This bibliometric analysis in this paper aims to study the quantitative progress done in the artificial compressibility (AC) method-based CFD simulation and analyze its potential in solving incompressible flow simulations in computational fluid dynamics smoothly. The sector of CFD is enhancing more and more maturely due to advancements in computing architecture, numerical methods, and simulation tools. There have been various attempts to solve the pressure-velocity coupling issue in the Navier-Stokes equation. The artificial compressibility method (ACM), as opposed to pressure-correction methods, solves the incompressible equation in a non-segregated manner. With the introduction of the ACM, the system of the equation …

Machine Learning Estimation Of Fire Arrival Time From Level-2 Active Fires Satellite Data, Angel Farguell, Jan Mandel, James Haley, Derek V. Mallia, Adam Kochanski, Kyle Hilburn

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Producing high-resolution near-real-time forecasts of fire behavior and smoke impact that are useful for fire and air quality management requires accurate initialization of the fire location. One common representation of the fire progression is through the fire arrival time, which defines the time that the fire arrives at a given location. Estimating the fire arrival time is critical for initializing the fire location within coupled fire-atmosphere models. We present a new method that utilizes machine learning to estimate the fire arrival time from satellite data in the form of burning/not burning/no data rasters. The proposed method, based on a support …

We present spatially resolved two-dimensional maps and radial trends of the stellar populations and kinematics for a sample of six compact elliptical galaxies (cE) using spectroscopy from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). We recover their star formation histories, finding that all except one of our cEs are old and metal rich, with both age and metallicity decreasing toward their outer radii. We also use the integrated values within one effective radius to study different scaling relations. Comparing our cEs with others from the literature and from simulations we reveal the formation channel that these galaxies might have followed. All …

A Meta-Analysis Of Amino Acid Δ15N Trophic Enrichment Factors In Fishes Relative To Nutritional And Ecological Drivers, M. Teresa Nuche-Pascual, Rocío I. Ruiz-Cooley, Sharon Z. Herzka

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The use of amino acid (AA) nitrogen stable isotopes (δ15N) from consumer tissues aims to provide precise estimates of trophic position (TP), but the drivers of AA isotope fractionation remain unclear. In particular, the main factors driving the variability in TEFAA among taxonomic groups and trophic levels remain largely unexplained, which challenges the application of universal values for TEFs. While the relationship between protein content and quality and TEFs has been examined, studies have yielded inconsistent results, and the role of protein and lipid nutritional requirements as well as feeding regime have not been considered. Likewise, drivers that influence physiological …

Heart Rate And Startle Responses In Diving, Captive Harbour Porpoises (Phocoena Phocoena) Exposed To Transient Noise And Sonar, Siri L. Elmegaard, Birgitte I. Mcdonald, Jonas Teilmann, Peter T. Madsen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Anthropogenic noise can alter marine mammal behaviour and physiology, but little is known about cetacean cardiovascular responses to exposures, despite evidence that acoustic stressors, such as naval sonars, may lead to decompression sickness. Here, we measured heart rate and movements of two trained harbour porpoises during controlled exposure to 6–9 kHz sonar-like sweeps and 40 kHz peak-frequency noise pulses, designed to evoke acoustic startle responses. The porpoises initially responded to the sonar sweep with intensified bradycardia despite unaltered behaviour/ movement, but habituated rapidly to the stimuli. In contrast, 40 kHz noise pulses consistently evoked rapid muscle flinches (indicative of startles), …

Understanding encounters between marine predators and fisheries across national borders and outside national jurisdictions offers new perspectives on unwanted interactions to inform ocean management and predator conservation. Although seabird–fisheries overlap has been documented at many scales, remote identification of vessel encounters has lagged because vessel movement data often are lacking. Here, we reveal albatrosses–fisheries associations throughout the North Pacific Ocean. We identified commercial fishing operations using Global Fishing Watch data and algorithms to detect fishing vessels. We compiled GPS tracks of adult black-footed Phoebastria nigripes and Laysan Phoebastria immutabilis albatrosses, and juvenile short-tailed albatrosses Phoebastria albatrus. We quantified albatrosses-vessel encounters …

Transcriptional Profiling Of Neurological Development Of Drosophila Following Bisphenol A Exposure, Eden Johnson

Master's Projects

The ubiquitous environmental chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). BPA is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that is thought to interfere with neuron development by changing neuronal gene expression. Impacting neurodevelopment in this manner can cause lasting changes in behavior and potentially lead to the development of NDDs. Delineating the molecular processes that incur changes in gene expression following BPA exposure will advance our understanding of how BPA impacts neurodevelopmental pathways and affects the pathophysiology of NDDs. An RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis pipeline was created for transcriptional profiling of neurological development in wild-type Drosophila melanogaster …

Witness For Two-Site Enabled Coordination, Sriram Priyatham Siram Jun 2021

Witness For Two-Site Enabled Coordination, Sriram Priyatham Siram

Master's Projects

Many replicated data services utilize majority quorums to safely replicate data changes in the presence of server failures. Majority quorum-based services require a simple majority of the servers to be operational for the service to stay available. A key limitation of the majority quorum is that if a service is composed of just two servers, progress cannot be made even if a single server fails because the majority quorum size is also two. This is called the Two-Server problem. A problem similar to the Two-Server problem occurs when a service’s servers are spread across only two failure domains. Servers in …

Do Multi-Use-Path Accessibility And The Clustering Effect Play A Role In Residents' Choice Of Walking And Cycling?, Chih-Hao Wang, Na Chen

Mineta Transportation Institute

The transportation studies literature recognizes the relationship between accessibility and active travel. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of walking and cycling accessibility to multi-use paths on active travel behavior. Combined with the culture of automobile dependency in the US, this knowledge gap has been making it difficult for policy-makers to encourage walking and cycling mode choices, highlighting the need to promote a walking and cycling culture in cities. In this case, a clustering effect (“you bike, I bike”) can be used as leverage to initiate such a trend. This project contributes to the literature as one …
