Transitional Care Medical House Call: A Pilot Project, Ron Billano Ordona
Transitional Care Medical House Call: A Pilot Project, Ron Billano Ordona
Dissertations
Vulnerable, homebound older adults are highly susceptible to unplanned 30-day hospital readmissions, which is costly for the healthcare system. As a result, health care expenditures for this population continue to rise. Studies have shown that transition of care programs, when complemented with home-based primary care delivery, may improve health care outcomes for this population.
The purpose of this quality improvement pilot project was to implement medical house calls as a component of transitional care management (TCM) and measure patient outcomes such as unplanned 30-day readmission rates and correlate predictors of readmission. As a secondary outcome, the project explored, tracked, and …
Improving Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Self-Efficacy Intervention With Primiparous Mothers, Karen A. Mcqueen
Improving Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Of A Self-Efficacy Intervention With Primiparous Mothers, Karen A. Mcqueen
Dissertations
Breastfeeding is recommended as the optimal source of nutrition for newborns for the first 6 months of life and beyond with the addition of complementary foods. While breastfeeding initiation rates have been increasing, duration rates remain a concern as many women prematurely discontinue due to difficulties encountered rather than maternal choice. In addition, there is a sizable gap between rates of exclusive breastfeeding and current recommendations. Targeting modifiable variables that may be amenable to intervention is one strategy to improve breastfeeding outcomes. One such modifiable variable is breastfeeding self-efficacy. Although research has clearly shown that breastfeeding self-efficacy is predictive of …

Education Practicum Project, Chinwe Uzodinma-Jones
Theses
Implementation of IDSE promotes interprofessional communication by exposing scholars to such experiences prior to entering professional practice (Aebersold, 2018; Wang et al., 2015). Further inquiry has led to the development of the PICOT research question. In a population of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing scholars (Population) what is the effect of an interdisciplinary simulation-based education (IDSE) scenario (Intervention) in comparison to no IDSE (Comparison) on improving self-perceptions of competent care among critical care nursing students (Outcome) over a period of 8 weeks (Time)?
Using Therapeutic Writing To Deconstruct Recovery From Postraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Pamela Phillips
Using Therapeutic Writing To Deconstruct Recovery From Postraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Pamela Phillips
Dissertations
Exposure to physical and psychological trauma has produced a post-millennial epoch of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a debilitating anxiety disorder that occurs after exposure to an extreme stressor or prolonged victimization. After an extensive review of treatment protocols in 2008, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) exhorted clinicians to focus on defining the concept of recovery, concentrating on symptom reduction, removal of the PTSD diagnosis, and end-state function. Although the IOM report mobilized large-scale efforts to quantify treatments and standardize delivery of treatment protocols, PTSD recovery remains a concept that has been largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was …
Improving The Experience Of Culturally Diverse Nursing Students: A Qualitative Study, Miriam L. Griffin
Improving The Experience Of Culturally Diverse Nursing Students: A Qualitative Study, Miriam L. Griffin
Dissertations
Current literature reflects a need for an overall increase in the number of nurses and an increase in ethnic and racial diversity in the nursing profession. The lack of diversity is a global nursing concern, and nursing programs and educators are tasked with attempting to recruit, retain, and graduate culturally diverse students. The literature and research discuss the need for nursing programs and educators to design early intervention success programs and pre-nursing preparation that focus on critical factors that contribute to student success and assist with decreasing attrition rates. In this basic qualitative research study, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted …

Increasing Folic Acid Self-Efficacy In College-Age Women Of Childbearing Age, Kristie Buchanan
Increasing Folic Acid Self-Efficacy In College-Age Women Of Childbearing Age, Kristie Buchanan
Dissertations
Preventative measures taken by women of childbearing age before and during conception limit the risk of fetal defects or complications. One specific measure that is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is that all women of childbearing age take folic acid 400 mcg daily. Evidence-based research suggests that taking 400 mcg daily limits the risk of fetal neural tube defects if taken daily and started at least two months before conception. Fetal neural tube defects are classified as defects that damage the baby's spine and brain. The researcher conducted an evidence-based practice project that sought to determine …

Increasing The Usage Of Mychart Bedside By Nurses And Patients In The Acute Care Setting: An Integrative Review, Laura Darnell
Dissertations
Teach-back has been a proven model to teach patients about their disease process, medications, or dressing changes in a simple-to-understand language that often includes a return demonstration. Teach-Back isn't just a tool to be used with patients, it can be used to help anyone understand something new. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model, people are less inclined to use new technology if they do not find it easy to use or useful in their day-to-day jobs. This integrative review aims to support the use of the Teach-Back method of instruction with staff, including return demonstration, to prove the ease of …

On Pills And Needles: Students' And Clinical Nursing Faculty's Lived Experience Of A Nursing Students' First Med Pass In The Clinical Setting, Cindy K. Paradiso
Dissertations
Learning and teaching medication administration is a substantial component of prelicensure nursing education. The emphasis of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses initiative is to prepare nursing students to provide safe, quality care. Medication administration, which falls under this initiative, is a challenge for nursing students to learn and for clinical nursing faculty to teach. Consequently, nursing students graduate feeling unprepared to administer medications in their practice. This issue is prevalent and long-standing within nursing education. Most of the research studies conducted, though, are from senior nursing students and nurses. There is little research from the beginner nursing student …

Dissertations
COVID-19 has dramatically changed human-to-human interactions from in-person to the nonhuman domain of virtual space. In January 2021, every 28 seconds one person died of COVID-19 in the United States. An average of 3,100 Americans died each day during the deadliest month of the pandemic. As of January 2023, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the USA surpassed 1.000.000 people. In hospitals, human-to-human interactions were often limited to seeing one's eyes behind the face shields, and respirator masks, and hearing a muffled voice, or sounds of the ventilators. In New York State 452 nurses died during the pandemic.
What does …

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports
The purpose of this study was to explore how tenured Black nursing faculty described the challenges, barriers, feelings, and success(es) they experienced when they worked to earn tenure and identify strategies to that may be used to help eradicate racial inequities in nursing education. There is a call for increased diversity in nursing education. However, anecdotal evidence indicates tenure-track Black nursing faculty may be denied tenure or leave academia before submitting their tenure dossier. To recruit and retain Black nursing faculty and support racial equity in higher education, Black faculty need support in achieving tenure and promotion.

Uncovering The Lifeworlds Of College Students Who Are Food Insecure: An Interpretive Phenomenological Inquiry, Amber L. Kolesar
Dissertations
Food insecurity (FI) is a concern for many college students, and contributes to significant physical, mental, and academic stressors. Experts have described the need for qualitative research. A better understanding of the experience of FI among college students may help to inform future research and interventions to support students on their educational journey. This study sought to interpret the lived experience of FI, with specific focus on the sociocultural context in which students experience FI, and its' contributing factors. Incorporating the philosophical perspective of Merleau-Ponty, the researcher utilized interpretive phenomenological analysis to uncover the life-worlds of food-insecure college students.

Understanding Social Determinants Of Healthcare Access From The Perspective Of Hispanic Latino Immigrants In Louisville, Ky, Jean S. Edward
Understanding Social Determinants Of Healthcare Access From The Perspective Of Hispanic Latino Immigrants In Louisville, Ky, Jean S. Edward
Dissertations
In the last decade, the total foreign-born population in the U.S. has grown exponentially, with the Hispanic Latino immigrants (HLI) experiencing the greatest growth. The literature clearly identifies that HLI experience significant health disparities as a result of the negative impact of influential social determinants of health, such as access to healthcare services. Barriers to healthcare access among HLI are related to the access dimensions of accessibility, availability, affordability, and acceptability. Despite research on the barriers to healthcare for this population, issues of access from the perspective of immigrant community members are poorly understood. There is an increased need to …

Peer Collaborative Clinical Decision-Making In Virtual Reality Nursing Simualtion, Thye Peng Ngo
Peer Collaborative Clinical Decision-Making In Virtual Reality Nursing Simualtion, Thye Peng Ngo
Dissertations
In nursing education, it is common for students to collaborate and make decisions as a group in simulations. One of the vital nursing competencies is students' ability to make sound clinical judgments and decision-making in simulation. Teamwork among students in simulation significantly affects their critical thinking and clinical reasoning. However, how students collaborate and make decisions in simulation is a complex phenomenon and not well studied and understood. In addition, most existing decision-making frameworks, such as Tanner's Clinical Judgment Model and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, focus solely on individual decision-making. Alternatively, teamwork …
Nursing Faculty Experience With Current Retention Strategies And Interventions: A Qualitative Study, Monique Mccurvin
Nursing Faculty Experience With Current Retention Strategies And Interventions: A Qualitative Study, Monique Mccurvin
Dissertations
Nursing faculty shortage is a growing concern in the nursing profession. The effects of insufficient nursing faculty are the declining numbers of nursing students admitted to nursing schools. Nursing faculty shortage precipitates the nursing shortage and further threatens public health. Government and private agencies have implemented strategies to retain nursing faculty; however, it is imperative to understand how they respond to the strategies in place and if the strategies influence them to stay. To answer the research question and sub-questions, what hygiene factors (for example physical/emotional work environment, interpersonal interactions, salary, job satisfaction, job security) influence experienced nurse educators' decision …
Exploring Evidence-Based Practice Norms Among Bedside Nurses In Magnet-Designated Hospitals: A Q Methodology Study, Rachel Ramsey
Exploring Evidence-Based Practice Norms Among Bedside Nurses In Magnet-Designated Hospitals: A Q Methodology Study, Rachel Ramsey
Dissertations
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a recognized standard of professional nursing due to its positive impact on care quality and patient outcomes. Despite ongoing efforts to maximize EBP at the point of care, current estimates indicate that only 30% of healthcare decisions are evidence-based. Individual and organizational factors are commonly identified for their influences on EBP in nursing, but group factors have been largely unexplored. Group-level factors, such as norms, are essential to investigations of phenomena that occur within multilevel organizations (i.e., hospitals) where individuals work in groups. Understanding the EBP norms that emerge among groups of nurses in direct care …

There is scant research on the experience of nurses practicing in mental health settings who use presence in the care they provide.
This research aims to understand the lived experience of nurses providing nursing care and engaging with presence in the mental health setting.
The Process Of Restoring Personal Integrity: Mitigating The Emotional Cost Of Medical Errors, Marie M. Prothero
The Process Of Restoring Personal Integrity: Mitigating The Emotional Cost Of Medical Errors, Marie M. Prothero
Dissertations
This constructivist grounded-theory study was conducted to explore the emotional response to and recovery process following a medical error causing harm to a patient. The study participants were 37 registered nurses (30 women and 7 men), and unstructured interviews provided rich, detailed data. Through an inductive analysis of these errors, a taxonomy of errors is proposed. The Circumstance of Error Model was developed, and five distinct error circumstances were identified: accidental, unanticipated, distracted, unrecognized/unknown, and external. By linking the circumstances of error types with the recovery process, new insights were obtained. These insights resulted in a theory, reestablishing competency, that …
