The Impact Of Vr-Based Service Innovation On Brand Equity, Pan Cheung
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The increasingly fierce competition in the service market have made service innovation a focal point of continuous attention and exploration in both academic and industry. The development of VR technology has provided new options for enterprises to innovate in services. However, employing VR technology for service innovation requires a certain level of cost investment and entails risks. Moreover, how using VR technology for service innovation will impact consumer cognition and behavior, and how this cognition will affect brand equity, remains unknown. These uncertainties hinder the application and development of VR technology in the service sector. Therefore, clearly understanding the benefits …
Research On Futures, Profit Hedging, And Enterprise Price Risk Management In The Bulk Commodity Industry Chain — A Case Study Of Hot-Rolled Coil Industry Chain, Shengxi Liu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Traditional hedging strategies usually center around a single product, commonly involving companies hedging against the price of their endproducts or essential production materials. At present, traditional hedgingstrategies are no longer sufficient to address the production and management requirements of physical enterprises. There is a need to develop hedgingstrategies aligning with the significant changes in both domestic andinternational markets.
The thesis presents a new profit hedging model based on product manufacturing processes within the industry chain. This method involves hedging production profits by buying (selling) end products and selling(buying) raw materials according to the proportional relationships in the production process on …

In the digital era, online retailers engage consumers through a variety of channels, making it critical to understand how multi-channel exposure impacts consumer behavior, purchase conversion and firm outcomes. Drawing upon information overload and attention theories as well as extant research on conversion models, this study examines how channel-specific browsing time and channel diversity influence online users’ conversion and revenue contribution. By utilizing a multi-touch attribution approach, this study analyzes user-level visit data from an online eyewear retailer including millions of visits over a three-month period and finds that cumulative browsing time has a positive impact on both conversion and …
Social Distance In Workplace Relationships And Its Impact On Employee Well-Being, Jha Nilotpal
Social Distance In Workplace Relationships And Its Impact On Employee Well-Being, Jha Nilotpal
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In modern collaborative work environments, interactions with colleagues span a spectrum from close relationships to those perceived as socially distant. While close relationships are traditionally emphasized for their benefits on well-being, distant ties often go overlooked despite their prevalence and ease of maintenance. Building on construal-level theory, I first propose a theory of relational construing, emphasizing how the perceived psychological distance with colleagues influences mental representations and shifts in these representations, termed mindful construing. Leveraging the full spectrum of workplace relationships, from close to distant, can enhance well-being by alleviating the burdens of maintaining solely close connections. I then use …
Learning To Outsmart A Crisis: A Strategic Management View On Managing Aviation Crises With Machine Learning, Kok Yew Tan
Learning To Outsmart A Crisis: A Strategic Management View On Managing Aviation Crises With Machine Learning, Kok Yew Tan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In strategic management literature, a crisis is public, unexpected, interferes with the norm, has negative impact on organizations, and generates widespread negative perceptions among stakeholders. Among crises, aviation crises are complex and present multiple vulnerabilities due to their scale, and the involvement of numerous stakeholders. With the high visibility of aviation crises due to the potential for mass injuries, deaths, and collateral damage, it could be seen as a full spectrum crisis – one of the worst among crises. The magnitude of each aviation crisis decides and allows the world to assess the efficacy of an airlines or aviation firm’s …

Enabling Sustainable Mining Via Ai-Based Techniques, Nurul Asyikeen Binte Azhar
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The precedence-constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP) in Long-Term Mine Planning (LTMP) is NP-hard and conventionally prioritizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of profits. Even so, heightened sustainability concerns necessitate heightened sustainable practices. Yet, research still lags. This dissertation addresses this paucity by integrating sustainability elements through Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO), introducing novel algorithms and proposing an uncertainty assessment within a dual Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) setup.
Firstly, our systematic review of past LTMP research focused on the PCPSP and highlighted sustainability elements. Overall, it furnished real-world components incorporated into mathematical formulations, trends, quality of solutions (efficacy) and computation time (efficiency) of …
When I Know Your Taste: Retail Customers’ Environmental Preferences And Firm Pollution, Mengjie Yang
When I Know Your Taste: Retail Customers’ Environmental Preferences And Firm Pollution, Mengjie Yang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
I examine whether and how firms incorporate retail customers’ environmental preferences into their pollution decisions. Leveraging the staggered revelations of firms’ environmental negative news and the granularity of household grocery shopping records, I quantify local customers’ heterogeneous environmental preferences based on the extent of product sales declines following the news events. In line with the conjecture that firms factor in rewards and penalties from customers and strategically reduce their pollution, I find a significant improvement in air quality near event firms’ facilities located in markets where local customers reveal the strongest environmental preferences. This effect is more pronounced when news …

The Impact Of Modernization On Mating Strategies In Iran: A Comparison Across Cities Versus Small Towns, Saeed Koohgard, Kai Lin Lynn Tan, Norman P. Li, Marzie Hashemi
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The mating market in Iran has shown an increased rate of relationship formation. In such relationships, the most important pillar is physical attractiveness. We adopt an evolutionary perspective to understand this trend. Through comparing districts with different levels of modernization, this study explores the effects of modernization on mate preferences in Iran. We propose that rapid modernization reduces the preference for long-term relationships and has led to a rise in short-term mating strategies. We predict that the rise of short-term mating strategies will be reflected in higher frequencies of relationships and prioritizing physical attraction in mateseeking in modern versus non-modern …

When Mothers Do It All: Gender-Role Norms And Women’S Fertility Intentions In Post-Industrial Societies, Sinn Won Han, Ohjae Gowen, Mary C. Brinton
When Mothers Do It All: Gender-Role Norms And Women’S Fertility Intentions In Post-Industrial Societies, Sinn Won Han, Ohjae Gowen, Mary C. Brinton
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Post-industrial countries with high rates of female labour force participation have generally had low fertility rates, but recent studies demonstrate that this is no longer the case. This has generated increased attention to how greater gender equality in the private sphere of the household may contribute to a positive relationship between women’s employment rates and fertility. Building on recent scholarship demonstrating the multidimensionality of gender-role attitudes, we argue that conversely, the prevalence of a gender-role ideology that supports women’s employment but places greater priority on their role as caregivers may depress the higher-order fertility intentions of working mothers. Using data …

"Just Beat It" Do Firms Reclassify Costs To Avoid The Base Erosion And Anti-Abuse Tax (Beat) Of The Tcja?, Stacie O. Laplante, Christina M. Lewellen, Daniel P. Pynch, David M. P. Samuel
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study examines whether multinational corporations (MNCs) reclassify related-party payments to avoid the new base erosion and anti-abuse tax (BEAT). The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act of 2017 included the BEAT to combat income shifting from the U.S. to foreign entities. An exclusion in the tax law provides MNCs an incentive to reclassify related-party payments as cost of goods sold. We use a triple-difference design that leverages the BEAT filing threshold of $500 million in revenue and the parent company’s location to document increases in the unconsolidated sales of foreign subsidiaries of MNCs subject to BEAT relative foreign subsidiaries of …
Why Citizens Engage In Co-Production: A Theoretical Framework And Experimental Evidence, Seulki Lee, Chongmin Na
Why Citizens Engage In Co-Production: A Theoretical Framework And Experimental Evidence, Seulki Lee, Chongmin Na
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Co-production has been embraced as a robust strategy to improve service quality and create public value. Despite growing interest in citizens’ motivations to engage in co-production, there remain some major gaps in the literature. This study proposes a theoretical framework of factors that influence co-production and offers experimental evidence as to the effects of those factors from an online survey experiment with a sample of 1,297 Koreans. The findings show that public service motivation, driven by normative motivations, is associated with greater willingness to co-produce. We find little effect of monetary or non-monetary rewards, input legitimacy, or individual characteristics such …

Motivations Matter: Moral And Health-Related Motives Indirectly Relate To Differential Psychological Health Indicators Among Vegetarians, Xiaoyu Dai, Angela K. Y. Leung
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Due to rising popularity of vegetarianism in recent years, research interest has surged in examining the relationship between vegetarianism and psychological health. However, given inconsistent findings in prior research, the answer to whether practicing vegetarianism is associated with better or worse psychological health is still elusive. The present investigation aimed to demonstrate that vegetarians are not homogeneous in terms of psychological experiences, such that it is crucial to consider the motives behind vegetarians’ dietary choice when examining their psychological health. In a survey study with 266 vegetarians and 104 omnivores, it was shown that health vegetarians displayed higher levels of …
Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems For Multiple Minority Subgroups And Multiple Criteria, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Currently used Pareto-optimal (PO) approaches for balancing diversity and validity goals in selection can deal only with one minority group and one criterion. These are key limitations because the workplace and society at large are getting increasingly diverse and because selection system designers often have interest in multiple criteria. Therefore, the article extends existing methods for designing PO selection systems to situations involving multiple criteria and multiple minority groups (i.e., multiobjective PO selection systems). We first present a hybrid multiobjective PO approach for computing selection systems that are PO with respect to (a) a set of quality objectives (i.e., criteria) …
Implementation And Evaluation Of Ai-Based Citizen Question-Answer Recommender (Acqar) To Enhance Citizen Service Delivery In Singapore Public Sector: A Case Study, Hui Shan Lee
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Government agencies prioritize citizen service delivery to foster trust with the public. Technological advancements, particularly in Artificial Intelligence (AI), hold promise for improving service provision and aligning government operations with citizens' needs. Yet the inherent inflexibility of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) often overlooks the nuances of human emotions and the varied nature of citizen inquiries, exacerbated by a lack of tools to guide appropriate responses. This dissertation aims to address the gaps of overlook of human emotions and non-support for appropriate responses, by exploring the following questions: (1) Can a predictive model incorporating both numeric and textual data effectively forecast …
Informed Trading In Peers Of M&A Firms: Evidence From M&A Advisor Banks, Xuanbo Li
Informed Trading In Peers Of M&A Firms: Evidence From M&A Advisor Banks, Xuanbo Li
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
M&A advisor banks are privy to valuable and sensitive information through their service. I examine whether M&A advisor banks exploit such private information to trade in peers of M&A firms. I provide evidence that M&A advisor banks gain higher profits through their trading in peers of M&A firms, compared with non-advisor banks. Such informed trading is more intensive for M&A deals with larger impacts on peer firms (i.e., when the deal value is more significant for peer firms; when the M&A firms have larger market share in the industry; and when the stock price reactions of peer firms are stronger). …

Can Organizational Focus On Responsible Ai Lead To Improved Ai Adoption By Employees?, Seema Chokshi
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The duality inherent in Artificial Intelligence technology entails that while AI has the potential to bring about transformative benefits to organizations, unintended consequences of AI applications could lead to biased and discriminatory outcomes, which could have negative consequences for the organization and society in general. Concerns about such unintended consequences are an impediment to AI adoption where unwilling employees and practitioners often fear ethical breaches, thereby, negatively impacting their engagement with AI driven applications. In response to these concerns various organizations and regulatory bodies have developed governing frameworks broadly known as Responsible AI standards, that set guidelines to design, …

Loose Purse Strings, Loose Cultures: How Resource Increase Affects Cultural Tightness-Looseness And Creativity In Large And Small Organizations, Caleb Chun Kwan Chu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
For over a decade, cultural tightness-looseness (TL) has established itself as a culture construct that is useful in diverse contexts at multiple levels. While most TL research has focused on TL consequences, less attention has been paid to TL antecedents. This dissertation proposes resource increase as a TL predictor and uses a resource-based perspective to review and extend extant TL literature. I empirically examine the effect of resource increase on incremental and radical creativity as mediated by TL at the team level. I also explore the moderating effect of organizational size on these team-level relationships. The data were drawn from …

Sequential Recommendation: From Representation Learning To Reasoning, Lei Wang
Sequential Recommendation: From Representation Learning To Reasoning, Lei Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The recommender system is a crucial component of today's online services. It helps users navigate through an overwhelmingly large number of items and discovering those that interest them. Unlike general recommender systems, which recommend items based on the user's overall preferences, sequential recommender systems consider the order of user-item interactions. Sequential recommendations aim to predict the next item a user will interact with, given a sequence of previously interacted items, while considering the short-term and long-term dependencies among items.
In this thesis, we focus on sequential recommendation methods: from representation learning to large language model (LLM)-based reasoning. On the one …

Using the Synthetic Control Method and data from the Annual Social and Economic supplement of the Current Population Survey, I assess how the introduction of the APFD payments in 1982 affected children’s living arrangements, as well as how it affected adults’ marital status and living arrangements. I find that the introduction of the APFD has several significant impacts on family structures. Specifically, female children and especially those aged 13 to 18 in Alaska are more likely to be living …
Ceo Polychronicity And Firm Resilience, Qianliang Xia
Ceo Polychronicity And Firm Resilience, Qianliang Xia
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In my dissertation, I examined the effect of CEO polychronicity on firm resilience. Building on the upper echelons theory, I argue that polychronic CEOs could divide their attention to multitask, which might prevent firms with extreme risk with more information acquired and backup plans reserved; in addition, polychronic CEOs should be more capable of handling the threats and disruptions. Thus, polychronic CEOs help build firm resilience. In addition, I propose the six moderators that could influence the effect of CEO polychronicity on firm resilience including market competition, market complexity, innovation capability, financial slack, TMT size and CEO duality. I collected …
