Weight Status Among Prescription Opioid Users With Chronic Pain, Teresa Louise Bigand

Dissertations

Greater than 70% of the United States (US) adult population is overweight as defined by body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2. Adults who are overweight are more likely to report chronic pain than those with recommended weight status. Additionally, higher BMI is correlated with poorer pain outcomes. Patients with chronic pain and overweight status report difficulty self-managing pain and weight and are commonly prescribed opioid medications to treat pain. Long-term use of prescription opioids is associated with negative health outcomes, especially among adults with overweight status. Adults with chronic pain report many health symptoms that hinder pain and …

Simultaneous Experiences Of Type 2 Diabetes And Symptoms Of Depression And/Or Anxiety Among Latina Women 60 And Older, Adrienne S. Martinez-Hollingsworth

Dissertations

Latina older adult women disproportionately suffer from type 2 diabetes (diabetes) and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. These disease states are associated with serious declines in health outcomes and a three-fold reduction in treatment compliance. Few studies have examined this phenomenon exclusively among Latina older adult women or have captured the impact of intersectional identity on their experiences, values or problem-solving methods related to self-management.

The purpose of this study was to examine how Latina women, 60 and over, emotionally experience both diabetes and interactions with care providers during help-seeking and care engagement.

Evaluating The Impact Of Innovative Teaching Strategies To Improve Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Competence And Confidence In Providing Spiritual And Emotional Care, Palmira A. Good

Dissertations

Nurses are expected to respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients with compassionate care. Patients yearn for a connection with their nurse that assures them they are safe and will be provided with holistic care. A healing environment can be established for the patient by providing spiritual and emotional care. Many practicing nurses state they are uncomfortable addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of their patients. A gap exists between what is taught to nursing students and the expectations of nurses in the clinical setting. Students' perceptions of their confidence and competence in providing spiritual care to patients …

Developing New Prognostic Models For Predicting Outcomes In Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Kwankaew Wongchareon Sep 2021

Developing New Prognostic Models For Predicting Outcomes In Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Kwankaew Wongchareon

Dissertations

Globally, the annual incidence rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in all ages is 349 per 100,000 person-years. The incidence of TBI varies across regions, populations, regulations, and health systems; but in general, the rate is expected to be higher in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). As LMICs usually have poor pre-hospital care, delays in patient transfer, lack of facilities and well-trained staff; these make the burden of TBI more devastating and a pressing public health issue. In this dissertation, we focused on several approaches to determine the value of prognostic research in adult patients with severe TBI, test model …

In the United States, it is estimated that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which greatly increases the risk of many adverse health conditions, affects over 25 million adults with prevalence rates that have drastically increased over the last two decades, likely due to the obesity epidemic. Research has identified several explanatory variables of OSA, but studies have indicated that OSA incidence and severity is mainly determined by three variables: gender, weight and age.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects and importance of gender, weight, and age on OSA levels (as measured by respiratory disturbance index (RDI) values) …

A Description Of Cultural Humility As Perceived By Nursing Faculty In Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Linda Webster Aug 2021

A Description Of Cultural Humility As Perceived By Nursing Faculty In Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Linda Webster

Dissertations

In diverse populations, health inequities can exist, thereby contributing to health disparities. A lack of knowledge regarding unfamiliar cultural patterns and practices by health care providers can contribute to miscommunication and mistrust. The willingness to adopt the practices of self-awareness and self-reflection with critique is cultural humility. This concept may help to reduce health inequities and suboptimal health outcomes when a mutual respect for culture and diversity is present.

A foundational, qualitative descriptive study was proposed to investigate cultural humility as perceived by nursing faculty. The purpose of this study was to describe the concept of cultural humility from the …

Male Nurses' Experiences Of Gender Stereotyping Over The Past Five Decades: A Narrative Approach, Michael W. Finnegan

Dissertations

Negative stereotyping of men in nursing has been a chronic problem that has a direct effect on males and detracts from efforts to recruit and retain them. At this time in American history (2018), traditionally male-dominated professions are making significant progress toward the goal of a gender-balanced workplace. However, the opposite is not true. Traditionally female-dominated professions are not attracting or appealing to men. In the nursing profession, the number of male nurses is relatively small and has remained relatively fixed over time. Estimates vary between 6-15 percent, with the current average being approximately 11 percent (American Nurses Association, 2014). …
