Security Modelling For Cyber-Physical Systems: A Systematic Literature Review, Shao Fei Huang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Lwin Khin Shar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyber-physical systems are at the intersection of digital technology and engineering domains, rendering them high-value targets of sophisticated and well-funded cybersecurity threat actors. Prominent cybersecurity attacks on CPS have brought attention to the vulnerability of these systems and the inherent weaknesses of critical infrastructure reliant on them. Security modelling for CPS is an important mechanism to systematically identify and assess vulnerabilities, threats, and risks throughout system life cycles, and to ultimately ensure system resilience, safety, and reliability. This survey delves into state-of-the-art research on CPS security modelling, encompassing both threat and attack modelling. While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, …

Debugging software, i.e., the localization of faults and their repair, is a key activity in software engineering. Therefore, effective and efficient debugging is one of the core skills a software engineer must develop. However, the teaching of debugging techniques is usually very limited or only taught in indirect ways, e.g., during software projects. As a result, most Computer Science (CS) students learn debugging only in an ad-hoc and unstructured way. In this work, we present our approach called Simulated Interactive Debugging that interactively guides students along the debugging process. The guidance aims to empower the students to repair their solutions …

Interactive Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) enhance the learning experience in online education byfostering effective learning through interactive problem-solving. However, many current ITS models do notfully incorporate proactive engagement strategies that optimize educational resources through thoughtfulplanning and assessment. In this work, we propose a novel and practical task of Goal-oriented IntelligentTutoring Systems (GITS), designed to help students achieve proficiency in specific concepts through a tailoredsequence of exercises and evaluations. We introduce a novel graph-based reinforcement learning framework, named Planning-Assessment-Interaction (PAI), to tackle the challenges of goal-oriented policy learningwithin GITS. This framework utilizes cognitive structure information to refine state representation andguide the selection …

A Fake Friend? Ai Companions Are Exactly That, Seow Hon Tan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Tan Seow Hon discussed how AI companions, which promise emotionally intelligent companionship, have blurred the line between human and machine relationships by mimicking empathy, memory, and affection. She suggested that while such technologies may ease loneliness, they risk fostering narcissism, diminishing real human connection, and replacing authentic friendship with comforting illusions that erode the capacity for love and community.

With the growing influence of the internet and information technology, Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) has become a gateway to technological innovations. However, discarded devices, also called e-waste, pose a significant threat to the environment and human health if not properly treated, disposed of, or recycled. In this study, we extend a novel model for the e-waste collection in an urban context: the Heterogeneous VRP with Multiple Time Windows and Stochastic Travel Times (HVRP-MTWSTT). We propose a solution method that employs deep reinforcement learning to guide local search heuristics (DRL-LSH). The contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) HVRP-MTWSTT …

Large language models (LLMs) have transformed sentiment analysis, yet balancing accuracy, efficiency, and explainability remains a critical challenge. This study presents the first comprehensive evaluation of DeepSeek-R1—an open-source reasoning model—against OpenAI’s GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini. We test the full 671B model and its distilled variants, systematically documenting few-shot learning curves. Our experiments show DeepSeek-R1 achieves a 91.39% F1 score on 5-class sentiment and 99.31% accuracy on binary tasks with just 5 shots, an eightfold improvement in few-shot efficiency over GPT-4o. Architecture-specific distillation effects emerge, where a 32B Qwen2.5-based model outperforms the 70B Llama-based variant by 6.69 percentage points. While its reasoning …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The widespread adoption of generative AI in software engineering marks a paradigm shift, offering new opportunities to design and utilize software engineering tools while influencing both developers and the artifacts they create. Traditional empirical methods in software engineering, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches, are well established. However, this paradigm shift introduces novel data types and redefines many concepts in the software engineering process. The roles of developers, users, agents, and researchers increasingly overlap, blurring the distinctions between these social and technical actors within the field. This paper examines how integrating AI into software engineering challenges traditional research paradigms. It …

Pricing Strategies In Global Channels: Considering The Effects Of Parallel Trade, Yuan-Mao Kao, Yang Yang, Shih-Fen Cheng, Cheng-Hung Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pricing a global product differently across multiple regions is a common but controversial practice. Although price differentiation helps capture unique market characteristics, it also encourages parallel trade, which may affect the overall corporate performance of a global company. We study this problem with a single global business unit (GBU) and multiple local business units (LBUs). The GBU manufactures a product and sets a transfer price for supplying the product to all LBUs, and LBUs decide retail prices for their respective regional markets. Customers can purchase products in any region by comparing LBUs’ prices and other parallel-imported factors, and we construct …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traditional deep learning methods and econometric models have played a crucial role in the field of data mining, particularly in the prediction of socioeconomic outcomes. However, socio-economic information is unable to be directly extracted from remote sensing data. So, in this paper, we propose a method to leverage transfer learning to predict socioeconomic indicators (outcomes) through satellite imagery. Specifically, we use road network types as a proxy for socioeconomic factors, which is more effective and stable than using nightlight. We have extracted eleven distinct road topological features to generate reasonable road network types. Given the unique characteristics of road networks, …

Social recommendation, which leverages users’ social information to predict users’ preferences, is a popular branch of recommender systems. Many existing studies have attempted to advance the performance of collaborative filtering methods by leveraging the user-user matrix to enhance user embedding learning with user’s social connections. While the existing social recommender systems have demonstrated good performance in various recommendation tasks, the extent of social information usefulness in recommender systems remains unclear. This paper addresses the research gap by designing experiments to answer three research questions: (i) How useful is social information in varying user-item data sparsity? (ii) How much social information …

Intentionframe: A Semi-Structured, Multi-Aspect Framework For Fine-Grained Conversational Intention Understanding, Zailong Tian, Zhuoheng Han, Lizi Liao, Lizi Liao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Understanding user intentions in multi-turn dialogues is critical for conversational AI, yet existing approaches—relying on rigid slot-value structures or unstructured free-text—fail to fully capture conversational complexity. In this paper, we propose IntentionFrame, a semi-structured framework inspired by psychological and cognitive intention theories, which organizes conversational intents into four interrelated aspects: situation, emotion, action, and knowledge. This design not only retains interpretability but also provides LLMs with a rich context to accurately parse and respond to nuanced user inputs. To efficiently scale IntentionFrame annotations, we introduce a Weakly-supervised Reinforced Generation (WeRG) method that leverages a small set of high-quality human annotations …

Unified Molecule Pre-Training With Flexible 2d And 3d Modalities: Single And Paired Modality Integration, Tengwei Song, Min Wu, Yuan Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Molecular representation learning plays a crucial role in advancing applications such as drug discovery and material design. Existing work leverages 2D and 3D modalities of molecular information for pre-training, aiming to capture comprehensive structural and geometric insights. However, these methods require paired 2D and 3D molecular data to train the model effectively and prevent it from collapsing into a single modality, posing limitations in scenarios where a certain modality is unavailable or computationally expensive to generate. To overcome this limitation, we propose FlexMol, a flexible molecule pre-training framework that learns unified molecular representations while supporting single-modality input. Specifically, inspired by …

Few-shot Anomaly Detection (AD) for images aims to detect anomalies with few-shot normal samples from the target dataset. It is a crucial task when only few samples can be obtained, and it is challenging since it needs to be generalized to different domains. Existing methods try to enhance the generalizability of AD by incorporating large vision-language models (LVLMs).However, how to transform category semantic information in LVLMs into anomaly information to improve the generalizability of AD remains a challenge facing existing methods. To address the challenge, we propose a few-shot AD method called MetaCAN, a novel category-to-anomaly network trained with AD meta-learning …

Parameter-Efficient Variational Autoencoder For Multimodal Multi-Interest Recommendation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning user preferences in recommendation systems is enriched by multimodal features, such as textual and visual content, and amplified by multi-interest modeling with Variational AutoEncoders (VAEs). However, prior efforts are limited by single modality focus and cumbersome, parameter-heavy architecture designs. To address these limitations, we introduce an innovative solution that blends the semantic richness of multimodal data with the representational power of multi-representation VAEs. Drawing inspiration from Mixture of Experts (MoE), we cast each VAE as an expert tailored to a specific modality, then fuse them via a novel parameter-merging function into a lean, unified model. This approach efficiently captures …

Memad: Structured Memory Of Debates For Enhanced Multi-Agent Reasoning, Shuai Ling, Lizi Liao, Dongmei Jiang, Weili Guan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable in-context learning capabilities but often struggle with complex, multi-step reasoning. Multi-Agent Debate (MAD) frameworks partially address these limitations by enabling iterative agent interactions. However, they neglect valuable historical insights by treating each new debate independently. In this paper, we propose Memory-Augmented MAD (MeMAD), a parameter-free memory-augmented MAD framework that systematically organizes and reuses past debate transcripts. MeMAD stores structured representations of successful and unsuccessful reasoning attempts enriched with self-reflections and peer feedback. It systematically retrieves them via semantic similarity at inference time to inform new reasoning tasks. Our experiments on challenging mathematical reasoning, scientific …

What Students Really Think: Unpacking Ai Ethics In Educational Assessments Through A Triadic Framework, Lim Ming Soon Tristan, Gottipati Swapna, Michelle L. F. Cheong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rise of AI in educational assessments has significantly enhanced efficiency and accuracy. However, it also introduces critical ethical challenges, including bias in grading, data privacy risks, and accountability gaps. These issues can undermine trust in AI-driven assessments and compromise educational fairness, making a structured ethical framework essential. To address these challenges, this study empirically validates an existing triadic ethical framework for AI-assisted educational assessments, originally proposed by Lim, Gottipati and Cheong (In: Keengwe (ed) Creative AI tools and ethical implications in teaching and learning, IGI Global, 2023), grounded in student perceptions. The framework encompasses three ethical domains—physical, cognitive, and …

Seeing 3d Through 2d Lenses: 3d Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning Via Cross-Modal Geometric Rectification, Tuo Xiang, Xuemiao Xu, Bangzhen Liu, Jinyi Li, Yong Li, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid growth of 3D digital content necessitates expandable recognition systems for open-world scenarios. However, existing 3D class-incremental learning methods struggle under extreme data scarcity due to geometric misalignment and texture bias. While recent approaches integrate 3D data with 2D foundation models (e.g., CLIP), they suffer from semantic blurring caused by texture-biased projections and indiscriminate fusion of geometric-textural cues, leading to unstable decision prototypes and catastrophic forgetting. To address these issues, we propose Cross-Modal Geometric Rectification (CMGR), a framework that enhances 3D geometric fidelity by leveraging CLIP’s hierarchical spatial semantics. Specifically, we introduce a Structure-Aware Geometric Rectification module that hierarchically …

The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly those tailored for programming tasks—referred to as code LLMs—has created novel opportunities to enhance developer productivity. These advanced models automate routine and repetitive coding tasks, such as code generation and debugging, and enable faster prototyping and more efficient problem-solving. Despite these remarkable advantages, the current generation of code LLMs exhibits notable limitations that impact their practical effectiveness in real-world software engineering scenarios. These models frequently produce code that is inefficient or suboptimal in runtime performance, demonstrate opaque reasoning processes, and struggle to adapt effectively to diverse developer contexts and specific requirements. Moreover, …

In recent years, applying deep models to automatically learn construction heuristics for vehicle routing problems has achieved remarkable advancements. However, they are less effective in searching solutions due to two primary limitations: relying on deterministic probability distributions and overlooking the strategic advantage of prioritizing nearby unvisited nodes during the route construction process, resulting in suboptimal policies In this paper, we propose a novel lightweight population-based policy optimization (LPPO) framework that learns a diverse population of solution strategies through the utilization of innovative perturbation factors, in order to facilitate search exploration. Moreover, we design a localized attention synthesis (LAS) network to …

Recently, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have achieved significant success across multiple disciplines due to their exceptional instruction-following capabilities and extensive world knowledge. However, whether these MLLMs possess human-like compositional reasoning abilities remains an open problem. To unveil their reasoning behaviors, we first curate a Multimodal Assumptive Reasoning Benchmark (MARS-Bench) in this paper. Interestingly, we find that most prevalent MLLMs can be easily fooled by the introduction of a presupposition into the question, whereas such presuppositions appear naive to human reasoning. Besides, we also propose a simple yet effective method, Active Deduction (AD), a novel reinforcement learning paradigm to encourage …

Preconditioned stochastic optimization algorithms, exemplified by Shampoo, outperform first-order optimizers by offering theoretical convergence benefits and practical gains in large-scale neural network training. However, they incur substantial memory overhead due to the storage demands of non-diagonal preconditioning matrices. To address this, we introduce 4-bit quantization for Shampoo’s preconditioners. We introduce two key methods: First, we apply Cholesky decomposition followed by quantization of the Cholesky factors, reducing memory usage by leveraging their lower triangular structure while better preserving spectral properties to minimize information loss. To our knowledge, this is the first quantization approach applied to Cholesky factors of preconditioners. Second, we …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generalized Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation (GFSS) aims to extend a segmentation model to novel classes with only a few annotated examples while maintaining performance on base classes. Recently, pretrained vision-language models (VLMs) such as CLIP have been leveraged in GFSS to improve generalization on novel classes through multi-modal prototypes learning. However, existing prototype-based methods are inherently deterministic, limiting the adaptability of learned prototypes to diverse samples, particularly for novel classes with scarce annotations. To address this, we propose FewCLIP, a probabilistic prototype calibration framework over multi-modal prototypes from the pretrained CLIP, thus providing more adaptive prototype learning for GFSS. Specifically, FewCLIP …

Efficient Visual Instruction Fine-Tuning (EVIT) seeks to adapt Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to downstream tasks with minimal computational overhead. However, as task diversity and complexity increase, EVIT faces significant challenges in resolving data conflicts. To address this limitation, we propose the Dual Low-Rank Adaptation (Dual-LoRA), a holistic-to-local framework that enhances the adapter’s capacity to address data conflict through dual structural optimization. Specifically, we utilize two subspaces: a skill space for stable, holistic knowledge retention, and a rank-rectified task space that locally activates the holistic knowledge. Additionally, we introduce Visual Cue Enhancement (VCE), a multi-level local feature aggregation module designed …

Exploring Object Status Recognition For Recipe Progress Tracking In Non-Visual Cooking, Franklin Mingzhe Li, Kaitlyn Ng, Bin Zhu, Patrick Carrington
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cooking plays a vital role in everyday independence and well-being, yet remains challenging for people with vision impairments due to limited support for tracking progress and receiving contextual feedback. Object status — the condition or transformation of ingredients and tools — offers a promising but underexplored foundation for context-aware cooking support. In this paper, we present OSCAR (Object Status Context Awareness for Recipes), a technical pipeline that explores the use of object status recognition to enable recipe progress tracking in non-visual cooking. OSCAR integrates recipe parsing, object status extraction, visual alignment with cooking steps, and time-causal modeling to support real-time …

3Dvisual grounding aims to identify and localize objects in a 3Dspacebasedontextualdescriptions. However, existing methods struggle with disentangling targets from anchors in complex multi-anchor queries and resolving inconsisten cies in spatial descriptions caused by perspective variations. To tackle these challenges, we propose ViewSRD, a frame work that formulates 3D visual grounding as a structured multi-view decomposition process. First, the Simple Rela tion Decoupling (SRD) module restructures complex multi anchor queries into a set of targeted single-anchor state ments, generating a structured set of perspective-aware de scriptions that clarify positional relationships. These de composed representations serve as the foundation for the Multi-view …

Multimodal models leverage complementary information across modalities to enrich feature representations. While visual information shows potential in representing structure for some combinatorial optimization problems (COPs), its application to complex scheduling like the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) remains underexplored. Current learning-based FJSP solvers predominantly rely on handcrafted state features. This dependence can lead to inconsistencies and may not fully capture the problem's intricate dynamics. Crucially, these methods overlook visual modalities. Visual representations offer a distinct advantage by inherently capturing the global topological structure and complex resource interactions within the FJSP state. Unlike localized handcrafted features, this holistic, structural view …

Existing approaches for image-to-recipe retrieval have the implicit assumption that a food image can fully capture the details textually documented in its recipe. However, a food image only reflects the visual outcome of a cooked dish and not the underlying cooking process. Consequently, learning cross-modal representations to bridge the modality gap between images and recipes tends to ignore subtle, recipe-specific details that are not visually apparent but are crucial for recipe retrieval. Specifically, the representations are biased to capture the dominant visual elements, resulting in difficulty in ranking similar recipes with subtle differences in use of ingredients and cooking methods. …
