An Examination Of Freshman Non-Nursing Students' Attitude Toward Nursing As A Career Choice For Males In The Southeastern United States, Tiffany Gordon Cox Nov 2021

An Examination Of Freshman Non-Nursing Students' Attitude Toward Nursing As A Career Choice For Males In The Southeastern United States, Tiffany Gordon Cox

Dissertations

The nursing shortage is predicted to continue into the year of 2030. Governmental and nongovernmental healthcare stakeholders have recognized a key factor in decreasing the shortage is to increase the recruitment and retention of males in nursing. The United States has a workforce comprising 3.5 million nurses. Yet, males represent only 9% of the working nurses in the United States. To decrease the nursing shortage, males must be a part of the equation. Male patients typically feel more comfortable discussing certain conditions, especially those related to sexual and reproductive health with other men than with women. Male nurses add to …

Bridging The Gap: Using Simultaneous Multi-Patient Simulations To Improve Nursing Competency And Transition To Practice: A Causal-Comparative Inquiry, Julie Fomenko Nov 2021

Bridging The Gap: Using Simultaneous Multi-Patient Simulations To Improve Nursing Competency And Transition To Practice: A Causal-Comparative Inquiry, Julie Fomenko

Dissertations

Twenty-first-century healthcare is a complex and demanding arena. Today's hospital environment is more complex than in previous years while patients move through the system at a much faster pace. Newly graduated nurses are challenged in their first year with the healthcare needs of complex patients. Nurse educators and nurse leaders differ in opinions regarding the readiness of newly licensed nurses. Despite these opposing views, there is no argument that today's hospitalized patients need expert nurses to care for them. This study explores the development of competence in newly graduated nurses using simultaneous multi-patient simulations (SMPS).

The Effect Of An Unfolding Case Study On Critical Thinking, Knowledge Acquisition, And Handoff Communication In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Antionella M. Upshaw Nov 2021

The Effect Of An Unfolding Case Study On Critical Thinking, Knowledge Acquisition, And Handoff Communication In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Antionella M. Upshaw

Dissertations

Miscommunication during handoffs at time of transition for the older adult patient often results in hospital readmissions, penalties and nursing malpractice. Handoff communication (HOC) is a necessary and critical factor in patient safety; therefore, it is imperative that nurses be educated and trained in how to communicate essential geriatric patient data, minimize errors and ensure continuity of care. Nursing researchers report that HOC is a critical responsibility and varies in educational methods creating a latent patient safety risk. The unfolding case study (UCS) is increasingly being used to promote critical thinking and improve communication but lack of evidence to guide …

Using An Asynchronous Open Source Platform For Leadership Education, Sandie Nadelson, Kelley Conner, Louis Nadelson, Rebecca Gray, Keitha Griffith

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Online simulation is an effective means to develop nursing students and essential as COVID has restricted in-person training. However, creating high-quality simulations with little training or expensive software has been limiting. So, when our group learned about an open-source site available for asynchronous simulation sponsored by MIT, we decided to utilize this in our undergraduate leadership course with hopes of expanding its use.

Impact Of Communication Training On Nurses' Verbal And Nonverbal Skills And Patient Satisfaction, Edna Trepanier Nov 2021

Impact Of Communication Training On Nurses' Verbal And Nonverbal Skills And Patient Satisfaction, Edna Trepanier

Dissertations

Effective nurse communication correlates with favorable patient experiences and outcomes. Communication training programs are insufficient, although they do improve nurses' communication skills. The purpose of this quantitative, pretest-posttest quasiexperimental study was to examine the impact of a communication training intervention on nurses' perceptions of verbal and nonverbal skills, patient satisfaction with nurses' communication, and the overall rating of the hospital. The Nurse Self-report Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Skills Survey (NSVNCSS) was the tool employed to collect data from 103 nurses to investigate the changes in nurses' perception of their own verbal and nonverbal scores from pretest to posttest.

Heart Failure Family Caregivers: Psychometrics Of A New Quality Of Life Scale And Variables Associated With Caregiver Outcomes, Julie Ann Nauser

Dissertations

The number of patients with chronic heart failure (HF) is at an all-time high and the incidence is expected to increase as our population ages. HF patients experience impaired cognition, exertional shortness of breath, and persistent fatigue; therefore, family members are needed to assist with their care at home. Although existing literature suggests that HF caregivers experience negative physical, mental, and social outcomes, there is a lack of studies guided by a conceptual model to determine factors associated with these outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine factors associated with HF caregiver depressive symptoms, life changes, and quality …

Processes Used By Nursing Faculty When Working With Underperforming Students In The Clinical Area: A Theoretical Model Derived From Grounded Theory, Marianne Craven

Dissertations

Clinical nursing faculty members often work with students who underperform in the clinical area. Underperforming students are those who exhibit deficits in nursing knowledge, the application of nursing knowledge, psychomotor skills, motivation, and/or interpersonal skills. The outcomes of faculty work with underperforming students have implications for patient safety and the nursing workforce, yet little is known about how faculty work with underperforming students. The purpose of this project was to develop a theoretical framework that describes how clinical faculty work with underperforming students in the clinical area.

Ready Or Not: Examining The Efficacy Of The Academic Preparation Of Bsn Students And Readiness To Enter Practice, Kathleen Anne Diatta Oct 2021

Ready Or Not: Examining The Efficacy Of The Academic Preparation Of Bsn Students And Readiness To Enter Practice, Kathleen Anne Diatta

Dissertations

The concept of critical thinking (CT) has perplexed employers and researchers in the field of nursing for decades. The nursing profession is under intense pressure to hire clinicians who exhibit CT skills. A review of the literature has shown that the divide between bedside clinicians and nursing faculty has led to the separation of academic educators from clinical practices. As a result, new graduates come into the clinical setting inadequately prepared to meet the clinical demands of today's hospitalized patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of new graduate nurses from a Baccalaureate program and their …

The State Of Missed Nursing Care In A Telemetry Nursing Unit: A Descriptive Case Study, Ann Marie Svolos

Dissertations

Missed nursing care in the acute hospital setting is care left undone. Omitted, missing and even rationed care, are not new concepts in nursing practice. However, in 2006 Dr. Beatrice Kalisch formally identified the type of care that is regularly missed in acute general hospital units and the reasons missed nursing care occurs. Missed nursing care is a problem for nursing and healthcare because it may lead to negative patient and staff outcomes which may result in harm. The purpose of the research was to understand missed nursing care from a telemetry nurse's perspective to learn how it continues to …

Transgender Education In Nursing: A Qualitative Study Investigating Faculty Beliefs, Vanessa A. Pomarico-Denino

Dissertations

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) is an acronym that groups together four populations under one umbrella term. Each of these populations has their own distinct and unique health care needs. Transgender persons may present their gender differently than what is considered the societal norm. As a result, they are more prone to discrimination, harassment and acts of violence than other marginalized populations. Prior experiences with health care professionals may cause transgender persons to avoid seeking health care when needed. As more persons identify as transgender, the need to educate health care providers on the appropriate and sensitive care of …

Evaluation Of A School Nurse-Led Intervention For Children With Severe Obesity In New York City Schools, Krista Schroeder Oct 2021

Evaluation Of A School Nurse-Led Intervention For Children With Severe Obesity In New York City Schools, Krista Schroeder

Dissertations

Severe childhood obesity, the fastest growing subcategory of childhood obesity, affects 4-6% of youth. Children from racial/ethnic minority groups and low income households are disproportionately affected. Severe obesity increases risk for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, musculoskeletal problems, poor health-related quality of life, bullying, low self-worth, absenteeism, and adult obesity. One method of addressing childhood obesity is through school-based interventions. School nurses may be well-suited to lead obesity interventions because of their healthcare expertise, long-term relationships with students and families, and availability to students without financial burden.
