questionnaire which tapped social identity and intergroup perception. They also participated in a card-sorting activity in which they decided if any of 20 attributes (e.g., advanced, respecting collective will) could be used to characterize a specific ethnic–social group (e.g., mainland Chinese, Hongkongers, Americans). Multidimensional scaling performed on the card-sorting data resulted in a two-dimensional solution. Emphasis on Dimension 1 (modernity) correlated with positive perception of Hong Kong and Hong Kong people …

Language Use As Carrier Of Social Identity, Yuk-Yue Tong, Ying-Yi Hong, Sau-Lai Lee, Chi-Yue Chiu Mar 1999

Language Use As Carrier Of Social Identity, Yuk-Yue Tong, Ying-Yi Hong, Sau-Lai Lee, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the present study, we examined the relationship of social identity (Hongkonger or Chinese) and the attitudes toward bilingual code switching in a conversation between a Hong Kong person and a Chinese Mainlander. Students from a local university in Hong Kong (N = 159) listened to a four-turn conversation between a Hong Kong person and a Mainlander in a wedding party. As expected, when the speaker converged to the Putonghua (the Mainland official language), those who claimed a Hongkonger identity judged the Hong Kong speaker less favourably than did those who claimed a Chinese identity. In addition, participants who claimed …

Social Comparison During Political Transition: Interaction Of Entity Versus Incremental Beliefs And Social Identities, Ying-Yi Hong, Chi-Yue Chiu, Grace Yeung, Jennifer Y. Y. Tong Mar 1999

Social Comparison During Political Transition: Interaction Of Entity Versus Incremental Beliefs And Social Identities, Ying-Yi Hong, Chi-Yue Chiu, Grace Yeung, Jennifer Y. Y. Tong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The relation between intergroup perceptions and peoples implicit theories of the malleability of human attributes or character was examined. We predicted that people who believe that human attributes are fixed (entity theorists) may also view a group as an entity and thus would rely on trait-based dimensions in social comparison to achieve group distinctiveness. By contrast, people who believe that human attributes are malleable (incremental theorists) may focus on the dynamic aspects of social groups (e.g., group goals) and thus would be less likely to rely on trait-based dimensions in social comparison. Moreover, such differential tendency was expected to become …

Transparency Of Ownership And Control In Germany, Marco Becht, Ekkehart Boehmer Feb 1999

Transparency Of Ownership And Control In Germany, Marco Becht, Ekkehart Boehmer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We first analyze legal provisions relating to corporate transparency in Germany. We show that despite the new securities trading law (WpHG) of 1995, the practical efficacy of disclosure regulation is very low. On the one hand, the formation of business groups involving less regulated legal forms as intermediate layers can substantially reduce transparency. On the other hand, the implementation of the law is not practical and not very effective. We illustrate these arguments using several examples of WpHG filings. To illustrate the importance of transparency, we show next that German capital markets are dominated by few large firms accounting for …
