A Self-Organizing Approach To Episodic Memory Modeling, Wenwen Wang, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2010

A Self-Organizing Approach To Episodic Memory Modeling, Wenwen Wang, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a neural model that learns episodic traces in response to a continual stream of sensory input and feedback received from the environment. The proposed model, based on fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART) network, extracts key events and encodes spatiotemporal relations between events by creating cognitive nodes dynamically. The model further incorporates a novel memory search procedure, which performs parallel search of stored episodic traces continuously. Comparing with prior systems, the proposed episodic memory model presents a robust approach to encoding key events and episodes and recalling them using partial and erroneous cues. We present experimental studies, …

On The Sampling Of Web Images For Learning Visual Concept Classifiers, Shiai Zhu, Gang Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang Jul 2010

On The Sampling Of Web Images For Learning Visual Concept Classifiers, Shiai Zhu, Gang Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Visual concept learning often requires a large set of training images. In practice, nevertheless, acquiring noise-free training labels with sufficient positive examples is always expensive. A plausible solution for training data collection is by sampling the largely available user-tagged images from social media websites. With the general belief that the probability of correct tagging is higher than that of incorrect tagging, such a solution often sounds feasible, though is not without challenges. First, user-tags can be subjective and, to certain extent, are ambiguous. For instance, an image tagged with “whales” may be simply a picture about ocean museum. Learning concept …

A Heuristic Algorithm For Trust-Oriented Service Provider Selection In Complex Social Networks, Guanfeng Liu, Yan Wang, Mehmet A. Orgun, Ee Peng Lim Jul 2010

A Heuristic Algorithm For Trust-Oriented Service Provider Selection In Complex Social Networks, Guanfeng Liu, Yan Wang, Mehmet A. Orgun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a service-oriented online social network consisting of service providers and consumers, a service consumer can search trustworthy service providers via the social network. This requires the evaluation of the trustworthiness of a service provider along a certain social trust path from the service consumer to the service provider. However, there are usually many social trust paths between participants in social networks. Thus, a challenging problem is which social trust path is the optimal one that can yield the most trustworthy evaluation result. In this paper, we first present a novel complex social network structure and a new concept, Quality …

Extracting Common Emotions From Blogs Based On Fine-Grained Sentiment Clustering, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Ge Yu, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong Jul 2010

Extracting Common Emotions From Blogs Based On Fine-Grained Sentiment Clustering, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Ge Yu, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, blogs have emerged as the major platform for people to express their feelings and sentiments in the age of Web 2.0. The common emotions, which reflect people’s collective and overall sentiments, are becoming the major concern for governments, business companies and individual users. Different from previous literatures on sentiment classification and summarization, the major issue of common emotion extraction is to find out people’s collective sentiments and their corresponding distributions on the Web. Most existing blog clustering methods take into account keywords, stories or timelines but neglect the embedded sentiments, which are considered very important features of blogs. In …

Industry Recommendations: Characteristics, Investment Value, And Relation To Firm Recommendations, Ohad Kadan, Madureira Leonardo, Rong Wang, Tzachi Zach Jul 2010

Industry Recommendations: Characteristics, Investment Value, And Relation To Firm Recommendations, Ohad Kadan, Madureira Leonardo, Rong Wang, Tzachi Zach

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study analysts’ industry recommendations. We find that the distribution of industry recommendations is quite balanced. Analysts show more optimism towards industries with high levels of R&D, past profitability and past returns. Industry recommendations possess investment value as portfolios based on these recommendations generate risk-adjusted abnormal returns. Finally, industry recommendations contain information which is orthogonal to that included in firm recommendations, and more so for brokers who benchmark their firm recommendations to industry peers. Consequently, the investment value of analysts’ recommendations is enhanced when both industry and firm recommendations are used.

Building Beyond Singapore: Local Real Estate Businesses Venture Overseas, Knowledge@Smu Jun 2010

Building Beyond Singapore: Local Real Estate Businesses Venture Overseas, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Despite the recent property and construction boom in Singapore, local players in this field have always kept an eye on overseas markets. Lured by the promise of profits and prestige, many are setting up in cities around the world. However, unlike consumer mom-and-pop shops, the size of the investment typical of property and construction companies demands an ultra careful study of the overseas market. Companies have also got to ask if they have the required skills, talents and resources to churn a good project, said industry experts at a recent SMU forum.

Z-Sky: An Efficient Skyline Query Processing Framework Based On Z-Order, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng, Huajing Li, Yuan Tian Jun 2010

Z-Sky: An Efficient Skyline Query Processing Framework Based On Z-Order, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng, Huajing Li, Yuan Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a set of data points in a multidimensional space, a skyline query retrieves those data points that are not dominated by any other point in the same dataset. Observing that the properties of Z-order space filling curves (or Z-order curves) perfectly match with the dominance relationships among data points in a geometrical data space, we, in this paper, develop and present a novel and efficient processing framework to evaluate skyline queries and their variants, and to support skyline result updates based on Z-order curves. This framework consists of ZBtree, i.e., an index structure to organize a source dataset and …

Efficient Mutual Nearest Neighbor Query Processing For Moving Object Trajectories, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li, Chun Chen, Gang Chen Jun 2010

Efficient Mutual Nearest Neighbor Query Processing For Moving Object Trajectories, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Gencai Chen, Qing Li, Chun Chen, Gang Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a set D of trajectories, a query object q, and a query time extent Γ, a mutual (i.e., symmetric) nearest neighbor (MNN) query over trajectories finds from D, the set of trajectories that are among the k1 nearest neighbors (NNs) of q within Γ, and meanwhile, have q as one of their k2 NNs. This type of queries is useful in many applications such as decision making, data mining, and pattern recognition, as it considers both the proximity of the trajectories to q and the proximity of q to the trajectories. In this paper, we first formalize MNN search …

Semantic Context Modeling With Maximal Margin Conditional Random Fields For Automatic Image Annotation, Yu Xiang, Xiangdong Zhou, Zuotao Liu, Tat-Seng Chua, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 2010

Semantic Context Modeling With Maximal Margin Conditional Random Fields For Automatic Image Annotation, Yu Xiang, Xiangdong Zhou, Zuotao Liu, Tat-Seng Chua, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Context modeling for Vision Recognition and Automatic Image Annotation (AIA) has attracted increasing attentions in recent years. For various contextual information and resources, semantic context has been exploited in AIA and brings promising results. However, previous works either casted the problem into structural classification or adopted multi-layer modeling, which suffer from the problems of scalability or model efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel discriminative Conditional Random Field (CRF) model for semantic context modeling in AIA, which is built over semantic concepts and treats an image as a whole observation without segmentation. Our model captures the interactions between semantic …

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim Jun 2010

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During social interactions in a community, there are often sub-communities that behave in opposite manner. These antagonistic sub-communities could represent groups of people with opposite tastes, factions within a community distrusting one another, etc. Taking as input a set of interactions within a community, we develop a novel pattern mining approach that extracts for a set of antagonistic sub-communities. In particular, based on a set of user specified thresholds, we extract a set of pairs of sub-communities that behave in opposite ways with one another. To prevent a blow up in these set of pairs, we focus on extracting a …

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan Jun 2010

The Political Mobilization Of Corporate Directors: Socio-Economic Correlates Of Affiliation To European Pressure Groups, Matthew Bond, Siana Glouharova, Nicholas Harrigan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Business has played a central role in the debate over Britain's place in the European Union. This paper examines the socio-economic characteristics of directors of Britain's largest corporations who affiliated either to Business for Sterling or Britain in Europe. It reports associations between directors' social backgrounds and their probabilities of affiliation. Elite university education, club membership, wealth and multiple directorships were all associated with higher propensities to affiliate. The associations are consistent with the idea that directors' social resources allow them to overcome collective action problems as well as supplying them with the motivations to affiliate. They also indicated that …

Who Is James Bond? The Dark Triad As An Agentic Social Style, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Emily A. Teicher Jun 2010

Who Is James Bond? The Dark Triad As An Agentic Social Style, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li, Emily A. Teicher

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

If the Dark Triad are costly traits for individuals to have and individuals are predisposed to avoid interacting with selfish individuals, how do those who have those traits extract resources from their environment? We contend that a specific set of personality traits will enable individuals to do so. We showed that those who are disagreeable, extraverted, open, and have high self-esteem along with low levels of neuroticism and conscientiousness score high on the Dark Triad (Study 1: N = 216). Additionally, having a more individualistic and competitive approach to others and not a strongly altruistic orientation will also help those …

Spirituality At Work And Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Replication Study In Taiwan, Gilbert Tan, Christine Kuo, Eugene Zhen Yao Geh Jun 2010

Spirituality At Work And Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Replication Study In Taiwan, Gilbert Tan, Christine Kuo, Eugene Zhen Yao Geh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Interest in Management, Spirituality and Religion (MSR) research has surged over the last decade. However, most of the studies are done in the Western context. Tan and Geh’s (2009) is an exception. In Tan and Geh’s study, they provided a theoretical model linking spirituality at work with organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) through organizational commitment as the mediator and tested it empirically. The findings of the study, though exploratory, were interesting. They affirmed the effectiveness of affective commitment as a mediator between spirituality at work and OCB. Normative commitment, however, was not as effective. Their findings also show that continuance commitment …

A Hybrid Method To Detect Deflation Fraud In Cost-Per-Action Online Advertising, Xuhua Ding Jun 2010

A Hybrid Method To Detect Deflation Fraud In Cost-Per-Action Online Advertising, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web advertisers prefer the cost-per-action (CPA) advertisement model whereby an advertiser pays a web publisher according to the actual amount of transactions, rather than the volume of advertisement clicks. The main obstacle for a wide deployment of this model is the deflation fraud. Namely, a dishonest advertiser under-reports the transaction count in order to discharge less. In this paper, we present a mechanism to detect such a fraud using a hybrid of cryptography and probability tools. With the assistance from a small number of users, the publisher can detect deflation fraud with a success probability growing exponentially with the fraud …

On Trustworthiness Of Cpu Usage Metering And Accounting, Mei Liu, Xuhua Ding Jun 2010

On Trustworthiness Of Cpu Usage Metering And Accounting, Mei Liu, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the envisaged utility computing paradigm, a user taps a service provider’s computing resources to accomplish her tasks, without deploying the needed hardware and software in her own IT infrastructure. To make the service profitable, the service provider charges the user based on the resources consumed. A commonly billed resource is CPU usage. A key factor to ensure the success of such a business model is the trustworthiness of the resource metering scheme. In this paper, we provide a systematic study on the trustworthiness of CPU usage metering. Our results show that the metering schemes in commodity operating systems should …

Actor-Network Theory Of Cosmopolitan Education, Hiro Saito Jun 2010

Actor-Network Theory Of Cosmopolitan Education, Hiro Saito

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the past, philosophers discussed cosmopolitanism as a normative ideal of allegiance to humanity as a whole. A debate among social theorists, however, has examined cosmopolitanism as an incipient empirical phenomenon: an orientation of openness to foreign others and cultures. This paper introduces actor-network theory to elaborate the social-theoretical conception of cosmopolitanism. In light of the actor-network theory of cosmopolitanism, the paper proposes cosmopolitan education that aims to foster in students three dispositions: to extend attachments to foreign people and objects; to understand transnational connections in which their lives are embedded; and to act on these attachments and understandings to …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Internal Control Weakness And External Audit Effort On Accruals Quality: Evidence From A Unique Canadian Regulatory Setting, Hai Lu, Gordon D Richardson, Steven Salterio Jun 2010

Direct And Indirect Effects Of Internal Control Weakness And External Audit Effort On Accruals Quality: Evidence From A Unique Canadian Regulatory Setting, Hai Lu, Gordon D Richardson, Steven Salterio

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Public disclosure about effectiveness of internal control systems is subject to much controversy in Canada, resulting in Canadian disclosures being made in Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A). These disclosures are provided to investors without a definition of the weaknesses to be reported, without implementation effectiveness testing, no direct management certification and no external audit of such disclosures. Though the cost of such SOX North disclosures are lower than in the U.S setting, the credibility of these disclosures is far from assured, posing an important empirical issue for regulators interested in the cost versus benefit trade-off of various disclosure regimes. We …

New Well-Being Measures: Short Scales To Assess Flourishing And Positive And Negative Feelings, Ed Diener, Derrick Wirtz, William Tov, Chu Kim-Prieto, Dong-Won Choi, Shigehiro Oishi, Robert Biswas-Diener Jun 2010

New Well-Being Measures: Short Scales To Assess Flourishing And Positive And Negative Feelings, Ed Diener, Derrick Wirtz, William Tov, Chu Kim-Prieto, Dong-Won Choi, Shigehiro Oishi, Robert Biswas-Diener

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Measures of well-being were created to assess psychological flourishing and feelings—positive feelings, negative feelings, and the difference between the two. The scales were evaluated in a sample of 689 college students from six locations. The Flourishing Scale is a brief 8-item summary measure of the respondent’s self-perceived success in important areas such as relationships, self-esteem, purpose, and optimism. The scale provides a single psychological well-being score. The measure has good psychometric properties, and is strongly associated with other psychological well-being scales. The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience produces a score for positive feelings (6 items), a score for negative …

Otl: A Framework Of Online Transfer Learning, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi Jun 2010

Otl: A Framework Of Online Transfer Learning, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate a new machine learning framework called Online Transfer Learning (OTL) that aims to transfer knowledge from some source domain to an online learning task on a target domain. We do not assume the target data follows the same class or generative distribution as the source data, and our key motivation is to improve a supervised online learning task in a target domain by exploiting the knowledge that had been learned from large amount of training data in source domains. OTL is in general challenging since data in both domains not only can be different in …

Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim Jun 2010

Prediction Of Protein Subcellular Localization: A Machine Learning Approach, Kyong Jin Shim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subcellular localization is a key functional characteristic of proteins. Optimally combining available information is one of the key challenges in today's knowledge-based subcellular localization prediction approaches. This study explores machine learning approaches for the prediction of protein subcellular localization that use resources concerning Gene Ontology and secondary structures. Using the spectrum kernel for feature representation of amino acid sequences and secondary structures, we explore an SVM-based learning method that classifies six subcellular localization sites: endoplasmic reticulum, extracellular, Golgi, membrane, mitochondria, and nucleus.

Efficient Processing Of Exact Top-K Queries Over Disk-Resident Sorted Lists, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xuhua Ding, Baihua Zheng Jun 2010

Efficient Processing Of Exact Top-K Queries Over Disk-Resident Sorted Lists, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xuhua Ding, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The top-k query is employed in a wide range of applications to generate a ranked list of data that have the highest aggregate scores over certain attributes. As the pool of attributes for selection by individual queries may be large, the data are indexed with per-attribute sorted lists, and a threshold algorithm (TA) is applied on the lists involved in each query. The TA executes in two phases--find a cut-off threshold for the top-k result scores, then evaluate all the records that could score above the threshold. In this paper, we focus on exact top-k queries that involve monotonic linear …

Tort Law, Kumaralingam Amirthalingam, Gary Kok Yew Chan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The three cases on conversion relate to the following issues: the distinction between the tort of conversion and the choice of remedy for purposes of determining the appropriate limitation period, the underlying rationale for conversion that is based essentially on possession of a chattel and finally, the question of whether a temporary certificate of entitlement for the purchase of a car in Singapore may be converted.

Lean Thinking: A Case For 'Rubber Band' Organisations, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

Lean Thinking: A Case For 'Rubber Band' Organisations, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

During bad economic times, the knee-jerk reaction of most organisations is to stay lean. This usually involves cutting financial costs, trimming headcount and renegotiating wages; unfortunately, all short-lived means of trimming the fat. What organisations should do if they want to keep lean is to look within. Many a time, inefficiencies along internal processes chalk up resources that could have gone towards increasing productivity. Organisations that refuse to examine these issues create not only excessive costs, but they also breed a culture where there is no pressure to improve – much like a dangling rubber band, according to John S. …

Private International Law From The Equitable Jurisdiction: Imperialism, Universalism And Pluralism, Tiong Min Yeo

2009 Yong Pung How Professorship of Law Lecture

One side-effect of globalization is increasing cross-border conflict arising from transactions between parties. Today, the courts have sophisticated tools to deal with such conflicts. The focus of this paper is the interrelation between the court’s approach when dealing with problems in its equitable jurisdiction, and its approach when dealing with cross-border problems.

Portfolio Selection Under Distributional Uncertainty: A Relative Robust Cvar In Portfolio Management, Dashan Huang, Shushang Zhu, Frank Fabozzi, Masao Fukushima May 2010

Portfolio Selection Under Distributional Uncertainty: A Relative Robust Cvar In Portfolio Management, Dashan Huang, Shushang Zhu, Frank Fabozzi, Masao Fukushima

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Robust optimization, one of the most popular topics in the field of optimization and control since the late 1990s, deals with an optimization problem involving uncertain parameters. In this paper, we consider the relative robust conditional value-at-risk portfolio selection problem where the underlying probability distribution of portfolio return is only known to belong to a certain set. Our approach not only takes into account the worst-case scenarios of the uncertain distribution, but also pays attention to the best possible decision with respect to each realization of the distribution. We also illustrate how to construct a robust portfolio with multiple experts …

Applicant Screening And Performance-Related Outcomes, Fali Huang, Peter Cappelli May 2010

Applicant Screening And Performance-Related Outcomes, Fali Huang, Peter Cappelli

Research Collection School Of Economics

A fundamental problem faced by employers is how to elicit effort from employees. Most economic models suggest that employers meet this challenge by monitoring employees carefully to prevent shirking. But there is another option that relies on heterogeneity across employees, and that is to screen job candidates to find workers with a stronger work ethic who require less monitoring. We might therefore expect employers who screen candidates more intensively to monitor them less. Using data from a national sample of US employers, we find that employers who screen applicants more intensively for factors that should predict work ethic also monitor …

A Comparative Exploration Of Freebsd Bug Lifetimes, Gargi Bougie, Christoph Treude, Daniel M. Germán, Margaret-Anne Storey May 2010

A Comparative Exploration Of Freebsd Bug Lifetimes, Gargi Bougie, Christoph Treude, Daniel M. Germán, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we explore the viability of mining the basic data provided in bug repositories to predict bug lifetimes. We follow the method of Lucas D. Panjer as described in his paper, Predicting Eclipse Bug Lifetimes. However, in place of Eclipse data, the FreeBSD bug repository is used. We compare the predictive accuracy of five different classification algorithms applied to the two data sets. In addition, we propose future work on whether there is a more informative way of classifying bugs than is considered by current bug tracking systems.

To Inspire Social Change, Talk And Transfer Knowledge, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

It often takes courage, not to mention, a thick skin, to challenge tried traditions and social norms. Not only do social entrepreneurs have to convince people to move away from their comfort zones, they have to inspire and assure them that the hassles of adapting to change will be of good worth. Lives will be inconvenienced, and not everyone will appreciate the efforts of even the most well-intentioned “change maker”. Powerful bureaucrats may also view social entrepreneurs as troublemakers. Yet, despite much adversity, success stories exist. Three accomplished regional social entrepreneurs shared their accounts at a recent panel discussion.

Audit Office Size, Audit Quality And Audit Pricing, Jong-Hag Choi, Francis Kim, Jeong-Bon Kim, Yoonseok Zang May 2010

Audit Office Size, Audit Quality And Audit Pricing, Jong-Hag Choi, Francis Kim, Jeong-Bon Kim, Yoonseok Zang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Using a large sample of U.S. audit client firms over the period 2000-2005, this paper investigates whether and how the size of a local practice office within an audit firm (henceforth, office size) is a significant, engagement-specific factor determining audit quality and audit fees over and beyond audit firm size at the national level and auditor industry leadership at the city or office level. For our empirical tests, audit quality is measured by unsigned abnormal accruals, and the office size is measured in two different ways: one based on the number of audit clients in each office and the other …

Learning User Profiles For Personalized Information Dissemination, Ah-Hwee Tan, Christine Teo May 2010

Learning User Profiles For Personalized Information Dissemination, Ah-Hwee Tan, Christine Teo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Personalized information systems represent the recent effort of delivering information to users more effectively in the modern electronic age. This paper illustrates how a supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) system, known as fuzzy ARAM, can be used to learn user profiles for personalized information dissemination. ARAM learning is on-line, fast, and incremental. Acquisition of new knowledge does not require re-training on previously learned cases. ARAM integrates both user-defined and system-learned knowledge in a single framework. Therefore inconsistency between the two knowledge sources will not arise. ARAM has been used to develop a personalized news system known as PIN. Preliminary experiments …
