Globular Clusters In The Stellar Stream Surrounding The Milky Way Analogue Ngc 5907, Adebusola B. Alabi, Duncan A. Forbes, Aaron J. Romanowsky, Jean P. Brodie

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We study the globular clusters (GCs) in the spiral galaxy NGC 5907 well-known for its spectacular stellar stream-to better understand its origin. Using wide-field Subaru/Suprime-Cam gri images and deep Keck/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we identify and obtain the kinematics of several GCs superimposed on the stellar stream and the galaxy disc. We estimate the total number of GCs in NGC 5907 to be 154 ± 44, with a specific frequency of 0.73 ± 0.21. Our analysis also reveals a significant, new population of young star cluster candidates found mostly along the outskirts of the stellar disc. Using the properties of the …

Harmonizing Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation In Transportation And Land-Use Planning In California Cities, Serena E. Alexander, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Ashley M. Hooper, Michael R. Boswell

Mineta Transportation Institute

Abstract: Recent extreme weather events in California—wildfires, drought, and flooding—make abundantly clear the need to plan effective responses to both the causes and the consequences of climate change. A central challenge for climate planning efforts has been identifying transportation and land-use (TLU) strategies that simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions (“mitigation”) and adapt communities so that they will be less affected by the adverse impacts of climate change (“adaptation”). Sets of policies that collectively address both mitigation and adaptation are known as “integrated actions.” This study explores municipal climate planning in California to determine whether cities incorporate integrated actions into their …

Precursor Effects And Field-Induced Short-Range Order Above The Verwey Transition In Single Fe3O4 Crystals, Carolus Boekema, Carlos Morante

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The internal fields in single crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) have been previously studied through muon-spin rotation (μSR). By Maximum-Entropy (ME) μSR, we analyze Fe3O4 μSR data with external fields parallel to the <111>, <110> or <100> axis. The ME peak-to-noise ratio is optimized by varying the filter time and time interval. Several μSR time series indicate a beat pattern. Using MEμSR, a second frequency signal is seen at non-zero fields in the temperature range above the Verwey transition (TV = ∼123 K). At zero field, MEμSR confirms with much-improved precision the existence of one frequency signal found earlier by curve fitting (CF) …

We examine thermodynamic and kinematic structures of terrain trapped airflows (TTAs) during an atmospheric river (AR) event impacting Northern California 10–11 March 2016 using Alpha Jet Atmospheric eXperiment (AJAX) aircraft data, in situ observations, and Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) Model simulations. TTAs are identified by locally intensified low-level winds flowing parallel to the coastal ranges and having maxima over the near-coastal waters. Multiple mechanisms can produce TTAs, including terrain blocking and gap flows. The changes in winds can significantly alter the distribution, timing, and intensity of precipitation. We show here how different mechanisms producing TTAs evolve during this event …

The “Indirect Message” In Kierkegaard And Chán Buddhism, Zdeněk Zacpal Jan 2020

The “Indirect Message” In Kierkegaard And Chán Buddhism, Zdeněk Zacpal

Comparative Philosophy

The article seeks to analyse Kierkegaard’s indirecte Meddelelse, which the author proposes to translate as ‘indirect message’. It attempts to consider and illuminate this concept and its general characteristics, types and cases in Kierkegaard's work. They are to serve as a baseline for investigations of indirect messages in Buddhism, especially the famous ‘public cases’ (gong-àn / kōan 公案) of the Chán Buddhists. The author tries to specify indirect messages on both sides of the cultural divide in terms of some Western philosophers. Kierkegaard’s theoretical rationale for his indirect message is profound, sophisticated and appropriate to the theoretical …

A New Materialism: A Reading Of The New Art From China, Mary Wiseman Jan 2020

A New Materialism: A Reading Of The New Art From China, Mary Wiseman

Comparative Philosophy

This essay has three parts. The first moves from what artists confronted when China was first opened to the west in 1978 to what two classical Chinese critics and artists said art was and how it was to be made. The second looks at artists’ works made between two exhibitions in the United States, one in 1998, the other in 2017, to find an uncanny reprise of the classical principles. The third looks at the ideas of the global, contemporary, and art through the works of Peter Osborne and Arthur Danto that apply to the new art from China.

On What Is Real In Nāgārjuna’S “Middle Way”, Richard H. Jones

Comparative Philosophy

It has become popular to portray the Buddhist Nāgārjuna as an ontological nihilist, i.e., that he denies the reality of entities and does not postulate any further reality. A reading of his works does show that he rejects the self-existent reality of entities, but it also shows that he accepts a "that-ness" (tattva) to phenomenal reality that survives the denial of any distinct, self-contained entities. Thus, he is not a nihilist concerning what is real in the final analysis of things. How Nāgārjuna’s positions impact contemporary discussions of ontological nihilism and deflationism in Western philosophy is also discussed.
