Prep Initiation In The Primary Care Setting: An Integrative Review, Tia L. Harper, Sharon Leslie
Prep Initiation In The Primary Care Setting: An Integrative Review, Tia L. Harper, Sharon Leslie
DNP and Student Works
Guideline-driven initiation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a safe and effective strategy for reducing the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Yet, PrEP initiation is generally inadequate allowing for a persistently high HIV prevalence in the United States. The aims of this integrative review were to identify and examine barriers contributing to suboptimal PrEP prescribing by primary care providers (PCPs), establish which practice-based intervention(s) are most effective in improving PCP PrEP prescribing practices, and guide implementation of such intervention(s) via hypothetical case study provision. Review objectives were intended to result in answering how implementing practice-based interventions affects PCP PrEP prescribing …

Examination Of Badges To Increase Nursing Student Engagement: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Sharon C. Moritz
Dissertations
Finding ways to help nursing students understand the application of didactic content can be challenging for faculty. One challenge faculty face is motivating students with thought provoking and memorable content using traditional methods. Educational games and gaming attributes have been shown to affect student motivation and support learning. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge, filling a knowledge gap, regarding which gaming attributes motivate nursing students to become engaged in course content that is not graded. Badges were used as a reward system to examine if nursing students would complete an increased number of non-graded case studies, and …

Caregivers Of A Child With Autism In South Florida: A Phenomenological Study, Marline Whigham
Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is now well known and is being diagnosed more frequently than years ago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2017, the combined estimated prevalence of ASD is 14.6 per 1,000 (1 in 68). Estimated prevalence among children age 8 was significantly higher among boys (23.6 per 1,000). ASD is a complicated and challenging disorder for every caregiver, health care providers, schools, and the overall community. However, caregivers of children with ASD receive little support. Little is known about what support is available for caregivers; not much research is available on how to …

Nursing Patterns Of Knowing In Assessment Of Newborn Sepsis, Lorraine B. Rubarth
Dissertations
Sepsis is a devastating, life-threatening disease and a major problem for many newborns; it develops rapidly and requires expertise to identify the early, subtle signs to prevent death or disability. Evidence from nursing practice and philosophic inquiry indicates that nurses use diverse ways of knowing in their assessments. The purpose of this research was to address research questions concerning two areas: 1) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses' patterns of knowing in the assessment of infants with sepsis as related to dimensions of nursing practice; and 2) Test the psychometric properties of the Newborn Scale of Sepsis (SOS) as a …

Dissertations
Chronic illness is common in older adults and is associated with functional impairments. Older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) face both age-related and disease-related decline in pulmonary function. Dyspnea, also referred to as shortness of breath, is a major symptom in COPD and progressive dyspnea is associated with decline in physical function. Aging, chronic illness and a decline in physical function can compromise the individual's confidence, also known as self-efficacy, for performing physical activities. Chronic disease self-management programs for COPD that include an exercise program have been reported to improve functional status, decrease dyspnea and improve self-efficacy for …

Factors Affecting Self-Efficacy In Caregivers Of Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Megan C. Hebdon
Factors Affecting Self-Efficacy In Caregivers Of Latina Breast Cancer Survivors, Megan C. Hebdon
Dissertations
Informal caregivers provide the bulk of care to individuals with chronic diseases, including cancer. There were 2.8 million informal caregivers of cancer survivors in the United States in 2015. Informal caregivers are vulnerable to poor physical and emotional consequences related to their caregiving role. Caregivers of Latina breast cancer survivors have additional risks related to social determinants of health, which may be attenuated through increased caregiver self-efficacy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate a moderating model of self-efficacy in caregivers of Latina breast cancer survivors between acculturation, spiritual wellbeing, and social support and global health and depression.

This study examined how traditional and Ericksonian hypnotherapeutic support groups facilitated self defined health promoting goals and power as knowing participation in change for 49 participants with chronic physical illness.
Exploration Of Two Methodologies For Measuring Clinical Judgment In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Marlene W. Call
Exploration Of Two Methodologies For Measuring Clinical Judgment In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Marlene W. Call
Dissertations
Senior nursing students need a requisite level of preparedness to safely care for an acutely ill, complex patient once they graduate and become independent clinicians. This level of preparedness may be evaluated by measuring clinical judgment (CJ) with the Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric (LCJR). The LCJR contains 11 indicators that represent the actions and behaviors necessary for demonstrating CJ. Two methods of simulation, high fidelity patient simulation (HFPS) and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), replicate the healthcare environment so students may safely demonstrate clinical skills without harming an actual patient. The purposes of this study were to 1) explore the …

The Lived Experience Of Veteran Medics Entering A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, June L. Llerena
Dissertations
In 2017, 755,479 veterans received Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to attend higher education (VA, 2018). For many returning veterans a rapid transition from military life to student life not only creates academic barriers but also increases stress (Bagby et al., 2015). Studies focusing on transition found 51% of Post 9/11 veterans experienced difficulty transitioning into civilian life (Anderson & Goodman, 2014). Additionally, combat veterans have reported experiencing greater social isolation and emotional struggles compared to non-combat veterans (Bagby et al., 2015). Schonfeld et al. (2015) studied general student veterans and found that: 34.5 % had severe anxiety, 23.7% had …

The Relationship Among Maternal Characteristics, Maternal Dietary Self-Regulation, And The Dietary Intake And Body Weight Status Of Two To Five-Year-Old Children, Andrea Bushaw
Dissertations
Eating preferences and practices are established early in life, yet we have little knowledge about how mothers make food decisions on behalf of their children. These decisions, however, lay the foundation for their child's lifelong food preferences and eating behaviors. Almost one-third of all children in the U.S. are overweight or obese putting them at high risk for becoming an overweight or obese adult. To make a difference in the ongoing obesity epidemic, we must better understand the relationship among characteristics of the mother who controls the young child's access to food, food choices, and feeding practices. This knowledge will …

Improving Nurse Mentor Retention Through The Use Of Nurse Residency Programs, Morgan Newman
Improving Nurse Mentor Retention Through The Use Of Nurse Residency Programs, Morgan Newman
Dissertations
Graduate nurses beginning their nursing career require a collaborative relationship with an expert nurse mentor to make this transition successful. However, high turnover among these experienced nurse mentors is causing a problematic gap in knowledge transfer, experience, and expertise in the nursing workforce. This project investigated whether nurse mentors who mentored in a Nurse Residency Program (NRP) remained with the organization longer and were more satisfied with their mentoring experience than nurse mentors who mentored outside of a NRP. The diffusion of innovations theory was used to support the project and process of dispersing information on the outcome of the …

Instruments used to measure study concepts included the Piper Fatigue Scale to evaluate fatigue; a researcher developed Physical …
Influence Of Perceived Parental Alcoholism, Stimuli, Coping, And Adaptation On Children's Alcohol Consumption, Angelica Susana López Arellano, Karla Selene López García, Frederickson Keville, Rosa MaríA Díaz Hurtado
Influence Of Perceived Parental Alcoholism, Stimuli, Coping, And Adaptation On Children's Alcohol Consumption, Angelica Susana López Arellano, Karla Selene López García, Frederickson Keville, Rosa MaríA Díaz Hurtado
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
When parents (father and/or mother) present problematic alcohol consumption in the family, their children usually have negative health responses, affecting their lives; however, not all of these children present these negative responses. In Mexico there are regulations, norms and health programs that protect adolescents from alcohol consumption because they are minors, but despite this, the prevalence of alcohol consumption in them continues to rise and the onset of alcohol consumption occurs at increasingly younger ages, so it is important to study the family variables that influence alcohol consumption and their lives, especially those of the parents.
