Real-Time Near-Duplicate Elimination For Web Video Search With Content And Context, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann Feb 2009

Real-Time Near-Duplicate Elimination For Web Video Search With Content And Context, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the exponential growth of social media, there exist huge numbers of near-duplicate web videos, ranging from simple formatting to complex mixture of different editing effects. In addition to the abundant video content, the social web provides rich sets of context information associated with web videos, such as thumbnail image, time duration and so on. At the same time, the popularity of Web 2.0 demands for timely response to user queries. To balance the speed and accuracy aspects, in this paper, we combine the contextual information from time duration, number of views, and thumbnail images with the content analysis derived …

Learning Image‐Text Associations, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Feb 2009

Learning Image‐Text Associations, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web information fusion can be defined as the problem of collating and tracking information related to specific topics on the World Wide Web. Whereas most existing work on Web information fusion has focused on text-based multidocument summarization, this paper concerns the topic of image and text association, a cornerstone of cross-media Web information fusion. Specifically, we present two learning methods for discovering the underlying associations between images and texts based on small training data sets. The first method based on vague transformation measures the information similarity between the visual features and the textual features through a set of predefined domain-specific …

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Male And Female Avatars, D. Dewester, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, S. Gervais, Keng Siau Feb 2009

An Examination Of Perceptions Of Male And Female Avatars, D. Dewester, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, S. Gervais, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds in which users take the form of avatars. Through their avatars, users can interact with objects and other avatars in the virtual world. Virtual worlds are growing in importance in both educational institutions and businesses. Educational institutions have adopted virtual worlds as a medium for instructional delivery whereas businesses are using virtual worlds for recruitment, training, collaboration, and marketing. Given these emerging phenomena, a better understanding of behavioral and perceptual issues in virtual worlds is warranted. In this paper, we propose a research model to study gender stereotypicality of male and female avatars and …

Stochastic Modeling Western Paintings For Effective Classification, Jialie Shen Feb 2009

Stochastic Modeling Western Paintings For Effective Classification, Jialie Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As one of the most important cultural heritages, classical western paintings have always played a special role in human live and been applied for many different purposes. While image classification is the subject of a plethora of related publications, relatively little attention has been paid to automatic categorization of western classical paintings which could be a key technique of modern digital library, museums and art galleries. This paper studies automatic classification on large western painting image collection. We propose a novel framework to support automatic classification on large western painting image collections. With this framework, multiple visual features can be …

Bmq-Processor: A High-Performance Border Crossing Event Detection Framework For Large-Scale Monitoring Applications, Jinwon Lee, Seungwoo Kang, Youngki Lee, Sangjeong Lee, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present BMQ-Processor, a high-performance Border-Crossing Event (BCE) detection framework for large-scale monitoring applications. We first characterize a new query semantics, namely, Border Monitoring Query (BMQ), which is useful for BCE detection in many monitoring applications. It monitors the values of data streams and reports them only when data streams cross the borders of its range. We then propose BMQ-Processor to efficiently handle a large number of BMQs over a high volume of data streams. BMQ-Processor efficiently processes BMQs in a shared and incremental manner. It develops and operates over a novel stateful query index, achieving a …

Storytelling In The Law Of Unjust Enrichment, Hang Wu Tang Feb 2009

Storytelling In The Law Of Unjust Enrichment, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The development of the law of unjust enrichment is unique in several respects. First, the law has developed at an amazing pace considering that the House of Lords only officially recognised this cause of action less than 20 years ago in Lipkin Gorman v Karpnale. The second remarkable feature of this branch of law is the great influence of academic thinking in the advancement of the law. Among all the legal scholars who have contributed to the development of the law, Professor Peter Birks must stand out as one of the central figures.3 Together with Robert Goff and Gareth Jones, …

Does Size Matter In The Hedge Fund Industry?, Melvyn Teo Jan 2009

Does Size Matter In The Hedge Fund Industry?, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We document a negative and convex relationship between hedge fund size and future riskadjusted returns. Small hedge funds outperform large hedge funds by 2.75 percent per year after adjusting for risk. This over performance cannot be explained by fund age, leverage, serial correlation, backfill bias, or incubation bias. The capacity constraints are not confined to the smallest funds, and manifest across various investment styles and regions. In particular, they are strongest for funds managed by multiple principals that trade small, illiquid securities, suggesting that the observed diseconomies can be traced to price impact and hierarchy costs (Stein, 2002). Interestingly, these …

Modeling The Impact Of Test Anxiety And Test Familiarity On The Criterion-Related Validity Of Cognitive Ability Tests, Charlie L. Reeve, Eric D. Heggestad, Filip Lievens Jan 2009

Modeling The Impact Of Test Anxiety And Test Familiarity On The Criterion-Related Validity Of Cognitive Ability Tests, Charlie L. Reeve, Eric D. Heggestad, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The assessment of cognitive abilities, whether it is for purposes of basic research or applied decision making. is potentially susceptible to both facilitating and debilitating influences. However, relatively little research has examined the degree to which these factors might moderate the criterion-related validity of cognitive ability tests. To address this gap, we use Classical Test Theory formulas to articulate how test anxiety and test familiarity can influence observed scores, observed score variance, and most importantly, the criterion-related validity of observed scores. The resulting equations reveal that understanding the influence of test anxiety and test familiarity on criterion-related validity coefficients requires …

Trust In Coworkers And Trust In Organizations, Hwee Hoon Tan, Augustine K. H. Lim Jan 2009

Trust In Coworkers And Trust In Organizations, Hwee Hoon Tan, Augustine K. H. Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors proposed a modified model of organizational trust that incorporates trust in 2 foci: coworkers and organizations. They found a relation between the 2 foci. The authors also found that trust in organizations mediates the relation between trust in coworkers and organizational outcomes of affective commitment and performance. These findings suggest that it would be meaningful to examine the relations between other foci of trust to better understand how different domains interact and how such exchanges eventually lead to desired organizational outcomes.

Idiosyncratic Risk And The Cross-Section Of Expected Stock Returns, Fangjian Fu Jan 2009

Idiosyncratic Risk And The Cross-Section Of Expected Stock Returns, Fangjian Fu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Theories such as Merton (1987, Journal of Finance) predict a positive relation between idiosyncratic risk and expected return when investors do not diversify their portfolio. Ang, Hodrick, Xing, and Zhang (2006, Journal of Finance 61, 259-299) however find that monthly stock returns are negatively related to the one-month lagged idiosyncratic volatilities. I show that idiosyncratic volatilities are time-varying and thus their findings should not be used to imply the relation between idiosyncratic risk and expected return. Using the exponential GARCH models to estimate expected idiosyncratic volatilities, I find a significantly positive relation between the estimated conditional idiosyncratic volatilities and expected …

Semiparametric Cointegrating Rank Selection, Xu Cheng, Peter C. B. Phillips Jan 2009

Semiparametric Cointegrating Rank Selection, Xu Cheng, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

Some convenient limit properties of usual information criteria are given for cointegrating rank selection. Allowing for a non-parametric short memory component and using a reduced rank regression with only a single lag, standard information criteria are shown to be weakly consistent in the choice of cointegrating rank provided the penalty coefficient C(n) -> infinity and C(n)/n -> 0 as n -> 8. The limit distribution of the AIC criterion, which is inconsistent, is also obtained. The analysis provides a general limit theory for semiparametric reduced rank regression under weakly dependent errors. The method does not require the specification of a …

The Role Of Accounting Information In The Sentiment-Price Relation, Kun-Chih Chen Jan 2009

The Role Of Accounting Information In The Sentiment-Price Relation, Kun-Chih Chen

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study reconciles inconsistent evidence on the sentiment-price relation in prior studies by explicitly considering the effects of sentiment on both investor judgments and risk preferences. Using the uncertainty in accounting information, I am able to disentangle these two effects of sentiment and investigate the causes of the variations in the sentiment-price relation. The results show that, under low uncertainty, the effect of sentiment on risk preferences dominates in the sentiment-price relation, such that a negative effect of sentiment on price is observed. In contrast, under high uncertainty, the effect is less negative and, in fact, becomes positive. This suggests …

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma Jan 2009

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, many Websites have adopted the really simple syndication (RSS) technology to deliver online content to visitors. In this paper, I build an analytical model to examine how the offering of RSS feeds impact the number of visitors, total traffic load, and profit of Websites in a competitive setting. I show that although RSS can always attract more visitors, it may reduce the Website's profit. Interestingly, in a competitive market there are cases that the RSS feeds hurt the offering Website but benefit the competing Website instead. The conditions under which these will happen are derived. I also study the …

Multiuser Private Queries Over Encrypted Databases, Yanjiang Yang, Feng Bao, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng Jan 2009

Multiuser Private Queries Over Encrypted Databases, Yanjiang Yang, Feng Bao, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable encryption schemes allow users to perform keyword-based searches on an encrypted database. Almost all existing such schemes only consider the scenario where a single user acts as both the data owner and the querier. However, most databases in practice do not just serve one user; instead, they support search and write operations by multiple users. In this paper, we systematically study searchable encryption in a practical multiuser setting. Our results include a set of security notions for multiuser searchable encryption as well as a construction which is provably secure under the newly introduced security notions. We also discuss how …

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation, Leming Lin Jan 2009

Acquisitions Driven By Stock Overvaluation, Leming Lin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Overvaluation might drive a firm to use its stock to acquire another firm whose stock is not as overpriced. Though hypothetically desirable, these acquisitions create little, if any, value for acquirer shareholders. Two factors impede value creation for acquirer stockholders from these transactions (despite large differences in relative overvaluation at announcement): acquirers paying large premiums to targets, and investors' correction of acquirer overvaluation during the bid period. Furthermore, acquirer CEOs obtain a large amount of new stock and option grants after acquisitions and realize a net gain in wealth, further suggesting that equity overvaluation increases agency costs and the resulting …

Entrepreneurial Competencies As An Entrepreneurial Distinctive: An Examination Of The Competency Approach In Defining Entrepreneurs, Xiang Li Jan 2009

Entrepreneurial Competencies As An Entrepreneurial Distinctive: An Examination Of The Competency Approach In Defining Entrepreneurs, Xiang Li

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Entrepreneurship is of critical importance to the modern economy. Researchers have studied entrepreneurship for decades. In recent years, significant relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and firm performance has been reported in empirical studies. Applying the competency approach, researchers have assumed that entrepreneurial competency differentiates entrepreneurs from non-entrepreneurs without empirically examining if this is the case. The research conducted under this thesis addresses this gap. Drawing upon a thorough literature review regarding the components, antecedents and performance outcomes of the entrepreneurial competency, we propose the following hypothesis: the entrepreneurs generally possess higher level of entrepreneurial competencies than the non-entrepreneurs, and the entrepreneurs …

Expected Equity Option Returns, Xue Zhang Jan 2009

Expected Equity Option Returns, Xue Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Substantial progress has been made in investigating `Overpriced Puts Puzzle' which exists in index futures options. However, scarce studies focus on whether single-stock options also have similar problems. This thesis analyzes the returns of individual stocks' calls, puts, and their portfolios, both theoretically and empirically. Adopting the methodology of Broadie, Chernov, and Johannes (2008), I find that (1) calls have positive expected returns while puts have negative expected returns. The expected returns of both calls and puts are increasing in the strike price. (2) CAPM alphas and Sharpe ratios are reasonable for calls options, but they are too negative for …

Has The Introduction Of Bookbuilding Increased The Efficiency Of China's Ipo Pricing?, Jiehui Fei Jan 2009

Has The Introduction Of Bookbuilding Increased The Efficiency Of China's Ipo Pricing?, Jiehui Fei

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Book-building is commonly adopted in global primary markets and regarded as the most efficient pricing method for accurate IPO pricing by literatures. China has introduced book-building in 2005 to increase IPO pricing accuracy and the capabilities of domestic institutional investors. However, with the current IPO data from China, I find the level of under-pricing has unexpectedly increased after book-building, which is against the empirical studies of a few domestic papers. Secondly, there's some evidence that with better information disclosure from issuer-side through book-building process, the signaling and ex-ante uncertainty effect that previously caused under-pricing has been reduced. But there're unique …

Illiquidity, Stock Return And Corporate Capital Structure: Evidence From Seasoned Equity Offering, Zhao Yu Jan 2009

Illiquidity, Stock Return And Corporate Capital Structure: Evidence From Seasoned Equity Offering, Zhao Yu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The post-issue underperformance of seasoned equity offering (SEO) is generally explained by asymmetric information and deteriorating operating performance. We complement these traditional explanations with a new parameter, the liquidity, which results from the change of capital structure due to equity offering. The new issuing of equity lowers the debt to asset ratio, lowers the information asymmetry, thus increasing stock liquidity, which is in accordance with the hypotheses presented by Kyle(1985)'s model; Evidence that stocks become more liquid after SEO, thus lower the expected return, resulting to underperformance, combined with the high stock illiquidity before SEO, which coincides the high return, …

Information Role Of Analysts' Target Prices: Event And Intra-Day Analysis, Fan Chen Jan 2009

Information Role Of Analysts' Target Prices: Event And Intra-Day Analysis, Fan Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

I have documented that target prices subsumed in downgrade recommendations are the most informative while target prices in coverage reiteration are the least informative. The First Call database enables me to extend the analysis to an intraday frequency. Conducting event studies using high frequency data, is even more critical given the advent of information technology systems has dramatically changed the landscape of stock trading. The modified approach to event study is relevant to the fast-changing trading environment in today's capital market. For upgrades, there are significant positive market-adjusted returns lasting 20 minutes; for downgrades, there are significant negative market-adjusted returns …

Institutional Distance And Location Choice Of Multinational Enterprises, Yumeng Du Jan 2009

Institutional Distance And Location Choice Of Multinational Enterprises, Yumeng Du

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Even though scholars have realized the importance of the impact of the institutional environment on the strategy of MNEs, most of them have overlooked the first and essential step of the FDI decision location choice. In this paper, we link institutional theory and location choice literature and propose that the difference in the host country and home country`s institutional environments - institutional distance - has a negative effect on the FDI`s location choice. We also formulate hypotheses about firm specific attributes that may moderate this impact of institutional distance on location choice. Using data on Japanese companies` FDI information and …

Markov Switching Var Model Of Speculative Pressure: An Application To The Asian Financial Crisis, Gregorio Iii Alfredo Vargas Jan 2009

Markov Switching Var Model Of Speculative Pressure: An Application To The Asian Financial Crisis, Gregorio Iii Alfredo Vargas

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Markov switching models with time-varying transition probabilities address the limitations of the earlier methods in the early warning system literature on currency crises. Most of the Markov switching models in the literature are largely based on univariate models of exchange rate fluctuations. In this thesis, the components of the index of speculative pressure are modeled using the Markov Switching VAR with time-varying transition probabilities of Martinez Peria (2002). Two approaches, both of which are derived from this model, are taken to determine the probability of a currency crisis: the probability of a turbulent regime and the expected value of the …

On Stock Return Patterns Following Large Weekly Price Movements: The Case Of Hong Kong, Yue Lu Jan 2009

On Stock Return Patterns Following Large Weekly Price Movements: The Case Of Hong Kong, Yue Lu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this paper, I examine the short-run and long-run performance of the largest 49 stocks in Hong Kong market which experience weekly price movements of more than ±10% between 1999 and 2007. For both decline and increase events, one-week significant reversal is documented. But such reversal in returns diminishes very quickly within two or three weeks. From a long-run perspective, I find that large price increases are followed by negative performance, which is consistent with the overreaction hypothesis. However, large price declines are also followed by negative cumulative abnormal returns, which supports the underreaction hypothesis. Such findings indicate that the …

The Announcement Effects And The Long-Run Performances Of Convertible Bond Issuances, Wei Xie Jan 2009

The Announcement Effects And The Long-Run Performances Of Convertible Bond Issuances, Wei Xie

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

We discuss several measurements of equity components in CBs and then examine the short-run announcement effects and the long-run performances surrounding CB issuances by dividing the whole sample of CBs into a debt-like portfolio, a mixed portfolio and an equity-like portfolio. At the time of the CB issuance announcements, the market reactions to different portfolios strictly follow a hierarchy predicted by the pecking order hypothesis. In the long-run subsequent to the CB issuances, the buy and hold stock returns of the equity-like portfolio significantly underperform the industry and market benchmarks and the debt-like portfolio; the operating performances of the issuers …

Three Sections Of Applications Of Co-Integration: Hedge Funds, Industry And Main Global Equity Markets, Zhongjian Lin Jan 2009

Three Sections Of Applications Of Co-Integration: Hedge Funds, Industry And Main Global Equity Markets, Zhongjian Lin

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Co-integration is an econometric property of time series variables. If two or more series are themselves non-stationary (unit root process), but a linear combination of them is stationary, then the series are said to be co-integrated. If there is a co-integration among some time series, we can say there is a long-run equilibrium. That is the non-stationary time series may diverge from each other in short-run, however they would arrive at equilibrium in long-run. Therefore, we can use this methodology to test the existence of commonality of some non-stationary time series. Here we apply a semi-parametric cointegration test introduced by …
