The New Aleph Silicon Vertex Detector, D. Creanza, Manoj Thulasidas May 1998

The New Aleph Silicon Vertex Detector, D. Creanza, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ALEPH collaboration, in view of the importance of effective vertex detection for the Higgs boson search at LEP 2, decided to upgrade the previous vertex detector. Main changes were an increased length (+/- 20 cm), a higher granularity for r phi view (50 mu m), a new preamplifier (MX7 rad hard chip), a polymide (upilex) fan-out on z side to carry the signals from the strips to the front-end electronics outside the fiducial region reducing consequently the passive material in the central region by a factor of two. The detector, the running experience and its performance will be described. …

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: A Survey Of Recent Developments, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester Apr 1998

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: A Survey Of Recent Developments, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck, Erik Demeulemeester

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review recent advances in dealing with the resource-constrained project scheduling problem using an efficient depth-first branch-and-bound procedure, elaborating on the branching scheme, bounding calculations and dominance rules, and discuss the potential of using truncated branch-and-bound. We derive conclusions from the research on optimal solution procedures for the basic problem and subsequently illustrate extensions to a rich and realistic variety of related problems involving activity preemption, the use of ready times and deadlines, variable resource requirements and availabilities, generalized precedence relations, time/cost, time/resource and resource/resource trade-offs and non-regular objective functions.

Functional Relations Among Constructs In The Same Content Domain At Different Levels Of Analysis: A Typology Of Composition Models, David Chan Apr 1998

Functional Relations Among Constructs In The Same Content Domain At Different Levels Of Analysis: A Typology Of Composition Models, David Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Composition models specify the functional relationships among phenomena or constructs at different levels of analysis (e.g., individual level, team level, organizational level) that reference essentially the same content but that are qualitatively different at different levels (M. T. Hannan, 1971, K. H. Roberts, C. L. Hulin, & D. M. Rousseau, 1978, D. M. Rousseau, 1985). Specifying adequate composition models is a critical component of good multilevel research. A typology of composition models is proposed to provide a framework for organizing, evaluating, and developing constructs and theories in multilevel research. Five basic forms of composition are described and illustrated. Implications of …

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan Mar 1998

Managing Creativity In Organizations: A Total System Approach, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizations need creativity to adapt to the fast-changing environment and revitalize itself. In response to this need, managers have invested in various single approaches, such as, creativity training programmes, team-building, and leadership development to improve creativity. This paper argues that managing creativity in organization is a complex problem and thus requires a more integrated approach. In this paper, I have provided a theoretical framework to explain how managers can foster and sustain creativity in their organizations using a total systems approach. In the framework, I depict the organization as having four subsystems, namely, culture, techno-structural subsystems, management and people. Each …

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Mar 1998

Telling Tales: Management Gurus' Narratives And The Construction Of Managerial Identity, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the reasons for the apparently powerful impact of management gurus' ideas (i.e. guru theory) on senior managers. An examination of the limited literature on management gurus and other related literatures suggests three explanations for the appeal of guru theory for senior managers. The first set of explanations relates to various features of management work which may heighten managers' receptivity to guru ideas. The second set focuses on the gurus themselves and emphasizes the form in which they are presented (i.e. public performances). The final set of explanations highlights the importance of the socioeconomic and cultural context within …

China's Reunification And International Security In Northeast Asia: After Hong Kong What?, James T. H. Tang Mar 1998

China's Reunification And International Security In Northeast Asia: After Hong Kong What?, James T. H. Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper examines the implications of Hong Kong's reunification with China oncross-strait relationship between mainland China and Taiwan. It begins with adiscussion of the international security situation in the region and the increasingimportance of the People's Republic of China on regional security. The paper thenaddresses the political and economic consequences of the sovereignty change overHong Kong on regional security, identifying the added strength to China on the onehand, and the Special Administrative Region's moderating influences on the other. Finally, it evaluates possible changes of the Beijing government's Taiwan policy. Inconclusion, the paper argues that China's reunion with Hong Kong may have …

Refocusing On Qualitative Methods: Problems And Prospects For Research In A Specific Asian Context, Lily Kong Mar 1998

Refocusing On Qualitative Methods: Problems And Prospects For Research In A Specific Asian Context, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A recent issue of Area (1996, Volume 28.2) devoted space to six papers on focus groups, attesting to their increasing importance as a means of obtaining qualitative data. The papers provided interesting insights into the use of focus groups in specific research and cultural contexts, and raised three main issues in my mind. The first is a continuing misunderstanding as to the nature of knowledge, which surfaces in discussions of, and approaches to, the use of qualitative methods such as focus groups. The second is the range of related techniques that are actually involved in the qualitative method, known as …

Measurement Of Triple Gauge-Boson Couplings At 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al, M. Thulasidas Mar 1998

Measurement Of Triple Gauge-Boson Couplings At 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The triple gauge-boson couplings, αWΦ, αW and αBΦ, have been measured using 34 semileptonically and 54 hadronically decaying W+W− candidate events. The events were selected in the data recorded during 1996 with the ALEPH detector at 172 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.65 pb−1. The triple gauge-boson couplings have been measured using optimal observables constructed from kinematic information of W+W− events. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

A Signcryption Scheme With Signature Directly Verifiable By Public Key, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Feb 1998

A Signcryption Scheme With Signature Directly Verifiable By Public Key, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Signcryption, first proposed by Zheng, is a cryptographic primitive which combines both the functions of digital signature and public key encryption in a logical single step, and with a computational cost significantly lower than that needed by the traditional signature-then-encryption approach. In Zheng's scheme, the signature verification can be done either by the recipient directly (using his private key) or by engaging a zero-knowledge interative protocol with a third party, without disclosing recipient's private key. In this note, we modify Zheng's scheme so that the recipient's private key is no longer needed in signature verification. The computational cost of the …

Four-Jet Final State Production In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Ranging From 130 To 184 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas Feb 1998

Four-Jet Final State Production In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Ranging From 130 To 184 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The four jet topology is analysed in the ALEPH data taken between November 1995 and October 1997, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 to 184 GeV. While an unexpected accumulation of events with a dijet mass sum around 105 GeV/c 2 had been observed during the first run in 1995 at 130/136 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7 pb1 , no significant dierences between data and standard model prediction is seen, either in the high energy runs (81.1 pb1 taken at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 184 GeV) or in the 7.1 pb1 recorded during a new short …

A Visual Object-Relationship Query Language For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau Feb 1998

A Visual Object-Relationship Query Language For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User–database interaction has a direct and immediate effect on the effectiveness and efficiency of database end users. Traditional query languages like SQL and QBE require end users to understand the underlying data structure in the database. This is a burden on end users, especially novice end users who have little technical knowledge or understanding of database. To alleviate the need for end users to know the logical database organization, this paper proposes the use of an object–relationship (OR) model and a formal high-level visual query language as the interface. Using this interface, end users communicate only domain knowledge with the …

Search For Evidence Of Compositeness At Lep I, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Search For Evidence Of Compositeness At Lep I, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Extensive searches for evidence of compositeness of quarks and leptons have been made in the complete set of ALEPH data from LEP running at the Z peak. These include searches for radiative and weak decays of excited fermions, produced either in pairs or singly, and a scalar partner of the Z. Coupling and branching ratio limits deduced from these searches are presented.

Commentary On 'The Renegotiation Of Contracts', Howard Hunter Jan 1998

Commentary On 'The Renegotiation Of Contracts', Howard Hunter

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Professor John Carter has identified a theme of growing importance in commercial transactions, especially as the number of those that are long in duration and that cross political or cultural lines increases. It is difficult under the best of circumstances ex ante to negotiate for all contingencies in a dynamic economy. Allowing, or requiring, post hoc renegotiations every time there is a change in circumstances could reduce substantially the utility of contract as a risk allocation device that provides some measure of privately ordered certainty unless the use of post hoc renegotiation is carefully circumscribed.

An Upper Limit On The Τ Neutrino Mass From Three- And Five-Prong Tau Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

An Upper Limit On The Τ Neutrino Mass From Three- And Five-Prong Tau Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A bound on the tau neutrino mass is established using the data collected from 1991 to 1995 at s√≃mZ with the ALEPH detector. Two separate limits are derived by fitting the distribution of visible energy vs invariant mass in τ−→2π−π+ντ and τ−→3π−2π+(π0)ντ decays. The two results are combined to obtain a 95% confidence level upper limit of 18.2 MeV/c2 on the mass of the tau neutrino.

Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Observation Of Doubly-Charmed B Decays At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A search for doubly-charmed B decays with both charmed mesons reconstructed is performed, using about 3.8 million hadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP. A clear signal is observed in the channels B→DsD¯(X)B→DsD¯(X) and B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) (where D can be either a D00, a D++ or a D∗+∗+), providing the first direct evidence for doubly-charmed B decays involving no DsDs production. Evidence for associated K0SKS0 and K±K± production in the decays B→DD¯(X)B→DD¯(X) is also presented and some candidates for completely reconstructed decays B→DsD¯(nπ)B→DsD¯(nπ), B→DD¯K0SB→DD¯KS0 and B→DD¯K±B→DD¯K± are observed. Furthermore, candidates for the two-body Cabibbo suppressed decays B0→D∗−D∗+B0→D∗−D∗+ and …

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The data recorded by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170, and 172 GeV are analysed for signals of chargino and neutralino production. No evidence of a signal is found, although candidate events consistent with the expectations from Standard Model processes are observed. Limits at 95% C.L. on the production cross sections are derived and bounds on the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are set. The lower limit on the mass of the lightest ch is 85.5 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for gaugino-like charginos (μ=−500GeV/c2μ=−500GeV/c2), and 85.0 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for Higgsino-like charginos (M2=500GeV/c2M2=500GeV/c2), for heavy sneutrinos (Mν~≥200GeV/c2Mν~≥200GeV/c2) and tanβ=2–√tan⁡β=2. The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini Jan 1998

The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Two standards of behavior are slugging it out around the world. Advocates of well-established norms such as corporate privacy and national sovereignty want to hide information from prying eyes, while promoters of transparency tout it as the solution to everything from international financial crises to arms races and street crime. Just what is transparency? Put simply, transparency is the opposite of secrecy. Secrecy means deliberately hiding your actions; transparency means deliberately revealing them. This element of volition makes the growing acceptance of transparency much more than a resigned surrender to the technologically facilitated intrusiveness of the Information Age. Transparency is …

Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan Jan 1998

Predictors Of Coping Behavior After A Layoff, Carrie R. Leana, Daniel C. Feldman, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A study examined the effects of individual differences and situational characteristics on individuals' use of 6 job loss coping strategies among laid-off industrial workers. In each case the predictors explained a significant portion of the variance (30%-47%) although different predictors were significantly associated with each of the 6 coping strategies. The results also suggest that the use of problem-focused and symptom-focused coping strategies are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.

Lee Kuan Yew And His Use Of Spatial-Orientational Metaphors, Siow Heng Ong Jan 1998

Lee Kuan Yew And His Use Of Spatial-Orientational Metaphors, Siow Heng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Prime Minister's message to the nation after Singapore separated from Malaysia was one of consolidation and moving ahead. This was not an easy task for the speaker as the year before Singapore separated from Malaysia, the race riots had claimed 34 lives.1 These riots were even more prolonged than the Hertogh riots of 1950. Maintaining racial harmony and social integration was an uphill task. The hope for consolidation and a united sense of nationhood seemed distant.

Brand Extensions In A Competitive Context: Effects Of Competitive Targets And Product Attribute Typicality On Perceived Quality, Jin K. Han Jan 1998

Brand Extensions In A Competitive Context: Effects Of Competitive Targets And Product Attribute Typicality On Perceived Quality, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Brand extensions have proliferated over the past decade, and the rationale behind endowing a new product with a well-known brand name is to provide consumers--and the trade--with a sense of familiarity and security by leveraging positive brand characteristics in a new product category. Although brand extensions have become a standard strategy for new product introductions in today's fiercely competitive marketplace, the extant literature has examined brand extensions as if they occur in a competitive vacuum. This study attempts to fill this void by examining brand extensions in a competitive context. Specifically, brand-extension strategy in a competitive context includes two key …

From Entrepot To Nic: Economic And Structural Policy Aspects Of Singapore's Development, Jochen Wirtz, Thomas Menkhoff Jan 1998

From Entrepot To Nic: Economic And Structural Policy Aspects Of Singapore's Development, Jochen Wirtz, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper describes the development of Singapore from an entrepot to an industrialized economy and analyzes the role of its structural and industrial policies as one important factor in this success story. The advance of Singapore to an industrialized economy can be structured into four phases. Phase I, the early phase from 1959 to the mid-1960s is characterized by an import substitution policy followed together with Malaysia. Phase II describes the enhanced export-orientation and industrialization from 1967 to 1973. Phase III includes the industrial restructuring from 1973 to 1984. Phase IV describes the development towards diversification of the industrial base …

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Jan 1998

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article adopts a novel approach by examining the activities of management consultants in terms of the dramaturgical metaphor. This is a useful framework within which to illuminate their activities since a number of service characteristics combine to create a context within which the key task of management consultants is to convince clients of their quality and value. Impression management is therefore a core feature of consultancy work. In this sense management consultants are viewed as systems of persuasion creating compelling images which persuade clients of their quality and worth. This argument is illustrated with reference to the activities of …

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie Jan 1998

A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigated within-source interrater reliability of supervisor, peer, and subordinate feedback ratings made for managerial development. Raters provided 360-degree feedback ratings on a sample of 153 managers. Using generalizability theory, results indicated that little within-source agreement exists; a large portion of the error variance is attributable to the combined rater main effect and Rater X Ratee effect; more raters are needed than currently used to reach acceptable levels of reliability; supervisors are the most reliable with trivial differences between peers and subordinates when the numbers of raters and items are held constant; and peers are the most reliable, followed …

An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Jan 1998

An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we consider the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with discounted cash flows and generalized precedence relations (RCPSPDC-GPR). The RCPSPDC-GPR extends the RCPSP to (a) arbitrary minimal and maximal time lags between the starting and completion times of activities and (b) the non-regular objective function of maximizing the net present value of the project with positive and/or negative cash flows associated with the activities. To the best of our knowledge, the literature on the RCPSPDC-GPR is completely void. We present a depth-first branch-and-bound algorithm in which the nodes in the search tree represent the original project network extended …

Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey Jan 1998

Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a conceptual framework of the marketing-finance interface and discuss its implications for the theory and practice of marketing. The framework proposes that marketing is concerned with the task of developing and managing market-based assets, or assets that arise from the commingling of the firm with entities in its external environment. Examples of market-based assets include customer relationships, channel relationships, and partner relationships. Market-based assets, in turn, increase shareholder value by accelerating and enhancing cash flows, lowering the volatility and vulnerability of cash flows, and increasing the residual value of cash flows. Evaluation Of Information Modeling Methods: A Review, Keng Siau, Matti Rossi Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Information Modeling Methods: A Review, Keng Siau, Matti Rossi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hundreds of modeling methods are in existence today. Yet practitioners and researchers are zealously "producing" new modeling methods. The "blooming" of modeling methods is not the problem; the lack of standardize techniques for evaluating them is. To further complicate the matter, most of the modeling methods are introduced based on common sense and intuition. Theoretical foundations and empirical evidence are severely lacking. With the current state of affairs, evaluation of modeling methods has become necessary. Comparing modeling methods provides us with the necessary knowledge and understanding on the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This knowledge can also guide us …
