On The Magnet Effect Of Foreign Direct Investment, Pao Li Chang, Chia-Hui Lu Sep 2006

On The Magnet Effect Of Foreign Direct Investment, Pao Li Chang, Chia-Hui Lu

Research Collection School Of Economics

We extend Antras and Helpman (2004) on firm heterogeneity and organizational choice to a dynamic setting with FDI uncertainty, in which the probability of investment failure decreases with the host country's infrastructure level and increases with the technological complexity facing each firm. Moreover, it decreases over time as the accumulated mass of firms succeeding in FDI increases. We show that a minimum level of infrastructure is required to trigger a first wave of industrial migration. We then formalize the often noted "magnet effect" of FDI - the first wave of industrial migration generates positive externality (information spillover) for subsequent investors, …

Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models: Bayesian Estimation And Model Comparison, Jun Yu, Renate Meyer Sep 2006

Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models: Bayesian Estimation And Model Comparison, Jun Yu, Renate Meyer

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we show that fully likelihood-based estimation and comparison of multivariate stochastic volatility (SV) models can be easily performed via a freely available Bayesian software called WinBUGS. Moreover, we introduce to the literature several new specifications that are natural extensions to certain existing models, one of which allows for time-varying correlation coefficients. Ideas are illustrated by fitting, to a bivariate time series data of weekly exchange rates, nine multivariate SV models, including the specifications with Granger causality in volatility, time-varying correlations, heavy-tailed error distributions, additive factor structure, and multiplicative factor structure. Empirical results suggest that the best specifications …

Wireless Indoor Positioning System With Enhanced Nearest Neighbors In Signal Space Algorithm, Quang Tran, Juki Wirawan Tantra, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Kin-Choong Yow, Dongyu Qiu Sep 2006

Wireless Indoor Positioning System With Enhanced Nearest Neighbors In Signal Space Algorithm, Quang Tran, Juki Wirawan Tantra, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Kin-Choong Yow, Dongyu Qiu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development and wide deployment of wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), WLAN-based positioning system employing signal-strength-based technique has become an attractive solution for location estimation in indoor environment. In recent years, a number of such systems has been presented, and most of the systems use the common Nearest Neighbor in Signal Space (NNSS) algorithm. In this paper, we propose an enhancement to the NNSS algorithm. We analyze the enhancement to show its effectiveness. The performance of the enhanced NNSS algorithm is evaluated with different values of the parameters. Based on the performance evaluation and analysis, we recommend some …

Verbal And Nonverbal Impression Management Tactics In Behavior Description And Situational Interviews, Helga Peeters, Filip Lievens Sep 2006

Verbal And Nonverbal Impression Management Tactics In Behavior Description And Situational Interviews, Helga Peeters, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigated how structured interview formats, instructions to convey favorable impressions, and applicants' individual differences influenced the use and effectiveness of verbal and nonverbal impression management (IM). Results from 190 people who were screened for a training program demonstrated that interview format affected the kind of tactics used, which in turn positively influenced interviewer evaluations. Behavior description interviews triggered self-focused (and defensive) tactics, whereas situational interviews triggered other-focused tactics. Instructions to convey a desirable impression also enhanced the use of specific tactics (self-focused and other-focused verbal IM tactics) and moderated the effects of individual differences on IM use. IM …

Which Daily Price Is Less Noisy?, Christopher Ting Sep 2006

Which Daily Price Is Less Noisy?, Christopher Ting

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The daily efficient price is the price that would prevail if the market were frictionless. I show that volume-weighted average price (VWAP) provides a less noisy estimate for the unobservable efficient price as compared to the closing price. The variance of daily returns computed with VWAPs is smaller than that computed with closing prices. The difference between these two realized variances is economically significant. The volatility of log closing price change tends to understate the beta risk and Sharpe ratio. A higher noise level in the closing price leads to derivative prices that favor option and volatility-related swap writers.

Government Procurement: A View From Asia, Locknie Hsu Sep 2006

Government Procurement: A View From Asia, Locknie Hsu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is no single approach to government procurement regulation among Asian countries. While some are signatories to the WTO's Government Procurement Agreement (GPA), others are not. Some have deliberate policies which confer preferences on domestic suppliers of goods and services. Even so, some have embarked on changing their GP regimes independently of WTO requirements. Yet others appear to be prepared to make changes in tandem with the negotiation of bilateral or regional free trade agreements. This article examines government procurement from these varied perspectives of Asian countries.

Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Sep 2006

Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Private data matching between the data sets of two potentially distrusted parties has a wide range of applications. However, existing solutions have substantial weaknesses and do not meet the needs of many practical application scenarios. In particular, practical private data matching applications often require discouraging the matching parties from spoofing their private inputs. In this paper, we address this challenge by forcing the matching parties to "escrow" the data they use for matching to an auditorial agent, and in the "after-the-fact" period, they undertake the liability to attest the genuineness of the escrowed data.

Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu Sep 2006

Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Disclosure analysis in two-way contingency tables is important in categorical data analysis. The disclosure analysis concerns whether a data snooper can infer any protected cell values, which contain privacy sensitive information, from available marginal totals (i.e., row sums and column sums) in a two-way contingency table. Previous research has been targeted on this problem from various perspectives. However, there is a lack of systematic definitions on the disclosure of cell values. Also, no previous study has been focused on the distribution of the cells that are subject to various types of disclosure. In this paper, we define four types of …

Continuous Nearest Neighbor Monitoring In Road Networks, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Man Lung Yiu, Dimitris Papadias, Nikos Mamoulis Sep 2006

Continuous Nearest Neighbor Monitoring In Road Networks, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Man Lung Yiu, Dimitris Papadias, Nikos Mamoulis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research has focused on continuous monitoring of nearest neighbors (NN) in highly dynamic scenarios, where the queries and the data objects move frequently and arbitrarily. All existing methods, however, assume the Euclidean distance metric. In this paper we study k-NN monitoring in road networks, where the distance between a query and a data object is determined by the length of the shortest path connecting them. We propose two methods that can handle arbitrary object and query moving patterns, as well as °uctuations of edge weights. The ¯rst one maintains the query results by processing only updates that may invalidate …

Rights Protection For Data Cubes, Jie Guo, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Kefei Chen Sep 2006

Rights Protection For Data Cubes, Jie Guo, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Kefei Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a rights protection scheme for data cubes. The scheme embeds ownership information by modifying a set of selected cell values. The embedded message will not affect the usefulness of data cubes in the sense that the sum queries at any aggregation level are not affected. At the same time, the errors introduced to individual cell values are under control. The embedded message can be detected with a high probability even in the presence of typical data cube attacks. The proposed scheme can thus be used for protecting data cubes from piracy in an open, distributed environment.

Minimum Latency Broadcasting In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Junaid Qadir, Archan Misra, Chun Tung Chou Sep 2006

Minimum Latency Broadcasting In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Junaid Qadir, Archan Misra, Chun Tung Chou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of minimizing the worst-case broadcast delay in multi-radio multi-channel multi-rate (MR2-MC) wireless mesh networks (WMN). The problem of 'efficient' broadcast in such networks is especially challenging due to the numerous interrelated decisions that have to be made. The multi-rate transmission capability of WMN nodes, interference between wireless transmissions, and the hardness of optimal channel assignment adds complexity to our considered problem. We present four heuristic algorithms to solve the minimum latency broadcast problem for such settings and show that the 'best' performing algorithms usually adapt themselves to the available radio interfaces and channels. We also study …

Relationships, Layoffs, And Organizational Resilience: Airline Industry Responses To September 11, Jody H. Gittell, Kim Cameron, Sandy Lim, Victor Rivas Sep 2006

Relationships, Layoffs, And Organizational Resilience: Airline Industry Responses To September 11, Jody H. Gittell, Kim Cameron, Sandy Lim, Victor Rivas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, affected the U.S. airline industry more than almost any other industry. Certain airlines emerged successful and demonstrated remarkable resilience while others languished. This investigation identifies reasons why some airline companies recovered successfully after the attacks while others struggled. Evidence is provided that layoffs after the crisis, although intended to foster recovery, instead inhibited recovery throughout the 4 years after the crisis. But, layoffs after the crisis were strongly correlated with lack of financial reserves and lack of a viable business model prior to the crisis. Digging deeper, the authors find that having a …

Is Stock Price Rounded For Economic Reasons In The Chinese Market, Yan He, Chunchi Wu Sep 2006

Is Stock Price Rounded For Economic Reasons In The Chinese Market, Yan He, Chunchi Wu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates whether trading and quoting prices are rounded for both economic and cultural reasons on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges in China. We find that the close, bid, and ask prices of domestic shares are rounded to the nearest 10s and 5s for economic reasons, and the last decimal point of prices clusters on 8 for cultural reasons. The cross-sectional variation in 10-cent and 5-cent rounding can be well explained by price and inverse of square root of trading volume, whereas the clustering on 8 can hardly be ascribed to economic variables. The cross-sectional variation in execution …

Bucket Brigades On In-Tree Assembly Networks, John J. Bartholdi, Iii, Donald D. Eisenstein, Yun Fong Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In a of subassembly lines, balance becomes more difficult to achieve as it requires that all subassembly lines be synchronized to produce at the same rate. We show how to adapt the ‘‘bucket brigade’’ protocol of work-sharing so that balance emerges spontaneously.

Video-Based Versus Written Situational Judgment Tests: A Comparison In Terms Of Predictive Validity, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett Sep 2006

Video-Based Versus Written Situational Judgment Tests: A Comparison In Terms Of Predictive Validity, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, the authors examined whether video-based situational judgment tests (SJTs) have higher predictive validity than written SJTs (keeping verbal content constant). The samples consisted of 1, 159 students who completed a video-based version of an SIT and 1,750 students who completed the same SIT in a written format. The study was conducted in a high stakes testing context. The video-based version of an interpersonally oriented SJT had a lower correlation with cognitive ability than did the written version. It also had higher predictive and incremental validity for predicting interpersonally oriented criteria than did the written version. In this …

The Billion-Dollar Body Parts Industry: Medical Research Alongside Greed And Corruption, Knowledge@Smu Aug 2006

The Billion-Dollar Body Parts Industry: Medical Research Alongside Greed And Corruption, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Body parts are big business in the United States. Tissue, organs, tendons, bones, joints, limbs, hands, feet, torsos, and heads culled from the dead are the cornerstones of the lucrative and important business of advancing scientific knowledge and improving medical technique. Few people, however, think to ask where the material that sustains this enormous industry comes from. Journalist Annie Cheney is a timely exception. In Body Brokers: Inside America's Underground Trade in Human Remains (Broadway), Cheney chronicles her quest to find out how human remains are procured, processed, marketed, and used. It's a complicated, detailed and disturbing tale.

The Importance Of Issues Management In International Mergers And Acquisitions, Mark Chong Aug 2006

The Importance Of Issues Management In International Mergers And Acquisitions, Mark Chong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Issues management is the strategic use of issues analysis and strategic responses to help organizations make adaptations needed to achieve harmony and foster mutual interests within the communities in which they operate (Heath, 1997, p. 3). It seeks to build, maintain and repair relationships with an organizationÆs stakeholders by keeping surveillance for threats and opportunities in the environment that can affect success in achieving organizational mission and goals (Heath, 2002). Accordingly, organizations modify corporate policy, shape legislation or influence public opinion to synchronize themselves with the prevailing or emerging climate of public opinion and sensitivity

Spectral Density Estimation And Robust Hypothesis Testing Using Steep Origin Kernels Without Truncation, Peter C.B Philips, Yixiao Sun, Sainan Jin Aug 2006

Spectral Density Estimation And Robust Hypothesis Testing Using Steep Origin Kernels Without Truncation, Peter C.B Philips, Yixiao Sun, Sainan Jin

Research Collection School Of Economics

A new class of kernels for long-run variance and spectral density estimation is developed by exponentiating traditional quadratic kernels. Depending on whether the exponent parameter is allowed to grow with the sample size, we establish different asymptotic approximations to the sampling distribution of the proposed estimators. When the exponent is passed to infinity with the sample size, the new estimator is consistent and shown to be asymptotically normal. When the exponent is fixed, the new estimator is inconsistent and has a nonstandard limiting distribution. It is shown via Monte Carlo experiments that, when the chosen exponent is small in practical …

The Association Between Audit Quality And Abnormal Audit Fees, Jong-Hag Choi, Jeong-Bon Kim, Yoonseok Zang Aug 2006

The Association Between Audit Quality And Abnormal Audit Fees, Jong-Hag Choi, Jeong-Bon Kim, Yoonseok Zang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using a sample of 9,820 firm-year observations over the 2000-2003 period, this paper examines whether, and how, audit quality proxied by unsigned discretionary accruals is associated with abnormal audit fees, i.e., actual audit fees in excess of expected, normal audit fees. The results of various regressions reveal that the association between the two is insignificant for the full sample, significantly positive for the subsample of clients with positive abnormal fees, and insignificantly negative for the subsample of clients with negative abnormal fees. The above results suggest that auditors’ incentives to compromise audit quality differ systematically for more profitable clients (with …

Evidence On The Relationship Between Takaful Insurance And Fundamental Perception Of Islamic Principles, Ramin Cooper Maysami, John Joseph Williams Aug 2006

Evidence On The Relationship Between Takaful Insurance And Fundamental Perception Of Islamic Principles, Ramin Cooper Maysami, John Joseph Williams

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

One of the complexities overarching the concept of Islamic insurance is anchored in the belief system pertaining to fundamental Islamic Law, while another is embedded in the role of profit within the takaful contract. The purpose of this study is to empirically explore the association between the awareness of the existence of Islamic insurance (takaful) and religious perceptions of this financial service.

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Aug 2006

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In content-based image retrieval (CBIR), relevant images are identified based on their similarities to query images. Most CBIR algorithms are hindered by the semantic gap between the low-level image features used for computing image similarity and the high-level semantic concepts conveyed in images. One way to reduce the semantic gap is to utilize the log data of users' feedback that has been collected by CBIR systems in history, which is also called “collaborative image retrieval.” In this paper, we present a novel metric learning approach, named “regularized metric learning,” for collaborative image retrieval, which learns a distance metric by exploring …

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: The Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau Aug 2006

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: The Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

U-commerce represents “anytime, anywhere” commerce, which is believed to be the ultimate form of commerce. Ucommerce can provide a high level of personalization, which can bring additional benefits and values to customers. However, despite these promises and potential benefits, customers’ privacy is a major concern and obstacle to the adoption of ucommerce. As customers’ intention to adopt u-commerce is based on the aggregate effect of perceived benefits and risk exposure (e.g., privacy concerns), this research examines how personalization and context can impact on customers’ perceived benefits and privacy concerns, and how this aggregated effect in turn affects u-commerce adoption intention. …

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple Aug 2006

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Using a post-positivist framework adapted from diffusion theory, we critically interpret the circulation, mutation and adaptation …

The Sociality Of Cultural Industries: Hong Kong's Cultural Policy And Film Industry, Lily Kong Aug 2006

The Sociality Of Cultural Industries: Hong Kong's Cultural Policy And Film Industry, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this article, I explore the sociality of cultural industries by analyzing the film industry in Hong Kong. In particular, the social networks and relationships at multiple scales – across national boundaries, within local settings and on production sets – are examined, revealing their critical role in contributing to the health of the film industry. The risks faced at various steps of the production, marketing and distribution process are ameliorated by trust relations, built up through time between social actors in spontaneous ways. While Hong Kong cultural policy in part seeks to create the social and spatial contexts within which …

Richard Rorty And Moral Progress In Global Relations, Eduard Jordaan Aug 2006

Richard Rorty And Moral Progress In Global Relations, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Richard Rorty's navigation of the pitfalls of the cosmopolitan-communitarian debate, concern with human suffering, recognition of the contingency of communal identities and relationships, and his endorsement of liberal societies, by definition inclusive and always in search of a greater justice, make it appear as though his thought can guide us towards greater concern for the world's poor. However, this article questions the progressive potential of Rorty's thought. Obstacles to such (global) moral progress include Rorty's unquestioned statism and his focus on internal outsiders who are suffering and/or oppressed, instead of external outsiders beyond national borders; his insistence on a public-private …

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan Aug 2006

History, Identity, And Security: Producing And Consuming Nationalism In China, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Chinese nationalism has ignited much debate among academics and the general public in both China and the West. Rather than search for the true core of Chinese nationalism, this essay will examine the curious custom of National Humiliation Day as an oblique entry into the politics of identity. The nation is not simply a question of people or territory, the author contends, but of time: the national time scripted by events such as National Humiliation Day. By comparing the differing practices of the holiday as it was celebrated in the early twentieth century and is observed in the early twenty-first …
