Organizational Trust And Burnout Among Registered Nurses And Patient Care Aides: A Qualitative Study, Katherine C. Brewer, Andrew Dierkes, Allison A. Norful Feb 2026

Organizational Trust And Burnout Among Registered Nurses And Patient Care Aides: A Qualitative Study, Katherine C. Brewer, Andrew Dierkes, Allison A. Norful

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Healthcare worker wellbeing has emerged as a pivotal topic in workforce research. Organizational factors may impact well-being as much as individual and personal factors. One organizational determinant of well-being includes institutional trust; specifically, how the relationship between clinician and employer influences well-being (e.g., burnout). Institutional trust is an important factor in human caring professions, due to the moral and emotional nature of the work and the expectation for safety and provision among clinicians by employers. Existing clinician well-being research rarely studies institutional trust among registered nurses (RNs) and patient care aides (PCAs), despite their important frontline role in patient …

Expanding A Culture Of Caring In Today's Challenging Healthcare Environment, Patricia Ann Blaney, Heike Miriam Doody

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The Covid 19 impact survey, reflected the top reasons for nurses leaving the profession were burnout and well-being (American Nurses Foundation, 2022). Additionally, the American Nurses Foundation’s Three-Year Annual Assessment Survey, nurses are still feeling stressed, exhausted, and nurses with less than 10 years’ experience stated they are either not or not at all emotionally healthy (2023). This is an alarming concern for all healthcare leaders as staff well-being has become a priority. Poor patient and quality outcomes are associated with organizations that have high turnover rates, nurse burnout, and low engagement (Scruth & Allen, 2022). Organizations need to not …

Experienced Nurses: Improving Retention By Implementation Strategies Found In Research And Those Applied In Practice, Hemilla Raju Matta

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background & Purpose: The lack of literature focused on retention of experienced nurses reflects the need for more research in this area to help develop retention strategies and decrease turnover. Literature notes nurses want a safe work place, collegial relationships, supportive leadership and organization, and professional development. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week educational intervention aimed at professional development.

Methods: The quality improvement project was implemented at a community teaching medical center with outpatient services, located on the east coast post IRB approval. A pre/post educational interventional design method …

A New Nurse’S Journey: How To Increase Retention By Providing The Resiliency Tools Nurses Need, Jocelyn E. Marx, Sara Humeny

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

In a recent study, 68% of nurses put their patient's health, safety, and wellness before their own (Linton, M. & Koonmen, J. 2020). This presentation will take you on a journey beginning from the minute a nurse starts in our organization. We believe nurses caring for themselves so they can care for others is a priority. New nurses begin to learn on their very first day of employment at our network how self-care and well-being are a part of our nursing mission, vision, and philosophy, as supported by the chosen nurse theorist Jean Watson. It is encouraged for nurse leaders …

Individual And Workplace Environmental Predictors Of Intent To Leave Current Nursing Job, Kathryn Joyce Leep-Lazar Feb 2026

Individual And Workplace Environmental Predictors Of Intent To Leave Current Nursing Job, Kathryn Joyce Leep-Lazar

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: High rates of registered nurse (RN) turnover in hospitals strain their ability to keep fully staffed. Poor nurse staffing leads to poor patient, nurse, and organizational outcomes (Rae et al., 2021; Shin et al., 2018, 2019). High rates of RN turnover are also costly for healthcare organizations (NSI Nursing Solutions, 2023). While RN turnover rates in US hospitals have increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic (22.5% in 2022 compared with 15.9% in 2019), historically, newly licensed RNs have even higher rates of turnover than their more experienced counterparts (Kovner et al., 2016). It is critically important to understand the …

The Secret Garden: Staff Caring For Staff, Erin Quinlan, Jennifer Schlebusch Feb 2026

The Secret Garden: Staff Caring For Staff, Erin Quinlan, Jennifer Schlebusch

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Healthcare workers provide for others in thoughtful, therapeutic ways, which becomes problematic if their mental and emotional resources are depleted. When healthcare workers experience a self-care deficit, their well-being and patient care are compromised. Recent factors contributing to staff stress include the impact of COVID-19 and the Pediatric Behavioral Health Crisis. An identified need to improve staff well-being was visible. The purpose of this quality improvement project, using the Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology, was to develop and implement the Secret Garden to improve the health of the work environment. The Secret Garden is a staff-only respite space, operationalized and managed to support …

“Promoting Civility And Anti-Bullying Behaviors In The Workplace” Initiatives Driven By The Nurse Residency Program, Leilanie Gacayan Apana

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

To alleviate the fear of “nurses eating their young” and impede disruptive behaviors, incivility, and bullying in the workplace, newly graduate nurse residents (NGNRs) learn strategies to promote a civil work environment upon hire into the Nurse Residency Program (NRP). Setting the expectation of acceptable workplace behaviors early in their nursing careers empowers NGNRs to advocate for and exhibit professional conduct fostering civility in the workplace. The necessity to provide NGNRs the resources to deflect detrimental attitudes in patient care areas was essential to ensure safe patient care and outcomes. During role transition discussions, NGNRs expressed insecurity, distress, and high …

Realist Review: A Tool For Interpreting The Impact Of Structural Stigma On Workplace Bullying-Associated Trauma, Laura Dzurec, Jennifer L. Embree, Monica Kennison, Matthew S. Howard Feb 2026

Realist Review: A Tool For Interpreting The Impact Of Structural Stigma On Workplace Bullying-Associated Trauma, Laura Dzurec, Jennifer L. Embree, Monica Kennison, Matthew S. Howard

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Stigma is a mark of disgrace emerging from shared sets of negative attitudes and inaccurate beliefs. To be stigmatized is to be identified as ‘less-than,’ to be ‘disapproved of,’ to be the focus of often-uninformed criticism. Workplace bullying victims, those individuals targeted by bullies in their workplaces and inveigled/taken in by their bully counterparts’ subtly demeaning affronts, simultaneously become victims of stigma (Dzurec et al., 2014). Recent study data (Howard et al., under review) suggest that for victims, bullies’ affronting behaviors may, ultimately, override personal beliefs. Bullies’ stories come to own those victimized, acting surreptitiously and imperceptibly to direct and …

Leveraging Best Practice Initiatives To Develop An Innovative And Proactive Approach To Stress Management, Shannon Cronin Patel, John Hunt, Mary Law

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: A 2023 Premiere Inc. survey reported that greater than 40% of US healthcare professionals have experienced at least one episode of workplace violence during the past two years. Confounding issues position healthcare professionals at increased risk for experiencing daily stress inducing situations including but not limited to: staffing related deficiencies, increased incidences of workplace violence, and increased risk for secondary victim incidents that perpetuate wounded healers. Despite increases in stress inducing situations, current stress mitigating interventions remain reactive, antiquated, and fail to meet the emotional needs of healthcare professionals. Current stress and critical incident management models provide reactive support …

Managing Nurse Leader Stress To Promote Leader Retention, Rebecca S. Hawkins Feb 2026

Managing Nurse Leader Stress To Promote Leader Retention, Rebecca S. Hawkins

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Nurse leaders are a health care group that has been provided limited support to manage stress and burnout symptoms, yet the impact of leader stress burden on staff satisfaction, patient outcomes, and their own health is vital to the provision of safe, high-quality health care. The problem of leader fatigue and burnout is the ability to retain current leaders and recruit the next generation. An education project targeted to frontline managers in critical access hospitals was provided in an effort to address leadership burnout due to stress and the lack of knowledge of how to manage stress in the moment. …

Impact Of Brøset Violence Checklist On Safety Events In A Mental Health Unit, Maritess B. Bernardo, Catherine Mann

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Practice Problem: There is an increased global risk of violence among health workers (WHO, 2023) that may result to physical, emotional, and psychological harm to patients and staff; resulting in emergency room visits, hospitalizations, increased medical costs, and victim mortality (Grossman & Choucair, 2019). Workplace violence (WPV) involving patients, families, and healthcare workers is an escalating public concern (Bellman et al., 2022). Mental health facilities are at a higher risk for the occurrence of safety events (Hawkins & Ghaziri, 2022). The mental health unit had a monthly average of 17.33 incidents in 2022 and 14 occurrences pre-implementation in the adult …

Lived Experiences Of Nurse Leaders In Creating A Healthy Work Environment, Catherine J. Mohammed Feb 2026

Lived Experiences Of Nurse Leaders In Creating A Healthy Work Environment, Catherine J. Mohammed

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background/Significance: Although the influence of leadership style on empowerment and job satisfaction is well documented, there are few researchers who examined the influence of the leader’s experience on developing the staff nurse’s empowerment and work satisfaction in the creation and sustainment of healthy work environments. The Magnet designation requires that the Magnet CNOs must have transformational and relationship-based leadership traits, yet we know little about the lived experiences of these leaders and how they came to acquire these traits (Pearson, 2020; Pilat & Merriam, 2019; Shaughnessy et al., 2018;).

The empirical evidence supports of the creation of the healthy work …

What Matters Most? Novel Findings From An Innovative Measure Of Coworker Interrelations On Nursing Units, Lynn Varagona, Nancy Ballard

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Coworker support improves trust1 and decreases or prevents nurses’ stress,2 anxiety, or burnout.3,4 Lack of teamwork and cohesion among coworkers can lead to nurses’ stress, burnout, disengagement, and turnover.5 The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, a widely used measure, does not capture coworker interrelations. Team virtuousness, a work environment in which virtues and character strengths (routes to displaying virtues) are practiced, supported, and encouraged5 improves coworker interrelations. People on virtuous teams feel safe, grateful, positive, and supported by one another;6,7 view work as more meaningful; are more engaged; and are …

Exploring Moral Distress In Icu Nurse Practitioners: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study, Steven L. Bocchese Feb 2026

Exploring Moral Distress In Icu Nurse Practitioners: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study, Steven L. Bocchese

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) working in the intensive care environment experience clinical and operational anxiety, such as moral distress. Moral distress occurs when an individual knows the ethically correct action but cannot take it due to internal or external constraints or violation of their professional core values. Causal factors of moral distress in nursing include inadequate staffing, prolonged patient pain and suffering, ethical conflicts in end-of-life care, lack of transparency and false hope, disruptive or aggressive family, and ineffective leadership. Historically, nurses have experienced moral distress at higher levels than other healthcare professionals, especially those in intensive care units (ICU). Because …

Journey To A Heart Safe Community, Mary Mccormack, Carole Zarcone, Kendra Hoepper, Dorothy Veron

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The sudden loss of life is a traumatic event inflicting devastating and lasting impacts on families and communities. It has been estimated that more than 350,000 episodes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) occur annually in the United States (Virani et al., 2021); however, being that there is no nationwide mandatory reporting system, this number may be a gross underrepresentation of reality. The majority of OHCA occur residential homes and in the community setting. Survival rates are heavily dependent upon provision of immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation with neurologic damage occurring within 5 minutes (Brooks et al., 2022).

Unfortunately, the …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Workplace violence and unintentional injury in settings of higher education have increased in frequency in recent years. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health developed a set of practices, programs, and policies collectively known as Total Worker Health®, that includes emphasis on promoting workplace safety and injury prevention. Nurses in academic roles present a unique population in that they have foundational healthcare education but may limited in or far removed from prior emergency response training. Further, little research exists on implementation and outcomes of workplace safety programs in settings of higher education. We developed and implemented an internal, voluntary …

An All-Inclusive Toolkit For Managing Workplace Violence In Healthcare, Brittney L. Williamson, Melissa Rouse

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Violence against nurses is a nationwide problem that has set the stage for unhealthy work environments and has driven nurses away from patient care. So, what can be done to retain our nurses and provide safer work environments? By creating an all-inclusive toolkit for managing violent and aggressive patients, this healthcare organization has made great strides to better protect their nurses.

Impact: To address this problem head on, evidence-based practices were used to develop an all-inclusive toolkit to implement a multifaceted approach to assessment, de-escalation, and allocation of resources. This approach took the guesswork out of what steps to take …

Using Simulation To Mitigate Workplace Violence, Lynda Sanchez, Monique D. Wilson, Derek Sanchez Feb 2026

Using Simulation To Mitigate Workplace Violence, Lynda Sanchez, Monique D. Wilson, Derek Sanchez

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Workplace violence is not new to healthcare whether it is interprofessional, nurse to nurse, doctor to nurse, patient/patient family to healthcare worker. (Kumari et al., 2022) There is a need to provide the healthcare worker with tools and training on ways to mitigate workplace violence (WPV). Simulation is an effective evidence-based teaching and evaluation method often used in healthcare. (Brown et al., 2018; Gutiérrez-Puertas et al., 2020) In an attempt to mitigate WPV this organization began a mandated training using didactic classes from an external training program. This program involved required computer-based pre-work and attendance at a three-hour class which …

Spirituality Educational Intervention To Enhance Nurse Resiliency, Anna Cerra Feb 2026

Spirituality Educational Intervention To Enhance Nurse Resiliency, Anna Cerra

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Relevance/Significance: Healthcare environments are complex exposing nurses to demanding workloads, staff turnover as well as personal stress. Resilience can help new nurses withstand the emotional stress of the workplace and improve nurse retention (Chaing et al., 2021). Evidence suggests that Spirituality Training provides resources to support clinical nurses’ use of spirituality within hospital settings to help diffuse stress, build resiliency and enhance patient outcomes (Chaing et al., 2021; Caton, 2021). Often nurses are not adequately prepared to provide spiritual care.

Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based practice, EBP, project is to provide an educational structure using Spirituality Training …

Cake: Our Story Of The Development Of A Resource To Develop Healthy Workplace Cultures, Caroline A.W. Dickson, Kath Macdonald

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The purpose of this presentation is to share our story of co-designing, producing and testing of an interactive resource to promote individual and team well-being and effectiveness in clinical practice. As we emerge from the pandemic, the spotlight in global healthcare is focused on well-being and healthy workplace cultures. According to Saville (2021) stress and burnout in the workplace leads to staff moral distress and Hinderer et al. (2014) contend it is having a negative impact on patient safety and quality care. The impact extends to recruitment and retention of the health and social care workforce (Buchan et al. 2020). …

Nurse-Led Transformation: Evaluating The Impact Of A Professional Development Intervention On Interprofessional Collaboration, Amanda Kay Garey Feb 2026

Nurse-Led Transformation: Evaluating The Impact Of A Professional Development Intervention On Interprofessional Collaboration, Amanda Kay Garey

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is critical in improving positive patient outcomes and achieving the quadruple aim of enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and improving the work-life balance of healthcare providers. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) effectively enhances the patient experience and healthcare quality (McGuier et al., 2021). According to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), critical drivers for the ongoing growth of developing interprofessional collaborative practice include the need to empower the interprofessional (IPE) community with the best available evidence and research related to IPE and collaborative practice, conduct a continuous review of standard terms for competence, competency, and competency framework, …

Optimizing Workplaces And Patient Outcomes: Implementing Kotter’S Change Model, Jacquelyn Smith, Brandy L. Simpler, Kasey Chance

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Purpose: Healthcare settings continue to experience unique challenges in maintaining healthy working environments while keeping patient care and quality a top priority (Campbell, 2020). Leaders in healthcare strive to develop and maintain healthy working environments and patient outcomes but continue to fall short of these goals (Pechacek et al., 2022). The Kotter Change Model (KCM) provides an organized process that leaders can use to inform and guide healthcare teams during change implementation (Kotter, 1995). Managing change implementation in healthcare settings is no easy task, especially in areas of high stress and staffing shortages. Organized change processes, like KCM, can improve …
