The Effect Of A Promotora-Guided Educational Intervention And Partner Presence In Improving Condom Use Self-Efficacy Amongst Partnered Latino Adults, Shirley Ann Levenson
Dissertations
This study examined the effect of a promotora guided educational intervention in order to improve condom use within the Latino community. Effective and culturally appropriate strategies for promoting condom use within the Hispanic/Latino community in the United States are needed urgently because of the high prevalence of infection with unwanted pregnancy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases in the Hispanic/Latino groups.
This was a quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest study. The treatment group received an educational intervention that was conducted in English and Spanish in a closed classroom setting. Data were compared among the women entered at the 10 …
A Comparative Study Of Pain Intensity, Information Seeking, And Adjustment To Prostate Cancer In Japanese American And European American Men, Mildred Ortu Kowalski
A Comparative Study Of Pain Intensity, Information Seeking, And Adjustment To Prostate Cancer In Japanese American And European American Men, Mildred Ortu Kowalski
Dissertations
Adjustment to illness is a multi-dimensional and difficult process for many patients facing a life-threatening illness, such as prostate cancer. Adjustment encompasses changes in social interactions, physical limitations and role function (Germino et al., 1998; Hoskins et ah, 1996). Information-seeking and the reporting of pain promote adjustment and are explained by the Roy Adaptation Model (Boston Based Adaptation Research in Nursing Society, 1999); which was used as a framework for this study. As the United States becomes more ethnically diverse, nurses are challenged to care for patients from different ethnic backgrounds. The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore …
Information Literacy Competencies Of Registered Nurses At Magnet Hospitals, Kimberly Dawn Belcik
Information Literacy Competencies Of Registered Nurses At Magnet Hospitals, Kimberly Dawn Belcik
Dissertations
More patients are turning to the Internet as as source of health information. Nurses occupy the frontline of healthcare and must have information literacy (IL) competencies to guide themselves and their patients to the correct and appropriate health information on the Internet. Within magnet hospitals, which are exemplars for excellent nursing practice, there is an increased emphasis on evidence based practice and research, which requires IL. Exploring IL at magnet hospitals was reasonable considering such competence is promoted. Previous research indicates that nurses lack IL competencies which are necessary to inform their patients and impact healthcare but many studies rely …

The Utilization Of An Alarm Elimination Fall Prevention Program, Angela Moses
The Utilization Of An Alarm Elimination Fall Prevention Program, Angela Moses
DNP and Student Works
A typical nursing home with 100 beds reports 100-200 falls each year (CDC, 2015). It is common to see the utilization of personal alarms in nursing homes to prevent falls, although there is no evidence to support the idea that personal alarms reduce falls. The project aimed to address the question: In long-term care patients, what is the impact of an alarm elimination program versus current practice of utilizing alarms, on fall rates over a 2-month time frame? The project used a multi-pronged, alarm elimination program. Limitations of the project were an overall low compliance rate among staff, a short …
Sense Of Belonging And Registered Nurse Job Satisfaction, Sarah E. Abel
Sense Of Belonging And Registered Nurse Job Satisfaction, Sarah E. Abel
Theses
Increased registered nurse turnover may be a significant contributor to the nursing shortage; therefore factors must be acknowledged that lead to poor nurse retention. Tourangeau, Cummings, Cranley, Ferron, and Harvey (2010) identified that a relationship exists between job satisfaction, nurse retention, and nurse turnover. This is a replication of Tourangeau et al.'s (2010) study and will seek to identify additional factors that may influence registered nurse turnover and specifically search to find what work or life situations influenced nurses to remain or end employment. Miles and Huberman's (1994) deductive qualitative data coding method will be used to categorize, refine, and …

Nurses' Perceptions Of The Image Of The Profession Of Nursing, Lorraine E. Emeghebo
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the evolution of nurses' perceived image of nursing from the time nurses begin their career and through various phases of nursing experience. The image of nursing as perceived by nurses and by the public affects recruitment of new nurses and retention of experienced nurses (Buerhaus, 2000, Irvine & Evans, 1995, Nevidjon & Erickson, 2001). There is a projected deficiency of 800,000 nurses by 2020 (National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, 2002) that has been attributed, in part, to low enrollments and graduations from nursing programs, as well as nurses leaving the profession. …

Medication Dosage Calculation: A Mathematical Intervention For Nursing Students, Theresa D. Cowan
Dissertations
Nurse educators continue to express concern over the struggle that nursing students have with mathematical calculations necessary to compute medication dosage. This applied dissertation designed, implemented, and evaluated a structured program of mathematical remediation incorporating dimensional analysis. This program targeted nursing students with demonstrated deficiencies in computation skills. The degree of mathematical preparation that the student was exposed to prior to enrollment into nursing courses was considered worthy of review. The age-old adage of gender differences that were theorized to affect the mathematical ability of students was taken into regard as well. Best practices included a curriculum devised to address …
