Endogenous Tariff Formation With Intra-Industry Trade, Pao-Li Chang Aug 2002

Endogenous Tariff Formation With Intra-Industry Trade, Pao-Li Chang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Previous theoretical contributions on endogenous tariff formation have focused on trade models with homogeneous goods and constant returns to scale. This paper investigates the political equilibrium of trade policy when economic structure is instead characterized by differentiated products and increasing returns to scale and there exists intra-industry trade. The result shows that endogenous tariffs are positive for all industries with non-negligible shares of world production. However, the level of protection is less than the optimal tariff that would otherwise be imposed by a benevolent government in an unorganized industry, and higher in an organized industry. The protection provided to all …

Analyzing Unified Modeling Language Using Concept Mapping, Keng Siau, Z. Shen Aug 2002

Analyzing Unified Modeling Language Using Concept Mapping, Keng Siau, Z. Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a visual modeling language for object-oriented software development. Although the Object Management Group (OMG) adopted UML as its standard modeling language in 1997, the consensus in the academic community and the industry is that further research is needed to evaluate, enhance, extend, and formalize UML. A substantial amount of research has been conducted to this end, but most was based on common sense, informal observation, and intuition. Systematic and empirical studies to analyze, evaluate, and enhance UML have been lacking. This paper attempts to evaluate and study UML from a cognitive perspective. Specifically, the …

These personalized portfolios created are saved and can be subsequently tracked and shared with other users. The paper runs through an example to show …

Solving The Pickup And Delivery Problem With Time Windows Using "Squeaky Wheel" Optimization With Local Search, Hongping Lim, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues Aug 2002

Solving The Pickup And Delivery Problem With Time Windows Using "Squeaky Wheel" Optimization With Local Search, Hongping Lim, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Windows (PDPTW) is an important problem in fleet planning where decisions can involve not only dispatching company fleets but also the selection of carriers on certain routes. In this problem, vehicles travel to a variety of locations to deliver or pick up goods and to provide services. The increasing costs for additional vehicles motivate managers to optimize fleet usage. Managers also seek to achieve economical use of fuel, maintenance and overtime costs by minimizing travel distance and duration. As such, PDPTW impacts the interface of supplier-customer relationship management in the supply chain process …

Trying To Understand The Different Pieces Of The Construct Validity Puzzle Of Assessment Centers: An Examination Of Assessor And Assessee Effects, Filip Lievens Aug 2002

Trying To Understand The Different Pieces Of The Construct Validity Puzzle Of Assessment Centers: An Examination Of Assessor And Assessee Effects, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined the effects of assessor-related factors (i.e., type of assessor) and assessee-related factors (i.e., type of assessee profile) on the construct validity of assessment center ratings. In particular, 3 types of assessors (26 industrial/organizational [I/O] psychologists, 20 managers, and 27 students), rated assessee performances that varied according to cross-exercise consistency (i.e., relatively inconsistent vs. relatively consistent) and dimension differentiation (relatively undifferentiated vs. relatively differentiated). Construct validity evidence was established for only one assessee profile and only in the I/O psychologist and managerial samples. More generally, these results indicate that 3 factors (poor design, assessor unreliability, and especially cross-situational …

Integrating Local Search And Network Flow To Solve The Inventory Routing Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Q Liu, H. Ono Jul 2002

Integrating Local Search And Network Flow To Solve The Inventory Routing Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Q Liu, H. Ono

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The inventory routing problem is one of important and practical problems in logistics. It involves the integration of inventory management and vehicle routing, both of which are known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we combine local search and network flows to solve the inventory management problem, by utilizing the minimum cost flow sub-solutions as a guiding measure for local search. We then integrate with a standard VRPTW solver to present experimental results for the overall inventory routing problem, based on instances extended from the Solomon benchmark problems.

Culture And Its Consequences For Entrepreneurship, Gerard George, Shaker A Zahra

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This special issue of the Journal "Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice" focuses on the relationship between culture and entrepreneurship. It adopts a broad definition of both culture and entrepreneurship. Culture is used to refer to the enduring set of values of a nation, a region, or an organization. Entrepreneurship is defined as the act and process by which societies, regions, organizations, or individuals identify and pursue business opportunities to create wealth. The articles in this special issue highlight opportunities for future research, both theoretical and empirical. These studies offer a preliminary roadmap for conducting influential and insightful research that can enrich …

Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer Jul 2002

Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Successful application of concurrent development processes (concurrent engineering) requires tight coordination. To speed development, tasks often proceed in parallel by relying on preliminary information from other tasks, information that has not yet been finalized. This frequently causes substantial rework using as much as 50% of total engineering capacity. Previous studies have either described coordination as a complex social process, or have focused on the frequency, but not the content, of information exchanges. Through extensive fieldwork in a high-end German automotive manufacturer, we develop a framework of preliminary information that distinguishes information precision and information stability. Information precision refers to the …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Asia-Pacific region form a major arena of increasing interest for overseas business operations. In this regard, human resource development (HRD) issues are found to play significant roles in major international business decisions. Yet little is known about the international HRD programs and practices employed by companies to train and develop managers for this dynamic region. This paper presents the empirical findings of a study on the relative importance of training on several key factors that are crucial to companies for their managers to succeed in overseas assignments in the Asia Pacific region. The study is based on a sample of …

Leadership Antecedents Of Informal Knowledge Acquisition And Dissemination, Siu Loon Hoe, Steve Mcshane Jul 2002

Leadership Antecedents Of Informal Knowledge Acquisition And Dissemination, Siu Loon Hoe, Steve Mcshane

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge management is emerging as one of the leading influences on an organisation’s survival and competitive advantage (Blumentritt & Johnston 1999). Knowledge management is concerned with the effective acquisition, sharing, storage and utilisation of knowledge (Huber 1991; Saffady 1998). Corporate leaders are increasingly aware of the notion that an organisation’s long-term survival depends on its ability to generate new knowledge and continuously learn from the environment. The importance of a superior organisational learning capability as a source of competitive advantage is a common refrain among both managers and scholars (e.g. Kohli & Jaworski 1990; Nonaka 1991; Quinn 1992; Slater & …

Fast Filter-And-Refine Algorithms For Subsequence Selection, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hao Wang, Limsoon Wong, Cui Yu Jul 2002

Fast Filter-And-Refine Algorithms For Subsequence Selection, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hao Wang, Limsoon Wong, Cui Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large sequence databases, such as protein, DNA and gene sequences in biology, are becoming increasingly common. An important operation on a sequence database is approximate subsequence matching, where all subsequences that are within some distance from a given query string are retrieved. This paper proposes a filter-and-refine algorithm that enables efficient approximate subsequence matching in large DNA sequence databases. It employs a bitmap indexing structure to condense and encode each data sequence into a shorter index sequence. During query processing, the bitmap index is used to filter out most of the irrelevant subsequences, and false positives are removed in the …

Exchange-Rate Systems And Interest-Rate Behavior: The Experience Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yiu Kuen Tse, Paul S. L. Yip Jul 2002

Exchange-Rate Systems And Interest-Rate Behavior: The Experience Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yiu Kuen Tse, Paul S. L. Yip

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we consider the implications of the two different exchange-rate systems in Hong Kong (HK) and Singapore (SP) on the economic performance of these two economies. While HK has a pegged exchange-rate regime under a currency board system (CBS), SP has a managed-float system with monitoring band. We examine whether the managed-float system of SP provides an advantage over the rigid CBS of HK in mitigating the recession caused by the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC), and the implications of the differences in the exchange-rate systems on interest-rate behaviour. Our empirical results show that the monitoring band system in …

The Impact Of Housing Prices On Aggregate Consumption: Evidence From An East Asian City-State, Sock-Yong Phang Jul 2002

The Impact Of Housing Prices On Aggregate Consumption: Evidence From An East Asian City-State, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Using aggregate consumption data for Singapore, this paper rejects the life-cycle/permanent income and myopia hypotheses as explanations for aggregate consumption behavior. We confirm the presence of liquidity constraints from the asymmetric reaction of consumption to income increases vis-a-vis income declines. When we allow for asymmetric response, anticipated house price increases appear to have a dampening effect on aggregate consumption while declines in expected house price growth also had a negative effect on consumption, although the results are statistically insignificant. There is no evidence that the housing price increases have produced either wealth or collateral enhancement effects on consumption.

The Implications Of Technology Networks On Diffusion And Economic Growth, Hing-Man Leung Jul 2002

The Implications Of Technology Networks On Diffusion And Economic Growth, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

After the record-breaking run of high-speed growth in the United States during the late 1990s, a pressing question is Has anything fundamental changed in our growth engine? This paper examines an IT-led endogenous growth model driven by technology diffusion. Diffusion is in turn driven by network effect embodied in new technologies. The equilibrium long-term growth rate is however found to be independent of such technology networks. A novelty in our model is that innovation is discontinuous and it is separated by periods of diffusion. This (IT) network-diffusion is shown to be Sigmoid, and diffusion speed is slower than socially optimal.

A Modified Family Of Power Transformations, Zhenlin Yang Jul 2002

A Modified Family Of Power Transformations, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

A modified family of power transformation, called the Dual Power Transformation, is proposed, which overcomes the truncation problem of the Box-Cox power transformation. The new transformation possesses properties similar to those of the Box-Cox power transformation. It generates a rich family of distributions that is seen to be very useful in modeling and analysis of economic durations and medical/engineering event-times. Further, it gives rise to transformed (regression) models such that all the standard asymptotic results of the maximum likelihood theory apply. Empirical results presented are more favorable to the new transformation than to the Box-Cox power transformation in terms of …

Before they can be implemented on a large scale, however, several research issues must be addressed.

Digital Libraries To Knowledge Portals: Towards A Global Knowledge Portal For Secondary Schools In Singapore, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Chu Keong Lee, Ee Peng Lim, Zehua Liu Jul 2002

Digital Libraries To Knowledge Portals: Towards A Global Knowledge Portal For Secondary Schools In Singapore, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Chu Keong Lee, Ee Peng Lim, Zehua Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For digital libraries to remain relevant in the new millennium where the ability to manage knowledge is critical, this paper explores how digital libraries could strategically be evolved into knowledge portals to encapsulate knowledge creation, management, sharing and reusability, features evidently lacking in most conventional digital libraries. Two digital library scenarios of use in education are described and implemented as knowledge portals using G-Portal and the Greenstone software. We hope that the initial work carried out on these two portal-like DLs will eventually form part of a Global Knowledge Portal for Secondary Schools in Singapore. Keywords Digital libraries, information portals, …

Beware Of The Dog: Assaults In Prison And Cultures Of Secrecy, Mark Findlay Jul 2002

Beware Of The Dog: Assaults In Prison And Cultures Of Secrecy, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In recent months I have been involved in a series of personal injury claims made by prisoners, against the State of NSW, arising out of incidents of inmate violence. The standard scenario occurs on a Sunday where the victim is stabbed with a shiv in a prison yard, barber-shop or gymnasium, out of sight from prison officers. Most victims have suffered a history of violence and intimidation in gaol, and the injuries forming the basis of the claims, are generally shocking. There are many reasons for inmate violence. A disturbing feature of such violence in NSW prisons today is its …

Superman, Wittgenstein And The Disappearance Of Moorean Absurdity, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

'You have known me for years, Lois' explains Superman, as I lay aside my copy of Crimmins’s example (1992). 'But there is something you have not yet discovered. You also know me under a disguise. You have not yet realized that this person is I in disguise. On that way of thinking about me, you have different opinions of me. In fact you think me an idiot.' I've just informed Superman that I accept his testimony on the strength of his intelligence. But I confess I don’t quite know how to acknowledge my acceptance of his final remark.

National Culture And Entrepreneurship: A Review Of Behavioral Research, James C. Hayton, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra Jul 2002

National Culture And Entrepreneurship: A Review Of Behavioral Research, James C. Hayton, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Conceptual arguments for the association between cultural characteristics and entrepreneurship have existed for decades but only in the last 10 years has this relationship been the focus of empirical scrutiny. In this article, we review and synthesize the findings of 21 empirical studies that examine the association between national cultural characteristics and aggregate measures of entrepreneurship, individual characteristics of entrepreneurs, and aspects of corporate entrepreneurship. The study concedes that a predominant number of empirical studies have used Hofstede's conceptualization of national culture and that other domains have been underdeveloped. A preliminary model that integrates past findings is extended. The review …

Structural Change And Lead-Lag Relationship Between The Nikkei Spot Index And Futures Price: A Genetic Programming Approach, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse, X. B. Chang Jun 2002

Structural Change And Lead-Lag Relationship Between The Nikkei Spot Index And Futures Price: A Genetic Programming Approach, Donald Lien, Yiu Kuen Tse, X. B. Chang

Research Collection School of Economics

In this paper we adopt a nonparametric genetic programming approach to identify the structural changes in the Nikkei spot index and futures price. Due to the dominance of the “normal” period in sample size, the lead-lag relationship identified in the spot-futures system based on conventional methods such as test for Granger causality pertains to the normal period and may not be applicable in the “extreme” period. Using genetic programming we identify the lead-lag relationship based on the chronological ordering of the structural changes in the spot and futures markets. Our results show that in recent periods, major market changes originated …

Levy Solutions For Vibration Of Multi-Span Rectangular Plates, Y. Xiang, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei Jun 2002

Levy Solutions For Vibration Of Multi-Span Rectangular Plates, Y. Xiang, Yibao Zhao, G. W. Wei

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper presents the Levy method to investigate the vibration behaviour of multi-span rectangular plates. The Levy method is applicable and analytical for rectangular plates with at least two parallel simply supported edges. The continuity at an interface between two spans is maintained by imposing both the essential and natural boundary conditions along the interface. The impact of the internal line supports on the vibration behaviour of the plates is investigated by varying both the number of internal lines and the line positions. Results for the vibration of two- and three-span rectangular plates are presented, in which the first-known exact …

Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas Jun 2002

Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The foundations of human inequality lie in the fact of human diversity, or in the human tendency to differentiate from some while associating with others to form groups. The diversity which results from association and differentiation makes equality unattainable. Diversity and equality are incompatible, and attempts to promote one can only be made at the expense of the other. In these circumstances, we should abandon the ideal of equality as incapable of offering us an adequate understanding of the nature of the good society.

Growth And Volatility, Hing-Man Leung Jun 2002

Growth And Volatility, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper has two objectives. First, to establish empirically a U-shaped relation between GDP growth rate and income volatility. The backward as well as the fast-growing countries have had extensive volatility; but developed nations by contrast have enjoyed much more stable income. Second, to present a macroeconomic model to study how growth and volatility evolve together. The twin endogenous variables are financial liberalization interacting with liquidity constraints. Opening LDC financial markets could raise or lower their long-term income and growth rates, depending on the severity of existing liquidity constraints. Financial liberalization and removing financial market imperfections unambiguously worsen income volatility.

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang Jun 2002

Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from Cost-Benefit Analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.

How Should We Interpret Evidence Of Time Varying Conditional Skewness?, Gamini Premaratne, Anthony S. Tay Jun 2002

How Should We Interpret Evidence Of Time Varying Conditional Skewness?, Gamini Premaratne, Anthony S. Tay

Research Collection School Of Economics

Several recent articles report evidence of predictability in the skewness of equity returns, raising hopes that predictability in third moments will be useful for forecasting the probability of tail events. The evidence is unfortunately difficult to interpret, partly because they were obtained mainly from parametric models of time-varying conditional skewness, and because little is known about the behavior of such models, for instance, when there are outliers. We investigate a non-parametric approach to testing for predictability in skewness. Specifically, we explore the size and power of a Runs tests, and compare this approach with other tests. A re-examination of daily …

Idmp: An Intradomain Mobility Management Protocol For Next-Generation Wireless Networks, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das Jun 2002

Idmp: An Intradomain Mobility Management Protocol For Next-Generation Wireless Networks, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a lightweight Intra-domain Management Protocol (IDMP) for managing mobility within a domain, commonly known as micro-mobility management, for next generation wireless networks. IDMP is modular and simple because it leverages existing protocols, such as Mobile IP or SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) as global mobility management, for locating roaming nodes. Unlike other proposed intra-domain mobility management schemes, IDMP uses two dynamically autoconfigured care-of addresses (CoAs) for routing the packets destined to mobile nodes. The global care-of address (GCoA) is relatively stable and identifies the mobile node’s attachment to the current domain, while the local care-of address (LCoA) changes …

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier Jun 2002

The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social exchange and evolutionary models of mate selection incorporate economic assumptions but have not considered a key distinction between necessities and luxuries. This distinction can clarify an apparent paradox: Status and attractiveness, though emphasized by many researchers, are not typically rated highly by research participants. Three studies supported the hypothesis that women and men first ensure sufficient levels of necessities in potential mates before considering many other characteristics rated as more important in prior surveys. In Studies 1 and 2, participants designed ideal long-term mates, purchasing various characteristics with 3 different budgets. Study 3 used a mate-screening paradigm and showed …
