Assessment Of Educational Effectiveness Of Applying Nightingale's Concept Of "Disease" To Promote The Reflection Of Life Style Of Nursing Students, Shu Chun Chien, Akiko Nagata, Shinobu Saito, Natsuko Nitta, Toshie Yamamoto, Yoshiko Wazumi, Sachiko Tsubaki, Hitomi Yamagishi

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Purpose: This study is to assess the educational effectiveness of applying Nightingale's concept of "Disease" to promote the reflection of life styles of nursing students. Nightingale descripted disease as, "a reparative process." She went on to say, "The reparative process which Nature has instituted, and which we call disease, has been hindered by some want of knowledge or attention, in one or in all of these things and pain, suffering, or interruption of the whole process sets in". According to the above concept we can find one very important principle hidden in Nightingale's thinking. That is, if we know what …

Conflict Is Not Common In Our Workplace, Shirley May Newberry, Rebecca L. Inglis, Ana M. Schaper Jan 2012

Conflict Is Not Common In Our Workplace, Shirley May Newberry, Rebecca L. Inglis, Ana M. Schaper

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Purpose: To describe results of a baseline assessment of conflict in the workplace and present implications for initiating an intervention program. A national survey (Dewitty et al, 2009) indicated that 53% of nurses reported conflict as "common" or "very common" in the workplace. Conflict situations can lead to poor patient outcomes. To improve patient care quality and safety, a conflict engagement program, developed by the Center for American Nurses (centerforamericannurses.org), was implemented. A first step was to assess staff nurses' perceptions of conflict prevalence and type, and to gain insights into their interpretation of the baseline data.

Methods: Survey Monkey …

What Do Adolescents Think About Teen Parenting?: Informing Policy With Research, Judith Herrman

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Purpose: While teen birth rates have declined, selected groups of adolescents continue to experience parenting. Although many adults share beliefs about the costs associated with teen parenting, the attitudes of teens are not known. This session will present the findings of focus group and survey studies designed to determine teen perceptions of adolescent births. Theoretical Framework: This research is based on the theory of reasoned action in which perceived costs and rewards guide decision-making and behavior. The framework was used to construct the survey and focus group guide, to organize qualitative and quantitative data, and to analyze findings.

Methods: Two …

The Lived Experience Of Inpatient Education Among Parents With Children Newly Diagnosed With Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (All), Jesusa Chua

Biennial Convention (CONV)

A new diagnosis of cancer in a child can become the most challenging event in a parent's life. The multi-faceted therapies, as well as the prospect of complicated home care can add more stress into a parent's already trying experience; making the task of inpatient discharge education tricky. Little is known about the lived experience of inpatient education among parents of children with a new oncology diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to explore this experience using a phenomenological approach. Seven semi-structured interviews were held with parents of children newly diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) within the past …

Exerting Leadership With Students In The Utilization Of Social Networking Sites, Carole A. Mckenzie, Cheryl K. Kent

Biennial Convention (CONV)

As social networking sites and new communications technology become more enmeshed in the fabric of everyday life, the professional, ethical and legal implications of this sociological phenomenon are just beginning to emerge in the literature. As professional programs begin to struggle with the consequences, both educationally and in the professional practice setting, educators need assistance with how to manage these issues. In nursing, the legal ramifications may also include the possibility of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violations. For all educators, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FEERPA) comes into play in terms of how information is …

Fact Or Fiction?: Busting The Myths Surrounding New Graduate Rn Transition, Linda J. Patrick, Kathryn A. Pfaff, Jennifer N. Parent, Judy A. K. Bornais

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Despite a variety of supportive initiatives, new graduate Registered Nurses (RNs) continue to report significant challenges when making the shift from academia to professional practice. The stressors associated with transition have been widely studied for decades; however, more recent work in this area suggests that new graduate RNs often experience a debilitating period of "transition shock" (Duchscher, 2001). Persistent stress is associated with burnout, a phenomenon known to hamper retention of new graduate RNs. In Canada, burnout can occur within the first two years of practice (Canadian Nurses' Association, 2006), with a significant number of new graduates leaving nursing positions …

Biennial Convention (CONV)

In the Netherlands, the concept of recovery in mental health care has taken on new meanings in recent years that emphasize personal empowerment and de-emphasize traditional medical definitions focusing on the absence of psychopathology. According to Anthony, "recovery involves the development of new meaning and purpose in one's life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental illness." Essentially, recovery can be thought of as managing one's illness so that the person can develop or regain a sense of self and place in society. Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) is a curriculum-based approach to helping consumers of mental health …

Outcomes Of Evidence-Based Practice Education In Bedside Nurses: A Qualitative Study, Laurie A. Sparks, Karen A. Balakas

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Practicing nurses today are expected to incorporate best evidence in their care. Evidence-based practice (EBP) has become recognized as the gold standard of care, prompting many healthcare organizations to invest resources into the creation of a culture that sustains the use of evidence for direct care decision-making. Previous research has focused on nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding EBP and this data has indicated an inability of nurses to incorporate EBP in daily practice. Although outcomes of an EBP program are often measured in terms of completed projects, the goal of our program was to change the clinical decision-making of the …
