Evaluating Innovative Financing Mechanisms For The California High-Speed Rail Project, Shailesh Chandra, Timothy Thai, Vivek Mishra, Princeton Wong

Mineta Transportation Institute

Millions of dollars are involved in high-speed rail (HSR) infrastructure construction and maintenance. Large-scale projects like HSR require funding from a variety of avenues beyond those available through public monies. Although HSR serves the general public’s mobility needs, any funds (whether State or Federal) flowing from the public exchequer usually undergo strict review and scrutiny. Funds from public agencies are always limited, making such traditional financing mechanisms unsustainable for fulfilling HSR’s long-term operational and maintenance cost needs—on top of initial costs involved in construction. Therefore, any sustainable means of financing HSR projects would always be welcome. This research presents an …

A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru Mar 2021

A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are an essential tool for Bioinformatic analysis, with extensive success at finding patterns (e.g. CRISPR arrays or genes of interest) in DNA or protein sequences. HMMs are conceptually intricate, and the algorithms that make use of them are complicated. Thus they present a challenge to Bioinformatics instructors at the undergraduate level, particularly when the students’ educational backgrounds are broadly diverse. At San Jose State University, many undergraduate Bioinformatics students are Biology majors with little or no prior coursework in mathematics, statistics, or programming. For this population a theory-based approach to teaching HMMs would be ineffective. To …

Flash-Based Security Primitives: Evolution, Challenges And Future Directions, Holden Gordon, Jack Edmonds, Soroor Ghandali, Wei Yan, Nima Karimian, Fatemeh Tehranipoor

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Over the last two decades, hardware security has gained increasing attention in academia and industry. Flash memory has been given a spotlight in recent years, with the question of whether or not it can prove useful in a security role. Because of inherent process variation in the characteristics of flash memory modules, they can provide a unique fingerprint for a device and have thus been proposed as locations for hardware security primitives. These primitives include physical unclonable functions (PUFs), true random number generators (TRNGs), and integrated circuit (IC) counterfeit detection. In this paper, we evaluate the efficacy of flash memory-based …

Tio2–Graphene Quantum Dots Nanocomposites For Photocatalysis In Energy And Biomedical Applications, Anuja Bokare, Sowbaranigha Chinnusamy, Folarin Erogbogbo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The focus of current research in material science has shifted from “less efficient” single-component nanomaterials to the superior-performance, next-generation, multifunctional nanocom-posites. TiO2 is a widely used benchmark photocatalyst with unique physicochemical properties. However, the large bandgap and massive recombination of photogenerated charge carriers limit its overall photocatalytic efficiency. When TiO2 nanoparticles are modified with graphene quantum dots (GQDs), some significant improvements can be achieved in terms of (i) broadening the light absorption wavelengths, (ii) design of active reaction sites, and (iii) control of the electron-hole (e−-h+) recombination. Accordingly, TiO2-GQDs nanocomposites exhibit promising multifunctionalities in a wide range of fields including, …

A Facile High-Throughput Model Of Surface-Independent Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilms By Spontaneous Aggregation, Terrence Cheng, Nelson S. Torres, Ping Chen, Anand Srinivasan, Sandra Cardona, Grace C. Lee, Kai P. Leung, Jose L. Lopez-Ribot, Anand K. Ramasubramanian

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Many microbes in their natural habitats are found in biofilm ecosystems attached to surfaces and not as free-floating (planktonic) organisms. Furthermore, it is estimated that nearly 80% of human infections are associated with biofilms. Biofilms are traditionally defined as three-dimensional, structured microbial communities that are attached to a surface and encased in a matrix of exopolymeric material. While this view of biofilm largely arises from in vitro studies under static or flow conditions, in vivo observations have indicated that this view of biofilms is essentially true only for foreign-body infections on catheters or implants where biofilms are attached to the …

A Revised Position For The Primary Strand Of The Pleistocene-Holocene San Andreas Fault In Southern California, Kimberly Blisniuk, Katherine Scharer, Warren D. Sharp, Roland Burgmann, Colin Amos, Michael Rymer

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The San Andreas fault has the highest calculated time-dependent probability for large-magnitude earthquakes in southern California. However, where the fault is multistranded east of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, it has been uncertain which strand has the fastest slip rate and, therefore, which has the highest probability of a destructive earthquake. Reconstruction of offset Pleistocene-Holocene landforms dated using the uranium-thorium soil carbonate and beryllium-10 surface exposure techniques indicates slip rates of 24.1 ± 3 millimeter per year for the San Andreas fault, with 21.6 ± 2 and 2.5 ± 1 millimeters per year for the Mission Creek and Banning strands, …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Scarcity in wildland fire progression data as well as considerable uncertainties in forecasts demand improved methods to monitor fire spread in real time. However, there exists at present no scalable solution to acquire consistent information about active forest fires that is both spatially and temporally explicit. To overcome this limitation, we propose a statistical downscaling scheme based on deep learning that leverages multi-source Remote Sensing (RS) data. Our system relies on a U-Net Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to downscale Geostationary (GEO) satellite multispectral imagery and continuously monitor active fire progression with a spatial resolution similar to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) …

Using Saildrones To Validate Arctic Sea-Surface Salinity From The Smap Satellite And From Ocean Models, Jorge Vazquez-Cuervo, Chelle Gentemann, Wenqing Tang, Dustin Carroll, Hong Zhang, Dimitris Menemenlis, Jose Gomez-Valdes, Marouan Bouali, Michael Steele

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Arctic Ocean is one of the most important and challenging regions to observe—it experiences the largest changes from climate warming, and at the same time is one of the most difficult to sample because of sea ice and extreme cold temperatures. Two NASA-sponsored deployments of the Saildrone vehicle provided a unique opportunity for validating sea-surface salinity (SSS) derived from three separate products that use data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite. To examine possible issues in resolving mesoscale-to-submesoscale variability, comparisons were also made with two versions of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The mountains of High Mountain Asia serve as an important source of water for roughly one billion people living downstream. This research uses 15 years of dynamically downscaled precipitation produced by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to delineate contrasts in precipitation characteristics and events between regions dominated by the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) versus westerly disturbances during the cool season (December to March). Cluster analysis reveals a more complex spatial pattern than indicated by some previous studies and illustrates the increasing importance of westerly disturbances at higher elevations. Although prior research suggests that a small number of westerly …

A Machine Learning Approach As A Surrogate For A Finite Element Analysis: Status Of Research And Application To One Dimensional Systems, Poojitha Vurtur Badarinath, Maria Chierichetti, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Current maintenance intervals of mechanical systems are scheduled a priori based on the life of the system, resulting in expensive maintenance scheduling, and often undermining the safety of passengers. Going forward, the actual usage of a vehicle will be used to predict stresses in its structure, and therefore, to define a specific maintenance scheduling. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be used to map a reduced set of data coming from real-time measurements of a structure into a detailed/high-fidelity finite element analysis (FEA) model of the same system. As a result, the FEA-based ML approach will directly estimate the stress distribution …

Nlp-Based Customer Loyalty Improvement Recommender System (Clirs2), Katarzyna Anna Tarnowska, Zbigniew Ras

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Structured data on customer feedback is becoming more costly and timely to collect and organize. On the other hand, unstructured opinionated data, e.g., in the form of free-text comments, is proliferating and available on public websites, such as social media websites, blogs, forums, and websites that provide recommendations. This research proposes a novel method to develop a knowledge-based recommender system from unstructured (text) data. The method is based on applying an opinion mining algorithm, extracting aspect-based sentiment score per text item, and transforming text into a structured form. An action rule mining algorithm is applied to the data table constructed …
