The purpose of this course is to expose Freshman students to three key topics in international affairs, taking advantage of the special research and teaching interests of three of the Whitehead School’s full-time faculty members. Students will gain an appreciation not only for the topics covered, but also for the complexity, variety, and appeal of international affairs as a course of study. An additional purpose of this course is to provide students with important skills that will be useful to them throughout their undergraduate careers and beyond, such as effective reading and writing skills.

The course will build on the work done during the Fall Semester on the components of Leadership and their actual implementation in the real world over the course of history.

The second part of this course over the Spring Semester will be divided into two main halves. The first half will continue with a certain number of new Case Histories, and apply them to actual situations in the contemporary world. In this course, students will learn about the nature of international environmental problems and will apply an interdisciplinary set of analytical tools to understand their causes and possible solutions. The course will survey and analyze the actual and potential institutions the international community employs to address these problems.

The course will include several requirements, more fully described below: (a) completing assigned readings before class and participating in class discussions; (b) preparing journal entries; (c) taking a final exam. Ability Of The Urban Teacher Selection Interview To Identify Teachers Who Are Likely To Be Retained In The Buffalo Public Schools, Patricia Frey

The rate of teacher turnover appears to be higher than employee turnover in many other occupations. What is currently perceived as a teacher shortage may in reality be a problem of teacher retention. This study examined the use of the Urban Teacher Selection Interview, developed by Martin Haberman, Ph.D., as a tool for choosing teachers for urban districts. Almost 36% of those teachers eligible for employment in Buffalo refused employment. This compares favorably with a national average of 40% of teachers who choose not to teach. Mobilizing The Masses: The Need For Vision And Charisma, Christi R. Calvano

This study examined the significance of vision and charisma as the two pertinent characteristics that explain the difference in the degree of commitment of followers. The following hypotheses were proposed: (1) Leaders who espouse a more inclusive vision are more likely to mobilize highly committed followers; and (2) Leaders who are more charismatic are more likely to mobilize highly committed followers. ' Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the Independence Movement in India, specifically, Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, Stokely Carmichael, Mohandas Gandhi, Abul Kalam Azad, and Mohammad Ali Jinnah were assessed. Background: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has been incorporated into the curricula in many medical schools. It has also spread into schools of health sciences, nursing, public health, business and other professional education programs. The necessary for effective problem-based learning as well as the behavioral elements, which may be attributed to effective problem-based learning, are generally the characteristics that employers seek when making staffing decisions. Due to the nature of international organizations, the management functions are diverse and the management processes and practices are complex. To make international organizations effective and cost-efficient is a great management challenge.

This course will review the key management areas, the management methods and instruments. It is designed to understand the management issues and to develop analytical skills for solving management problems.

The course will include at least two field trips to the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City to discuss selected management topics with United Nations managers.
