Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga Mar 2016

Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015:

With 80% of its population living below the poverty line, Haiti remains one of the lowest resource countries in the Western hemisphere. Compounding the high morbidly and mortality rates is the shortage of all levels of healthcare personnel including nurses. Most of the health care in Haiti is delivered by Registered Nurses (RN), the overwhelming majority of whom are diploma educated. Research shows that better nursing consistently leads to better outcomes for patients. Increasing the number of nurses with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is central to reducing morbidity and …

The Petal Project: Bringing The Community Together Through Service, Karen M. Parker, Natalie Ann Masco

Biennial Convention (CONV)

As we increasingly become a global community, one of the challenges faced by schools of nursing today is building awareness of and an opportunity for responsiveness to global healthcare needs (Memmott, et. al., 2010; Burgess, et. al, 2014). Since May of 2011, the student nurses and faculty at the Wegmans School of Nursing (WSON) at St. John Fisher College (SJFC) have been involved in an initiative to keep young girls in the developing world in school. The Petal Project began following a medical mission trip with undergraduate students to a school and health clinic in a rural town in the …

Introduction: The Haitian American Nurses Association (HANA) joined forces with the Haitian Professional Coalition (HAPC) and the Bejamin Leon School of Nursing Miami Dade College (MDC) since 2005 to care for the migrant workers in the Dominican Republic. HANA organized and conducted medical missions in various 'Bateyes' (sugarcane plantations) in the Dominican Republic to provide healthcare and supplies to the migrant workers living in impoverished conditions. On March 16-23, 2013, 15 RNSN participated in the immersion project, similar to Gonzalez's (2013) immersive experience. Students collected over 375 book bags filled with school supplies …

Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley Mar 2016

Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015: Purpose: The purpose of most medical mission trips is to instill hope among the hopeless and foster physical, emotional and spiritual wellness among the population served. This objective is difficult to achieve during short-term missions. However, instilling hope in those who are hopeless is possible when there are others willing to intervene during the time period between medical mission team visits. By obtaining a better understanding of the subjective wellbeing of the population served, providers can further explore the nature of the satisfaction or dissatisfaction that is informing the subjective wellbeing of the …

Cultural Competence And Confidence In Nursing Students: A Triangulated Approach To Evaluate Domains Of Learning, Mary Joan Polchert May 2014

Cultural Competence And Confidence In Nursing Students: A Triangulated Approach To Evaluate Domains Of Learning, Mary Joan Polchert

Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)

Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:

Purpose and Theoretical Rationale: The purpose of this triangulated comparative design of cohorts of pre-licensure nursing students is to describe trends over time in self-efficacy strength as measured with the Transcultural Self-Efficacy Tool (TSET) and to interpret reflective narratives of students engaged in learning through cultural immersion during a medical mission. Reflective narratives provide in-depth understanding of perceptions about the social context of diverse populations and develop critical thinking skills. Jeffreys (2010) Cultural Competence and Confidence Model (CCC) guides this research to examine changes in self-efficacy perceptions in the cognitive, practical, and affective …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco Oct 2013

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:

Background: In 2007, an estimated 1.6 million Americans were sent on international short-term medical missions by more than 40,000 sending entities (churches, agencies, schools, etc.) at a cost of three billion dollars (Tazelaar, 2011). Many arguments about the utility and effectiveness of short-term medical missions exist in the literature. While professionals who take part in the trips do so to help others, without proper preparation and education on medical conditions and cultural needs there is a risk for causing more harm than good. Without training, volunteers will be psychologically and culturally unprepared to …

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley Oct 2013

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:

Purpose: Educating nurses for today's global healthcare environment requires providing unique learning experiences designed to foster the development of cultural competence. This may be enhanced by cultural immersion. Not only are students face-to-face with actual health problems, but they are imbedded in the very culture that has produced those alterations, and can clearly observe the proscriptions and prescriptions that will directly and indirectly affect health teaching and care. A service-learning framework, highlighting healthcare, culture, and spirituality guided learning and reflective journal entries of undergraduate nursing students participating in a medical mission spearheaded by …

Purpose: Taking up a global leadership role by providing hands-on nursing on international medical missions, inspires one to enhance giving and leading to yet another level. It is proposed that research incorporated into nursing science be shared with our healthcare colleagues in the Philippines and Ukraine. The purpose of this research is to prepare brief assessment tools for use in global populations. Assessment tools have provided valuable insights into our patients' health outcomes following nursing interventions, and in uncovering underlying reasons for complex symptomology. The KOCI Marginality Index-5 assesses marginality that is significantly positively correlated with anxiety and depression. Additionally, …
