‘The Open Letter To The Evangelical Church’ And Its Discontents: The Online Politics Of Asian American Evangelicals, 2013-2016, Justin K. H. Tse Jan 2020

‘The Open Letter To The Evangelical Church’ And Its Discontents: The Online Politics Of Asian American Evangelicals, 2013-2016, Justin K. H. Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent treatments of Asian American evangelicals tend to focus on a shift of attention from their identity-based attempts to found autonomous congregrations to online self-publications. I evaluate this new trend by considering two episodes in Asian American evangelical self-publication: the 'open letter to the evangelical church' in 2013 and the Killjoy Prophets initiative from 2014-2016 when their leader Suey Park disappeared from the Internet. I argue that while Asian American evangelical online self-publication is intended to reform evangelicalism, its discursive nature leads to debates among Asian American evangelicals about whether the cyber-discourse about them is adequately representational. This sobering analysis …

Mitigation Of A Prospective Association Between Early Language Delay At Toddlerhood And Adhd Among Bilingual Preschoolers: Evidence From The Gusto Cohort, Shaun K. Y. Goh, Hwajin Yang, Stella Tsotsi, Anqi Qiu, Yap-Seng Chong, Kok Hian Tan, Lynette Shek, Birit F. P. Broekman, Anne Rifkin-Graboi Jan 2020

Mitigation Of A Prospective Association Between Early Language Delay At Toddlerhood And Adhd Among Bilingual Preschoolers: Evidence From The Gusto Cohort, Shaun K. Y. Goh, Hwajin Yang, Stella Tsotsi, Anqi Qiu, Yap-Seng Chong, Kok Hian Tan, Lynette Shek, Birit F. P. Broekman, Anne Rifkin-Graboi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

There is accumulating evidence of a prospective relation between early language problems and ADHD, a disorder associated with deficits in executive functioning. However, little is known regarding this link among bilingual children. Here, we investigate whether (i) the prediction from language to ADHD may be lower among bilinguals, and (ii) explore if this moderation can be explained by differential executive functioning ability. Utilising a prospective sample of 408 South-East Asian toddlers, bilingual exposure as a moderator of the link between language delay at 24 months to ADHD intermediate diagnosis at 54 months was first examined with an interaction model. Next, …

Using Online Tutorials To Teach The Accounting Cycle, Tracey Chunqi Zhang, Lay Chin Low, Poh Sun Seow Jan 2020

Using Online Tutorials To Teach The Accounting Cycle, Tracey Chunqi Zhang, Lay Chin Low, Poh Sun Seow

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The accounting cycle is an important yet difficult topic for introductory financial accounting students to learn. These students often lack the business context to understand the accounting cycle and find the traditional teaching approach dry. This problem motivates the authors to examine whether a blended learning approach via online tutorials can improve students’ perceived knowledge of the accounting cycle for the undergraduate introductory financial accounting course. The authors developed four innovative online tutorials with a coherent storyline to enable students to learn the accounting cycle and to supplement in-class learning. To test the effectiveness of online tutorials, an independent survey …

Media Literacy, Scientific Literacy, And Science Videos On The Internet, Sonny Rosenthal

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Although video is not a new format for communicating about science, video-sharing platforms have democratized the process. Individuals who wish to share information or ideas about science can use these platforms to connect with potentially large and diverse audiences. This has benefits and drawbacks. The benefits are related to increased access to scientific information and greater public engagement with science. The drawbacks are related to communication within echo chambers and the spread of misinformation. This mini-review presents these benefits and drawbacks with respect to the science video landscape and media and scientific literacies. It concludes with a brief synthesis of …

Climate data are part of our cultural heritage. Enlightenment scientists initiated regular meteorological measurements in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, providing modern scientists a wealth of early weather and climate information from across the world. Very long temperature and rainfall series are widely used as a baseline for current changes and to study past climatic variations at regional scale. But records like these constitute only a subset of all measurements taken. We provide here a partial inventory of meteorological measurements made prior to around 1850. Numerous efforts by individuals, weather services, international projects, and the Atmospheric Circulation Reconstructions over the …

Re-Envisioning The Profound Order Of Dao: Pei Wei’S “Critical Discussion On The Pride Of Place Of Being”, Alan Kam Leung Chan Jan 2020

Re-Envisioning The Profound Order Of Dao: Pei Wei’S “Critical Discussion On The Pride Of Place Of Being”, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This chapter offers a reading of Pei Wei’s “On the Pride of Place of Being”, or in David Knechtges’ translation, “Disquisition on Esteeming the Existent.” In this work, Pei sets out the reasons why the concept of “being” should be privileged in philosophical and ethical reflection. This was an audacious project, for in so doing Pei Wei took on almost the entire intellectual establishment, which during the early years of the Jin dynasty was enamored of the view that “being” is derivative, that all beings ultimately arise from a deeply profound and mysterious source, which though subject to different interpretation …

Holding The Therapeutic State At Bay? Balancing Autonomy And Protection In Singapore's Vulnerable Adults Act, Wing Cheong Chan Jan 2020

Holding The Therapeutic State At Bay? Balancing Autonomy And Protection In Singapore's Vulnerable Adults Act, Wing Cheong Chan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Abuse, exploitation and neglect of adults raise complex issues on the freedom of the individual to choose for themselves versus the powers of the State to intervene. The law has traditionally limited the scope of compulsory intervention to extreme situations only which can frustrate social workers who deal with such cases. On the other hand, it would be unacceptable to allow intervention simply because it is assessed to be in the adults’ best interests. A balance therefore has to be struck between autonomy and protection. This paper examines how Singapore’s Vulnerable Adults Act identifies the point for intervention and embodies …

Trust, Contribution And Equitable Accounting: Analysing Imbalances In Contribution Towards Mortgage Payments, Sing Yong Lim, Hang Wu Tang Jan 2020

Trust, Contribution And Equitable Accounting: Analysing Imbalances In Contribution Towards Mortgage Payments, Sing Yong Lim, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

A frequently litigated issue across the Commonwealth is determining the beneficial interest of property in light of a breakdown of close relationships such as domestic relationships or family members or friends who may have jointly bought property together. These cases are frequently complicated by the fact that there may be imbalances in contributions of the mortgage repayments by one party. How are parties’ beneficial entitlement determined using legal or equitable doctrines? Unfortunately, the current case law has not been entirely clear and judges have used a myriad of doctrines in relation to such a fact pattern which has resulted in …

Coupled Rain Streak And Background Estimation Via Separable Element-Wise Attention, Yinjie Tan, Qiang Wen, Jing Qin, Jianbo Jiao, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jan 2020

Coupled Rain Streak And Background Estimation Via Separable Element-Wise Attention, Yinjie Tan, Qiang Wen, Jing Qin, Jianbo Jiao, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Single image de-raining is challenging especially in the scenarios with dense rain streaks. Existing methods resolve this problem by predicting the rain streaks of the image, which constrains the network to focus on local rain streaks features. However, dense rain streaks are visually similar to mist or fog (with large intensities), in this case, the training objective should be shifted to image recovery instead of extracting rain streaks. In this paper, we propose a coupled rain streak and background estimation network that explores the intrinsic relations between two tasks. In particular, our network produces task-dependent feature maps, each part of …

A Survey Of Spatial Crowdsourcing, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Yuxiang Zeng, Lei Chen, Cyrus Shahabi Jan 2020

A Survey Of Spatial Crowdsourcing, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Yuxiang Zeng, Lei Chen, Cyrus Shahabi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Crowdsourcing is a computing paradigm where humans are actively involved in a computing task, especially for tasks that are intrinsically easier for humans than for computers. Spatial crowdsourcing (SC) is an increasing popular category of crowdsourcing in the era of mobile Internet and sharing economy, where tasks are spatiotemporal and must be completed at a specific location and time. In fact, spatial crowdsourcing has stimulated a series of recent industrial successes including sharing economy for urban services (Uber and Gigwalk) and spatiotemporal data collection (OpenStreetMap and Waze). This survey dives deep into the challenges and techniques brought by the unique …

The Dog That Barks: Understanding Propaganda Campaigns On Territorial Disputes, Frances Yaping Wang Jan 2020

The Dog That Barks: Understanding Propaganda Campaigns On Territorial Disputes, Frances Yaping Wang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Why do authoritarian states promote media coverage of foreign disputes in some contexts, but censor coverage in others? The use of media on matters of foreign policy is prevalent in both autocracies and democracies, yet their functions, especially in autocracies, are not well understood. This dissertation seeks to explain a statecraft autocratic leaders are especially adept at and are commonly engaged in – propaganda campaigns on territorial disputes. This project thus provides a window into the domestic constraints and motivations of authoritarian foreign policy and the resulting statecraft in managing its domestic publics on foreign policy issues. In explaining the …

The Ouster Of Parliamentary Sovereignty?, Benjamin Joshua Ong Jan 2020

The Ouster Of Parliamentary Sovereignty?, Benjamin Joshua Ong

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (“RIPA”) establishes the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (“IPT”), which hears complaints relating to surveillance activities by public authorities. The Supreme Court case of R (Privacy International) v Investigatory Powers Tribunal (“Privacy International”) concerned the Secretary of State’s power under section 5 of the Intelligence Services Act 1994 to issue a warrant authorising MI5, MI6, or GCHQ to enter or interfere with property “specified” in the warrant. The IPT had to decide whether it was lawful for the Secretary of State to issue a warrant in respect of a class of property (sometimes known as …

Of Constitutional Commissions And Expert-Led Interpretation During Processes Of Constitutional Change, De Maartje Visser Jan 2020

Of Constitutional Commissions And Expert-Led Interpretation During Processes Of Constitutional Change, De Maartje Visser

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In an 1816 letter, Thomas Jefferson expressed himself in favour of including a provision in the constitution that would prescribe its regular upkeep. “[E]ach generation”, the Founding Father wrote, ought to be able to revise the constitu- tion “every nineteen or twenty years”, so it could “be handed on, with periodical repairs, from generation to generation, to the end of time.” As we know, his advice was not heeded: the U.S. Constitution is notoriously difficult to change, with the longest interval between two amendments running to slightly more than six decades. Closer to home, the Singapore Constitution similarly does not …

This article considers the legal and practical concerns for trustees regarding cryptocurrencies and other related instruments, which will be referred to as “cryptoassets”. It will briefly introduce the various types of cryptoassets and explore the risks involved when trustees decide to (or not to) invest in these instruments. This article provides a framework on how trustees should approach the issue of cryptoassets.

Geography, Trade, And Internal Migration In China, Lin Ma, Yang Tang Jan 2020

Geography, Trade, And Internal Migration In China, Lin Ma, Yang Tang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper quantitatively studies the local welfare impacts of inter-city migration in China. We structurally estimate a trade model with endogenous migration decisions using data from 279 prefecture-level cities. The results suggest that inflows of migrant workers increase welfare in the destination cities between 2000 and 2005 despite their negative impacts on congestion and nominal wage. The positive local impacts of migration depend crucially on the endogenous firm entry. The positive impacts in the destination cities also spill over to the neighboring cities through inter-city trade, often leading to higher welfare gains in the nearby cities than the destination cities …

Remote Communication In Wilderness Search And Rescue: Implications For The Design Of Emergency Distributed-Collaboration Tools For Network-Sparse Environments, Brennan Jones, Anthony Tang, Carman Neustaedter Jan 2020

Remote Communication In Wilderness Search And Rescue: Implications For The Design Of Emergency Distributed-Collaboration Tools For Network-Sparse Environments, Brennan Jones, Anthony Tang, Carman Neustaedter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wilderness search and rescue (WSAR) requires careful communication between workers in different locations. To understand the contexts from which WSAR workers communicate and the challenges they face, we interviewed WSAR workers and observed a mock-WSAR scenario. Our findings illustrate that WSAR workers face challenges in maintaining a shared mental model. This is primarily done through distributed communication using two-way radios and cell phones for text and photo messaging; yet both implicit and explicit communication suffer. WSAR workers send messages for various reasons and share different types of information with varying levels of urgency. This warrants the use of multiple communication …

Automatically Categorizing Software Technologies, Mathieu Nassif, Christoph Treude, Martin P. Robillard Jan 2020

Automatically Categorizing Software Technologies, Mathieu Nassif, Christoph Treude, Martin P. Robillard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Informal language and the absence of a standard taxonomy for software technologies make it difficult to reliably analyze technology trends on discussion forums and other on-line venues. We propose an automated approach called Witt for the categorization of software technologies (an expanded version of the hypernym discovery problem). Witt takes as input a phrase describing a software technology or concept and returns a general category that describes it (e.g., integrated development environment), along with attributes that further qualify it (commercial, php, etc.). By extension, the approach enables the dynamic creation of lists of all technologies of a given type (e.g., …

Deterministic Identity-Based Encryption From Lattice-Based Programmable Hash Functions With High Min-Entropy, Daode Zhang, Jie Li, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Haiyang Xue, Dingding Jia, Yamin Liu Jan 2020

Deterministic Identity-Based Encryption From Lattice-Based Programmable Hash Functions With High Min-Entropy, Daode Zhang, Jie Li, Bao Li, Xianhui Lu, Haiyang Xue, Dingding Jia, Yamin Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There only exists one deterministic identity-based encryption (DIBE) scheme which is adaptively secure in the auxiliary-input setting, under the learning with errors (LWE) assumption. However, the master public key consists of basic matrices. In this paper, we consider to construct adaptively secure DIBE schemes with more compact public parameters from the LWE problem. (i) On the one hand, we gave a generic DIBE construction from lattice-based programmable hash functions with high min-entropy. (ii) On the other hand, when instantiating our generic DIBE construction with four LPHFs with high min-entropy, we can get four adaptively secure DIBE schemes with more compact …

Teacher-Student Networks With Multiple Decoders For Solving Math Word Problem, Jipeng Zhang, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Qin, Lei Wang, Jie Shao, Qianru Sun Jan 2020

Teacher-Student Networks With Multiple Decoders For Solving Math Word Problem, Jipeng Zhang, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Qin, Lei Wang, Jie Shao, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Math word problem (MWP) is challenging due to the limitation in training data where only one “standard” solution is available. MWP models often simply fit this solution rather than truly understand or solve the problem. The generalization of models (to diverse word scenarios) is thus limited. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach, TSN-MD, by leveraging the teacher network to integrate the knowledge of equivalent solution expressions and then to regularize the learning behavior of the student network. In addition, we introduce the multiple-decoder student network to generate multiple candidate solution expressions by which the final answer …

Deepdrawing: A Deep Learning Approach To Graph Drawing, Yong Wang, Zhihua Jin, Qianwen Wang, Weiwei Cui, Tengfei Ma, Huamin Qu Jan 2020

Deepdrawing: A Deep Learning Approach To Graph Drawing, Yong Wang, Zhihua Jin, Qianwen Wang, Weiwei Cui, Tengfei Ma, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Node-link diagrams are widely used to facilitate network explorations. However, when using a graph drawing technique to visualize networks, users often need to tune different algorithm-specific parameters iteratively by comparing the corresponding drawing results in order to achieve a desired visual effect. This trial and error process is often tedious and time-consuming, especially for non-expert users. Inspired by the powerful data modelling and prediction capabilities of deep learning techniques, we explore the possibility of applying deep learning techniques to graph drawing. Specifically, we propose using a graph-LSTM-based approach to directly map network structures to graph drawings. Given a set of …

Towards Automated Infographic Design: Deep Learning-Based Auto-Extraction Of Extensible Timeline, Zhutian Chen, Yun Wang, Qianwen Wang, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu Jan 2020

Towards Automated Infographic Design: Deep Learning-Based Auto-Extraction Of Extensible Timeline, Zhutian Chen, Yun Wang, Qianwen Wang, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Designers need to consider not only perceptual effectiveness but also visual styles when creating an infographic. This process can be difficult and time consuming for professional designers, not to mention non-expert users, leading to the demand for automated infographics design. As a first step, we focus on timeline infographics, which have been widely used for centuries. We contribute an end-to-end approach that automatically extracts an extensible timeline template from a bitmap image. Our approach adopts a deconstruction and reconstruction paradigm. At the deconstruction stage, we propose a multi-task deep neural network that simultaneously parses two kinds of information from a …

Entity-Sensitive Attention And Fusion Network For Entity-Level Multimodal Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang Jan 2020

Entity-Sensitive Attention And Fusion Network For Entity-Level Multimodal Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity-level (aka target-dependent) sentiment analysis of social media posts has recently attracted increasing attention, and its goal is to predict the sentiment orientations over individual target entities mentioned in users' posts. Most existing approaches to this task primarily rely on the textual content, but fail to consider the other important data sources (e.g., images, videos, and user profiles), which can potentially enhance these text-based approaches. Motivated by the observation, we study entity-level multimodal sentiment classification in this article, and aim to explore the usefulness of images for entity-level sentiment detection in social media posts. Specifically, we propose an Entity-Sensitive Attention …

Testing Alphas In Conditional Time-Varying Factor Models With High Dimensional Assets, Shujie Ma, Wei Lan, Liangjun Su, Chih-Ling Tsai Jan 2020

Testing Alphas In Conditional Time-Varying Factor Models With High Dimensional Assets, Shujie Ma, Wei Lan, Liangjun Su, Chih-Ling Tsai

Research Collection School Of Economics

For conditional time-varying factor models with high dimensional assets, this article proposes a high dimensional alpha (HDA) test to assess whether there exist abnormal returns on securities (or portfolios) over the theoretical expected returns. To employ this test effectively, a constant coefficient test is also introduced. It examines the validity of constant alphas and factor loadings. Simulation studies and an empirical example are presented to illustrate the finite sample performance and the usefulness of the proposed tests. Using the HDA test, the empirical example demonstrates that the FF three-factor model (Fama and French, 1993) is better than CAPM (Sharpe, 1964) …

Strong Consistency Of Spectral Clustering For Stochastic Block Models, Liangjun Su, Wuyi Wang, Yichong Zhang Jan 2020

Strong Consistency Of Spectral Clustering For Stochastic Block Models, Liangjun Su, Wuyi Wang, Yichong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we prove the strong consistency of several methods based on the spectral clustering techniques that are widely used to study the community detection problem in stochastic block models (SBMs). We show that under some weak conditions on the minimal degree, the number of communities, and the eigenvalues of the probability block matrix, the K-means algorithm applied to the eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian associated with its first few largest eigenvalues can classify all individuals into the true community uniformly correctly almost surely. Extensions to both regularized spectral clustering and degree-corrected SBMs are also considered. We illustrate the …

Singapore In The Global Value Chains, Pao-Li Chang, Tran Bao Phuong Nguyen Jan 2020

Singapore In The Global Value Chains, Pao-Li Chang, Tran Bao Phuong Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this chapter, we analyze the participation of Singapore in the global value chains (GVC): how much of its gross exports are GVC-related trade, how downstream it is, and which countries are its key upstream and downstream trade partners. This is done at both the country aggregate and at the sector level. New formulas are proposed in the gross export decomposition framework of Koopman, Wang and Wei (2014) and Borin and Mancini (2017), to characterize a country/industry’s downstreamness in the GVC and the importance of each trade partner in its backward/forward linkages. Singapore is found to start off with a …

Rationalizable Incentives: Interim Implementation Of Sets In Rationalizable Strategies, Takashi Kunimoto, Roberto Serrano Jan 2020

Rationalizable Incentives: Interim Implementation Of Sets In Rationalizable Strategies, Takashi Kunimoto, Roberto Serrano

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates rationalizable implementation of social choice sets (SCSs) in incomplete information environments. We identify rationalizable incentive compatibility (RIC) as its key condition, argue by means of example that RIC is strictly weaker than the standard Bayesian incentive compatibility (BIC), and show that RIC reduces to BIC when we only consider single-valued SCSs (i.e., social choice functions or SCFs). We next identify additional necessary conditions and, essentially closing the gap be-tween necessity and sufficiency, obtain a sufficiency result for rationalizable implementation in general environments. We also characterize a well-studied class of economic environments in which RIC is essentially the …

Model Selection For Explosive Models, Yubo Tao, Jun Yu Jan 2020

Model Selection For Explosive Models, Yubo Tao, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This chapter examines the limit properties of information criteria (such as AIC, BIC, and HQIC) for distinguishing between the unit-root (UR) model and the various kinds of explosive models. The explosive models include the local-to-unit-root model from the explosive side the mildly explosive (ME) model, and the regular explosive model. Initial conditions with different orders of magnitude are considered. Both the OLS estimator and the indirect inference estimator are studied. It is found that BIC and HQIC, but not AIC, consistently select the UR model when data come from the UR model. When data come from the local-to-unit-root model from …

Let’S Get Radical: Extending The Reach Of Baylean (And Forstian) Toleration, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2020

Let’S Get Radical: Extending The Reach Of Baylean (And Forstian) Toleration, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In The Right to Justification Rainer Forst tells us that that social context in which humans find themselves is called ‘political’ when it is ‘an order of justification’ – an order which consists of norms and institutions that are to govern their lives together in a justified or justifiable way.² The most important normative concept that applies to this order, he tells us, is that of justice. Justice ‘overarches’ every form of political community, demanding reasons why some have rights, and asking how it is determined who possesses what claims, and how persons stand in relation to one another as …

Systematic Classification Of Attackers Via Bounded Model Checking, Eric Rothstein-Morris, Jun Sun, Sudipta Chattopadyay Jan 2020

Systematic Classification Of Attackers Via Bounded Model Checking, Eric Rothstein-Morris, Jun Sun, Sudipta Chattopadyay

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we study the problem of verification of systems in the presence of attackers using bounded model checking. Given a system and a set of security requirements, we present a methodology to generate and classify attackers, mapping them to the set of requirements that they can break. A naive approach suffers from the same shortcomings of any large model checking problem, i.e., memory shortage and exponential time. To cope with these shortcomings, we describe two sound heuristics based on cone-of-influence reduction and on learning, which we demonstrate empirically by applying our methodology to a set of hardware benchmark …

Server-Aided Revocable Attribute-Based Encryption For Cloud Computing Services, Hui Cui, Tsz Hon Yuen, Robert H. Deng, Guilin Wang Jan 2020

Server-Aided Revocable Attribute-Based Encryption For Cloud Computing Services, Hui Cui, Tsz Hon Yuen, Robert H. Deng, Guilin Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) has been regarded as a promising solution in cloud computing services to enable scalable access control without compromising the security. Despite of the advantages, efficient user revocation has been a challenge in ABE. One suggestion for user revocation is using the binary tree in the key generation phase of an ABE scheme, which enables a trusted key generation center to periodically distribute the key update information to all nonrevoked users over a public channel. This revocation approach reduces the size of key updates from linear to logarithmic in the number of users. But it requires each user …
