Early Detection And Management Of Delirium Through Routine Nurse Screening On Older Adult Hospitalized Patients, Elaine Duterte Delvo-Favre

DNP and Student Works

Nurses play a crucial role in implementing care designed to reduce delirium's duration and severity. Unmanaged delirium in the older adult patient population can result in prolonged hospitalization, profound decline in health status, and possible short or long-term institutionalization. A nurse-driven delirium management protocol was piloted on an orthopedic surgical unit over a period of four weeks. The goal was to detect delirium early in the postoperative period for early management and thus, the patient would be free of delirium symptoms at discharge.

All patients age 65 years old and over were assessed for delirium every shift and a delirium …

Improving Self-Management In A Complex Population Through Patient-Centered Education And Interdisciplinary Communication, Kathryn Hiner

DNP and Student Works

The residual cognitive and physical deficits of traumatic brain injury and stroke create unique challenges during rehabilitation. A microsystem assessment of an inpatient rehabilitation unit serving traumatic brain injury and stroke patients identified areas for improvement in patient satisfaction and timely discharge preparation. Both of these issues were linked to poor communication and late initiation of education of patients and care partners. A literature review revealed that formal education and discharge programs for these populations have little effect on patient and care partner outcomes. As a result, an evidence-based project was undertaken using patient-centered education practices shown to be effective …

Effect Of A Drinker Identity On Smoking-Related Information Processing And Behavior, Chia-Kuei Lee Oct 2016

Effect Of A Drinker Identity On Smoking-Related Information Processing And Behavior, Chia-Kuei Lee

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports

Drinking and smoking frequently co-occur in undergraduate students. A drinker identity - a valued identity related to alcohol consumption behaviors - predicts high levels of alcohol use and alcohol problems. Since alcohol use and tobacco use are often paired in the social context, smoking-related information, behaviors and routines may be encoded into a drinker identity. This study investigated the role of the drinker identity (drinker self-schema) on smoking-related information processing and behavior in undergraduate students who drink and smoke but do not self-identify as smokers. Also, the effects of early alcohol experiences with alcohol on the drinker self-schema were also …
