Education And Reminders To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: An Evidence-Based Report, Christiana Mclean Feb 2021

Education And Reminders To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening: An Evidence-Based Report, Christiana Mclean

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. Regular screening can find abnormalities early and prevent morbidity and mortality. But CCS rates are low in the U.S. and at the project site. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to find evidence-based interventions to increase CCS rates. Language-specific, mailed education increased uptake of CCS significantly in underserved populations (Duffy et al., 2017; Jayasekara, 2020). Also, phone and email reminders significantly increased uptake of cancer screening, and multiple interventions were more effective than single ones. (Duffy et al., 2017; Muller et al., 2009).

What Great Looks Like...And How Do We Get There?, Jamie Thomas

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

The purpose of this presentation is to help Critical Care nurses be aware of the expectations of communication and performance in the different roles they are in as a bedside nurse. During meetings with the Critical Care staff nurses, it was identified that not all nurses have an easy time knowing what the expectations are in the different roles they hold. One on one coaching was done to help nurses learn methods to professionally convey expectations, and struggles still remained. This presentation is an opportunity for all staff to share their expectations in an open forum where there was anonymity …

The TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC)© instrument represents an operationalized version of competencies first identified by the TIGER Initiative (Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform, 2017) as knowledge and skills that every practicing nurse should possess to provide care in today's technology-rich healthcare environment. It is a self -assessment tool comprised of competencies grouped into the following categories: basic computer skills, information literacy, and clinical information management. The developers of the tool thought it would be useful to have students enrolled in graduate nursing informatics courses self-assess their knowledge and skills in these areas with the idea that it …

The Impact Of Implementing Mental Health First Aid With Prelicensure Nursing Students In Rural Indiana, Beverly Wilgenbusch Feb 2021

The Impact Of Implementing Mental Health First Aid With Prelicensure Nursing Students In Rural Indiana, Beverly Wilgenbusch

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Rural communities in the United States suffer significantly from a lack of mental health resources (Schroeder and Peterson, 2017). With a lack of mental health providers and community resources, police, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers, and nurses are often the first to provide care to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. It is critical that these first responders have appropriate training and evidence-based tools to keep both those at risk and themselves safe from harm. The MHFA program, originally created in Australia in 2001, is an evidence-based tool that describes how to safely approach and respond to someone in an …

A Smartphone Intervention To Reduce Hospital Readmission Rates In Adult Patients Who Have Heart Failure, Jami Crisman Feb 2021

A Smartphone Intervention To Reduce Hospital Readmission Rates In Adult Patients Who Have Heart Failure, Jami Crisman

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Heart failure is a progressive disease with cyclical patterns of symptom exacerbation that necessitate frequent hospitalization, and often hospital readmission within 30-days of discharge. Financial incentives imposed by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have shifted the management of heart failure to the primary care setting. Telehealth interventions have emerged as cost effective methods to safely manage chronic disease in the outpatient setting. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to evaluate the impact of a heart failure-specific smartphone application on heart failure-related 30-day readmission rates and participant self-care measures.

Student's Safety Perception After A Perioperative Experience, Mary Doerner, Susan A. Seibert Feb 2021

Student's Safety Perception After A Perioperative Experience, Mary Doerner, Susan A. Seibert

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Safety, one of the six QSEN competencies, is an important concept for prelicensure nursing students (Cronenwett et al., 2007). The perioperative environment has a strong safety focus and culture. While didactic information regarding the perioperative environment is offered within a medical/surgical course, an experiential opportunity supports increased insight. A concern is that due to limited perioperative experiences, students may not fully comprehend or recognize the safety concepts (Gropelli & Shanty, 2018; Kilduff et al., 2018). Furthermore, a limited perioperative exposure may impact students’ interest in future employment in the area. The purpose of this study was to examine student perceptions …

When Covid-19 Calls...Who Will Answer?, Diana Ruiz

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

During the initial wave of COVID-19, healthcare leaders struggled to make sense of the chaos and furloughed nurses due to low patient volumes. However, a hospital in Texas took a stance against furloughs and reassigned nurses to “answer” the call to action by launching a community COVID-19 nurse phone line. Late Breaking Reason: The innovation and employee-centered actions taken by hospital leadership during the COVID-19 Pandemic truly exemplified the AACN Healthy Work Environment Standards. As a result of the creation of COVID-designated nurse triage line, thousands of individuals were supported in the community, while nurse roles were preserved and enhanced.

Foot Care Confidence Of Individuals With Diabetes In A Medically Underserved Area, Rachel A. R. Ortega Jan 2021

Foot Care Confidence Of Individuals With Diabetes In A Medically Underserved Area, Rachel A. R. Ortega

Dissertations

More than 30 million Americans have diabetes, and approximately five in every 1000 will be hospitalized for lower limb amputations each year. Foot care is vitally important to prevent both limb and life threatening complications in patients with diabetes. The rate of diabetes in Ohio is 11% and in Lucas County is 12%. High rates of diabetes and low incomes are prevalent in medically underserved areas in Lucas County. Additionally, income, education level, and access to primary care pose unique barriers to foot care for individuals in medically underserved areas. Foot care education that addresses these barriers may affect participation …

Oral Care Practice Guidelines For The Care-Dependent Hospitalized Adult Outside Of The Intensive Care Unit Setting, Cynthia S. Drapal Jan 2021

Oral Care Practice Guidelines For The Care-Dependent Hospitalized Adult Outside Of The Intensive Care Unit Setting, Cynthia S. Drapal

Dissertations

Many nurses lack evidence-based knowledge to deliver appropriate oral care, view oral care in the care-dependent patient as a comfort measure, and give it a low clinical priority. An estimated 44%-65% of hospitalized care-dependent patients do not receive adequate oral care, an intervention that can prevent aspiration pneumonia or pneumonitis. The purpose of this project was to develop a policy for use of an oral assessment tool and evidence-based guidelines for oral care in hospitalized care-dependent adults outside of the intensive care unit setting at a regional health system in the Southeast United States. The project used the theoretical foundations …

Beyond Prognosis Communication: Exploring The Existential Dimensions Of Palliative Care Conversations With Adults With Advanced Cancer, Elise C. Tarbi Jan 2021

Beyond Prognosis Communication: Exploring The Existential Dimensions Of Palliative Care Conversations With Adults With Advanced Cancer, Elise C. Tarbi

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports

Prognosis communication appears to be one key mechanism to achieve the benefits of palliative care (Norton et al., 2013; Thomas et al., 2018). As prognosis communication entails confronting mortality, which can provoke existential concerns (Solomon, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski, 2015), the purpose of this project was to examine the existential dimensions of palliative care conversations involving prognosis communication. This purpose was accomplished through the following aims: (1) Describe how patients, families, and clinicians communicate about existential experience in palliative care conversations; and (2) Explore the intersection between prognosis communication and existential dimensions of conversation.

Safely Prescribing Opioids For Chronic Pain In Primary Care Using Risk Mitigation Strategies, Mindy Howard

DNP and Student Works

Safely prescribing opioids in primary care for adults with chronic non-cancer related pain has become a cornerstone of fighting the current opioid epidemic. The statistics are alarming, with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reporting in 2018 that more than 40 people died daily from an overdose involving prescription opioids (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018). Health care providers wrote 249 million opioid prescriptions in 2013, making enough prescriptions for every adult American to have a bottle of pills (CDC, 2018). Risk mitigation strategies (RMS) provide lower risk prescribing practices, but providers need more significant education and engagement …

Dissertations

This study explores the perceptions of Directors of Nursing from NHS acute Trusts in England, on caring practices. The aspiration of the NHS is to deliver good care to patients and their families. The NHS constitution states that the 'NHS is there to improve health and wellbeing, and it touches our lives at times of basic human need, when care and compassion are what matter most' (DH 2013:2). However, recent inquiries into poor care have created a searching debate regarding standards of nursing care, leadership, culture and practice.
