Spreadsheet Modeling Of Equipment Acquisition Plan, Thin Yin Leong, Michelle L. F. Cheong Jul 2008

Spreadsheet Modeling Of Equipment Acquisition Plan, Thin Yin Leong, Michelle L. F. Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Excel spreadsheets have been used in many classrooms to teach modeling and analysis of real business problems. This can be done with relative ease but often the modeling approach may be inappropriate and the analysis results not easily implemented. In this article, we illustrate these difficulties with the modeling of the number of equipment required in future years, given demand (historical and projected) and the amount of equipment held. We show how the desired output can be, and needs to be related to the given input. For this purpose, we apply the TREND function to predict data into future years. …

Bounded Model Checking Of Compositional Processes, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jing Sun Jul 2008

Bounded Model Checking Of Compositional Processes, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jing Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Verification techniques like SAT-based bounded model checking have been successfully applied to a variety of system models. Applying bounded model checking to compositional process algebras is, however, not a trivial task. One challenge is that the number of system states for process algebra models is not statically known, whereas exploring the full state space is computationally expensive. This paper presents a compositional encoding of hierarchical processes as SAT problems and then applies state-of-the-art SAT solvers for bounded model checking. The encoding avoids exploring the full state space for complex systems so as to deal with state space explosion. We developed …

Timeline Prediction Framework For Iterative Software Engineering Projects With Changes, Kay Berkling, Georgios Kiragiannis, Armin Zundel, Subhajit Datta Jul 2008

Timeline Prediction Framework For Iterative Software Engineering Projects With Changes, Kay Berkling, Georgios Kiragiannis, Armin Zundel, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Even today, software projects still suffer from delays and budget overspending. The causes for this problem are compounded when the project team is distributed across different locations and generally attributed to the decreasing ability to communicate well (due to cultural, linguistic, and physical distance). Many projects, especially those with off-shoring component, consist of small iterations with changes, deletions and additions, yet there is no formal model of the flow of iterations available. A number of commercially available project prediction tools for projects as a whole exist, but the model adaptation process by iteration, if it exists, is unclear. Furthermore, no …

Cross-Country Analysis Of Auditor Specialization Premium: Effect Of Legal, Extra-Legal And Political Environments, Sirinidhi Bin, M. Hossain, Chee Yeow Lim Jul 2008

Cross-Country Analysis Of Auditor Specialization Premium: Effect Of Legal, Extra-Legal And Political Environments, Sirinidhi Bin, M. Hossain, Chee Yeow Lim

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Previous literature has provided mixed evidence of a premium in audit fee for industry-specialist auditors in US and other developed countries. In this cross-country study spanning twelve non-US countries, we provide evidence of such a premium in the international context, implying that specialist auditors provide a higher level of investor assurance than non-specialists. Further, we show that the average audit fee in countries with effective legal, extra-legal and political institutions is higher but the specialization premium is lower than in other countries. We interpret this finding as evidence that while effective institutions increase the demand for average level of audit …

Empirical Analysis Of Certificate Revocation Lists, Daryl Walleck, Yingjiu Li, Shouhuai Xu Jul 2008

Empirical Analysis Of Certificate Revocation Lists, Daryl Walleck, Yingjiu Li, Shouhuai Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Managing public key certificates revocation has long been a central issue in public key infrastructures. Though various certificate revocation mechanisms have been proposed to address this issue, little effort has been devoted to the empirical analysis of real-world certificate revocation data. In this paper, we conduct such an empirical analysis based on a large amount of data collected from VeriSign. Our study enables us to understand how long a revoked certificate lives and what the difference is in the lifetime of revoked certificates by certificate types, geographic locations, and organizations. Our study also provides a solid foundation for future research …

Ranked Reverse Nearest Neighbor Search, Ken C. K. Lee, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee Jul 2008

Ranked Reverse Nearest Neighbor Search, Ken C. K. Lee, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a set of data points P and a query point q in a multidimensional space, Reverse Nearest Neighbor (RNN) query finds data points in P whose nearest neighbors are q. Reverse k-Nearest Neighbor (RkNN) query (where k ≥ 1) generalizes RNN query to find data points whose kNNs include q. For RkNN query semantics, q is said to have influence to all those answer data points. The degree of q's influence on a data point p (∈ P) is denoted by κp where q is the κp-th NN of p. We introduce a new variant of RNN query, namely, …

A Semiparametric Stochastic Volatility Model, Jun Yu Jul 2008

A Semiparametric Stochastic Volatility Model, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines how volatility responds to return news in the context of stochastic volatility (SV) using a nonparametric method. The correlation structure in the classical leverage SV model is generalized based on a linear spline. In the new model the correlation between the return innovation and volatility innovation is dependent on the type of news arrived to the market. Theoretical properties of the proposed model are examined. A simulation-based maximum likelihood method is developed to estimate the new model. Simulations show that the estimation method provides reliable parameter estimates. The new model is fitted to daily and weekly data …

Nonparametric Prewhitening Estimators For Conditional Quantiles, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah Jul 2008

Nonparametric Prewhitening Estimators For Conditional Quantiles, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah

Research Collection School Of Economics

We define a nonparametric prewhitening method for estimating conditional quantiles based on local linear quantile regression. We characterize the bias, variance and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator. Under weak conditions our estimator can achieve bias reduction and have the same variance as the local linear quantile estimators. A small set of Monte Carlo simulations is carried out to illustrate the performance of our estimators. An application to US gross domestic product data demonstrates the usefulness of our methodology.

Numerical Analysis Of Non-Constant Pure Rate Of Time Preference: A Model Of Climate Policy, Tomoki Fujii, Larry Karp Jul 2008

Numerical Analysis Of Non-Constant Pure Rate Of Time Preference: A Model Of Climate Policy, Tomoki Fujii, Larry Karp

Research Collection School Of Economics

When current decisions affect welfare in the far-distant future, as with climate change, the use of a declining pure rate of time preference (PRTP) provides potentially important modeling flexibility. The difficulty of analyzing models with non-constant PRTP limits their application. We describe and provide software (available online) to implement an algorithm to numerically obtain a Markov perfect equilibrium for an optimal control problem with non-constant PRTP. We apply this software to a simplified version of the numerical climate change model used in the Stern Review. For our calibration, the policy recommendations are less sensitive to the PRTP than widely believed. …

Mining Past-Time Temporal Rules From Execution Traces, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo, Chao Liu Jul 2008

Mining Past-Time Temporal Rules From Execution Traces, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo, Chao Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Specification mining is a process of extracting specifications, often from program execution traces. These specifications can in turn be used to aid program understanding, monitoring and verification. There are a number of dynamic-analysis-based specification mining tools in the literature, however none so far extract past time temporal expressions in the form of rules stating: whenever a series of events occurs, previously another series of events has happened. Rules of this format are commonly found in practice and useful for various purposes. Most rule-based specification mining tools only mine future-time temporal expression. Many past-time temporal rules like whenever a resource is …

Mining Temporal Rules For Software Maintenance, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo, Chao Liu Jul 2008

Mining Temporal Rules For Software Maintenance, David Lo, Siau-Cheng Khoo, Chao Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software evolution incurs difficulties in program comprehension and software verification, and hence it increases the cost of software maintenance. In this study, we propose a novel technique to mine from program execution traces a sound and complete set of statistically significant temporal rules of arbitrary lengths. The extracted temporal rules reveal invariants that the program observes, and will consequently guide developers to understand the program behaviors, and facilitate all downstream applications such as verification and debugging. Different from previous studies that were restricted to mining two-event rules (e.g., (lock) →(unlock)), our algorithm discovers rules of arbitrary lengths. In order to …

Explaining The Spatial Organization Of Creative Industries: The Case Of The U.S. Videogames Industry, F. Ted Tschang, Jan Vang Jul 2008

Explaining The Spatial Organization Of Creative Industries: The Case Of The U.S. Videogames Industry, F. Ted Tschang, Jan Vang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The paper presents a picture of the spatial location of the U.S. videogames industry as a broad range of clusters of different sizes, none of them dominant, then uses a variety of qualitative evidence (including interview and ethnographic) to illustrate a theory of how these variegated clusters have emerged and continue to persist, each in their own right. In effect, our main findings are that videogame clusters do not operate as other creative industry clusters, as described by the recent theories of buzz applied to other creative industries, nor by conventional linkage arguments (either to suppliers or financier-distributors). Rather, the …

Timed Automata Patterns, Jin Song Dong, Ping Hao, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Wang Yi Jun 2008

Timed Automata Patterns, Jin Song Dong, Ping Hao, Shengchao Qin, Jun Sun, Wang Yi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Timed Automata have proven to be useful for specification and verification of real-time systems. System design using Timed Automata relies on explicit manipulation of clock variables. A number of automated analyzers for Timed Automata have been developed. However, Timed Automata lack composable patterns for high-level system design. Specification languages like Timed Communicating Sequential Process (CSP) and Timed Communicating Object-Z (TCOZ) are well suited for presenting compositional models of complex real-time systems. In this work, we define a set of composable Timed Automata patterns based on hierarchical constructs in time-enriched process algebras. The patterns facilitate the hierarchical design of complex systems …

Can Monetary Policy Help To Stabilise Asset Prices?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Should central banks use monetary policy to stabilise asset prices, particularly home and equity prices? Stefan Gerlach, professor of monetary economics, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt, points out that no central bank has had lowering home prices as one of its policy goals. Gerlach spoke recently at an Economics and Statistics Seminar at the Singapore Management University on how residential property and equity prices, inflation and economic activity responded to monetary policy shocks in 17 countries from 1986 to 2006.

Inference For General Parametric Functions In Box-Cox-Type Transformation Models, Zhenlin Yang, Eden Ka-Ho Wu, Anthony F. Desmond Jun 2008

Inference For General Parametric Functions In Box-Cox-Type Transformation Models, Zhenlin Yang, Eden Ka-Ho Wu, Anthony F. Desmond

Research Collection School Of Economics

The authors propose a simple but general method of inference for a parametric function of the Box-Cox-type transformation model. Their approach is built upon the classical normal theory but takes parameter estimation into account. It quickly leads to test statistics and confidence intervals for a linear combination of scaled or unscaled regression coefficients, as well as for the survivor function and marginal effects on the median or other quantile functions of an original response. The authors show through simulations that the finite-sample performance of their method is often superior to the delta method, and that their approach is robust to …

Context Modeling With Evolutionary Fuzzy Cognitive Map In Interactive Storytelling, Yundong Cai, Chunyan Miao, Ah-Hwee Tan, Zhiqi Shen Jun 2008

Context Modeling With Evolutionary Fuzzy Cognitive Map In Interactive Storytelling, Yundong Cai, Chunyan Miao, Ah-Hwee Tan, Zhiqi Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To generate a believable and dynamic virtual world is a great challenge in interactive storytelling. In this paper, we propose a model, namely evolutionary fuzzy cognitive map (E-FCM), to model the dynamic causal relationships among different context variables. As an extension to conventional FCM, E-FCM models not only the fuzzy causal relationships among the variables, but also the probabilistic property of causal relationships, and asynchronous activity update of the concepts. With this model, the context variables evolve in a dynamic and uncertain manner with the according evolving time. As a result, the virtual world is presented more realistically and dynamically.

Self-Organizing Neural Models Integrating Rules And Reinforcement Learning, Teck-Hou Teng, Zhong-Ming Tan, Ah-Hwee Tan Jun 2008

Self-Organizing Neural Models Integrating Rules And Reinforcement Learning, Teck-Hou Teng, Zhong-Ming Tan, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional approaches to integrating knowledge into neural network are concerned mainly about supervised learning. This paper presents how a family of self-organizing neural models known as fusion architecture for learning, cognition and navigation (FALCON) can incorporate a priori knowledge and perform knowledge refinement and expansion through reinforcement learning. Symbolic rules are formulated based on pre-existing know-how and inserted into FALCON as a priori knowledge. The availability of knowledge enables FALCON to start performing earlier in the initial learning trials. Through a temporal-difference (TD) learning method, the inserted rules can be refined and expanded according to the evaluative feedback signals received …

Traceable And Retrievable Identity-Based Encryption, Man Ho Au, Qiong Huang, Joseph K. Liu, Willy Susilo, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang Jun 2008

Traceable And Retrievable Identity-Based Encryption, Man Ho Au, Qiong Huang, Joseph K. Liu, Willy Susilo, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Very recently, the concept of Traceable Identity-based Encryption (IBE) scheme (or Accountable Authority Identity based Encryption scheme) was introduced in Crypto 2007. This concept enables some mechanisms to reduce the trust of a private key generator (PKG) in an IBE system. The aim of this paper is threefold. First, we discuss some subtleties in the first traceable IBE scheme in the Crypto 2007 paper. Second, we present an extension to this work by having the PKG’s master secret key retrieved automatically if more than one user secret key are released. This way, the user can produce a concrete proof of …

Information-Theory Based Optimal Location Management Schemes For Integrated Multi-System Wireless Networks, Archan Misra, Abhishek Roy, Sajal K. Das Jun 2008

Information-Theory Based Optimal Location Management Schemes For Integrated Multi-System Wireless Networks, Archan Misra, Abhishek Roy, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a multisystem environment where a mobile node can utilize multiple interfaces and simultaneously connect to multiple providers, new opportunities exist for efficient location management strategies spanning heterogeneous cellular wireless networks. In this paper, an integrated framework is developed for location management in such a multi-system, fourth generation (4 G) wireless networks. This information-theoretic framework allows each individual sub-system to operate fairly independently, and does not require the knowledge of individual sub-network topologies. An efficient location management in such a loosely coupled network is designed by having a mobile node view its movement as a vector-valued sequence, and then transmit …

Dynamic Performance And The Performance-Performance Rating Relation, Jochen Reb, Gary J. Greguras Jun 2008

Dynamic Performance And The Performance-Performance Rating Relation, Jochen Reb, Gary J. Greguras

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this commentary we discuss the appropriateness and usefulness of taking into account the dynamic nature of performance when considering the relation between job performance and ratings of job performance. Like the vast majority of research in this area, Murphy (this issue) does not critically examine whether or how changes in ratee performance over time influence job performance ratings. As noted by Murphy and Cleveland (1995), a limitation of performance appraisal research is that it has ignored that employee performance “…is embedded in a context or pattern of employee performance over time” (p. 73). In this commentary, we argue that …

Measuring Novelty And Redundancy With Multiple Modalities In Cross-Lingual Broadcast News, Xiao Wu, Alexander G. Hauptmann, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

News videos from different channels, languages are broadcast everyday, which provide abundant information for users. To effectively search, retrieve, browse and track news stories, news story similarity plays a critical role in assessing the novelty and redundancy among news stories. In this paper, we explore different measures of novelty and redundancy detection for cross-lingual news stories. A news story is represented by multimodal features which include a sequence of keyframes in the visual track, and a set of words and named entities extracted from speech transcript in the audio track. Vector space models and language models on individual features (text, …

Do Family Firms Provide More Or Less Voluntary Disclosure?, Xia Chen, Shuping Chen, Qiang Cheng Jun 2008

Do Family Firms Provide More Or Less Voluntary Disclosure?, Xia Chen, Shuping Chen, Qiang Cheng

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the voluntary disclosure practices of family firms. We find that, compared to nonfamily firms, family firms provide fewer earnings forecasts and conference calls, but more earnings warnings. Whereas the former is consistent with family owners having a longer investment horizon, better monitoring of management, and lower information asymmetry between owners and managers, the higher likelihood of earnings warnings is consistent with family owners having greater litigation and reputation cost concerns. We also document that family ownership dominates nonfamily insider ownership and concentrated institutional ownership in explaining the likelihood of voluntary disclosure. Using alternative proxies for the founding family's …

Proactively providing services to mobile individuals is essential for emerging ubiquitous applications. The major challenge in providing users with proactive services lies in continuously monitoring their contexts based on numerous sensors. The context monitoring with rich sensors imposes heavy workloads on mobile devices with limited computing and battery power. We present SeeMon, a scalable and energy-efficient context monitoring framework for sensor-rich, resource-limited mobile environments. Running on a personal mobile device, SeeMon effectively performs context monitoring involving numerous sensors and applications. On top of SeeMon, multiple applications on the device can proactively understand users' contexts and react appropriately. This paper proposes …

Electric Elves: What Went Wrong And Why, Milind Tambe, Emma Bowring, Jonathan Pearce, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Paul Scerri, David V. Pynadath

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software personal assistants continue to be a topic of significant research interest. This article outlines some of the important lessons learned from a successfully-deployed team of personal assistant agents (Electric Elves) in an office environment. In the Electric Elves project, a team of almost a dozen personal assistant agents were continually active for seven months. Each elf (agent) represented one person and assisted in daily activities in an actual office environment. This project led to several important observations about privacy, adjustable autonomy, and social norms in office environments. In addition to outlining some of the key lessons learned we outline …

Capacity Constrained Assignment In Spatial Databases, Hou U Leong, Man Lung Yiu, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Nikos Mamoulis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a point set P of customers (e.g., WiFi receivers) and a point set Q of service providers (e.g., wireless access points), where each q 2 Q has a capacity q.k, the capacity constrained assignment (CCA) is a matching M Q × P such that (i) each point q 2 Q (p 2 P) appears at most k times (at most nce) in M, (ii) the size of M is maximized (i.e., it comprises min{|P|,P q2Q q.k} pairs), and (iii) the total assignment cost (i.e., the sum of Euclidean distances within all pairs) is minimized. Thus, the CCA problem is …

A Tale Of Two Prices: Liquidity And Asset Prices In Multiple Markets, Justin Sai Pang Chan, Dong Hong, Marti G. Subrahmanyam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates the liquidity effect in asset pricing by studying the liquidity-premium relationship of an American depositary receipt (ADR) and its underlying share. Using the [Amihud, Yakov, 2002. Illiquidity and stock returns: cross-section and time series effects. Journal of Financial Markets 5, 31-56] measure, the turnover ratio and trading infrequency as proxies for liquidity, we show that a higher ADR premium is associated with higher ADR liquidity and lower home share liquidity, in terms of changes in these variables. We find that the liquidity effects remain strong after we control for firm size and a number of country characteristics, …

Platform Competition In Digital Systems: Architectural Control And Value Migration, C. Jason Woodard May 2008

Platform Competition In Digital Systems: Architectural Control And Value Migration, C. Jason Woodard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital systems give rise to complex layered architectures in which products at one layer serve as platforms for applications and services in adjacent layers. Platform owners face a difficult balancing act. On one hand, they need to make their platforms attractive to potential complementors by mitigating the threat of architectural lock-in. On the other hand, platform owners must be careful not to give away too much too soon, or risk being unable to recoup their own investments. This paper presents an agent-based model that explores this tension at both the firm and industry levels. Computational experiments show that boundedly rational …

Local Polynomial Estimation Of Nonparametric Simultaneous Equations Models, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah May 2008

Local Polynomial Estimation Of Nonparametric Simultaneous Equations Models, Liangjun Su, Aman Ullah

Research Collection School Of Economics

We define a new procedure for consistent estimation of nonparametric simultaneous equations models under the conditional mean independence restriction of Newey et al. [1999. Nonparametric estimation of triangular simultaneous equation models. Econometrica 67, 565-603]. It is based upon local polynomial regression and marginal integration techniques. We establish the asymptotic distribution of our estimator under weak data dependence conditions. Simulation evidence suggests that our estimator may significantly outperform the estimators of Pinkse [2000. Nonparametric two-step regression estimation when regressors and errors are dependent. Canadian Journal of Statistics 28, 289-300] and Newey and Powell [2003. Instrumental variable estimation of nonparametric models. Econometrica …

A Verification System For Timed Interval Calculus, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun May 2008

A Verification System For Timed Interval Calculus, Chunqing Chen, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Timed Interval Calculus (TIC) is a highly expressive set-based notation for specifying and reasoning about embedded real-time systems. However, it lacks mechanical proving support, as its verification usually involves infinite time intervals and continuous dynamics. In this paper, we develop a system based on a generic theorem prover, Prototype Verification System (PVS), to assist formal verification of TIC at a high grade of automation. TIC semantics has been constructed by the PVS typed higher-order logic. Based on the encoding, we have checked all TIC reasoning rules and discovered subtle flaws. A translator has been implemented in Java to automatically transform …
