Strategic Planning For Flexible Agent Availability In Large Taxi Fleets, Rajiv Ranjan Kumar, Pradeep Varakantham, Shih-Fen Cheng Jun 2023

Strategic Planning For Flexible Agent Availability In Large Taxi Fleets, Rajiv Ranjan Kumar, Pradeep Varakantham, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In large scale multi-agent systems like taxi fleets, individual agents (taxi drivers) are self interested (maximizing their own profits) and this can introduce inefficiencies in the system. One such inefficiency is with regards to the "required" availability of taxis at different time periods during the day. Since a taxi driver can work for limited number of hours in a day (e.g., 8-10 hours in a city like Singapore), there is a need to optimize the specific hours, so as to maximize individual as well as social welfare. Technically, this corresponds to solving a large scale multi-stage selfish routing game with …

Preference-Aware Delivery Planning For Last-Mile Logistics, Qian Shao, Shih-Fen Cheng Jun 2023

Preference-Aware Delivery Planning For Last-Mile Logistics, Qian Shao, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Optimizing delivery routes for last-mile logistics service is challenging and has attracted the attention of many researchers. These problems are usually modeled and solved as variants of vehicle routing problems (VRPs) with challenging real-world constraints (e.g., time windows, precedence). However, despite many decades of solid research on solving these VRP instances, we still see significant gaps between optimized routes and the routes that are actually preferred by the practitioners. Most of these gaps are due to the difference between what's being optimized, and what the practitioners actually care about, which is hard to be defined exactly in many instances. In …

Towards Explaining Sequences Of Actions In Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Models, Phyo Wai Khaing, Minghong Geng, Budhitama Subagdja, Shubham Pateria, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) has shown promising results in solving complex real-world problems, the applicability and reliability of MADRL models are often limited by a lack of understanding of their inner workings for explaining the decisions made. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel method for explaining MADRL by generalizing the sequences of action events performed by agents into high-level abstract strategies using a spatio-temporal neural network model. Specifically, an interval-based memory retrieval procedure is developed to generalize the encoded sequences of action events over time into short sequential patterns. In addition, two abstraction algorithms are …

A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Reduction Of Disjoint Bilinear Programs Via Symbolic Variable Elimination, Jihwan Jeong, Scott Sanner, Akshat Kumar Jun 2023

A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Reduction Of Disjoint Bilinear Programs Via Symbolic Variable Elimination, Jihwan Jeong, Scott Sanner, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A disjointly constrained bilinear program (DBLP) has various practical and industrial applications, e.g., in game theory, facility location, supply chain management, and multi-agent planning problems. Although earlier work has noted the equivalence of DBLP and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) from an abstract theoretical perspective, a practical and exact closed-form reduction of a DBLP to a MILP has remained elusive. Such explicit reduction would allow us to leverage modern MILP solvers and techniques along with their solution optimality and anytime approximation guarantees. To this end, we provide the first constructive closed-form MILP reduction of a DBLP by extending the technique of …

How To Resuscitate A Sick Vm In The Cloud, Xuhua Ding Jun 2023

How To Resuscitate A Sick Vm In The Cloud, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A guest virtual machine in a cloud platform may fall “sick” when its kernel encounters a fatal low-level bug or is subverted by an adversary. The VM owner is hence likely to lose her control over it due to a kernel hang or being denied of remote accesses. While the VM can be rebooted with the assistance from the cloud server, the owner not only faces service disruption but also is left with no opportunity to make an in-depth diagnosis and forensics on the spot, not to mention a live rectification. Currently, the cloud service provider has neither incentive nor …

Semantic Scene Completion With Cleaner Self, Fengyun Wang, Dong Zhang, Hanwang Zhang, Jinhui Tang, Qianru Sun Jun 2023

Semantic Scene Completion With Cleaner Self, Fengyun Wang, Dong Zhang, Hanwang Zhang, Jinhui Tang, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic Scene Completion (SSC) transforms an image of single-view depth and/or RGB 2D pixels into 3D voxels, each of whose semantic labels are predicted. SSC is a well-known ill-posed problem as the prediction model has to “imagine” what is behind the visible surface, which is usually represented by Truncated Signed Distance Function (TSDF). Due to the sensory imperfection of the depth camera, most existing methods based on the noisy TSDF estimated from depth values suffer from 1) incomplete volumetric predictions and 2) confused semantic labels. To this end, we use the ground-truth 3D voxels to generate a perfect visible surface, …

Unbiased Multiple Instance Learning For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection, Hui Lyu, Zhongqi Yue, Qianru Sun, Bin Luo, Zhen Cui, Hanwang Zhang Jun 2023

Unbiased Multiple Instance Learning For Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection, Hui Lyu, Zhongqi Yue, Qianru Sun, Bin Luo, Zhen Cui, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection (WSVAD) is challenging because the binary anomaly label is only given on the video level, but the output requires snippet-level predictions. So, Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) is prevailing in WSVAD. However, MIL is notoriously known to suffer from many false alarms because the snippet-level detector is easily biased towards the abnormal snippets with simple context, confused by the normality with the same bias, and missing the anomaly with a different pattern. To this end, we propose a new MIL framework: Unbiased MIL (UMIL), to learn unbiased anomaly features that improve WSVAD. At each MIL training …

Livoauth: Liveness Detection In Voiceprint Authentication With Random Challenges And Detection Modes, Rui Zhang, Zheng Yan, Xueru Wang, Robert H. Deng Jun 2023

Livoauth: Liveness Detection In Voiceprint Authentication With Random Challenges And Detection Modes, Rui Zhang, Zheng Yan, Xueru Wang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Voiceprint authentication provides great convenience to users in many application scenarios. However, it easily suffers from spoofing attacks including speech synthesis, speech conversion, and speech replay. Liveness detection is an effective way to resist these attacks. But existing methods suffer from many disadvantages, such as extra deployment costs due to precise data collection, environmental disturbance, high computational overhead, and operational complexity. A uniform platform that can offer voiceprint authentication as a service (VAaS) over the cloud is also lacked. Hence, it is imperative to design an economic and effective method for liveness detection in voiceprint authentication. In this article, we …

Evading Deepfake Detectors Via Adversarial Statistical Consistency, Yang Hou, Qing Guo, Yihao Huang, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Jianjun Zhao Jun 2023

Evading Deepfake Detectors Via Adversarial Statistical Consistency, Yang Hou, Qing Guo, Yihao Huang, Xiaofei Xie, Lei Ma, Jianjun Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, as various realistic face forgery techniques known as DeepFake improves by leaps and bounds, more and more DeepFake detection techniques have been proposed. These methods typically rely on detecting statistical differences between natural (i.e., real) and DeepFake-generated images in both spatial and frequency domains. In this work, we propose to explicitly minimize the statistical differences to evade state-of-the-art DeepFake detectors. To this end, we propose a statistical consistency attack (StatAttack) against DeepFake detectors, which contains two main parts. First, we select several statistical-sensitive natural degradations (i.e., exposure, blur, and noise) and add them to the fake images …

Dynamic Police Patrol Scheduling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Songhan Wong, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau Jun 2023

Dynamic Police Patrol Scheduling With Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Songhan Wong, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective police patrol scheduling is essential in projecting police presence and ensuring readiness in responding to unexpected events in urban environments. However, scheduling patrols can be a challenging task as it requires balancing between two conflicting objectives namely projecting presence (proactive patrol) and incident response (reactive patrol). This task is made even more challenging with the fact that patrol schedules do not remain static as occurrences of dynamic incidents can disrupt the existing schedules. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) to address the Dynamic Bi-objective Police Patrol Dispatching and Rescheduling Problem …

Groundnlq @ Ego4d Natural Language Queries Challenge 2023, Zhijian Hou, Lei Ji, Difei Gao, Wanjun Zhong, Kun Yan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wing-Kwong Chan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Nan Duan, Mike Zheng Shou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this report, we present our champion solution for Ego4D Natural Language Queries (NLQ) Challenge in CVPR 2023. Essentially, to accurately ground in a video, an effective egocentric feature extractor and a powerful grounding model are required. Motivated by this, we leverage a two-stage pre-training strategy to train egocentric feature extractors and the grounding model on video narrations, and further fine-tune the model on annotated data. In addition, we introduce a novel grounding model GroundNLQ, which employs a multi-modal multiscale grounding module for effective video and text fusion and various temporal intervals, especially for long videos. On the blind test …

Enhancing Third-Party Software Reliability Through Bug Bounty Programs, Tianlu Zhou, Dan Ma, Nan Feng Jun 2023

Enhancing Third-Party Software Reliability Through Bug Bounty Programs, Tianlu Zhou, Dan Ma, Nan Feng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug Bounty Programs (BBPs) reward external hackers for identifying and reporting software vulnerabilities. As the number of security issues caused by third-party applications has been significantly increased recently, many digital platforms are considering launching BBPs to help enhance the reliability of third-party software. BBPs bring benefits to the platform and vendors, meanwhile impose additional costs on them as well. As a result, the overall impact of using BBP is unclear. In this paper, we present an analytical model to examine the strategic decisions of launching and participating in a BBP for the platform and the third-party vendor, respectively. We find …

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Spatial Range Query Over Outsourced Encrypted Data, Yinbin Miao, Yutao Yang, Xinghua Li, Zhiquan Liu, Hongwei Li, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng Jun 2023

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Spatial Range Query Over Outsourced Encrypted Data, Yinbin Miao, Yutao Yang, Xinghua Li, Zhiquan Liu, Hongwei Li, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development of Location-Based Services (LBS), a large number of LBS providers outsource spatial data to cloud servers to reduce their high computational and storage burdens, but meanwhile incur some security issues such as location privacy leakage. Thus, extensive privacy-preserving LBS schemes have been proposed. However, the existing solutions using Bloom filter do not take into account the redundant bits that do not map information in Bloom filter, resulting in high computational overheads, and reveal the inclusion relationship in Bloom filter. To solve these issues, we propose an efficient Privacy-preserving Spatial Range Query (PSRQ) scheme by skillfully combining …

Ifundit: Visual Profiling Of Fund Investment Styles, Rong Zhang, Bon Kyung Ku, Yong Wang, Xuanwu Yue, Siyuan Liu, Ke Li, Huamin Qu Jun 2023

Ifundit: Visual Profiling Of Fund Investment Styles, Rong Zhang, Bon Kyung Ku, Yong Wang, Xuanwu Yue, Siyuan Liu, Ke Li, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mutual funds are becoming increasingly popular with the emergence of Internet finance. Clear profiling of a fund's investment style is crucial for fund managers to evaluate their investment strategies, and for investors to understand their investment. However, it is challenging to profile a fund's investment style as it requires a comprehensive analysis of complex multi-dimensional temporal data. In addition, different fund managers and investors have different focuses when analysing a fund's investment style. To address the issue, we propose iFUNDit, an interactive visual analytic system for fund investment style analysis. The system decomposes a fund's critical features into performance attributes …

Distpreserv: Maintaining User Distribution For Privacy-Preserving Location-Based Services, Yanbing Ren, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Jian Weng, Siqi Ma, Jianfeng Ma Jun 2023

Distpreserv: Maintaining User Distribution For Privacy-Preserving Location-Based Services, Yanbing Ren, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Jian Weng, Siqi Ma, Jianfeng Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-Based Services (LBSs) are one of the most frequently used mobile applications in the modern society. Geo-Indistinguishability (Geo-Ind) is a promising privacy protection model for LBSs since it can provide formal security guarantees for location privacy. However, Geo-Ind undermines the statistical location distribution of users on the LBS server because of perturbed locations, thereby disabling the server to provide distribution-based services (e.g., traffic congestion maps). To overcome this issue, we give a privacy definition, called DistPreserv, to enable the LBS server to acquire valid location distributions while providing users with strict location protection. Then we propose a privacy-preserving LBS scheme …

Gnnlens: A Visual Analytics Approach For Prediction Error Diagnosis Of Graph Neural Networks., Zhihua Jin, Yong Wang, Qianwen Wang, Yao Ming, Tengfei Ma, Huamin Qu Jun 2023

Gnnlens: A Visual Analytics Approach For Prediction Error Diagnosis Of Graph Neural Networks., Zhihua Jin, Yong Wang, Qianwen Wang, Yao Ming, Tengfei Ma, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) aim to extend deep learning techniques to graph data and have achieved significant progress in graph analysis tasks (e.g., node classification) in recent years. However, similar to other deep neural networks like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), GNNs behave like a black box with their details hidden from model developers and users. It is therefore difficult to diagnose possible errors of GNNs. Despite many visual analytics studies being done on CNNs and RNNs, little research has addressed the challenges for GNNs. This paper fills the research gap with an interactive visual analysis …

Ocapo: Occupancy-Aware, Pdc Control For Open-Plan, Shared Workspaces, Anaradha Ravi, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Passive Displacement Cooling (PDC) has gained popularity as a means of significantly reducing building energy consumption overheads, especially in tropical climates. PDC eliminates the use of mechanical fans, instead using chilled-water heat exchangers to perform convective cooling. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of different parameters affecting occupant comfort in a 1000m2 open-floor area (consisting of multiple zones) of a ZEB (Zero Energy Building) deployed with PDC units and tackle the problem of setting the temperature setpoint of the PDC units to assure occupant thermal comfort. We tackle two key practical challenges: (a) the zone-level (i.e., occupant-experienced) temperature differs …

Competing Auctions With Non-Identical Objects, Massimiliano Landi, Domenico Menicucci, Andrey Sarychev May 2023

Competing Auctions With Non-Identical Objects, Massimiliano Landi, Domenico Menicucci, Andrey Sarychev

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study a competition model with two sellers that auction non-identical objects, unlike most of the literature on competing auctions. Each bidder has bidimensional private information, his values for the objects, and chooses the auction in which he participates (if any) after each seller has set a reserve price for her auction. We show that in some cases the duopoly reserve price is greater than the reserve price for a monopolist auctioning a single object; thus, an increase in the number of sellers may make some bidder’s types worse off. In our analysis we first characterize the unique symmetric equilibrium …

Reinforced Adaptation Network For Partial Domain Adaptation, Keyu Wu, Min Wu, Zhenghua Chen, Ruibing Jin, Wei Cui, Zhiguang Cao, Xiaoli Li May 2023

Reinforced Adaptation Network For Partial Domain Adaptation, Keyu Wu, Min Wu, Zhenghua Chen, Ruibing Jin, Wei Cui, Zhiguang Cao, Xiaoli Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Domain adaptation enables generalized learning in new environments by transferring knowledge from label-rich source domains to label-scarce target domains. As a more realistic extension, partial domain adaptation (PDA) relaxes the assumption of fully shared label space, and instead deals with the scenario where the target label space is a subset of the source label space. In this paper, we propose a Reinforced Adaptation Network (RAN) to address the challenging PDA problem. Specifically, a deep reinforcement learning model is proposed to learn source data selection policies. Meanwhile, a domain adaptation model is presented to simultaneously determine rewards and learn domain-invariant feature …

Msrl-Net: A Multi-Level Semantic Relation-Enhanced Learning Network For Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Zhenda Hu, Zhaoxia Wang, Yinglin Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan May 2023

Msrl-Net: A Multi-Level Semantic Relation-Enhanced Learning Network For Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Zhenda Hu, Zhaoxia Wang, Yinglin Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims to analyze the sentiment polarity of a given text towards several specific aspects. For implementing the ABSA, one way is to convert the original problem into a sentence semantic matching task, using pre-trained language models, such as BERT. However, for such a task, the intra- and inter-semantic relations among input sentence pairs are often not considered. Specifically, the semantic information and guidance of relations revealed in the labels, such as positive, negative and neutral, have not been completely exploited. To address this issue, we introduce a self-supervised sentence pair relation classification task and propose a …

Automating Arduino Programming: From Hardware Setups To Sample Source Code Generation, Imam Nur Bani Yusuf, Diyanah Binte Abdul Jamal, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An embedded system is a system consisting of software code, controller hardware, and I/O (Input/Output) hardware that performs a specific task. Developing an embedded system presents several challenges. First, the development often involves configuring hardware that requires domain-specific knowledge. Second, the library for the hardware may have API usage patterns that must be followed. To overcome such challenges, we propose a framework called ArduinoProg towards the automatic generation of Arduino applications. ArduinoProg takes a natural language query as input and outputs the configuration and API usage pattern for the hardware described in the query. Motivated by our findings on the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Machine learning (ML) has gained much attention and has been incorporated into our daily lives. While there are numerous publicly available ML projects on open source platforms such as GitHub, there have been limited attempts in filtering those projects to curate ML projects of high quality. The limited availability of such a high-quality dataset poses an obstacle to understanding ML projects. To help clear this obstacle, we present NICHE, a manually labelled dataset consisting of 572 ML projects. Based on the evidence of good software engineering practices, we label 441 of these projects as engineered and 131 as non-engineered. This …

What's Behind Tight Deadlines? Business Causes Of Technical Debt, Rodrigo Rebouças De Almeida, Christoph Treude, Uirá Kulesza May 2023

What's Behind Tight Deadlines? Business Causes Of Technical Debt, Rodrigo Rebouças De Almeida, Christoph Treude, Uirá Kulesza

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

What are the business causes behind tight deadlines? What drives the prioritization of features that pushes quality matters to the back burner? We conducted a survey with 71 experienced practitioners and did a thematic analysis of the openended answers to the question: “Could you give examples of how business may contribute to technical debt?” Business-related causes were organized into two categories: pure-business and business/IT gap, and they were related to ‘tight deadlines’ and ‘features over quality’, the most frequently cited management reasons for technical debt. We contribute a cause-effect model which relates the various business causes of tight deadlines and …

DevOps is a set of practices that deals with coordination between development and operation teams and ensures rapid and reliable new software releases that are essential in industry. DevOps education assumes the vital task of preparing new professionals in these practices using appropriate teaching methods. However, there are insufficient studies investigating teaching methods in DevOps. We performed an analysis based on interviews to identify teaching methods and their relationship with DevOps educational challenges. Our findings show that project-based learning and collaborative learning are emerging as the most relevant teaching methods.

Win: Weight-Decay-Integrated Nesterov Acceleration For Adaptive Gradient Algorithms, Pan Zhou, Xingyu Xie, Shuicheng Yan May 2023

Win: Weight-Decay-Integrated Nesterov Acceleration For Adaptive Gradient Algorithms, Pan Zhou, Xingyu Xie, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Training deep networks on large-scale datasets is computationally challenging. In this work, we explore the problem of “how to accelerate adaptive gradient algorithms in a general manner”, and aim to provide practical efficiency-boosting insights. To this end, we propose an effective and general Weight-decay-Integrated Nesterov acceleration (Win) to accelerate adaptive algorithms. Taking AdamW and Adam as examples, we minimize a dynamical loss per iteration which combines the vanilla training loss and a dynamic regularizer inspired by proximal point method (PPM) to improve the convexity of the problem. To introduce Nesterov-alike-acceleration into AdamW and Adam, we respectively use the first- and …

Do Firms Respond To Peer Disclosures? Evidence From Disclosures Of Clinical Trial Results, Vedran Capkun, Yun Lou, Clemens A. Otto, Yin Wang May 2023

Do Firms Respond To Peer Disclosures? Evidence From Disclosures Of Clinical Trial Results, Vedran Capkun, Yun Lou, Clemens A. Otto, Yin Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using data on the registration of clinical trials and the disclosure of trial results, we examine how firms respond to peer disclosures. We find that firms are less likely to disclose their own trial results if the results of a larger number of closely related trials are disclosed by their peers. This relation is stronger if the firms face higher competition (as measured by the number of competing trials). It is weaker if the firms are further along in their research than the peers (as measured by the trials’ phase) and if the peers’ disclosures convey more negative news (as …

Wearing Masks Implies Refuting Trump?: Towards Target-Specific User Stance Prediction Across Events In Covid-19 And Us Election 2020, Hong Zhang, Haewoon Kwak, Wei Gao, Jisun An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

People who share similar opinions towards controversial topics could form an echo chamber and may share similar political views toward other topics as well. The existence of such connections, which we call connected behavior, gives researchers a unique opportunity to predict how one would behave for a future event given their past behaviors. In this work, we propose a framework to conduct connected behavior analysis. Neural stance detection models are trained on Twitter data collected on three seemingly independent topics, i.e., wearing a mask, racial equality, and Trump, to detect people’s stance, which we consider as their online behavior in …

Techsumbot: A Stack Overflow Answer Summarization Tool For Technical Query, Chengran Yang, Bowen Xu, Jiakun Liu, David Lo May 2023

Techsumbot: A Stack Overflow Answer Summarization Tool For Technical Query, Chengran Yang, Bowen Xu, Jiakun Liu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow is a popular platform for developers to seek solutions to programming-related problems. However, prior studies identified that developers may suffer from the redundant, useless, and incomplete information retrieved by the Stack Overflow search engine. To help developers better utilize the Stack Overflow knowledge, researchers proposed tools to summarize answers to a Stack Overflow question. However, existing tools use hand-craft features to assess the usefulness of each answer sentence and fail to remove semantically redundant information in the result. Besides, existing tools only focus on a certain programming language and cannot retrieve up-to-date new posted knowledge from Stack Overflow. …
