Grounding Is All You Need? Dual Temporal Grounding For Video Dialog, You Qin, Wei Ji, Xinze Lan, Hao Fei, Xun Yang, Dan Guo, Roger Zimmermann, Lizi Liao Feb 2026

Grounding Is All You Need? Dual Temporal Grounding For Video Dialog, You Qin, Wei Ji, Xinze Lan, Hao Fei, Xun Yang, Dan Guo, Roger Zimmermann, Lizi Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the realm of video dialog response generation, capturing both the essence of video content and the temporal nuances of conversation history is crucial. While some approaches rely on large-scale pretrained visual-language models, often neglecting temporal dynamics, others emphasize spatial-temporal relationships within videos but demand intricate object trajectory pre-extractions and overlook dialog temporal dynamics. This paper introduces the Dual Temporal Grounding-enhanced Video Dialog model (DTGVD), designed to bridge the gap between these two approaches. DTGVD uniquely integrates the strengths of both by emphasizing dual temporal relationships. It achieves this by predicting dialog turn-specific temporal regions, selectively filtering video content, and …

Learnable Game-Theoretic Policy Optimization For Data-Centric Self-Explanation Rationalization, Yunxiao Zhao, Zhiqiang Wang, Xingtong Yu, Xiaoli Li, Jiye Liang, Ru Li Feb 2026

Learnable Game-Theoretic Policy Optimization For Data-Centric Self-Explanation Rationalization, Yunxiao Zhao, Zhiqiang Wang, Xingtong Yu, Xiaoli Li, Jiye Liang, Ru Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Rationalization, a data-centric framework, aims to build self-explanatory models to explain the prediction outcome by generating a subset of human-intelligible pieces of the input data. It involves a cooperative game model where a generator generates the most human-intelligible parts of the input (i.e., rationales), followed by a predictor that makes predictions based on these generated rationales. Conventional rationalization methods typically impose constraints via regularization terms to calibrate or penalize undesired generation. However, these methods are suffering from a problem called mode collapse, in which the predictor produces correct predictions yet the generator consistently outputs rationales with collapsed patterns. Moreover, existing …

The Gains Do Not Make Up For The Losses: A Comprehensive Evaluation For Safety Alignment Of Large Language Models Via Machine Unlearning, Weixiang Zhao, Yulin Hu, Xingyu Sui, Zhuojun Li, Yang Deng, Yanyan Zhao, Bing Qin, Wanxiang Che Feb 2026

The Gains Do Not Make Up For The Losses: A Comprehensive Evaluation For Safety Alignment Of Large Language Models Via Machine Unlearning, Weixiang Zhao, Yulin Hu, Xingyu Sui, Zhuojun Li, Yang Deng, Yanyan Zhao, Bing Qin, Wanxiang Che

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Machine Unlearning (MU) has emerged as a promising technique for aligning large language models (LLMs) with safety requirements to steer them forgetting specific harmful contents. Despite the significant progress in previous studies, we argue that the current evaluation criteria, which solely focus on safety evaluation, are actually impractical and biased, leading to concerns about the true effectiveness of MU techniques. To address this, we propose to comprehensively evaluate LLMs after MU from three aspects: safety, over-safety, and general utility. Specifically, a novel benchmark MuBench with 18 related datasets is first constructed, where the safety is measured with both vanilla harmful …

How Consistent Friendlike Conversation With Ai Companions Influences Our Attitudes And Perceptions Toward Ai: An Exploratory Experiment, Qi Hui Jerlyn Ho, Meilan Hu, Adalia Yin Hui Goh, Emma Jane Pragasam, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite skepticism and distrust in artificial intelligence (AI), it is increasingly integrated into daily life, with its potential benefits drawing interest. Yet little is known about the attitudinal and psychological effects of human–AI interactions, and whether consistent interactions with AI chatbots can change users’ attitudes and perceptions. Our within-subjects experiment (N = 52) investigated how five days of socially oriented, friendlike interactions with an AI chatbot, versus a journaling control, influenced changes in attitudes and perceptions of AI. Participants’ attitudes towards AI, trust, perceived empathy, anthropomorphism, animacy, likeability, perceived intelligence and safety, dependency, and exploratory well-being indicators were recorded. Results …

Counter-Urbanization In China: A Systematic Review Toward A Comprehensive Typology, Chengxue Yang, Qian Forrest Zhang Feb 2026

Counter-Urbanization In China: A Systematic Review Toward A Comprehensive Typology, Chengxue Yang, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Drawing on a systematic review of both international and Chinese-language scholarship on counter-urbanization in China, this article proposes a comprehensive typology of counter-urbanization migrations—consisting of eight types of new migrants—based on the diverse motivations driving such migration. We build a bilingual corpus of 273 research papers published between the 1970s and 2025. Integrating bibliometric mapping and qualitative synthesis, we conduct a systematic review to trace the temporal evolution and thematic diversification of counter-urbanization research. The review reveals persistent conceptual ambiguity surrounding counter-urbanization in the Chinese context, which this study addresses by conceptually distinguishing counter-urbanization from suburban expansion, population decentralization, and …

The Affective Economy Of Toxic Atmospheres: Sensory Governance, Ecological Intelligences And The Performative Politics Of Urban Mosquito Management, Orlando Woods, Creighton Connolly Feb 2026

The Affective Economy Of Toxic Atmospheres: Sensory Governance, Ecological Intelligences And The Performative Politics Of Urban Mosquito Management, Orlando Woods, Creighton Connolly

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper considers how atmospheres can play a powerful role in troubling the management of nature in the multispecies city. It brings the cyclical nature of atmospheric effects, the affective values and il/logics that determine human responses to non-human threats, and the misguided and potentially deleterious health outcomes that ensue into one analytical frame. Drawing on the empirical case of urban mosquito management in Singapore, it considers how the creation of toxic atmospheres through fogging – blowing insecticides into the air in a bid to kill mosquitoes – is ineffective and sets in motion a cascading series of socio-environmental consequences. …

The Case For Ai Authorship In Copyright Law, Cheng Lim Saw, Duncan Lim Feb 2026

The Case For Ai Authorship In Copyright Law, Cheng Lim Saw, Duncan Lim

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Today, with generative AI, literary and artistic works can be created almost effortlessly. There is at present intense debate as to whether works generated by AI – broadly categorised as “AI-assisted” and “AI-generated” works – ought to attract copyright protection. AI-assisted works are those that involve some degree of human intervention. Where AI-generated works are concerned, however, such works are created autonomously by the AI itself with minimal (de minimis) input from an identifiable human being. Presently, it is generally accepted that AI-generated works do not attract copyright protection for want of a human author. This article examines whether it …

Thinkmatter: Panoramic-Aware Instructional Semantics For Monocular Vision-And-Language Navigation, Guangzhao Dai, Shuo Wang, Hao Zhao, Bin Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xiangbo Shu Jan 2026

Thinkmatter: Panoramic-Aware Instructional Semantics For Monocular Vision-And-Language Navigation, Guangzhao Dai, Shuo Wang, Hao Zhao, Bin Zhu, Qianru Sun, Xiangbo Shu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vision-and-Language Navigation in continuous environments (VLN-CE) requires an embodied robot to navigate the target destination following the natural language instruction. Most existing methods use panoramic RGB-D cameras for 360° observation of environments. However, these methods struggle in real-world applications because of the higher cost of panoramic RGB-D cameras. This paper studies a low-cost and practical VLN-CE setting, e.g., using monocular cameras of limited field of view, which means “Look Less” for visual observations and environment semantics. In this paper, we propose a ThinkMatter framework for monocular VLN-CE, where we motivate monocular robots to “Think More” by 1) generating novel views …

Memoryart: Enhancing Llms Via Multi-Memory Models With Adaptive Resonance Theory For Healthcare Agents, Renke Dai, Hebin Hu, Jiahui Zhang, Yilin Kang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jan 2026

Memoryart: Enhancing Llms Via Multi-Memory Models With Adaptive Resonance Theory For Healthcare Agents, Renke Dai, Hebin Hu, Jiahui Zhang, Yilin Kang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Though promising in healthcare consultation applications, large language models (LLMs) face critical limitations in retaining and utilizing long-term memory across multiturn interactions. In particular, existing memory enhancing paradigms are constrained by limited context windows and embedding-based retrieval, often failing to maintain task relevance and still suffering from memory prototype collapse in multi-turn healthcare consultation. To address these challenges, we propose a cognitively-inspired memory framework named MemoryART, which is grounded in Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART)—a cognitive and learning theory of how humans and animals adapt to dynamic environments. MemoryART employs three memory modules—working memory, episodic memory, and semantic memory to support …

Clique Annealing: Semi-Supervised Community Detection Under Crystallization Kinetics, Ling Cheng, Jiashu Pu, Ruicheng Liang, Qian Shao, Hezhe Qiao, Feida Zhu Jan 2026

Clique Annealing: Semi-Supervised Community Detection Under Crystallization Kinetics, Ling Cheng, Jiashu Pu, Ruicheng Liang, Qian Shao, Hezhe Qiao, Feida Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semi-supervised community detection seeks to find a specified community type when only few communities are labeled. Existing "select-then-refine" pipelines often start from mis-aligned cores and rely on Reinforcement-Learning or Generative Adversarial Network, increasing computational cost and limiting scalability. We address these issues with a unified energy framework under crystallization kinetics that jointly models energy, structure, and growth. Based on this perspective, we propose CLique ANNealing (CLANN), which first employs Nucleus Proposer to select candidate clique as community core under four physics-inspired criteria. A learning-free Transitive Annealer then iteratively merges neighboring cliques and repositions the nucleus, enabling spontaneous, scalable community growth. …

Prosocial Ceos And Accounting Manipulation, Mei Feng, Weili Ge, Zhejia Ling, Wei Ting Loh Jan 2026

Prosocial Ceos And Accounting Manipulation, Mei Feng, Weili Ge, Zhejia Ling, Wei Ting Loh

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper examines the association between chief executive officers’ (CEOs’) prosocial tendency and their firms’ likelihood of accounting manipulation. We measure CEOs’ prosocial tendency based on their involvement with charitable organizations. We find that prosocial CEOs are less likely to engage in accounting manipulation, as proxied by material non-reliance restatements and SEC or DOJ enforcement actions. The effect is more pronounced when CEOs are involved with charities that directly aim to improve the welfare of others and when they face stronger incentives to misreport. These results continue to hold in analyses of changes in CEOs’ prosocial tendency around turnover events. …

Inside Out: Improving Large Model Safety, Wei Zhao Jan 2026

Inside Out: Improving Large Model Safety, Wei Zhao

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

While Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are at the frontier of current advancements in artificial intelligence, demonstrating remarkable capabilities across diverse applications, there are growing concerns about their reliability and security. LLMs remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks through carefully crafted prompts that circumvent safety mechanisms, while MLLMs face additional security challenges stemming from their multimodal nature. Despite considerable efforts in reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) and supervised fine-tuning, existing safeguards have proven inadequate in addressing these critical vulnerabilities. This inadequacy stems from the fact that these models are inherently blackboxes that do not provide …

Visual Analytics For Interpretable Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan Jan 2026

Visual Analytics For Interpretable Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Quantum computing has entered a stage of increasing practicality. Many quantum hardware vendors such as IBM, Rigetti, Honeywell, and IonQ now enable experiments on real devices in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. These platforms show computational advantages in domains such as optimization, machine learning, and materials science. However, they remain limited by hardware noise and the absence of human-interpretable information. Existing visual metaphors, such as the Bloch Sphere for single-qubit states or circuit schematics for algorithm design, struggle to convey multi-qubit entanglement or measurement probabilities in ways accessible to human reasoning. Likewise, the rise of variational quantum circuits and …

Constrained Reinforcement Learning: From Single-Agent Safety To Multi-Agent Coordination, Hao Jiang Jan 2026

Constrained Reinforcement Learning: From Single-Agent Safety To Multi-Agent Coordination, Hao Jiang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Real-world decision-making systems such as autonomous driving and largescale ride-pooling must operate under strict safety and resource constraints. Traditional Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods, while powerful in simulation, often fail to guarantee such constraints, limiting their real-world deployment. The fundamental challenge lies in integrating constraint satisfaction with long-term reward optimization, especially when outcomes are stochastic and interdependent across multiple agents.

This dissertation advances the field of Constrained Reinforcement Learning (CRL) from both single-agent safety and multi-agent coordination perspectives. In the single-agent setting, we introduce a Reward Penalty framework that augments the state space with cumulative cost and penalizes only trajectories that …

Automatic Generation Of Introductory Programming Exercises With Large Language Models, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Hua Gia Phuc Nguyen, Gottipati Swapna

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite recent advances in code generation made possible by large language models (LLMs), programming is still an essential skill that computing students need to master now and in the foreseeable future. In learning programming, frequent practices with exercises set at an appropriate difficulty and knowledge level is of crucial importance for students. However, it’s not a trivial task for instructors to create many good quality exercises customized for each student. Programming problems found on Internet sources such as LeetCode are mostly too challenging for novice programmers with no prior coding knowledge. Recent work in AI-enabled education has been leveraging LLMs …

Can We Read Ai’S Mind? A Quest For Transparency, Santhosh Kumar Ravindran, Estera Kot, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are playing an increasing role in critical domains such as healthcare, finance, and autonomous systems, their decision-making processes remain largely opaque. This paper examines the challenges of AI transparency, addressing the “black box” problem using Explainable AI (XAI) techniques such as SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME). It also examines the ethical, regulatory, and societal implications of AI opacity and proposes a Comprehensive AI Observability (CAO) Framework that integrates deep explainability, provenance tracking, and real-time monitoring to enhance AI accountability. By bridging technical solutions with governance structures, this research emphasizes the …

Gui Test Migration Via Abstraction And Concretization, Yakun Zhang, Chen Liu, Xiaofei Xie, Yun Lin, Jin Song Dong, Dan Hao, Lu Zhang Jan 2026

Gui Test Migration Via Abstraction And Concretization, Yakun Zhang, Chen Liu, Xiaofei Xie, Yun Lin, Jin Song Dong, Dan Hao, Lu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GUI test migration aims to produce test cases with events and assertions to test specific functionalities of a target app. Existing migration approaches typically focus on the widget-mapping paradigm that maps widgets from source apps to target apps. However, since different apps may implement the same functionality in different ways, direct mapping may result in incomplete or buggy test cases, thus significantly impacting the effectiveness of testing the target functionality and the practical applicability of migration approaches. In this article, we propose a new migration paradigm (i.e., the abstraction-concretization paradigm) that first abstracts the test logic for the target functionality and …

Design Principles For Customer-Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Leng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan Jan 2026

Design Principles For Customer-Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Leng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Learning-Based Graph Shrinking For Quantum Optimization Of Constrained Combinatorial Problems, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau Jan 2026

Learning-Based Graph Shrinking For Quantum Optimization Of Constrained Combinatorial Problems, Monit Sharma, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph shrinking has recently emerged as a powerful preprocessing technique for hybrid classical–quantum optimization, enabling variable and constraint reduction before quantum solving. Conventional approaches rely on Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) relaxations to compute vertex correlations, but these methods suffer from high computational overhead, instance-specific tuning, and limited generalizability. In this work, we replace the handcrafted SDP correlation stage with a reinforcement learning (RL) based correlation estimator, trained to predict merge quality directly from graph structure. We reformulate the graph shrinking process as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), design a Graph Neural Network (GNN) policy to guide vertex merging, and integrate the …

Towards Secure Program Partitioning For Smart Contracts With Llm’S In-Context Learning, Ye Liu, Yuqing Niu, Chengyan Ma, Ruidong Han, Wei Ma, Yi Li, Debin Gao, David Lo Jan 2026

Towards Secure Program Partitioning For Smart Contracts With Llm’S In-Context Learning, Ye Liu, Yuqing Niu, Chengyan Ma, Ruidong Han, Wei Ma, Yi Li, Debin Gao, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are highly susceptible to manipulation attacks due to the leakage of sensitive information. Addressing manipulation vulnerabilities is particularly challenging because they stem from inherent data confidentiality issues rather than straightforward implementation bugs. To tackle this by preventing sensitive information leakage, we present PARTITIONGPT, the first LLM-driven approach that combines static analysis with the in-context learning capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to partition smart contracts into critical (privileged) and normal codebases, guided by a few annotated sensitive data variables. We evaluated PARTITIONGPT on 18 annotated smart contracts containing 99 sensitive functions. The results demonstrate that PARTITIONGPT successfully generates …

Llamoco: Instruction Tuning Of Large Language Models For Optimization Code Generation, Zeyuan Ma, Yue-Jiao Gong, Hongshu Guo, Jiacheng Chen, Yining Ma, Zhiguang Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, combining the strength of large language models (LLMs) and Evolutionary Computation (EC) has shown promising results for addressing optimization problems. It typically involves either iterative next-step solution seeking or directly prompting LLMs to generate critical optimization codes. However, these methods often suffer from low computational efficiency, high sensitivity to prompt design, and a lack of domain-specific knowledge. We introduce LLaMoCo, the first instruction-tuning framework designed to adapt LLMs for solving optimization problems in a code-to-code manner. LLaMoCo features a comprehensive instruction set that includes code-style problem descriptions as input prompts and robust optimization codes from expert EC optimizers as …

Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang Jan 2026

Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems exhibit fluid agency in multi-step workflows: lacking human-like consciousness or culpability, yet they display behavior that is (i) stochastic (probabilistic and path‑dependent), (ii) dynamic (co‑evolving with user interaction), and (iii) adaptive (able to reorient across contexts). These properties generate valuable outputs but collapse attribution, irreducibly entangling human and machine inputs. Doctrines that assume traceable provenance—authorship, inventorship, and liability—fracture under this unmappability, yielding ownership gaps and moral “crumple zones.”This Article argues that only functional equivalence stabilizes doctrine under unmappability: Where provenance is indeterminate, legal frameworks should treat human and AI contributions as equivalent for allocating rights …

Large Owner Expropriation Threat And Stock Option Pay's Effect On Firm Risk-Taking Behaviors In Weak Institutions, Cuili Qian, Lipeng (Gary) Ge, Xuesong Geng, Jiatao Li, Maria Hasenhuttl

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research Question/Issue: This study investigates the impact of managerial stock option pay on firm risk- taking behaviors in aweak institutional context, a critical question that has been overlooked by the literature. Specifically, we build on the comparative corporate governance perspective that emphasizes the implications of large shareholders' expropriation threat in weak institutions to develop predictions about their impact on the stock option's incentive alignment effect. We further explore the boundary conditions of such a relationship.Research Findings/Insights: Based on a sample of Chinese listed firms between 2006 and 2016, we find that a high level of large shareholders' expropriation threat weakens …

Tuned Out Or Dialed In: How Attributions Shape Observer Reactions To Music Listeners At Work, Oguz Gencay, Trevor Foulk, Michael Schaerer Jan 2026

Tuned Out Or Dialed In: How Attributions Shape Observer Reactions To Music Listeners At Work, Oguz Gencay, Trevor Foulk, Michael Schaerer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Music listening while working is prevalent in contemporary workplaces, with extensive research demonstrating its psychological and behavioral implications. Shifting focus from intra-individual outcomes, the present research examines the social implications of music listening at work. To do so, we adopt a novel third-party perspective to investigate how observers perceive and react to music listeners. Building on attribution theory, we argue that music listening is an ambiguous behavior that invites observers to make leisure or productivity attributions, thereby shaping how they perceive and treat music listeners. We hypothesize that observers perceive music listeners (vs. non-listeners) as less engaged if they attribute …

Testing Mean Stability Of Heteroskedastic Time Series, Violetta Dalla, Liudas Giraitis, Peter C. B. Phillips Jan 2026

Testing Mean Stability Of Heteroskedastic Time Series, Violetta Dalla, Liudas Giraitis, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

Time series models are often fitted to the data without preliminary checks for stability of the mean and variance, conditions that may not hold in much economic and financial data, particularly over long periods. Ignoring such shifts may result in fitting models with spurious dynamics that lead to unsupported and controversial conclusions about time dependence, causality, and the effects of unanticipated shocks. In spite of what may seem as obvious differences between a time series of independent variates with changing variance and a stationary conditionally heteroskedastic (GARCH) process, such processes may be hard to distinguish in applied work using basic …

How Do You Fix Knowledge In Place? Digital Nomads And Infrastructural Stickiness, Emma Grimley, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong Jan 2026

How Do You Fix Knowledge In Place? Digital Nomads And Infrastructural Stickiness, Emma Grimley, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Remote work has become increasingly accessible due to the growing acceptance of remote work arrangements following the COVID-19 pandemic. Some state actors, especially in countries which face a shortage of digital talent and have reputations as leisure-tourism destinations, have begun considering the opportunities for digital transformation or workforce upskilling that highly skilled remote workers may offer. This paper develops the case of remote workers in Thailand to argue that infrastructural stickiness is a critical determinant for effective knowledge transfer to occur. By infrastructural stickiness we refer to the regulatory and socio-material infrastructures that both attract and retain international remote workers …

Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sketches, as a new solution in multimedia systems that can replace natural language, are characterized by sparse visual cues such as simple strokes that differ significantly from natural images containing complex elements such as background, foreground, and texture. This misalignment poses substantial challenges for zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). Prior approaches match sketches to full images and tend to overlook redundant elements in natural images, leading to model distraction and semantic ambiguity. To address this issue, we introduce a distraction-agnostic framework, purified cross-domain matching (PuXIM), which operates on a straightforward principle: masking and matching. We devise a visual-cross-linguistic (VxL) sampler …

Ai Systems For Physicians: A Review From Socio-Technical And Human-Computer Interaction Perspectives, Wu Jiaqi Young, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is accelerating, yet successful implementations of physician-facing AI systems remain limited and uneven. This paper presents a literature review of 40 peer-reviewed studies published between November 2022 and November 2024, spanning clinical, technical, and human-computer interaction (HCI) domains. Anchored in a socio-technical perspective, the review examines our existing understanding of how technical design, user expertise, and organizational factors shape the effectiveness of AI systems in real-world clinical settings. Our analysis identifies two meta-themes: (1) context as a dynamic, multi-level influence that actively reshapes AI system behavior, and (2) trust as an emergent …

Generalized Visual Relation Detection With Diffusion Models, Kaifeng Gao, Siqi Chen, Hanwang Zhang, Jun Xiao, Yueting Zhuang, Qianru Sun Jan 2026

Generalized Visual Relation Detection With Diffusion Models, Kaifeng Gao, Siqi Chen, Hanwang Zhang, Jun Xiao, Yueting Zhuang, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Visual relation detection (VRD) aims to identify relationships (or interactions) between object pairs in an image. Although recent VRD models have achieved impressive performance, they are all restricted to pre-defined relation categories, while failing to consider the semantic ambiguity characteristic of visual relations. Unlike objects, the appearance of visual relations is always subtle and can be described by multiple predicate words from different perspectives, e.g., “ride” can be depicted as “race” and “sit on”, from the sports and spatial position views, respectively. To this end, we propose to model visual relations as continuous embeddings, and design diffusion models to achieve …
