Through The Looking Glass: The Lived Experiences Of Deaf People Communicating With Nurses, The Meaning Of Health, And Attitudes Toward Nurses, Kathleen Lenore Gilchrist Jan 2022

Through The Looking Glass: The Lived Experiences Of Deaf People Communicating With Nurses, The Meaning Of Health, And Attitudes Toward Nurses, Kathleen Lenore Gilchrist

Dissertations

Approximately three million deaf people in the United States represent a significant portion of our population whose health care may be compromised from ambiguous communication. Written and spoken English is commonly used by nurses to convey health information, although American Sign Language (ASL) is the Deaf community's primary language. When a deaf person enters the hospital, communication is tenuous because of illness, unfamiliar environment, and medical terminology. The purpose of this research was to describe and interpret prevocationally deaf people's experiences communicating with nurses, the meaning of health, and their attitudes toward nurses.

The Relationship Between Nursing Students' Test-Taking Motivation And The Exit Examination Score, Lorraine Coalmer Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Nursing Students' Test-Taking Motivation And The Exit Examination Score, Lorraine Coalmer

Dissertations

A primary objective of nursing students and nursing programs includes first-time success on the NCLEX-RN®. As the nursing shortage continues, it is essential to have qualified nursing graduates pass the NCLEX-RN ®. One approach some nursing programs have chosen to implement regarding augmenting nursing students' probability of success on the NCLEX-RN® includes the administration of an exit examination. This exit examination is tailored to mimic the NCLEX-RN® blueprint; thereby this examination may reveal the nursing students' readiness for the NCLEX-RN®.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between nursing student test-taking motivation and exit …

Examining The Relationship Among Civic Attitudes, Civic Engagement Behaviors, And A Sense Of Community In A Sample Of Nurses, Catherine Rewakowski Jan 2022

Examining The Relationship Among Civic Attitudes, Civic Engagement Behaviors, And A Sense Of Community In A Sample Of Nurses, Catherine Rewakowski

Dissertations

Nurses are called to advocate for those they serve, and civic engagement is a way to advocate for health-related issues. However, there is sparse evidence of frequency and types of civic activities in which professional nurses engage. A review of literature found that sense of community and civic attitudes are constructs shown to influence civic participation but are not well-studied among professional nurses. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of civic engagement among nurses by examining civic engagement activities and factors that influence engagement.

Preparing Prelicensure Nursing Students For Workplace Violence: A Limit Setting Education Module, Maychao Michelle Yang Jan 2022

Preparing Prelicensure Nursing Students For Workplace Violence: A Limit Setting Education Module, Maychao Michelle Yang

Theses

In the hospital setting, de-escalation training has become a very important method of preventing workplace violence against nurses and other healthcare workers. While nurses are now required to complete workplace violence prevention training, there is no guarantee that nurses who complete the training have the communication skills needed during the de-escalation process with disruptive or aggressive patients. In prelicensure nursing programs, key skills in deescalation training such as limit setting could form a solid foundation for any further training provided in the hospital setting. An online educational module on the topic of limit setting with patients and visitors was created …

The Lived Experience Of Observant Jewish Nursing Students: A Phenomenological Study, Toby Bressler Jan 2022

The Lived Experience Of Observant Jewish Nursing Students: A Phenomenological Study, Toby Bressler

Dissertations

With expanding cultural diversity in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2009), it is essential to increase the diversity of the nursing profession to match the patients who are being cared for in our healthcare system (IOM, 2003; Sullivan Commission, 2004). Despite improvements to the demographic composition of the nursing workforce in recent decades, the nursing workforce has remained predominantly homogeneous and to meet the current and future health needs of the public while providing culturally relevant care, the nursing workforce needs to increase its diversity (IOM, 2010). This demographic shift creates a social imperative that …

Female Coping With Cardiac Rehabilitation After A Cardiac Event: A Qualitative Study, Patricia B. Quigley Jan 2022

Female Coping With Cardiac Rehabilitation After A Cardiac Event: A Qualitative Study, Patricia B. Quigley

Dissertations

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women. Cardiac rehabilitation can reduce cardiac risk, but women underutilize cardiac rehabilitation. Research has not described how women who do participate cope with integrating cardiac rehabilitation into their lives. The purpose of this research study was to explore women's coping with a Phase II (12-week) cardiac rehabilitation program by analyzing interview data for common elements and other ways of coping. A secondary purpose was to explore to what extent the women's descriptions in their interviews corresponded with Lazarus' theoretical concepts of appraisal and coping.

Taking Responsibility: Toward An Understanding Of Morality In Practice. An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Social Construction Of Responsibility In The Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Pamela K. Bjorklund

Dissertations

Although the nursing literature overflows with references to the myriad things for which nurses and patients are de facto responsible, nurses have never explicitly examined the social construction of responsibility in any clinical context. This ethnographic investigation of a unique, 10-bed residential treatment facility for women diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) sought to identify, describe, and understand the social processes by which a particular mental health treatment community constructed responsibility. Consistent with feminist naturalism and informed by the feminist moral philosophy of Margaret Urban Walker (1998), this study utilized the naturalistic field methodology of Schatzman and Strauss (1973) and …

Perceptions Of Community Of Associate Degree Nurse Learners In An Rn-To-Bsn Online Program, Cherie R. Rebar

Dissertations

Registered Nurses (RNs), when educated in an Associate Degree (AD) program, learn in a face-to-face environment. Today's preferred standard of education for RNs is to achieve a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. For convenience while they continue working, numerous AD-prepared nurses seek online education to complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, yet have never studied in this type of learning environment, nor have they learned to forge educational relationships in a virtual setting. At the time that this study was proposed, limited research existed that studied how BSN students perceive this forum, and how it affects their …

Adoptive Parents' Lived Experience Of Bonding With Their Adopted Infants: A Phenomenological Study, Sharon M. Bator

Dissertations

Nurses' roles facilitating bonding between adoptive parents and their infants have been premised on the idea that the experience is the same as for biological parents. Developmental theorists Bowlby (1969) and Erikson (1959) maintained that bonding between an adoptive parent and their adopted child is essential for normal growth and development. The purpose of this study was to study the experience of bonding between adoptive parents and children.

A Nationally Representative Survey Of Depression Symptoms Among Jordanian Adolescents: Associations With Depression Stigma, Depression Etiological Beliefs, And Likelihood To Seek Help For Depression, Latefa Ali Dardas

Dissertations

Arab adolescents are considered a particularly vulnerable population to depression. The substantial lack of mental health services and the stigma associated with mental illness on the one hand; and poverty, unemployment, and lack of reasonable hopes for a decent future in the context of corruption of regimes and perceived social injustice on the other, call for establishing committed and effective policies to tackle depression and its associated stigma among Arab adolescents at risk for or diagnosed with depression. However, there is a substantial lack of research that can inform the current profile of adolescent depression in the Arab region. We …

Informing Effective Simulation Pedagogy In Nursing Simulation, Sherry L. Barnard Dec 2021

Informing Effective Simulation Pedagogy In Nursing Simulation, Sherry L. Barnard

Dissertations

Simulation methods are now widely used in nursing education programs. Several studies have been conducted that examine the effect of simulation on student outcomes in learning (Alinier, Hunt, Gordon, & Harwood, 2006; Arnold, et al, 2009; Rosen, Salas, Silvestri, Wu, & Lazzara, 2008), however, little has been discovered regarding models of faculty support and guidance during simulation. The factors that influence student learning in the simulation experience suggest faculty be a guide by offering cueing and support before, during, and after the simulation process (Parsh, Roberts, & Green, 2010). It is also suggested that debriefing be non-judgmental and a time …
