Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)

The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) affirms the right of each individual or couple who desire to use contraception to be able to do so. Barriers to obtaining and successfully using contraception must be eliminated, particularly for the most vulnerable individuals and populations. NPWH advocates for federal- and state-level policies that remove barriers and increase access to affordable, safe, and effective contraceptive methods for all reproductive-aged individuals. Multiple strategies involving legislation, regulations, consumer education, and innovation are necessary. Over-the-counter (OTC) access to hormonal contraceptives (HCs) and pharmacist-provided HCs are two specific strategies that can lower barriers …

Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)

The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) advocates for an intentional and concerted effort to improve human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates, with the goal of ending cancers caused by HPV. The use of strategies that increase parent/patient acceptance, reduce missed opportunities, promote affordability and accessibility for timely receipt, and ensure completion of the vaccination series are imperative. All nurse practitioners (NPs) who provide healthcare for adolescents and young adults are crucial to the success of this effort.< NPWH recognizes a need for and supports research to identify evidence-based practices that are effective in increasing HPV vaccination uptake, especially among populations currently identified as hard to reach and/or hesitant to accept vaccination. NPWH also supports quality improvement initiatives that are needed to put this evidence into practice and evaluate outcomes. NPWH provides leadership and collaborates with other organizations and agencies to offer education and resources needed for NPs to effectively promote and provide HPV vaccination.

Streamlining Time To Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gestational Diabetes, Catherine Cornish

Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)

Purpose/Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects approximately 240,000 pregnancies annually and is associated with maternal adverse events (hypertension, preeclampsia, polyhydramnios, preterm delivery) and neonatal complications (macrosomia, shoulder dystocia, and increased morbidity). Timely diagnosis and treatment improves outcomes. Traditionally, women without known diabetes have been screened at 24-28 weeks using a two-step procedure: a one-hour glucose challenge test and, if abnormal, followed by a fasting three-hour glucose tolerance test (GTT) on another day. Current literature and the American Diabetes Association support a one-step approach in which women are screened with a one-time fasting two-hour GTT. At our women's center, we observed …

Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)

The National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH), along with numerous other national health professional organizations, affirms that abortion is an essential component of comprehensive reproductive healthcare and that it should be legal, safe, and accessible. Legal restrictions do not eliminate abortion but instead increase the likelihood that abortions will be performed unsafely, with the potential for complications and death. Legislative and policy decisions should be firmly rooted in science, protect the patient-clinician relationship, and aim at reducing disparities to ensure equitable access to safe, effective, and timely abortion care.

People with low incomes, those living in rural …

Metacognition In Nurse Practitioner Students: How Nurse Educators Can Best Serve Students, Kathryn Holliday, Justin Waryold, Eric Rodriguez

Group: King International Nursing Group

The dynamic and changing healthcare environment requires educators to prepare nurse practitioner students with more than knowledge and skills. Healthcare providers need to be prepared with enhanced skills related to critical thinking and decision making. Metacognition training has been used by many disciplines within and outside of healthcare to prepare individuals to work in an environment that has volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, and delayed feedback (VUCAD). Metacognition training is rooted in cognitive theory. Cognitive theory strives to understand the relationship between an individual's thought processes and behavior. This retrospective exploratory study uses computerized strategic management simulation (SMS) data to address …

Applying A Nursing Theory To A Theory Of Resilience To Foster Healing And Recovery Post-Pandemic, Rothlyn P. Zahourek

Group: King International Nursing Group

How can nursing theories be used in the real world to address and combat the sequelae of the pandemic? Nurses have particularly suffered being continuously on the front line of exhausting and often heart breaking care of those with COVID-19. Resilience is understood as the psychological, physical, and spiritual capacity to cope with and integrate experiences of trauma and loss over time. The work of J.L. Griffith, The Hope Module (2017) can be compared and integrated with the nursing theory, Intentionality: the Matrix for Healing (IMH) (Zahourek, R.P. 2020) to foster interventions for recovery and healing from trauma. Intentionality is …

Workplace Violence During Covid-19: A Transaction Process For Nurse Retention, Amy Charlton, Ashley Wheeler Oct 2024

Workplace Violence During Covid-19: A Transaction Process For Nurse Retention, Amy Charlton, Ashley Wheeler

Group: King International Nursing Group

King's transaction process provides a framework for stakeholders including nurses, employers, and patients to set mutual goals that influence their individual and collective quality of life (2007). Healthcare workers represent 74% of all reported workplace violence [WPV] assaults in the U.S. (OSHA, 2016). These WPV assaults are underreported by nurses for fear of retaliation, lack of action, and administrative discouragement (ANA, 2019; Ezeobele et al., 2020). Awareness of WPV focusing on prevention, protection, and recovery are mutual goals for all stakeholders (Busch et al., 2021; Fewster-Thuente & Velsor-Friedrich, 2008; King, 2007). Research demonstrates patient-centered healthcare that prioritizes nurse protection from …

Group: King International Nursing Group

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree is a practice focused doctorate, with nursing theory providing guidance for integrative practice experiences and the DNP project. The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) meets the DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006) as a process, a patterning of human-environmental integration, directing actions for making positive change of health in individuals and groups. Evaluative outcomes are measurable in all four adaptive domains (Roy, 2009). The RAM facilitates transforming the care context and culture of practice to holistic, person-centered care. Numerous types of DNP scholarship have been linked with the RAM; philosophical, scientific, and cultural assumptions of the …

Blending Family-Centered Care And The Neuman Systems Model In Caring For Children Experiencing Traumatic Stress., Betsy Mickey Mcdowell

Group: King International Nursing Group

Child traumatic stress disorders occur when children are exposed to (i.e.experience, witness, confronted by) traumatic events or situations that overwhelm their ability to cope. This exposure can be acute or chronic. At least a quarter of a million children are admitted to an ICU each year in the United states and it is thought that as many as on third of these children ultimately will develop symptoms of acute stress disorder(ASD)or of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therefore it is imperative that nurses be on the alert for risk factors and clinical manifestations of ASD/PTSD plus actively prevent the development of …

The Humanistic Foundations Of Imogene King's Theory Of Mutual Goal Attainment And Implications, Beverly J. Whelton Oct 2024

The Humanistic Foundations Of Imogene King's Theory Of Mutual Goal Attainment And Implications, Beverly J. Whelton

Group: King International Nursing Group

This presentation provides the humanistic foundations of Imogen King's theory of Mutual Goal Attainment through the Classical-Modern synthesis of the Contemporary philosopher, Norris Clark. Classical philosophy tells us humans are substantial (matter/form) beings with the capacities of knowing, reasoning and choosing from options we know. Modern philosophy tells us humans possess their own sense of self. They are beings towards others with self-possession and are self-transcendent and self-communicative finding fulfillment in self-giving. These natural capacities need to be nurtured and supported through education and mutual decision making.

Using The Holistic Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms To Guide Nursing Practice In Serious Illness And At The End Of Life, Amy K. Moore

Group: King International Nursing Group

This presentation describes a new creative and imaginative theory-driven practice model for nursing in complex and challenging situations. The Holistic Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (HTOUS), (grounded in Rogers' Science of Unitary Human Beings) , describes how the nurse can help people achieve wellbecoming in the context of serious illness and at the end of life. HTOUS views human beings and their environments as complex, co-extensive, dynamic irreducible energy fields in mutual process. Human and environment field patterns are empirically observable through manifestations in the forms of situations, perceptions experiences varied expressions and evolve in the context of nursing actions. Symptoms, …

Lessons From The Field: Strategies To Recruit Men In Theory-Based Qualitative Research, Ashley Rivera Oct 2024

Lessons From The Field: Strategies To Recruit Men In Theory-Based Qualitative Research, Ashley Rivera

Group: King International Nursing Group

Theory-based qualitative research has made significant progress in providing insight into the experiences of many genders, especially for women and those that identify as LGBTQ+, allowing the profession of nursing to increase gender-sensitive treatment and target the health needs within those populations. However, men are underrepresented in both theory-based and qualitative research. Without research on men's experiences, there cannot be adequate gender -sensitive care of men in nursing practice and healthcare. Gender-specific healthcare concerns for men include risks for combined lower physical and emotional health as evidenced by an increased prevalence of preventable diseases, low utilization of mental health's services, …
