Large-scale marine protected areas (LSMPAs; > 1000 km²) provide important refuge for large mobile species, but most do not encompass species' ranges. To better understand current and future LSMPA value, we concurrently tracked nine species (seabirds, cetaceans, pelagic fishes, manta rays, reef sharks) at Palmyra Atoll and Kingman Reef (PKMPA) in the U.S. Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument. PKMPA and the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone encompassed 39% and 54% of species movements (n = 83; tracking duration range: 0.5–350 days), respectively. Species distribution models indicated 73% of PKMPA contained highly suitable habitat. Under two projected future scenarios (SSP …

The development of non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems remains a critical challenge, particularly in resource-constrained settings. This study proposes an efficient deep learning framework integrating Edge Artificial Intelligence for continuous blood pressure estimation using photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. We evaluate three architectures: a residual-enhanced convolutional neural network, a transformer-based model, and an attentive BPNet. Using the MIMIC-IV waveform database, we implement a signal processing pipeline with adaptive filtering, statistical normalization, and peak-to-peak alignment. Experiments assess varying temporal windows (10 s, 20 s, 30 s) to optimize predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. The volcanic activity at ultraslow-spreading ridges is less understood compared with that at faster-spreading ridges. Studies of year-to-year changes along the faster-spreading ridges have provided important information regarding the size and frequency of eruptions. However, ultraslow-spreading ridges produce less frequent eruptions, limiting the possibility to study short-term changes in the seafloor morphology to understand longer-term volcanic processes. Therefore, a different approach is needed to estimate the size and frequency of volcanic eruptions at the slowest spreading ridges. This research is proposed according to the main goal of analyzing the impact of avatars in the building of a digital identity and social interactions in the metaverse. In order to achieve it, a mix of methods has been applied (interviews, survey and content analysis), from an exploratory approach and from a triple perspective: perceptions of brands, users and psychology experts. Findings reflect a concordance between avatars and personal identities, a less marked trend to try new identities, and the persistence of physical stereotypes. As part of a U.S. Department of Education grant, we developed over 60 hours of online professional development (OPD) modules in Spanish. This mixed methods study: (1) explores Spanish-English middle school bilingual teachers’ (MSBTs') shifts in language ideologies before and after completing the OPD, and (2) investigates if and how OPD resources support implementation of practices that reflect translanguaging pedagogy. Data sources include pre- and post-OPD survey results and semi-structured interviews. The two surveys were analyzed based on their scales; the interviews were analyzed iteratively using inductive and deductive codes. This research explores the impact of avatar human-likeness on psychological closeness and its downstream consequences in virtual-reality work and learning environments. Study 1 suggests that people feel greater psychological closeness to more (vs. less) humanlike avatars. Study 2 applies machine learning to virtual-reality recordings and shows that people physically move closer to more (vs. less) humanlike avatars. Study 3 extends these findings by showing that avatar human-likeness positively influences attitudes toward adopting virtual-reality in education. Finally, Study 4 shows that enhanced psychological closeness to humanlike avatars promotes trust in instructors, leading to more favorable attitudes toward virtual experience. Two additional …

Traditional asphalt binders and lime additives significantly contribute to carbon emissions, and conventional liquid amine-based antistrip agents, which are used to reduce moisture damage, lose efficacy over time. This study evaluates the performance of PG 64-16 Low Carbon binder, incorporating 10% post-consumer plastic and amine-impregnated zeolite (AIMZ) as a protective carrier for liquid amines. Access to relevant information resources play a critical role in fostering learning environment. Prior investigation showed that there is a dearth of research on the use of electronic information resource amongst academic staff in universities. Previous studies also focused on electronic information resource use by students. This study, was therefore carried out to examine electronic information resources use on the perceived teaching effectiveness of the academic staff in the selected universities in Oyo state, Nigeria.

Information, Secrecy, And Falsehood, Pierre Le Morvan

Secrecy and Society

Can information be false? An important debate in the philosophy of information turns on this seemingly simple question. According to veridicalism (or the veridicality thesis), truth is a necessary condition for information; by contrast, according to non-veridicalism (or the non-veridicality thesis), it is not. I argue that this debate has noteworthy implications for how we should conceive of secrecy understood in terms of concealment of information. I also argue that, since falsehoods can be secret, it is more tenable to hold that secrecy is not restricted to true information than to hold that it is.
