Gamification And The Effects On Confidence In The Student Nurse, Gerald R. Connors

DNP and Student Works

Nursing educators are challenged with conveying vast amounts of complex nursing arts and science content to learners every day. The relationship between learner and nursing educator should be one of collaboration to ensure the smooth instruction of broad and deep nursing concepts. Knowledge acquisition, confidence, learner engagement and enjoyment are critical to the learning process, but often students are challenged with these behaviors (Garrison et al., 2021). Research in the last five years has suggested that the use of gaming in the nongaming setting, like clinical healthcare, can strengthen knowledge, increase content retention, and subsequently increase confidence (Marquez-Hernandez et al., …

The Effects Of Resilience And Optimism In Maternal Role Attainment After Six To Twelve Months Postpartum In Women Hospitalized For Pregnancy Complications, Marianne Allen

Dissertations

Each year in the US, approximately 1,200,000 pregnant women are hospitalized on bed rest with the intent to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, antepartum bed rest is not benign and may contribute to physical debilitation, postpartum depression (PPD), impaired maternal role attainment (MRA), and altered maternal-infant attachment. There are gaps in the literature about the effects of resilience, optimism, and PPD on MRA and the effects of resilience and optimism on PPD at six to 12 months postpartum. Although the effects of resilience and optimism have been studied in general adult populations, few studies have considered resilience and optimism as protectors …

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

The patient in this case study presented to a rural surgical clinic in Guatemala for surgery with characteristics of a probable difficult airway. In the United States, anesthesia providers will often use a video laryngoscope (VL) to manage an expected difficult airway requiring an endotracheal tube. However, many barriers exist towards this technology being adopted as common practice in low-middle income countries (LMICs) like Guatemala. These barriers include financial resources, education, and training. Thankfully, the Air Angel Project, a medical nonprofit, has designed the AirAngel Blade: a 3D printed VL blade equipped for use with a commercially available endoscope and …

Catheter-Guided Nasotracheal Intubation And Incidence Of Trauma, Rachel Land, David Fort Jan 2024

Catheter-Guided Nasotracheal Intubation And Incidence Of Trauma, Rachel Land, David Fort

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

The presented case study details a 17-year-old patient undergoing a dental procedure requiring nasotracheal intubation (NTI). A red rubber catheter was utilized to assist with endotracheal tube placement. The nasal cavity contains highly vascular turbinates that can be injured during NTI. Even minor trauma can cause epistaxis, making it the most prominent complication of NTI. Catheter-guided NTI is one technique suggested to reduce nasal trauma. Does catheter-guided versus non-catheter-guided NTI reduce the risk of nasal bleeding or swelling in adult patients without a known risk of a difficult airway within the perioperative timeframe?

Hypotension Management In Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension, Braden Clark, Nancy Westbrook Jan 2024

Hypotension Management In Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension, Braden Clark, Nancy Westbrook

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

The patient in the case study presents with diagnosed pulmonary hypertension (PH). Patients experiencing daily hypoxia from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have similar pulmonary vascular remodeling found in pulmonary hypertension patients creating pulmonary hypertension. Common to the induction of anesthesia is episodic hypotension. When the patient with PH or OSA are administered phenylephrine for hypotension, the non-specific systemic vasoconstriction will worsen PH. Vasopressin will increase systemic vascular resistance while decreasing pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular afterload. Vasopressin should be considered as a first-line agent in the patient with PH or OSA experiencing perioperative hypotension.
