Ica-Fx Features For Classification Of Singing Voice And Instrumental Sound, Tat-Wan Leung, Chong-Wah Ngo, Rynson W. H Lau Aug 2004

Ica-Fx Features For Classification Of Singing Voice And Instrumental Sound, Tat-Wan Leung, Chong-Wah Ngo, Rynson W. H Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a new approach in locating the segments of singing voice in pop musical songs. Initially, GLR distance measure is employed to temporally detect the boundaries of singing voices and instrumental sounds. ICAFX is then adopted to extract the independent components of acoustic features for SVM classification. Experimental results indicate that ICA-FX can improve the classification performance by significantly reducing the independent components that are not related to class label information.

Gesture Tracking And Recognition For Lecture Video Editing, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong Aug 2004

Gesture Tracking And Recognition For Lecture Video Editing, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a gesture based driven approach for video editing. Given a lecture video, we adopt novel approaches to automatically detect and synchronize its content with electronic slides. The gestures in each synchronized topic (or shot) are then tracked and recognized continuously. By registering shots and slides and recovering their transformation, the regions where the gestures take place can be known. Based on the recognized gestures and their registered positions, the information in slides can be seamlessly extracted, not only to assist video editing, but also to enhance the quality of original lecture video.

Deformable Geometry Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Signatures, Kwok-Leung Tam, Rynson W.H. Law, Chong-Wah Ngo Aug 2004

Deformable Geometry Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Signatures, Kwok-Leung Tam, Rynson W.H. Law, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient 3D model comparison. The method matches highly deformed models by comparing topological and geometric features. First, we propose “Bi-directional LSD analysis” to locate reliable topological points and rings. Second, based on these points and rings, a set of bounded regions are extracted as topological features. Third, for each bounded region, we capture additional spatial location, curvature and area distribution as geometric data. Fourth, to model the topological importance of each bounded region, we capture its effective area as weight. By using “Earth Mover Distance” as a distance measure between two …

Group-Based Relevance Feedback With Support Vector Machine Ensembles, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Aug 2004

Group-Based Relevance Feedback With Support Vector Machine Ensembles, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Support vector machines (SVMs) have become one of the most promising techniques for relevance feedback in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Typical SVM-based relevance feedback techniquessimply apply the strict binary classifications: positive (relevant) class and negative (irrelevant) class. However, in a real-world relevance feedback task, it is more reasonable and practical to assume the data come from multiple positive classes and one negative class. In order to formulate an effective relevance feedback algorithm, we propose a novel group-based relevance feedback scheme constructed with the SVM ensembles technique. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme and the traditional …

Exploring The Black Box: The Impact Of Demographic Diversity On Organizational Attachment Through Communication, Wei Hua Aug 2004

Exploring The Black Box: The Impact Of Demographic Diversity On Organizational Attachment Through Communication, Wei Hua

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper studies the demographic diversity/similarity of individuals with members of their work environments through the lens of their perceived organizational context, and uses communication as the mechanism through which employees develop organizational attachment. I investigate the black box between demographic diversity and organizational attachment from two angels. First, a process model with communication as the mediator provides one explanation of why the relationship exists. Second, this study extends the current literature on organizational demography from a group level to a perceived organizational level phenomenon by proposing and examining the importance of an individual’s “organizational reference group” as an essential …

Transport Logistics Planning With Service-Level Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. M. Ng, Xintao Wu Jul 2004

Transport Logistics Planning With Service-Level Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. M. Ng, Xintao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study a logistics problem arising in military transport planning. A military organization operates a large fleet of vehicles in a depot to serve the requests of various operational units. Each request has a fixed start and end time, and is served by a prescribed number of vehicles. We address the following two problems: (1) how many vehicles are at least needed to meet a given service level of requests; and (2) suppose we allow each request to shift its start time by a constant duration, call all the requests be met? A Niche genetic algorithm, together …

The Eu And The Npt: Testing The New European Nonproliferation Strategy, Clara Portela Jul 2004

The Eu And The Npt: Testing The New European Nonproliferation Strategy, Clara Portela

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Only a few years ago, the idea that the European Union (EU) could become a significant actor in the nuclear nonproliferation regime would have met with great scepticism. An organisation comprising nuclear weapon states (NWS) along with non-nuclear weapons states (NNWS) - some of who are disarmament-minded - would have been considered incapable of framing any common response to nuclear proliferation. And yet, today we find that the EU is establishing itself as an actor in the field of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and that it has even developed a Strategy to guide its endeavours. This article will …

The Politics Of Wto Enforcement Mechanism, Pao Li Chang Jul 2004

The Politics Of Wto Enforcement Mechanism, Pao Li Chang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper attempts to develop a formal economic framework to analyze the influences of domestic political considerations by democratic governments in shaping the WTO enforcement outcomes following a violation ruling against the defendant. Since a different mix of import and export sectors in the defendant and complainant country will benefit from the various potential enforcement outcomes, they become competing forces which steer the strategic interactions between the disputing governments. The results of the paper illustrate the complainant's strategy in selecting the retaliation list, and the likelihood of the defendant's compliance or compensation in response to the proposed or foreseeable retaliation, …

The Relationship Among Export Assistance, Pricing Strategy Adaptation To The Foreign Market, And Performance Improvement, Luis Filipe Lages, David B. Montgomery Jul 2004

The Relationship Among Export Assistance, Pricing Strategy Adaptation To The Foreign Market, And Performance Improvement, Luis Filipe Lages, David B. Montgomery

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The increasing amount of export assistance provided to firms of rich and poor countries shows the high priority given by national and international policy makers to the encouragement of international trade. Despite this, relatively few international marketing researchers have discussed the effectiveness of such export assistance. This exploratory study provides an empirical foundation for simultaneously analyzing the effects of export assistance on the decision to adapt or standardize the domestic pricing strategy to the main foreign market and ultimately improve a firm’s short-term export performance. Surprisingly, the findings reveal that the total effects of export assistance on short-term export performance …

Analysis Of Limit Order Book And Order Flow, Charlie Charoenwong, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, David K. Ding Jul 2004

Analysis Of Limit Order Book And Order Flow, Charlie Charoenwong, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, David K. Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper extensively employs the order and trade data to analyze the shape of limit order book and the behavior of strategic order submission. The order book of stocks exhibits weakly convex pattern on the bid side due to wide price spreads away from the market. This characteristic of liquidity is particularly strong for the small stocks with large minimum tick size. In addition, the same order type occurs more frequently after the event had occurred than it would unconditionally. This diagonal effect is not fully explained by the order splitting. Moreover, the determinants driving order aggressiveness include bid-ask spread, …

Infrastructure can be unreliable and administration subject to corruption in Asia’s rapidly emerging economies. This context presented Singapore with unique opportunities to export its ‘positive reputation’ to locations where these attributes are less certain, through the provision of superior infrastructure, the ability to negotiate investment concessions and, where existing, through the links to influential business groups in the investment location. This strategic initiative is premised on the perception that Singapore’s good relations with multinationals, as well as “connections” with Asian business networks, will give the industrial-township projects a marketing advantage. To complement the extensive literature on Singapore’s flagship projects in …

The Impact Of Culture On Accounting Choices: Can Cultural Conservatism Explain Accounting Conservatism?, Tony Kang, Lian Fen Lee, Jeffrey Ng, Joanne Tay Jul 2004

The Impact Of Culture On Accounting Choices: Can Cultural Conservatism Explain Accounting Conservatism?, Tony Kang, Lian Fen Lee, Jeffrey Ng, Joanne Tay

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We explore the extent to which cultural conservatism explains accounting conservatism. Our primary measure for accounting conservatism is the magnitude of non-operating accruals, which are highly discretionary in nature. Culture permeates values and attitudes, and thus governs many aspects of human behavior. Hence it is likely to affect managers’ accounting choice behaviors. However, there is surprisingly little evidence on the association between the two types of conservatism in the literature. Using a sample of 800 firms originating from 21 countries during the nine-year period from 1993 to 2001, we find strong evidence that the managers in more conservative cultural environments …

A Support-Ordered Trie For Fast Frequent Itemset Discovery, Ee Peng Lim, Yew-Kwong Woon, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The importance of data mining is apparent with the advent of powerful data collection and storage tools; raw data is so abundant that manual analysis is no longer possible. Unfortunately, data mining problems are difficult to solve and this prompted the introduction of several novel data structures to improve mining efficiency. Here, we critically examine existing preprocessing data structures used in association rule mining for enhancing performance in an attempt to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Our analyses culminate in a practical structure called the SOTrielT (support-ordered trie itemset) and two synergistic algorithms to accompany it for the fast discovery …

Embedded Co-Operation In The Context Of Singapore's Investment Enclaves In Indonesia And Vietnam: A Strategy Reconsidered, Caroline Yeoh, Siang Yeung Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Regional industrial development projects - development packages assembled, administered and promoted by consortia of sovereign national governments - are new players in the global competition for foreign investments. Singapore's flagship projects in China have received much attention. Our paper reports on Singapore's lesser-known projects in Indonesia and Vietnam. The strategic intent of these transborder industrialization initiatives is to set in place a configuration for the city-state to restructure its domestic industries, and yet retain important linkages with production centers in low-cost environments. The effectiveness of this stratagem is evaluated from the perspectives of the tenant firms, as well as from …

Taking Dcop To The Real World: Efficient Complete Solutions For Distributed Event Scheduling, Rajiv Maheswaran, Milind Tambe, Emma Bowring, Jonathan Pearce, Pradeep Varakantham Jul 2004

Taking Dcop To The Real World: Efficient Complete Solutions For Distributed Event Scheduling, Rajiv Maheswaran, Milind Tambe, Emma Bowring, Jonathan Pearce, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed Constraint Optimization (DCOP) is an elegant formalism relevant to many areas in multiagent systems, yet complete algorithms have not been pursued for real world applications due to perceived complexity. To capably capture a rich class of complex problem domains, we introduce the Distributed Multi-Event Scheduling (DiMES) framework and design congruent DCOP formulations with binary constraints which are proven to yield the optimal solution. To approach real-world efficiency requirements, we obtain immense speedups by improving communication structure and precomputing best case bounds. Heuristics for generating better communication structures and calculating bound in a distributed manner are provided and tested on …

Biased Support Vector Machine For Relevance Feedback In Image Retrieval, Steven Hoi, Chi-Hang Chan, Kaizhu Huang, Michael R. Lyu, Irwin King Jul 2004

Biased Support Vector Machine For Relevance Feedback In Image Retrieval, Steven Hoi, Chi-Hang Chan, Kaizhu Huang, Michael R. Lyu, Irwin King

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, support vector machines (SVMs) have been engaged on relevance feedback tasks in content-based image retrieval. Typical approaches by SVMs treat the relevance feedback as a strict binary classification problem. However, these approaches do not consider an important issue of relevance feedback, i.e. the unbalanced dataset problem, in which the negative instances largely outnumber the positive instances. For solving this problem, we propose a novel technique to formulate the relevance feedback based on a modified SVM called biased support vector machine (Biased SVM or BSVM). Mathematical formulation and explanations are provided for showing the advantages. Experiments are conducted to evaluate …

Notes On Equilibria In Symmetric Games, Shih-Fen Cheng, Daniel M. Reeves, Yevgeniy Vorobeychik, Michael P. Wellman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a symmetric game, every player is identical with respect to the game rules. We show that a symmetric 2strategy game must have a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. We also discuss Nash’s original paper and its generalized notion of symmetry in games. As a special case of Nash’s theorem, any finite symmetric game has a symmetric Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, symmetric infinite games with compact, convex strategy spaces and continuous, quasiconcave utility functions have symmetric pure-strategy Nash equilibria. Finally, we discuss how to exploit symmetry for more efficient methods of finding Nash equilibria.

Visualising The Adr Landscape, Nadja Alexander Jul 2004

Visualising The Adr Landscape, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Access to ADR can be conceptualised in a number of ways. Some commentators focus on the court or the legal profession as a central access point for disputes. While this may seem natural for lawyers and judges, such an approach fails to account for the vast majority of disputes – approximately 80 per cent – that never see a lawyer, let alone a court. Other commentators focus on private or community-based applications of ADR as well as transactional applications of mediation such as contract negotiations. Yet others analyse ADR from the perspective of particular stakeholder groups such as industry, insurers, …

Forecasting The Global Electronics Cycle With Leading Indicators: A Var Approach, Hwee Kwan Chow Jul 2004

Forecasting The Global Electronics Cycle With Leading Indicators: A Var Approach, Hwee Kwan Chow

Research Collection School Of Economics

Developments in the global electronics industry are typically monitored by tracking indicators that span a whole spectrum of activities in the sector. However, these indicators invariably give mixed signals at each point in time, thereby hampering efforts at prediction. In this paper, we propose a unified framework for forecasting the global electronics cycle by constructing a VAR model that captures the economic interactions between leading indicators representing expectations, orders, inventories and prices. The ability of the indicators to presage world semiconductor sales is first demonstrated by Granger causality tests. The VAR model is then used to derive the dynamic paths …

Monotonicity Conditions And Inequality Imputation For Sample-Selection And Non-Response Problems, Myoung-Jae Lee Jul 2004

Monotonicity Conditions And Inequality Imputation For Sample-Selection And Non-Response Problems, Myoung-Jae Lee

Research Collection School Of Economics

Under a sample selection or non-response problem, where a response variable y is observed only when a condition δ = 1 is met, the identified mean E(y|δ = 1) is not equal to the desired mean E(y). But the monotonicity condition E(y|δ = 1) ≤ E(y|δ = 0) yields an informative bound E(y|δ = 1) ≤ E(y), which is enough for certain inferences. For example, in a majority voting with δ being the vote-turnout, it is enough to know if E(y) > 0.5 or not, for which E(y|δ = 1) > 0.5 is sufficient under the monotonicity. The main question is then …

Estimation Of Hyperbolic Diffusion Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method, Yiu Kuen Tse, Xibin Zhang, Jun Yu Jul 2004

Estimation Of Hyperbolic Diffusion Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method, Yiu Kuen Tse, Xibin Zhang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we propose a Bayesian method to estimate the hyperbolic diffusion model. The approach is based on the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method with the likelihood of the discretized process as the approximate posterior likelihood. We demonstrate that the MCMC method Provides a useful tool in analysing hyperbolic diffusions. In particular, quantities of posterior distributions obtained from the MCMC outputs can be used for statistical inference. The MCMC method based on the Milstein scheme is unsatisfactory. Our simulation study shows that the hyperbolic diffusion exhibits many of the stylized facts about asset returns documented in the discrete-time …

An Empirical Investigation On End-Users’ Acceptance Of Enterprise Systems, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Xin Tan, Soon Hing Teh Jul 2004

An Empirical Investigation On End-Users’ Acceptance Of Enterprise Systems, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Xin Tan, Soon Hing Teh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite the huge investments by organizations in ERP implementation, maintenance, and user training, ERP implementation failures and less-than-satisfactory productivity improvements are common. End-users’ reluctance or unwillingness to adopt or use the newly implemented ERP system is often cited as one of the main reasons for ERP failures. To examine factors leading to the lack of end-user acceptance of ERP systems, we reviewed the literature on user adoption of IT in mandatory contexts, developed hypotheses to explain ERP user acceptance, and conducted a survey study to test the hypotheses. In particular, we examined end-users’ attitudes toward system use and symbolic adoption, …

Transverse-Leaky-Mode Characteristics Of Arrow Vcsels, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu, N. S. Chen Jul 2004

Transverse-Leaky-Mode Characteristics Of Arrow Vcsels, Chyng Wen Tee, S. F. Yu, N. S. Chen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Transverse-leaky-mode characteristics of antiresonant-reflecting-optical-waveguide (ARROW) vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are studied. It is found that the suppression of high-order transverse leaky modes in ARROW VCSELs can be deteriorated by the influence of spatial hole burning and thermal lensing effects. On the other hand, a new design rule is proposed to deduce the optimum dimensions of ARROW so that the suppression of high-order transverse leaky modes can be enhanced. Furthermore, the turn-on transient response of ARROW VCSELs is investigated. It is found that the radiation loss has significant influence on the built-up time of the first-order transverse leaky mode.

Singapore's Foray Into Bangalore, India: An Empirical Review, Amrit Vaidyanath, Caroline Yeoh, Siang Yeung Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Singapore’s regionalization stratagem led to the establishment of industrial parks in China, India and several South-East Asian countries. The strategic intent behind these overseas projects was two-fold: exporting Singapore’s competencies such as management know-how, technological capabilities and corrupt-free administration to regions where such positive factors were lacking and secondly, exploiting comparative advantages that each region had to offer. This paper investigates Singapore’s foray into India, through the technology park in Bangalore. It evaluates the location specific benefits of the site, primarily in terms of abundant and low-cost labor resources. Accompanied by empirical findings, this study finds that, while location-specific merits …
