This paper traces the theoretical approaches of creative training to the 4 Ps of creativity research, namely, People, Process, Product and Press. It discusses some practical considerations that need to be taken into account to ensure success in creativity training programs. These considerations include: (a) accommodating individual differences; (b) addressing resistance; (c) demonstrating impact and results; (d) ensuring transfer-of-training; and (e) overcoming time and resource constraint. The paper concludes with the IDEAL tips on creativity training.
Substitution Or Symbolic Effects? A Reexamination Of Corporate Governance And Firm Performance, Xuesong Geng, Dean Hennessy, Kimberly Bates
Substitution Or Symbolic Effects? A Reexamination Of Corporate Governance And Firm Performance, Xuesong Geng, Dean Hennessy, Kimberly Bates
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this paper, we use a sample of large Canadian corporations to test the substitution hypothesis and the symbolic hypothesis. We find that the positive effect of board independence on firm performance declines as managerial ownership increases. This effect becomes non-positive when highly concentrated managerial ownership makes independent board more symbolic than effective.
Personal Taxes, Endogenous Default, And Corporate Bond Yield Spreads, Sheen X. Liu, Howard Qi, Chunchi Wu
Personal Taxes, Endogenous Default, And Corporate Bond Yield Spreads, Sheen X. Liu, Howard Qi, Chunchi Wu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Term structure models have often been criticized for failing to explain satisfactorily the yield spread between corporate and Treasury bonds. A potential problem is that the personal tax effect is ignored in these models. In this paper, we employ a structural model to investigate the role of personal taxes on both debt and equity returns in capital structure decisions and assess their impact on corporate bond yield spreads. It is shown that personal taxes affect the firm's optimal capital structure, and the tax premium explains a substantial portion of yield spreads, especially for high-grade bonds. The predictive ability of the …

Along with the rapidly burgeoning Asian economy, the financial markets in the region have seen spectacular development during the past few decades. Several recent statistics will best illustrate their success. Net capital flows to Asia and Pacific over 1999 to 2003 constituted 40% of total flows to emerging markets and about 13.9% of the world's FDI flows. Over 90% of net capital flows to the Asia Pacific region has been in the form of equity and portfolio investment. By the end of 2004, Asia's share (including Japan) in world equity market capitalization has grown to 21%, with a total market …

Can Online Reviews Reveal A Product's True Quality? Empirical Findings Analytical Modeling Of Online Word-Of-Mouth Communication, Nan Hu, Paul Pavlou, Jennifer Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As a digital version of word-of-mouth, online review has become a major information source for consumers and has very important implications for a wide range of management activities. While some researchers focus their studies on the impact of online product review on sales, an important assumption remains unexamined, that is, can online product review reveal the true quality of the product? To test the validity of this key assumption, this paper first empirically tests the underlying distribution of online reviews with data from Amazon. The results show that 53% of the products have a bimodal and non-normal distribution. For these …
On The Release Of Crls In Public Key Infrastructure, Chengyu Ma, Nan Hu, Yingjiu Li
On The Release Of Crls In Public Key Infrastructure, Chengyu Ma, Nan Hu, Yingjiu Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Public key infrastructure provides a promising foundation for verifying the authenticity of communicating parties and transferring trust over the internet. The key issue in public key infrastructure is how to process certificate revocations. Previous research in this aspect has concentrated on the tradeoffs that can be made among different revocation options. No rigorous efforts have been made to understand the probability distribution of certificate revocation requests based on real empirical data. In this study, we first collect real empirical data from VeriSign and derive the probability function for certificate revocation requests. We then prove that a revocation system will become …
Strategic Investments In Japanese Corporations: Do Foreign Portfolio Owners Foster Underinvestment Or Appropriate Investment?, Parthiban David, Toru Yoshikawa, Murali D. R. Chari, Abdul A. Rasheed
Strategic Investments In Japanese Corporations: Do Foreign Portfolio Owners Foster Underinvestment Or Appropriate Investment?, Parthiban David, Toru Yoshikawa, Murali D. R. Chari, Abdul A. Rasheed
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper investigates the effect of foreign ownership on strategic investments in Japanese corporations. Foreign owners are typically portfolio investors who frequently buy and sell shares and hold diversified portfolios of small stakes in many firms. Prior research has presented two conflicting perspectives on the role of such investors: (a) their frequent trading leads to pressure for short-term returns that fosters underinvestment; (b) their active trading fosters appropriate investments. We investigated the relationship between foreign ownership and strategic investments using dynamic panel data analysis of a sample of 146 Japanese manufacturing firms from 1991 to 1997. We found that foreign …
Threats To The Operational Use Of Situational Judgment Tests In The College Admission Process, Michael J. Cullen, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Threats To The Operational Use Of Situational Judgment Tests In The College Admission Process, Michael J. Cullen, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examined the coachability of two situational judgment tests, the College Student Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Situational Judgment Inventory (SJI), developed for consideration as selection instruments in the college admission process. Strategies for raising scores on each test were generated, and undergraduates were trained in the use of the strategies using a video-based training program. Results indicated that the CSQ was susceptible to coaching. In addition, the scoring format of the CSQ was found to be easily exploited, such that trainees could increase their scores by greater than 1 SD simply by avoiding extreme responses on that test. The …
Multilearner Based Recursive Supervised Training, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan, Laxmi R. Iyer
Multilearner Based Recursive Supervised Training, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan, Laxmi R. Iyer
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In supervised learning, most single solution neural networks such as constructive backpropagation give good results when used with some datasets but not with others. Others such as probabilistic neural networks (PNN) fit a curve to perfection but need to be manually tuned in the case of noisy data. Recursive percentage based hybrid pattern training (RPHP) overcomes this problem by recursively training subsets of the data, thereby using several neural networks. MultiLearner based recursive training (MLRT) is an extension of this approach, where a combination of existing and new learners are used and subsets are trained using the weak learner which …
Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai
Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in text mining and natural language understanding. Current approaches to NER (mostly based on supervised learning) perform well on domains similar to the training domain, but they tend to adapt poorly to slightly different domains. We present several strategies for exploiting the domain structure in the training data to learn a more robust named entity recognizer that can perform well on a new domain. First, we propose a simple yet effective way to automatically rank features based on their generalizabilities across domains. We then train a classifier with strong emphasis on the …
Batch Mode Active Learning And Its Applications To Medical Image Classification, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, Michael R. Lyu
Batch Mode Active Learning And Its Applications To Medical Image Classification, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The goal of active learning is to select the most informative examples for manual labeling. Most of the previous studies in active learning have focused on selecting a single unlabeled example in each iteration. This could be inefficient since the classification model has to be retrained for every labeled example. In this paper, we present a framework for "batch mode active learning" that applies the Fisher information matrix to select a number of informative examples simultaneously. The key computational challenge is how to efficiently identify the subset of unlabeled examples that can result in the largest reduction in the Fisher …
Learning Distance Metrics With Contextual Constraints For Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Wei Liu, Michael R. Lyu, Wei-Ying Ma
Learning Distance Metrics With Contextual Constraints For Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Wei Liu, Michael R. Lyu, Wei-Ying Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Relevant Component Analysis (RCA) has been proposed for learning distance metrics with contextual constraints for image retrieval. However, RCA has two important disadvantages. One is the lack of exploiting negative constraints which can also be informative, and the other is its incapability of capturing complex nonlinear relationships between data instances with the contextual information. In this paper, we propose two algorithms to overcome these two disadvantages, i.e., Discriminative Component Analysis (DCA) and Kernel DCA. Compared with other complicated methods for distance metric learning, our algorithms are rather simple to understand and very easy to solve. We evaluate the performance of …

A Construct-Driven Investigation Of Gender Differences In A Leadership-Role Assessment Center, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Marise Born
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examined gender differences in a large-scale assessment center for officer entry in the British Army. Subgroup differences were investigated for a sample of 1,857 candidates: 1,594 men and 263 women. A construct-driven approach was chosen (a) by examining gender differences at the construct level, (b) by formulating a priori hypotheses about which constructs would be susceptible to gender effects, and (c) by using both effect size statistics and latent mean analyses to investigate gender differences in assessment center ratings. Results showed that female candidates were rated notably higher on constructs reflecting an interpersonally oriented leadership style (i.e., oral …

Situated learning theory offers a radical critique of cognitivisttheories of learning, emphasizing the relational aspects of learning withincommunities of practice in contrast to the individualist assumptions ofconventional theories. However, although many researchers have embraced thetheoretical strength of situated learning theory, conceptual issues remainundeveloped in the literature. Roberts, for example, argues in this issue thatthe notion of ‘communities of practice’– a core concept in situated learningtheory – is itself problematic. To complement her discussion, this paperexplores the communities of practice concept from several perspectives.Firstly, we consider the perspective of the individual learner, and examine theprocesses which constitute ‘situated learning’. Secondly, we …
Loss Function Asymmetry And Forecast Optimality: Evidence From Individual Analysts' Forecasts, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan
Loss Function Asymmetry And Forecast Optimality: Evidence From Individual Analysts' Forecasts, Stanimir Markov, Min Yen Tan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine the optimality of quarterly earning forecasts issued by individual analysts. When we conduct Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Least Absolute Deviations (LAD) analyses, which assume loss function symmetry, we reject the null of forecast optimality at 5% significance level more than 5% of the time. Relaxing the symmetry assumption reduces the frequency of rejections below 5%. We demonstrate that the cross-sectional variation in the asymmetry parameter of the loss function is related to analyst employment. Overall, our evidence is consistent with the joint hypothesis of asymmetric loss and forecast optimality rather than the alternative of symmetric loss and …

On In-Network Synopsis Join Processing For Sensor Networks, Hai Yu, Ee Peng Lim, Jun Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The emergence of sensor networks enables applications that deploy sensors to collaboratively monitor environment and process data collected. In some scenarios, we are interested in using join queries to correlate data stored in different regions of a sensor network, where the data volume is large, making it prohibitive to transmit all data to a central server for joining. In this paper, we present an in-network synopsis join strategy for evaluating join queries in sensor networks with communication efficiency. In this strategy, we prune data that do not contribute to the join results in the early stage of the join processing, …
Large-Scale Text Categorization By Batch Mode Active Learning, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu
Large-Scale Text Categorization By Batch Mode Active Learning, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large-scale text categorization is an important research topic for Web data mining. One of the challenges in large-scale text categorization is how to reduce the human efforts in labeling text documents for building reliable classification models. In the past, there have been many studies on applying active learning methods to automatic text categorization, which try to select the most informative documents for labeling manually. Most of these studies focused on selecting a single unlabeled document in each iteration. As a result, the text categorization model has to be retrained after each labeled document is solicited. In this paper, we present …

Real-Time Non-Rigid Shape Recovery Via Active Appearance Models For Augmented Reality, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One main challenge in Augmented Reality (AR) applications is to keep track of video objects with their movement, orientation, size, and position accurately. This poses a challenging task to recover nonrigid shape and global pose in real-time AR applications. This paper proposes a novel two-stage scheme for online non-rigid shape recovery toward AR applications using Active Appearance Models (AAMs). First, we construct 3D shape models from AAMs offline, which do not involve processing of the 3D scan data. Based on the computed 3D shape models, we propose an efficient online algorithm to estimate both 3D pose and non-rigid shape parameters …

Predicting Adverse Impact And Mean Criterion Performance In Multistage Selection, Wifried De Corte, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors present an analytical method to assess the average criterion performance of the selected candidates as well as the adverse impact and the cost of general multistage selection decisions. The method extends previous work on the analytical estimation of multistage selection outcomes to the case in which the applicant pool is a mixture of applicant populations that differ in their average performance on the selection predictors. Next, the method was used to conduct 3 studies of important issues practitioners and researchers have with multistage selection processes. Finally, the authors indicate how the method can be integrated into a broader …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a novel frequent generalized pattern mining algorithm, called GP-Close, for mining generalized associations from RDF metadata. To solve the over-generalization problem encountered by existing methods, GP-Close employs the notion of emphgeneralization closure for systematic over-generalization reduction.
Gestalt-Based Feature Similarity Measure In Trademark Database, Hui Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hung-Khoon Tan
Gestalt-Based Feature Similarity Measure In Trademark Database, Hui Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Hung-Khoon Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivated by the studies in Gestalt principle, this paper describes a novel approach on the adaptive selection of visual features for trademark retrieval. We consider five kinds of visual saliencies: symmetry, continuity, proximity, parallelism and closure property. The first saliency is based on Zernike moments, while the others are modeled by geometric elements extracted illusively as a whole from a trademark. Given a query trademark, we adaptively determine the features appropriate for retrieval by investigating its visual saliencies. We show that in most cases, either geometric or symmetric features can give us good enough accuracy. To measure the similarity of …

Religion And Spaces Of Technology: Constructing And Contesting Nation, Transnation, And Place, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, I focus on one particular technological development that has come to influence religious practice in significant ways-religious broadcasting. Whereas computer-mediated communications now garner growing research attention, I have chosen to remember the influence of the older technology of broadcasting for its continued influence on myriad lives. In bringing this focus to bear on another major phenomenon, that of trans nationalism, I have come to understand how religious broadcasting does not contribute in a straightforward, linear fashion to perpetuating transnational identities and communities, but is instead implicated in the assertion of the national in the face of transnational …
Beyond The Hedonic Treadmill: Revising The Adaptation Theory Of Well-Being, Ed Diener, Richard E. Lucas, Christie N. Scollon
Beyond The Hedonic Treadmill: Revising The Adaptation Theory Of Well-Being, Ed Diener, Richard E. Lucas, Christie N. Scollon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
According to the hedonic treadmill model, good and bad events temporarily affect happiness, but people quickly adapt back to hedonic neutrality. The theory, which has gained widespread acceptance in recent years, implies that individual and societal efforts to increase happiness are doomed to failure. The recent empirical work outlined here indicates that 5 important revisions to the treadmill model are needed. First, individuals' set points are not hedonically neutral. Second, people have different set points, which are partly dependent on their temperaments. Third, a single person may have multiple happiness set points: Different components of well-being such as pleasant emotions, …

External Debt, Adjustment, And Growth, Roberto S. Mariano, Delano Villanueva
Research Collection School Of Economics
High ratios of external debt to GDP in selected Asian countries have contributed to the initiation, propagation, and severity of the financial and economic crises in recent years, reflecting runaway fiscal deficits and excessive foreign borrowing by the private sector. More importantly, the servicing of large debt stocks has diverted scarce resources from investment and long-term growth.
Analysing Survey Data With Incomplete Responses By Using A Method Based On Empirical Likelihood, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin
Analysing Survey Data With Incomplete Responses By Using A Method Based On Empirical Likelihood, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin
Research Collection School Of Economics
In many surveys, missing response is a common problem. As an example, Zahner, Jacobs, Freeman and Trainor analysed data from a study of child psychopathology in the State of Connecticut, USA. In that study, the response variable, psychopathology, was inferred from questions that were addressed to teachers of the children and was subject to a high level of missingness. However, the missing responses were supplemented by surrogate information that was provided by the parents and/or the primary care providers of the children. In such a situation, it is conceivable that the supplemental information can be used to recover some of …

Profile Likelihood Estimation Of Partially Linear Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider consistent estimation of partially linear panel data models with fixed effects. We propose profile-likelihood-based estimators for both the parametric and nonparametric components in the models and establish convergence rates and asymptotic normality for both estimators.
Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Query-Dependent Clip Retrieval And Video Summarization, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo
Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Query-Dependent Clip Retrieval And Video Summarization, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes a new approach and algorithm for the similarity measure of video clips. The similarity is mainly based on two bipartite graph matching algorithms: maximum matching (MM) and optimal matching (OM). MM is able to rapidly filter irrelevant video clips, while OM is capable of ranking the similarity of clips according to visual and granularity factors. We apply the similarity measure for two tasks: retrieval and summarization. In video retrieval, a hierarchical retrieval framework is constructed based on MM and OM. The validity of the framework is theoretically proved and empirically verified on a video database of 21 …

Efficient Querying And Resource Management Using Distributed Presence Information In Converged Networks, Dipanjan Chakraborty, Koustuv Dasgupta, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Next-generation converged networks shall deliver many innovative services over the standardized SIPbased IMS signaling infrastructure. Several such services exploit the joint presence information of a consumer, i.e. SIP entity requesting a service, and a vendor, i.e. SIP resource providing a service. Presence information is a collection of contextual attributes (e.g. location, availability, reputation), some of which change dynamically. Moreover, this collective presence information is distributed across multiple presence servers. While performing query matching based on joint presence information, a server usually routes each query to a locally available resource. However, skews in the spatio-temporal distribution of queries and resources may …

Modeling Online Art Auction Dynamics Using Functional Data Analysis, Karempudi Srinivas Reddy, Mayukh Dass
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this paper, we examine the price dynamics of on-line art auctions of modern Indian art using functional data analysis. The purpose here is not just to understand what determines the final prices of art objects, but also the price movement during the entire auction. We identify several factors, such as artist characteristics (established or emerging artist; prior sales history), art characteristics (size; painting medium—canvas or paper), competition characteristics (current number of bidders; current number of bids) and auction design characteristics (opening bid; position of the lot in the auction), that explain the dynamics of price movement in an on-line …
