Bridging Bug Localization And Issue Fixing: A Hierarchical Localization Framework Leveraging Large Language Models, Jianming Chang, Xin Zhou, Lulu Wang, David Lo, Bixin Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated issue fixing is a critical task in software debugging and has recently garnered significant attention from academia and industry. However, existing fixing techniques predominantly focus on the repair phase, often overlooking the importance of improving the preceding bug localization phase. As a foundational step in issue fixing, bug localization plays a pivotal role in determining the overall effectiveness of the entire process. To enhance the precision of issue fixing by accurately identifying bug locations in large-scale projects, this paper presents BugCerberus, the first hierarchical bug localization framework powered by three customized large language models. First, BugCerberus analyzes intermediate representations …

Smart contract vulnerabilities have led to billions of dollars in economic losses. Among these, improper Access Control, which allows unauthorized users to execute restricted functions, is particularly prevalent and has caused significant financial damage. Smart contract repositories contain source code, documentation, configuration files, and other artifacts necessary for building and deploying smart contracts. GitHub hosts numerous open-source repositories of this kind, which serve as intermediate artifacts in development and require compilation and packaging to produce deployable contracts. Third-party developers often reference, reuse, or fork code from these repositories during custom development. However, if the referenced code contains vulnerabilities, it can …

Conventionally, human intuition defines vision as a modality of passive optical sensing, relying on ambient light to perceive the environment. However, active optical sensing, which involves emitting and receiving signals, offers unique advantages by capturing both radiometric and geometric properties of the environment, independent of external illumination conditions. This work focuses on advancing active optical sensing using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), which captures intensity data, enabling the estimation of surface reflectance that remains invariant under varying illumination. Such properties are crucial for robotic perception tasks, including detection, recognition, segmentation, and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). A key challenge with …

Learning Feature Inversion For Multi-Class Anomaly Detection Under General-Purpose Coco-Ad Benchmark, Jiangning Zhang, Chengjie Wang, Xiangtai Li, Guanzhong Tian, Zhucun Xue, Yong Liu, Guansong Pang, Dacheng Tao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anomaly detection (AD) is often focused on detecting anomaly areas for industrial quality inspection and medical lesion examination. However, due to the specific scenario targets, the data scale for AD is relatively small, and evaluation metrics are still deficient compared to classic vision tasks, such as object detection and semantic segmentation. To fill these gaps, this work first constructs a large-scale and general-purpose COCO-AD dataset by extending COCO to the AD field. This enables fair evaluation and sustainable development for different methods on this challenging benchmark. Moreover, current metrics such as AU-ROC have nearly reached saturation on simple datasets, which …

Semat: Semantic Enhanced Natural Image Interactive Matting, Ruihao Xia, Yu Liang, Peng-Tao Jiang, Hao Zhang, Qianru Sun, Yang Tang, Bo Li, Pan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent approaches attempt to adapt powerful interactive segmentation models, such as SAM, to interactive matting and fine-tune the models based on synthetic matting datasets. However, models trained on synthetic data fail to generalize to complex and occlusion scenes. We address this challenge by proposing a new matting dataset based on the COCO dataset, namely COCO-Matting. It selects real-world complex images from COCO and converts semantic segmentation masks to matting labels. The built COCO-Matting comprises an extensive collection of 36,980 human instance-level alpha mattes in complex natural scenarios. Furthermore, existing SAM-based matting methods extract intermediate features and masks from a frozen …

Visual Loop: Bridging The Cognitive Gap In Software Development Through Visual-Ai Collaboration, Luis Filipe Fernandes Gomes, Xin Zhou, David Lo, Rui Abreu Apr 2026

Visual Loop: Bridging The Cognitive Gap In Software Development Through Visual-Ai Collaboration, Luis Filipe Fernandes Gomes, Xin Zhou, David Lo, Rui Abreu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software development remains predominantly text-centric, despite decades of evidence showing that developers think and communicate visually. While sketches and diagrams externalize developers’ mental models, they remain disconnected from source code and quickly become outdated. Recent advances in foundation models, capable of both code and visual reasoning, create an opportunity to unify these representations. In this vision paper, we introduce Visual Loop, a continuous visual development environment that keeps code and informal sketches in bidirectional synchronization. Our prototype connects a code editor with a tablet-based visualization workspace, allowing developers to explore, annotate, and modify systems through freehand sketches interpreted by multimodal …

Using an international sample of firms and two country-level measures of financial literacy, we find robust evidence of a positive relation between financial literacy and firms' Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosures. In cross-sectional analyses, we find that the effect of financial literacy in enhancing ESG disclosures is more prominent in poorer information environments, weaker legal institutions and weaker ESG reporting environments. Lastly, we find that financial literacy also enhances ESG performance. Our study contributes to and extends the literature by providing strong evidence that citizens' financial literacy enhances firms' ESG disclosure and the associated ESG performance.

Crucial urbanists’ placement of smart city initiatives in Western Europe or North America mostly on the “low” rungs of participatory ladders or scaffolds does not mean that smart urban development necessarily connotes democracy-eroding neoliberalization everywhere. This article offers a more globally variegated and dynamic understanding of the relationship between citizens and smart cities. We apply an institutional logics framework to the citizen-smart city nexus in seven cities spanning three world regions, considering the interplay of citizen-centric logics with techno-innovation-oriented and bureaucratic/managerial logics. Appreciating contextually specific institutional orders helps to explain why similar initiatives and intentions yield different outcomes across time …

A Market Of Care Skills: Profiting From Professional Education And Practice, Yasmin Y. Ortiga Apr 2026

A Market Of Care Skills: Profiting From Professional Education And Practice, Yasmin Y. Ortiga

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Who profits from the commodification of care and how does such accumulation occur? Focusing on the case of the nursing care market, this paper shows how professional schools and local hospitals within source nations like the Philippines profit from nurses seeking the credentials to qualify for jobs overseas. While existing studies show how nursing skills are exploited and undervalued, this paper argues that it is the process of skilling itself that allows for the accumulation of profit, regardless of whether nurses leave their origin countries to work abroad. This study reveals how global care economies are tightly linked to local …

Sequencing Dengue Control Policy In Singapore: An Evolutionary Perspective For Policy Design, Ishani Mukherjee, Panchali Guha

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

About half the global population is now at risk of contracting dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe morbidity and fatalities. Effective dengue control depends on controlling the mosquito vector, but finding the right mix of vector control policies has proved challenging. Using a content analysis of 208 Hansard records from parliamentary proceedings in Singapore, where dengue outbreaks have significantly increased in both frequency and magnitude since the early 1990s, we trace the processual evolution of Singapore’s anti-dengue policy mix from 1960 to 2023 and conclude that the evolution of dengue control policies is consistent with a customized …

Weather Rescue At Sea: Recovering Historical Weather Observations From 19th Century British Naval Ships, Praveen Teleti, Ed Hawkins, Clive Wilkinson

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Ship logbooks represent a critical source of historical meteorological data, providing valuable observations of barometric pressure, air temperature, sea surface temperature, wind force and direction, and other variables. Substantial quantities of these records are unavailable to climate science as they have not yet been transcribed. We present ‘Weather Rescue at Sea’, a citizen-science project which transcribed millions of weather observations contained in 19th Century UK Royal Navy ship logbooks. We describe the logbook structure and weather observation-taking instructions and discuss significant challenges with the translation of handwritten text into accurate data due to errors arising from ambiguous handwriting, historical terminology, …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Urban weather and climate modeling is constrained by the highly heterogeneous and dynamic nature of cities. It exhibits a persistent trilemma between spatial granularity, spatiotemporal coverage, and physical interpretability. We articulate this challenge and propose a hybrid framework that integrates physics -based models, urban observations, and machine learning. Framing urban modeling as an integration problem across methods and scales, we provide a structured guide for next -generation, decision -relevant urban climate capabilities.

Context Engineering For Ai Agents In Open-Source Software, Seyedmoein Mohsenimofidi, Matthias Galster, Christoph Treude, Sebastian Baltes

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GenAI-based coding assistants have disrupted software development. The next generation of these tools is agent-based, operating with more autonomy and potentially without human oversight. Like human developers, AI agents require contextual information to develop solutions that are in line with the standards, policies, and workflows of the software projects they operate in. Vendors of popular agentic tools (e.g., Claude Code) recommend maintaining version-controlled Markdown files that describe aspects such as the project structure, code style, or building and testing. The content of these files is then automatically added to each prompt. Recently, AGENTS.md has emerged as a potential standard that …

Large Language Models (LLMs) increasingly automate software engineering tasks. While recent studies highlight the accelerated adoption of “AI as a teammate” in Open Source Software (OSS), developer interaction patterns remain under-explored. In this work, we investigated project-level guidelines and developers’ interactions with AI-assisted pull requests (PRs) by expanding the AIDev dataset to include finer-grained contributor code ownership and a comparative baseline of human-created PRs. We found that over 67.5% of AI-co-authored PRs originate from contributors without prior code ownership. Despite this, the majority of repositories lack guidelines for AI-coding agent usage. Notably, we observed a distinct interaction pattern: AI-co-authored PRs …

Who Said Cve? How Vulnerability Identifiers Are Mentioned By Humans, Bots, And Agents In Pull Requests, Pien Rooijendijk, Christoph Treude, Mairieli Wessel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vulnerability identifiers such as CVE, CWE, and GHSA are standardised references to known software security issues, yet their use in practice is not well understood. This paper compares vulnerability ID use in GitHub pull requests authored by autonomous agents, bots, and human developers. Using the AIDev pop dataset and an augmented set of pull requests from the same repositories, we analyse who mentions vulnerability identifiers and where they appear. Bots account for around 69.1% of all mentions, usually adding few identifiers in pull request descriptions, while human and agent mentions are rarer but span more locations. Qualitative analysis shows that …

Autologger: A Multi-Agent Framework For The End-To-End Automated Logging, Renyi Zhong, Yintong Huo, Wenwei Gu, Yichen Li, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software logging is critical for system observability, yet developers face a dual crisis of costly overlogging and risky underlogging. Existing automated logging tools often overlook the fundamental whether-to-log decision and struggle with the composite nature of logging. In this paper, we propose AutoLogger, a novel hybrid framework that addresses the complete the end-to-end logging pipeline. AutoLogger first employs a fine-tuned classifier, the Judger, to accurately determine if a method requires new logging statements. If logging is needed, a multi-agent system is activated. The system includes specialized agents: a Locator dedicated to determining where to log, and a Generator focused on …

Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection And Localization With Spatio-Temporal Prompts, Peng Wu, Xuerong Zhou, Guansong Pang, Zhiwei Yang, Qingsen Yan, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang Apr 2026

Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection And Localization With Spatio-Temporal Prompts, Peng Wu, Xuerong Zhou, Guansong Pang, Zhiwei Yang, Qingsen Yan, Peng Wang, Yanning Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Current weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WSVAD) task aims to achieve frame-level anomalous event detection with only coarse video-level annotations available. Existing works typically involve extracting global features from full-resolution video frames and training frame-level classifiers to detect anomalies in the temporal dimension. However, most anomalous events tend to occur in localized spatial regions rather than the entire video frames, which implies existing frame-level feature based works may be misled by the dominant background information and lack the interpretation of the detected anomalies. To address this dilemma, this paper introduces a novel method called STPrompt that learns spatio-temporal prompt embeddings …

Portrait Shadow Removal Via Self-Exemplar Illumination Equalization, Qian Huang, Cheng Xu, Guiqing Li, Ziheng Wu, Shengxin Liu, Shengfeng He Apr 2026

Portrait Shadow Removal Via Self-Exemplar Illumination Equalization, Qian Huang, Cheng Xu, Guiqing Li, Ziheng Wu, Shengxin Liu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce the Self-Exemplar Illumination Equalization Network, designed specifically for effective portrait shadow removal. The core idea of our method is that partially shadowed portraits can find ideal exemplars within their non-shadowed facial regions. Rather than directly fusing two distinct classes of facial features, our approach utilizes non-shadowed regions as an illumination indicator to equalize the shadowed regions, generating deshadowed results without boundary-merging artifacts. Our network comprises cascaded Self-Exemplar Illumination Equalization Blocks (SExmBlock), each containing two modules: a self-exemplar feature matching module and a feature-level illumination rectification module. The former identifies and applies internal illumination exemplars to shadowed areas, producing …

Causality-Aware Safety Testing For Autonomous Driving Systems, Wenbing Tang, Mingfei Cheng, Renzhi Wang, Yuan Zhou, Chengwei Liu, Yang Liu, Zuohua Ding Apr 2026

Causality-Aware Safety Testing For Autonomous Driving Systems, Wenbing Tang, Mingfei Cheng, Renzhi Wang, Yuan Zhou, Chengwei Liu, Yang Liu, Zuohua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Simulation-based testing is essential for evaluating the safety of Autonomous Driving Systems (ADSs). Comprehensive evaluation requires testing across diverse scenarios that can trigger various types of violations under different conditions. While existing methods typically focus on individual diversity metrics, such as input scenarios, ADS-generated motion commands, and system violations, they often fail to capture the complex interrelationships among these elements. For instance, identical motion commands can produce different collision risks in varying scenes, and the same collision may result from different commands under different scenarios. This oversight leads to gaps in testing coverage, potentially missing critical issues in the ADS …

Developing Blockchain-Based Transparent E-Commerce Solutions For Danish Smes To Promote Sustainable Design Products, Somnath Mazumdar, Robert John Kauffman, Thomas Jensen, Raghava Rao Mukkamala, Jan Damsgaard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Typically, a firm's objectives include establishing consumer confidence, preserving its brand image, and developing a profitable business strategy. Consumers now place greater emphasis on the sustainability and transparency of their purchases. Given environmental and economic limitations, firms are often compelled to implement sustainable production methods. This is especially a struggle for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with new technology, as it can increase their risk of failure. This has led to a problem for consumers, who must cross-check the sustainability-related claims of the firms they buy from. This is challenging because of limited process trace data and restricted enforcement capabilities. …

Distributional Vision-Language Alignment By Cauchy-Schwarz Divergence, Wenzhe Yin, Zehao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Shujian Yu, Jiayi Shen, Jan-Jakob Sonke, Stratis Gavves Apr 2026

Distributional Vision-Language Alignment By Cauchy-Schwarz Divergence, Wenzhe Yin, Zehao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Shujian Yu, Jiayi Shen, Jan-Jakob Sonke, Stratis Gavves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vision-language alignment is crucial for various downstream tasks such as cross-modal generation and retrieval. Previous multimodal approaches like CLIP utilize InfoNCE to maximize mutual information, primarily aligning pairwise samples across modalities while overlooking distributional differences. In addition, InfoNCE has inherent conflict in terms of alignment and uniformity in multimodality, leading to suboptimal alignment with modality gaps. To overcome the limitations, we propose CS-Aligner, a novel framework that performs distributional vision-language alignment by integrating Cauchy-Schwarz (CS) divergence with mutual information. CS-Aligner captures both the global distribution information of each modality and the pairwise semantic relationships. We find that the CS divergence …

Managing Reproducibility Debt In Scientific Software: A Practical Framework, Zara Hassan, Christoph Treude, Graham Williams, Michael Norrish, Alex Potanin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Scientific software includes end-user applications, modelling tools, research software for publications, and production systems for real users. It plays a key role across various scientific disciplines by enabling large-scale computation, simulation, and data analysis. Unlike commercial software, scientific software is often developed in dynamic research environments with limited engineering practices, documentation, or testing. This makes it fragile and difficult to reproduce results, even when code and data are available, conditions in which Reproducibility Debt (RpD) accumulates. This paper presents the Reproducibility Debt Management Framework (RpD-MF), which is grounded in evidence from a systematic literature review, practitioner interviews, and a global …

Teamwise: Exploring Virtually Embodied Ai Facilitation For Video-Based Team Onboarding, Venkata Akhila Rani Obilisetty, Mikkeline Elleby, Anthony Tang, April Yi Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

AI-mediated facilitation has emerged as a scalable approach to supporting onboarding and coordination in newly formed remote teams, yet existing systems are predominantly text-based. To explore how video-based, virtually embodied AI facilitators shape team experiences, we present TeamWise, which joins video-based onboarding meetings as an on-screen avatar. TeamWise guides teams through a structured facilitation flow of low-stakes activities to foster rapport, mutual awareness, and shared identity. While the overall sequence of activities and facilitation goals is predefined, the facilitator’s turn-by-turn utterances are generated dynamically by an LLM in response to participant input. We conducted a formative study of TeamWise to …

Patchgpt: Multi-Agent Patch Backporting Without Model Fine-Tuning, Ye Liu, Ruidong Han, Chengyan Ma, Yuqing Niu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Patch backporting is crucial and prevalent in the maintenance of modern open-source software such as Linux kernels and forked repositories. However, porting patches across program versions remains a challenging problem due to the complexity of synergizing diverse patches with divergent program versions. In this paper, we propose PatchGPT, an agentic patch backporting framework for fine-grained patch generation. PatchGPT encompasses three agents: Miner for decomposing a sequence of atomic change steps as the original patch plan, Adapter for adapting the patch plan, and Executor for executing the adapted patch plan according to predefined change semantics. We conduct experiments on the PPatHF’s …

Understanding Codebase Like A Professional! Human-Ai Collaboration For Code Comprehension, Jie Gao, Yue Xue, Xiaofei Xie, Junming Cao, Soemin Thant, Erika Lee, Bowen Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding an unfamiliar codebase is an essential task for developers in various scenarios, such as during the onboarding process. Especially when the codebase is large and time is limited, achieving a decent level of comprehension remains challenging for both experienced and novice developers, even with the assistance of large language models (LLMs). Existing studies have shown that LLMs often fail to support users in understanding code structures or to provide user-centered, adaptive, and dynamic assistance in real-world settings. To address this, we propose learning from the perspective of a unique role, code auditors, whose work often requires them to quickly familiarize …

Structuring The Notional Imprisonment Period When The Accused Is Unfit To Plead – Abdul Ghufran Bin Abdul Wahid V Public Prosecutor, Abhishek Behera, Aaron Yoong

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This case comment examines how Abdul Ghufran bin Abdul Wahid v Public Prosecutor [2025] 3 SLR 1572 brings clarity to Singapore’s “fitness to plead” regime by structuring the nominal imprisonment period (“NIP”) as a principled, non-punitive ceiling on confinement for unfit accused persons. It explains the General Division of the High Court’s four-step framework, the elevation of prevention over rehabilitation at the NIP stage, and the constrained role of mental disorders in adjusting the provisional term. It further highlights the decisive influence of psychiatric evidence and explores how the framework mediates between consistency, individualised justice, and public protection.
