Fomo And The Ico: The Changing Salience Of Quality Signals, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Sandzhar Tazhibaev, Johannes Gartner
Fomo And The Ico: The Changing Salience Of Quality Signals, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Sandzhar Tazhibaev, Johannes Gartner
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The manuscript investigates whether the individual personality trait, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)—typically considered negative—influences the willingness of individuals to contribute to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), a phenomenon that emerged after the blockchain revolution. We conducted both qualitative and quantitative work in this space and present the results of an international survey, including a conjoint experiment. Theoretically, we anchor our study in signaling theory and propose that signal valence (the positive or negative interpretation of a signal) can diverge from signal intent. Specifically, we find that candidate ICO funders with strong FOMO behave predictably irrationally. They are more likely to …

Trust Building Across And Within Cultures: A Study Of Guinea, West Africa, And China, Hwee Hoon Tan, Xiushun Sun, Yue Wang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Adopting a cross-cultural perspective, this study provides insights into how Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs) with a focus on Confucian values, builds trust and contributes to the globalization process in African settings, specifically Guinea. Using a mixed-methods methodology, we explore the dynamics of trust relationships within and across cultures. In Study 1, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 Chinese supervisors, 20 Guinean supervisors and 19 Guinean workers. We found Chinese expatriates to emphasize ability and integrity in trust building while Guinean workers care more about benevolence. Drawing on the insights of study 1, we proposed a model of interpersonal trust within …

Universal Return And Factor Timing, Poh Ling Neo, Chyng Wen Tee, Jeroen Kerkhof
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors highlight the shortcomings of commonly used performance graphs in assessing and comparing investment returns. This paper's main conceptual contribution is the introduction of Universal Return (UR) - a visual method to evaluate and rank investment strategies that challenges the traditional focus on raw performance statistics. The authors argue that the ranking of investment performance when viewed from a pool of investors over different entry time is more important than its overall absolute returns, as it better aligns investment analysis with the needs of investors, who are primarily concerned with identifying currently successful strategies or managers rather than dwelling …

Assessing Divergence And Convergence In The Design Process: Results From Two Experiments, Arlindo Silva, Tamas Makany, Matt Chiu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
It is often assumed that the design process comprises divergent and convergent thinking cycles. Although many authors studied the design process in depth, a quantification of divergence and convergence is yet to be established. This paper attempts to quantify divergence and convergence in the design process for teams of design students. Student submissions from two independent design-related courses from two Universities are analysed for divergent and convergent thinking. Such an approach uses Natural Language Processing to harvest existing student submissions in written documents and converts them into a 'real-time' dashboard for feedback that can be used in multiple ways: searching …
Taxing Crypto-Asset Transactions: Foundations For A Globally Coordinated Approach, Vincent Ooi
Taxing Crypto-Asset Transactions: Foundations For A Globally Coordinated Approach, Vincent Ooi
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
With the total market capitalisation of crypto-assets amounting to trillions of US dollars, it isclear that crypto taxation needs to be taken seriously by both tax administrations and taxpayers.Over the past few years, numerous tax administrations around the world have devoted resourcesto crypto taxation, as evidenced by the substantial amount of guidance that has been madeavailable to taxpayers. International organisations such as the Organisation for EconomicCo-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations have also released publicationson crypto taxation. Despite all these domestic and international efforts to provide guidance oncrypto taxation, there remains considerable uncertainty as to the tax treatment …
Is The Hague Academy Of International Law A European Institution?, Pasha L. Hsieh
Is The Hague Academy Of International Law A European Institution?, Pasha L. Hsieh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This essay reviews the centenary development of the Hague Academy of International Law with particular emphasis on its research and teaching related to regional approaches to international law. Charles Henry Alexandrowicz's lectures at the Hague Academy in the 1960s contended that the European-developed recognition system narrowed the universality of international law to Eurocentric dimensions and marginalised international legal developments in Asia. Drawing on Alexandrowicz's main claim, the essay argues that the rise of Asia has become a geopolitical reality but has yet to be recognised in international legal scholarship. First, Alexandrowicz's theoretical analysis should be understood through both international law …
Regulatory Approaches To Consumer Protection In The Financial Sector And Beyond: Toward A Smart Disclosure Regime?, Nydia Remolina Leon, Yvonne Ai-Chi Loh, David R. Hardoon
Regulatory Approaches To Consumer Protection In The Financial Sector And Beyond: Toward A Smart Disclosure Regime?, Nydia Remolina Leon, Yvonne Ai-Chi Loh, David R. Hardoon
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Traditionally, consumer and data protection policies evolved from issues of consent and information disclosure. The purpose of these regulatory approaches is the protection of consumers by reducing some contracting failures, such as asymmetries of information and a lower bargaining power, especially in transactions involving complex issues such as financial products and sensitive personal data. In the past, regulators have responded to privacy and consumer protection by adopting what this paper refers to as an “imperfectly informed regime”, in which consumers do not receive full information about the risks associated with their decisions, even if they are still protected through a …
The Model Of Norm-Regulated Responsibility For Proenvironmental Behavior In The Context Of Littering Prevention, Pengya Ai, Sonny Rosenthal
The Model Of Norm-Regulated Responsibility For Proenvironmental Behavior In The Context Of Littering Prevention, Pengya Ai, Sonny Rosenthal
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Previous research suggests that descriptive norms positively influence proenvironmental behavior, including littering prevention. However, in some behavioral contexts, a weak descriptive norm may increase individuals’ feelings of responsibility by signaling a need for action. We examined this effect in the context of litter prevention by conducting structural equation modeling of survey data from 1400 Singapore residents. The results showed that descriptive norms negatively predicted ascription of responsibility and were negatively related to littering prevention behavior via ascription of responsibility and personal norms. It also showed that strong injunctive norms can reduce the inhibitory effect of descriptive norms on ascription of …
Spatial Trajectories, Theories, And Topoi In The Study Of Religion And Film, Teng-Kuan Ng
Spatial Trajectories, Theories, And Topoi In The Study Of Religion And Film, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This chapter explores the correlations between religion and film studies and the geographies of religion. Using perspectives from the latter to foreground overlooked aspects of the former, I argue that investigations of the religious problematic via film are productively enriched when refocused on the question: what kind of space does religious cinema constitute? Rather than offering a single answer, I highlight the various phenomenological, ritual, and ethical spaces that cinema—comprising production, text, and reception—can construct. In the first section, I briefly trace the “spatial turns” that religion and film scholarship has taken since its inception, observing the field’s evolving geographical …

Here, There, And Elsewhere: Ethnicity, Identity, And Global Orientation At An Indian International School In Singapore, Emma Alexandra Grimley, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
International schools are somewhat ‘place-less’ in that their denationalised educational systems and nationally diverse student bodies are typically removed from the physical context in which each school is located. However, this placeless internationalism is complicated by international schools that also affiliate themselves with a national system or enrol a significant number of students who aspire to remain in the ‘host’ country. This paper develops the example of the Global Indian International School in Singapore to illustrate how the feeling of place is impacted by its dual orientations as both ‘Global’ and ‘Indian.’ The school attempts to (re)create an Indian schooling …
The Scale Question As An Urban Question: The Making Of Homo Urbanicus Amid State Entrepreneurialism, Yong Zhang
The Scale Question As An Urban Question: The Making Of Homo Urbanicus Amid State Entrepreneurialism, Yong Zhang
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This research bridges two influential strands of literature on urban China—state entrepreneurialism and homo urbanicus (城市人). By revisiting how China’s post-reform urban transformation has unfolded and connecting it to current development strategies, this research provides a fresh perspective on the country’s urbanization processes and their implications for future governance. The analysis proposes an alternative periodization of three phases: anti-migration urbanism, anti-settlement urbanism, and anti-civitas urbanism. Beyond understanding urbanization as a crisis-driven, state-rescaling phenomenon pivoting around the blending of state and market forces, this research repositions the concept of homo urbanicus, or the urban citizen, as central to understanding the urban …

Uncovering Electric Vehicle Ownership Disparities Using K-Means Clustering Analysis: A Case Study Of Austin, Texas, Seung Jun Choi, Junfeng Jiao
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Transportation electrification is promoted for its environmental and energy efficiency benefits. However, recent studies examining electric vehicle (EV) adoption have revealed complex patterns influenced by race and income disparities. These studies, primarily based on surveys, often overlook regional ownership variations and built environment measures linked to urban form. Our study addresses this gap by analyzing actual EV registration data with spatial details using hot spot and K-means clustering analyses. The analysis results revealed a pronounced East–West divide in EV adoption. In West Austin, clusters indicate a higher number of EVs, greater energy consumption, and residents who are predominantly White, with …

Dc-Instruct : An Effective Framework For Generative Multi-Intent Spoken Language Understanding, Bowen Xing, Lizi Liao, Minlie Huang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the realm of multi-intent spoken language understanding, recent advancements have leveraged the potential of prompt learning frameworks. However, critical gaps exist in these frameworks: the lack of explicit modeling of dual-task dependencies and the oversight of task-specific semantic differences among utterances. To address these shortcomings, we propose DC-Instruct, a novel generative framework based on Dual-task Inter-dependent Instructions (DII) and Supervised Contrastive Instructions (SCI). Specifically, DII guides large language models (LLMs) to generate labels for one task based on the other task’s labels, thereby explicitly capturing dual-task inter-dependencies. Moreover, SCI leverages utterance semantics differences by guiding LLMs to determine whether …

Revisiting Conversation Discourse For Dialogue Disentanglement, Bobo Li, Hao Fei, Fei Li, Shengqiong Wu, Lizi Liao, Yinwei Wei, Tat-Seng Chua, Donghong Ji
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Dialogue disentanglement aims to detach the chronologically ordered utterances into several independent sessions. Conversation utterances are essentially organized and described by the underlying discourse, and thus dialogue disentanglement requires the full understanding and harnessing of the intrinsic discourse attribute. In this article, we propose enhancing dialogue disentanglement by taking full advantage of the dialogue discourse characteristics. First of all, in feature encoding stage, we construct the heterogeneous graph representations to model the various dialogue-specific discourse structural features, including the static speaker-role structures (i.e., speaker-utterance and speaker-mentioning structure) and the dynamic contextual structures (i.e., the utterance-distance and partial-replying structure). We then …

Improving Conversational Recommender System Via Contextual And Time-Aware Modeling With Less Domain-Specific Knowledge, Lingzhi Wang, Shafiq Joty, Wei Gao, Xingshan Zeng, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conversational Recommender Systems (CRS) has become an emerging research topic seeking to perform recommendations through interactive conversations, which generally consist of generation and recommendation modules. Prior work on CRS tends to incorporate more external and domain-specific knowledge like item reviews to enhance performance. Despite the fact that the collection and annotation of the external domain-specific information needs much human effort and degenerates the generalizability, too much extra knowledge introduces more difficulty to balance among them. Therefore, we propose to fully discover and extract the internal knowledge from the context. We capture both entity-level and contextual-level representations to jointly model user …

Relation extraction (RE) involves identifying the relations between entities from underlying content. RE serves as the foundation for many natural language processing (NLP) and information retrieval applications, such as knowledge graph completion and question answering. In recent years, deep neural networks have dominated the field of RE and made noticeable progress. Subsequently, the large pre-trained language models (PLMs) have taken the state-of-the-art RE to a new level. This survey provides a comprehensive review of existing deep learning techniques for RE. First, we introduce RE resources, including datasets and evaluation metrics. Second, we propose a new taxonomy to categorize existing works …

Politically Connected Firms And The Cash Flow Sensitivity Of Cash: International Evidence, Yuanto Kusnadi
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper examines the role of political connections on the cash flow sensitivity of cash using a sample of international firms. The finding reveals that the cash flow sensitivity of cash is lower for politically connected firms than their non-connected counterparts, which is supportive of the precautionary motive of cash holdings. Further analyses reveal that the result is driven by political connections that are made through the directors of the firms and with members of parliament, as well as by differences in country-level institutional infrastructure. Overall, the empirical results corroborate that of previous studies on the relevance of the precautionary …

The study provides large-scale descriptive evidence on the timing and nature of corporate financial tweeting. Using an unsupervised machine learning approach to analyze 24 million tweets posted by S&P 1500 firms from 2012 to 2020, we find that firms are more likely to tweet financial information around significantly negative or positive news events, such as earnings announcements and the filing of financial statements. This convex U-shaped relation between the likelihood of posting financial tweets and the materiality of accounting events becomes stronger over time. Whereas research based on early samples concludes that firms are less likely to disseminate financial information …

We examine how public enforcement and private enforcement interact to contain self-dealing activities in emerging markets. Using data from China, we find that firms receiving comment letters concerning related party transactions (RPTs) from stock exchanges significantly reduce their RPTs in subsequent years. We further find that (1) the subsequent reduction in RPTs is more pronounced when independent directors have higher career or reputation concerns and (2) independent directors are more likely to dissent or resign if their firms do not significantly reduce RPTs after receiving RPT comment letters, especially if they have high reputation concerns. Our study sheds light on …

The accountancy profession faces one of its most challenging periods as several factors converge to disrupt it. Technological advancements, the expanding role of accountants, declining student interest in accountancy, and increasing expectations for uniquely human capital all exert pressure on the profession to reinvent itself or face marginalisation. This study, funded by the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), examines trends in the accountancy profession alongside accountancy education in Singapore. Its goal is to formulate a fit-for-purpose accountancy education for the new economy.
Politicians’ Green Incentives And External Auditing, Ole-Kristian Hope, Heng Yue, Qinlin Zhong
Politicians’ Green Incentives And External Auditing, Ole-Kristian Hope, Heng Yue, Qinlin Zhong
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This paper examines whether and how politicians’ green incentives affect external auditing. Specifically, we investigate the effects of China’s Green Audit of Outgoing Officials (GAOO) policy, which directly links environmental performance to public officials’ promotions. Employing a DID approach, we observe a significant reduction in audit fees for high-polluting firms after the implementation of GAOO. The decrease is stronger among firms located in regions with departing public officials. We identify two channels driving this trend: (1) Auditors rely on public information generated from intensified governmental efforts, thereby economizing on their efforts (i.e., a substitution effect); (2) High-polluting firms improve their …

Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly impacted numerous domains, including Software Engineering (SE). Many recent publications have explored LLMs applied to various SE tasks. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the application, effects, and possible limitations of LLMs on SE is still in its early stages. To bridge this gap, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on LLM4SE, with a particular focus on understanding how LLMs can be exploited to optimize processes and outcomes. We selected and analyzed 395 research articles from January 2017 to January 2024 to answer four key Research Questions (RQs). In RQ1, we categorize different LLMs …

Balancing Visual Context Understanding In Dialogue For Image Retrieval, Zhaohui Wei, Lizi Liao, Xiaoyu Du, Xinguang Xiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the realm of dialogue-to-image retrieval, the primary challenge is to fetch images from a pre-compiled database that accurately reflect the intent embedded within the dialogue history. Existing methods often overemphasize inter-modal alignment, neglecting the nuanced nature of conversational context. Dialogue histories are frequently cluttered with redundant information and often lack direct image descriptions, leading to a substantial disconnect between conversational content and visual representation. This study introduces VCU, a novel framework designed to enhance the comprehension of dialogue history and improve cross-modal matching for image retrieval. VCU leverages large language models (LLMs) to perform a two-step extraction process. It …

Defending Large Language Models Against Jailbreak Attacks Via Layer-Specific Editing, Wei Zhao, Zhe Li, Yige Li, Jun Sun, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being adopted in a wide range of realworld applications. Despite their impressive performance, recent studies have shown that LLMs are vulnerable to deliberately crafted adversarial prompts even when aligned via Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback or supervised fine-tuning. While existing defense methods focus on either detecting harmful prompts or reducing the likelihood of harmful responses through various means, defending LLMs against jailbreak attacks based on the inner mechanisms of LLMs remains largely unexplored. In this work, we investigate how LLMs respond to harmful prompts and propose a novel defense method termed Layer-specific Editing (LED) …

Eyetraes : Fine-Grained, Low-Latency Eye Tracking Via Adaptive Event Slicing, Argha Sen, Panahetipola Mudiyanselage Nuwan Bandara, Ila Gokarn, Thivya Kandappu, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Eye-tracking technology has gained significant attention in recent years due to its wide range of applications in humancomputer interaction, virtual and augmented reality, and wearable health. Traditional RGB camera-based eye-tracking systems often struggle with poor temporal resolution and computational constraints, limiting their effectiveness in capturing rapid eye movements. To address these limitations, we propose EyeTrAES, a novel approach using neuromorphic event cameras for high-fidelity tracking of natural pupillary movement that shows significant kinematic variance. One of EyeTrAES’s highlights is the use of a novel adaptive windowing/slicing algorithm that ensures just the right amount of descriptive asynchronous event data accumulation within …

Strength Lies In Differences! Improving Strategy Planning For Non-Collaborative Dialogues Via Diversified User Simulation, Tong Zhang, Chen Huang, Yang Deng, Hongru Liang, Jia Liu, Zujie Wen, Wenqiang Lei, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate non-collaborative dialogue agents, which are expected to engage in strategic conversations with diverse users, for securing a mutual agreement that leans favorably towards the system’s objectives. This poses two main challenges for existing dialogue agents: 1) The inability to integrate user-specific characteristics into the strategic planning, and 2) The difficulty of training strategic planners that can be generalized to diverse users. To address these challenges, we propose TRIP to enhance the capability in tailored strategic planning, incorporating a user-aware strategic planning module and a population-based training paradigm. Through experiments on benchmark non-collaborative dialogue tasks, we demonstrate the effectiveness …
