Study Of Charm Production In Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Study Of Charm Production In Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The production rates of D∗±D∗±, D∗±sDs∗±, D±D±, D0/D¯0D0/D¯0, D±sDs±, and Λ+c/Λ¯−cΛc+/Λ¯c− in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ decays are measured using the LEP I data sample recorded by the ALEPH detector. The fractional energy spectrum of the D∗±D∗± is well described as the sum of three contributions: charm hadronisation, b hadron decays and gluon splitting into a pair of heavy quarks. The probability for a c quark to hadronise into a D∗+D∗+ is found to be f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.)f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.). The average fraction of the beam energy carried by D∗±D∗± mesons in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ events is measured to be ⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.).⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.). An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2000

An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many data analysts require tools which can integrate their database management packages (e.g. Microsoft Access) with their data analysis ones (e.g. SAS, SPSS), and provide guidance for the selection of appropriate mining algorithms. In addition, the analysts need to extract and validate statistical results to facilitate data mining. In this paper, we describe an integrated data mining system called the Linear Correlation Discovery System (LCDS) that meets the above requirement. LCDS consists of four major sub-components, two of which, the selection assistant and the statistics coupler, are discussed in this paper. The former examines the schema and instances to determine …

An Empirical Analysis Of Unit Trust Performance In Singapore, Joseph H. H. Chia, Yiu Kuen Tse Jan 2000

An Empirical Analysis Of Unit Trust Performance In Singapore, Joseph H. H. Chia, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Singapore government’s recent strategic plan to develop the financial sector has placed much emphasis on the fund management industry. In this paper we examine the unit trust performance in Singapore in the 90s. Our results show that fund managers in general performed poorly in security analysis and market timing. However, they performed fairly well in risk-adjusted returns and generally maintained well-diversified portfolios. We find that there is little consistency in the performance ranking of the evaluated portfolios, although there is evidence of repeat performance of some top funds. Our analysis also shows that fund managers could indeed make excess …

The Integration Of Relationship Instances From Heterogeneous Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2000

The Integration Of Relationship Instances From Heterogeneous Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the process of integrating legacy databases, one has to resolve inter-database conflicts at both the schema and instance levels. In this paper, we discuss relationship conflicts as a special type of conflicts to be resolved during the database integration. Relationships are properties that relate real world objects. So far, most inter-database relationship conflicts are addressed at the schema-level by various schema integration techniques. However, instance-level relationship conflicts are largely neglected. This paper therefore investigates the causes of instance-level relationship conflicts and proposes a taxonomy for classifying instance-level relationship conflicts. In addition, we develop a systematic process to resolve instance-level …

Inclusive Production Of Π0, Η, Η′ (958), Kg0s And Λ In Two- And Three-Jet Events From Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Inclusive Production Of Π0, Η, Η′ (958), Kg0s And Λ In Two- And Three-Jet Events From Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The production rates and the inclusive cross sections of the isovector meson π0π0, the isoscalar mesons ηη and η′(958)η′(958), the strange meson K0SKS0 and the ΛΛ baryon have been measured as functions of scaled energy in hadronic events, two-jet events and each jet of three-jet events from hadronic Z decays and compared to Monte Carlo models. The analysis is based on 3.7 million hadronic events collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=91.2s=91.2 GeV. The JETSET modelling of the gluon fragmentation into isoscalar mesons is found to be in agreement with the experimental results. HERWIG …

Does The Invisible Hand Need A Transparent Glove?, Ann Florini Jan 2000

Does The Invisible Hand Need A Transparent Glove?, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Transparency is on the rise, touted as the solution to such disparate problems asfinancial volatility, environmental degradation, money laundering, and corruption. Buttransparency faces much opposition, particularly from those under scrutiny. Such actorsoften have strong incentives to avoid providing information. To explain the growingdemand for transparency and to assess its prospects for success requires attention tomatters of politics – that is, power. Power is often needed to induce disclosures orrestructure incentives. And the information thus revealed can shift power from the formerholders of secrets to the newly informed. This paper explores the politics of transparency– why it is emerging, and what …

Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong Jan 2000

Religion And Modernity: Ritual Transformations And The Reconstruction Of Space And Time, Chee Kiong Tong, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we use the case of Chinese religion in Singapore to examine the relationships between religion and modernity, and between social processes, on the one hand, and spatial conceptions, forms and structures and temporal practices, on the other. Specifically, we look at how traditional Chinese rituals are being modified, reinterpreted and invented to fit with modern living. Such ritual transformations entail reconstructed notions of space and time. Through such transformations, modernity does not simply lead to the demise of religious beliefs and practices but allows for a continued role for religion in providing a meaning system for Chinese …

Study Of Fermion Pair Production In E+E- Collisions At 130-183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Study Of Fermion Pair Production In E+E- Collisions At 130-183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries of hadronic and leptonic events produced in e+e−e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV are presented. Results for e+e−e+e−, μ+μ−μ+μ−, τ+τ−τ+τ−, qq¯qq¯, bb¯bb¯ and cc¯cc¯ production show no significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions. This enables constraints to be set upon physics beyond the Standard Model such as four-fermion contact interactions, leptoquarks, Z′Z′ bosons and R-parity violating squarks and sneutrinos. Limits on the energy scale ΛΛ of e+e−ff¯e+e−ff¯ contact interactions are typically in the range from 2 to 10 TeV. Limits on R-parity violating sneutrinos reach masses of a few …

The Singapore Legal System – History, Theory And Practice, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 2000

The Singapore Legal System – History, Theory And Practice, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Law is central to order and stability and, without order and stability, societal as well as economic viability (let alone progress) are impossible The alternative is 'rule of man', and all the dangers of fallibility and (consequently) despotism that that entails. One central difficulty has, of course, been the maintenance of the argument that law is consonant with objective truth for if the law does not in fact possess this quality, then the 'rule of law' turns out to be the 'rule of man' after all. However, it is difficult, on rational grounds at least, to reject the concept of …

Search For R-Parity Violating Decays Of Supersymmetric Particles In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Near 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Search For R-Parity Violating Decays Of Supersymmetric Particles In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Near 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searches for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a single dominant LLE¯LLE¯, LQD¯LQD¯ or U¯D¯D¯U¯D¯D¯ coupling are performed using the data collected by the ALEPH collaboration at centre-of-mass energies of 181–184 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. Upper limits on the production cross-sections and lower limits on the masses of charginos, sleptons, squarks and sneutrinos are derived.

In April 1995, I asked four Nebraskans from the private sector and four senior people of the University to review the administrative processes of the University of Nebraska. In the appointment letter for this Task Force, I noted that many current administrative processes need to be examined to improve quality and productivity.

Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders Dec 1999

Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational leaders provide the primary impetus in defining, forming and shaping corporate culture. Leadership literature emphasizes on the leader's role in "articulating a vision" and the leader's pivotal role in establishing culture by setting objectives and then removing hurdles by smoothing the path for attaining those objectives. The model of corporate culture transmission focuses on behaviors that corporate leaders employ to create, communicate and manage corporate culture. However, the model does not emphasize interpretation and identification with leader behaviors in ways that would cause members to embrace the leader's values and beliefs. Improved focus over two decades does not yet …

The Window Distribution Of Multiple Tcps With Random Loss Queues, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Dec 1999

The Window Distribution Of Multiple Tcps With Random Loss Queues, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Two approximate techniques for analyzing the window size distribution of TCP flows sharing a RED-like bottleneck queue are presented. Both methods presented first use a fixed point algorithm to obtain the mean window sizes of the flows, and the mean queue length in the bottleneck buffer. The simpler of the two methods then uses the ‘square root formula’ for TCP; the other method is more complicated. More often than not, the simpler method is slightly more accurate; this is probably due to the fact that window sizes of the different flows are negatively correlated.

Multivariate Density Forecast Evaluation And Calibration In Financial Risk Management: High-Frequency Returns On Foreign Exchange, Francis X. Diebold, Jinyong Hahn, Anthony S. Tay Nov 1999

Multivariate Density Forecast Evaluation And Calibration In Financial Risk Management: High-Frequency Returns On Foreign Exchange, Francis X. Diebold, Jinyong Hahn, Anthony S. Tay

Research Collection School Of Economics

We provide a framework for evaluating and improving multivariate density forecasts. Among other things, the multivariate framework lets us evaluate the adequacy of density forecasts involving cross-variable interactions, such as time-varying conditional correlations. We also provide conditions under which a technique of density forecast calibration can be used to improve deficient density forecasts, and we show how the calibration method can be used to generate good density forecasts from econometric models, even when the conditional density is unknown. Finally, motivated by recent advances in financial risk management, we provide a detailed application to multivariate high-frequency exchange rate density forecasts. © …

An Investigation Of Price Discovery In Informationally-Linked Markets: Equity Trading In Malaysia And Singapore, David K. Ding, Frederick H. Harris, Sie Ting Lau, Thomas H. Mclnish Nov 1999

An Investigation Of Price Discovery In Informationally-Linked Markets: Equity Trading In Malaysia And Singapore, David K. Ding, Frederick H. Harris, Sie Ting Lau, Thomas H. Mclnish

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using transactions data for the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) for a major Malaysian conglomerate, Sime Darby Berhad, and intraday exchange rate data, we investigate whether and to what extent each exchange contributes to price discovery. Results indicate that the price series are cointegrated. The raw data appear to indicate the presence of arbitrage opportunities, but none exist after taking exchange rate changes into account. Using the common long-memory factors of Gonzalo and Granger (1995, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 13, 1-9), we show that while the majority of the price discovery (approximately …

Design Approaches To Model-Based Simulation In Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction, Bjoern Helfesrieder, Venky Shankararaman Sep 1999

Design Approaches To Model-Based Simulation In Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction, Bjoern Helfesrieder, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model-based simulation systems have been created in various fields of engineering to train personnel or students in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex devices and systems. A review of literature indicates a lack of good overviews of the approaches to system design of model-based training simulations in Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction (ICAI). Though single systems have to some extent been evaluated with regard to their performance, an organised evaluation, especially a comparative evaluation of the systems that have been created within the field is lacking. To be able to successfully conduct an in-depth review under these conditions, we concentrate and …

Manufacturing Strategy And New Venture Performance: A Comparison Of Independent And Corporate Ventures In The Biotechnology Industry, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George Sep 1999

Manufacturing Strategy And New Venture Performance: A Comparison Of Independent And Corporate Ventures In The Biotechnology Industry, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Little empirical research has compared the manufacturing strategies of corporate and independent new ventures. This study explores these differences with data from the young, science-based biotechnology industry, and examines the performance effects of manufacturing strategy variables including scope, competitive thrust, and capabilities. The results show that the corporate and independent biotechnology new ventures pursue significantly different manufacturing strategies, and that different dimensions of manufacturing strategies affect the performance of corporate vs. independent ventures quite differently.

Is The Term Premium A Risk Premium?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh Sep 1999

Is The Term Premium A Risk Premium?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper explores whether excess holding period returns on long vis-a-vis short-term securities behave in a manner that is consistent with (1) market efficiency, (2) the time-varying-term-premium variant of the expectations hypothesis, and (3) theories of the term premium that view it as a reward for risk bearing. Both traditional and modern theories of the term premium imply that it should evolve fairly slowly over time as attitudes toward risk and/or perceived covariances with wealth or consumption change. This implies that this period's term premium should have some predictive ability for next period's. However, we find that this quarter's ex-post …

Camera Break Detection By Partitioning Of 2d Spatio-Temporal Images In Mpeg Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 1999

Camera Break Detection By Partitioning Of 2d Spatio-Temporal Images In Mpeg Domain, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a new approach to detect camera cuts and wipes. The approach projects a video into two images representing the spatio-temporal continuity of a video life. Visually, these images are composed by regions of different patterns, each region represents the temporal location of a shot. The shape of a region boundary inherently classifies cut and wipe, and most importantly, marks the start and end of a wipe sequence. We hence formulate algorithms to locate the color and texture discontinuities occurring at the boundaries of image regions.

The Effectiveness Of Expert Support Technology For Decision Making: Individuals Versus Small Groups, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jiye Mao, Izak Benbasat Jun 1999

The Effectiveness Of Expert Support Technology For Decision Making: Individuals Versus Small Groups, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jiye Mao, Izak Benbasat

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Expert support systems (ESSs) are increasingly used in organizations to support individuals and groups in decision making. Although ESSs have been shown to enhance the decision-making capabilities of individuals, their benefits in supporting group decision making are less clear. To the best of our knowledge, no empirical research has evaluated the effectiveness of the technology in the group setting or compared its usefulness for supporting individual versus group decision making. The results of this research show that ESSs benefit decision making of both individuals and groups and novices are able to gain more from ESSs than experts. The findings also …

Detection Of Gradual Transitions Through Temporal Slice Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. C. Pong, R. T. Chin Jun 1999

Detection Of Gradual Transitions Through Temporal Slice Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, T. C. Pong, R. T. Chin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present approaches for detecting camera cuts, wipes and dissolves based on the analysis of spatio-temporal slices obtained from videos. These slices are composed of spatial ly and temporal ly coherent regions which can be perceived as shots. In the proposed methods, camera breaks are located by performing color-texture segmentation and statistical analysis on these video slices. In addition to detecting camera breaks, our methods can classify the detected breaks as camera cuts, wipes and dissolves in an efficient manner

Notepals: Lightweight Note Sharing By The Group, For The Group, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay, Victor Chen, Jonathan Huang, Rebecca B. Lee, Francis Li, James Lin, Charles B. Morrey, Morgan N. Price, Bill N. Schilit

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

NotePals is a lightweight note sharing system that gives group members easy access to each others experiences through their personal notes. The system allows notes taken by group members in any context to be uploaded to a shared repository. Group members view these notes with browsers that allow them to retrieve all notes taken in a given context or to access notes from other related notes or documents. This is possible because NotePals records the context in which each note is created (e.g., its author, subject, and creation time). The system is lightweight because it fits easily into group members …

Information Modeling And Method Engineering: A Psychological Perspective, Keng Siau Apr 1999

Information Modeling And Method Engineering: A Psychological Perspective, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information modeling is the cornerstone of information systems analysis and design. Information models, the products of information modeling, not only provide the abstractions required to facilitate communication between the analysts and end users, but they also provide a formal basis for developing tools and techniques used in information systems development. The process of designing, constructing, and adapting information modeling methods for information systems development is known as method engineering. Despite the pivotal role of modeling methods in successful information systems development, most modeling methods are designed based on common sense and intuition of the method designers with little or no …

Inventory Reduction And Productivity Growth: Linkages In The Japanese Automotive Industry, Marvin B. Lieberman, Lieven Demeester Mar 1999

Inventory Reduction And Productivity Growth: Linkages In The Japanese Automotive Industry, Marvin B. Lieberman, Lieven Demeester

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The literature on JIT production suggests a causal link between work-in-progress inventory and manufacturing productivity. Such a connection has been described in numerous case studies but never tested statistically. Historical data for 52 Japanese automotive companies are used to evaluate the inventory-productivity relationship. It is found that firms increased their productivity rank during periods of substantial inventory reduction. More detailed tests suggest that inventory reductions stimulated gains in productivity. On average, each 10% reduction in inventory led to about a 1% gain in labor productivity, with a lag of about one year. Such effects were more immediate for Toyota affiliates, …

The Window Distribution Of Idealized Tcp Congestion Avoidance With Variable Packet Loss, Archan Misra, Teunis J. Ott Mar 1999

The Window Distribution Of Idealized Tcp Congestion Avoidance With Variable Packet Loss, Archan Misra, Teunis J. Ott

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyzes the stationary behavior of the TCP congestion window performing ideal congestion avoidance when the packet loss probability is not constant, but varies as a function of the window size. By neglecting the detailed window behavior during fast recovery, we are able to derive a Markov process that is then approximated by a continuous-time, continuous state space process. The stationary distribution of this process is analyzed and derived numerically and then extrapolated to obtain the stationary distribution of the TCP window. This numerical analysis enables us to predict the behavior of the TCP congestion window when interacting with …

Determination Of The Lep Centre-Of-Mass Energy From Zγ Events, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas Jan 1999

Determination Of The Lep Centre-Of-Mass Energy From Zγ Events, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A study of events with photons and missing energy has been performed with the data sample obtained with the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 184 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of about 80 pb−1. The measured distributions are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, leading to constraints on WWγ gauge coupling parameters ∆κγ and λγ. The results from the fit to the cross sections and to the energy and angular distributions of the photons are: ∆κγ = 0.05+1.15 −1.10(stat)±0.25(syst) λγ = −0.05+1.55 −1.45(stat)±0.30(syst).

Critical Legal Studies, Economic Development And Human Rights, Andrew B.L. Phang Jan 1999

Critical Legal Studies, Economic Development And Human Rights, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

I Introduction I want, in this essay, to contrast two approaches in the increasing quest for answers not just to the law, but to the very meaning of existence and life itself. One embodied in the Critical Legal Studies Movement,' is (with one exception) much more pessimistic; the other (which I endorse) is premised on natural law. Secondly, I propose to take this contrast into the sphere of application with respect to the issues of economic development and human rights in an East Asian context.

Monitoring The Stability Of The Aleph Vertex Detector, G. Sguazzoni, Manoj Thulasidas Jan 1999

Monitoring The Stability Of The Aleph Vertex Detector, G. Sguazzoni, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ALEPH Silicon Vertex Detector features an optical fibre laser system to monitor its mechanical stability. The operating principle and the general performance of the laser system are described. The experience obtained during 1997 and 1998 operations confirms the important role that such a system can have with respect to the detector alignment requirements. In particular, the laser system has been used to monitor short-term temperature-related effects and long-term movements. These results and a description of the laser-based alignment correction applied to the 1998 data are presented.
