As computing education expands globally, the dominance of English in programming languages can present barriers for students who are not native English speakers. This research work investigates whether language matters in programming by examining how a bilingual programming workshop influences student attitudes, perceived understanding and comfort. Sixty bilingual participants from San Jose State University, 40 with little to no prior programming experience and 20 experienced programmers completed a two-hour workshop using the multilingual Hedy platform. Pre- and post-surveys measured changes in confidence, enjoyment, motivation, identity, and usefulness, complemented by open-ended questions about participants’ experiences. All students showed improvements across most …

Ceramic on-demand extrusion (CODE) is a new material extrusion additive manufacturing process for advanced ceramics. Studies have demonstrated capability of CODE in producing ceramic parts with superior mechanical properties. The objective of this study was to develop the next generation of CODE printer. The frame, gantry system, extrusion head, oil tank, and radiation subsystem were designed, fabricated, and controlled. Ceramic slurries were developed and fed to the extruder that prints parts onto a bedplate. Green parts were then subject to postprocessing, including drying, debinding, and sintering. Composites and functionally graded materials were created using CODE to further study the process.

Vienna’s reputation as the ballroom dancing capital of Europe was already secured by the end of the eighteenth century and continues to this day. This chapter examines the rich history of dance in Vienna from the eighteenth century – the period of the first public ballrooms as well as the emergence of ballet as an independent art form – to the present day. It discusses Viennese ball culture and its iconic dance, the waltz, which is the part of Vienna’s history that has been most influential on wider dance culture, and originated the most recognizably and distinctively ‘Viennese’ musical style.

Increasing freshwater discharge from the cryosphere has the potential to affect mechanisms that regulate the supply of macronutrients to primary producers in the ocean. Although numerous studies have characterized the biogeochemical effects of freshwater discharge from the Greenland Ice Sheet within fjords, it is unclear to what extent these effects propagate offshore and whether or not seasonal macronutrient availability in Greenland's shelf seas has changed since annual freshwater discharge increased in the mid-1990s. Here, we collate and scrutinize extensive work undertaken over the past century to constrain macronutrient distributions in Greenland's coastal seas. From 1929 to 2022, over 38,000 publicly …

Learning Hub

This article examines how a sixth-grade pathways course at Kamehameha Schools in Hawai‘i leveraged Game-Based Learning (GBL) and Indigenous knowledge to foster student agency, creativity, and environmental stewardship. Designed and taught by school librarian Patricia Louis with support from a multidisciplinary instructional team, the Nā Lawai‘a Hawai‘i (Fishing, Hawaiian Style) elective engaged students in researching the ‘Ama‘ama (Hawaiian striped mullet) and the ecological challenges it faces, then translating their learning into the design of a board game, ‘Ama‘ama Escape. Grounded in constructivist, learning-by-making principles, the course guided students through an iterative design process that included inquiry, collaboration, prototyping, and playtesting. …

Development Of Sustainable Red Algae–Sisal Fiber Composite Films Via Doctor Blading, Matthew Richards, Joshua Baird, Noah Serda, Vuong Do, Yanika Schneider

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study investigated the properties of red algae (RA) biocomposite films reinforced with natural sisal fibers and plasticized with glycerol. The polymer was extracted from locally sourced red seaweed and combined sisal fibers at varying fiber loadings (0–45 wt%) using the doctor blading technique. Composite films were analyzed using a variety of methods to evaluate the chemical composition, thermal behavior and mechanical performance. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of kappa-carrageenan as the dominant polysaccharide in the RA matrix, whereas elemental analysis verified the dilution of sulfur content and enrichment of carbon with increasing fiber incorporation. Thermal stability increased with fiber …

Mackenzie River Freshwater Controls Early Sea Ice Formation In The Eastern Beaufort Sea, M. J. Zahn, S. Fournier, I. G. Fenty, M. Steele, M. Wood, P. Gaube Feb 2026

Mackenzie River Freshwater Controls Early Sea Ice Formation In The Eastern Beaufort Sea, M. J. Zahn, S. Fournier, I. G. Fenty, M. Steele, M. Wood, P. Gaube

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Arctic sea ice plays a critical role in Earth's climate system, and as it continues to thin and retreat, understanding the processes driving its variability is increasingly important. Using satellite data and a coupled ocean–sea ice model, we examined how freshwater from the Mackenzie River influences fall sea ice formation in the Beaufort Sea. An “ice bridge” between the coast and offshore ice edge consistently forms over the river's freshwater plume, with its location and extent varying interannually with freshwater distribution. Regions influenced by the plume experienced sea ice onset an average of 3 weeks earlier than adjacent, saltier waters. …

Hippocampal subfields differentially develop and age, and they vary in vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Innovation in high-resolution imaging has accelerated clinical research on human hippocampal subfields, but substantial differences in segmentation protocols impede comparisons of results across laboratories. The Hippocampal Subfields Group (HSG) is an international organization seeking to address this issue by developing a histologically valid, reliable, and freely available segmentation protocol for high-resolution T2-weighted 3 T MRI (http://www.hippocampalsubfields.com). Here, we report the first portion of the protocol focused on subfields in the hippocampal body; protocols for the head and tail are in development. The body protocol includes definitions …

A Prepositional Cycle In French, Fabienne Martin, Yining Nie, Artemis Alexiadou Feb 2026

A Prepositional Cycle In French, Fabienne Martin, Yining Nie, Artemis Alexiadou

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This paper discusses the morphosyntax and semantics of locative prepositions in French, with a particular focus on the prefix de-in complex prepositions (e.g., en dessous de [in from.under of] ‘below’) and in axial nominalizations (e.g., le dessous de [the from.under of] ‘the bottom part/region of’). We propose that in these formations, de-, which developed historically from an ablative marker, retains a Source semantics and lexicalizes the function PROJECT, which defines the region outward from the axial part of an object (Matushansky & Zwarts, 2019). We support our analysis with a corpus study on French child data showing that children acquiring …

Alternative Project Delivery Methods In California: The Path Forward, Ghada M. Gad, Maria Calahorra Jimenez, Chaimae Nacir, Ronald Shrestha

Mineta Transportation Institute

Alternative Project Delivery Methods (APDMs) are increasingly being recognized as effective alternatives to the traditional Design-Bid-Build (DBB) approach for transportation projects. As APDMs gain traction among California’s transportation agencies, understanding the legislative frameworks that enable their use and the characteristics of each method is critical. This study benchmarks the existing use of APDMs in California transportation agencies of varying types and sizes, while considering the characteristics (advantages and barriers/challenges to implementation) of each APDM and the authorizations enabling its implementation. Based on these findings, it also provides recommendations for key factors to consider in APDM selection and implementation. The study …

A Hydrogen Hub Blueprint For The California Supply Chain, Tyler Reeb, Barbara Taylor Feb 2026

A Hydrogen Hub Blueprint For The California Supply Chain, Tyler Reeb, Barbara Taylor

Mineta Transportation Institute

As global climate targets tighten and state regulations accelerate, hydrogen technology presents a significant opportunity to help California supply chain and transportation stakeholders comply with state emissions mandates and global goals aimed to reduce the impacts of climate change. However, while fuel cell costs and infrastructure have received attention, workforce development remains overlooked. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are especially promising for diesel-reliant sectors that are hard to decarbonize without negatively impacting operational efficiency. But scaling hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure in tandem with emerging consumer and industrial markets will not be easy. State and federal policies, often conflicting, further …

Accurate diagnostics are essential for disease control and elimination efforts. However, access to diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is hindered by limited healthcare infrastructure in many NTD-endemic regions, as well as by reliance on time- and labor-intensive diagnostic methods, such as smear microscopy. New diagnostic tools that are portable, rapid, low-cost, and meet World Health Organization (WHO) sensitivity and specificity targets are urgently needed to accelerate NTD control and elimination programs. Here, we introduce the NTDscope, a portable microscopy platform that enables point-of-care imaging and automated detection of parasites and other pathogens in patient samples. The NTDscope builds on …

Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species by assessing the vulnerability of 256 marine megafauna species to 23 at-sea threats. The threats we considered included individual fishing gear types, climate-change-related subthreats not previously assessed, and threats associated with coastal impacts and maritime disturbances. Our ratings resulted in 70 species having high vulnerability (v > 0.778 …

Aggregation of the protein tau defines tauopathies, the most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases, which include Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia. Specific neuronal subtypes are selectively vulnerable to tau aggregation, dysfunction, and death. However, molecular mechanisms underlying cell-type-selective vulnerability are unknown. To systematically uncover the cellular factors controlling the accumulation of tau aggregates in human neurons, we conducted a genome-wide CRISPRi screen in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons. The screen uncovered both known and unexpected pathways, including UFMylation and GPI anchor biosynthesis, which control tau oligomer levels. We discovered that the E3 ubiquitin ligase CRL5SOCS4 controls tau levels in …

How Can Zhu Xi’S Resources Contribute To The Feminist Progressive Project? A Reflection On The Study Of Zhu Xi’S Theory Of Kun Way-Making, Kun Wang Jan 2026

How Can Zhu Xi’S Resources Contribute To The Feminist Progressive Project? A Reflection On The Study Of Zhu Xi’S Theory Of Kun Way-Making, Kun Wang

Comparative Philosophy

In Zhu Xi’s theory of cultivation, kun way-making (kun-dao坤道) to cultivate the virtue of kun (kun-de 坤德) goes ahead to qian way-making (qian-dao乾道), in which the virtue of qian (qian-de 乾德) is cultivated. In this theory, everyone is encouraged to cultivate kun way-making, which it happens that women represent. It is worth noting that the theory faces an issue of potential inconsistency between the “gendered” construction of qian-kun 乾坤 and the positive absence (kong-que空闕), the pivot of the cultivating process, where the renegotiation of the virtues of qian-kun is attuned to optimal …

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey Jan 2026

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey

Comparative Philosophy

An examination of the nature of the human person provides a crucial foundation for understanding human life and identity. Conceptions of personhood have far-reaching implications beyond philosophy, influencing politics, ethics, religion, and epistemology. Beliefs about what constitutes a person shapes theories of rights, responsibility, and justice; moral views on duty and accountability; religious understandings of the soul and the afterlife; and epistemological reflections on the sources and limits of knowledge. Inquiry into human nature is therefore not merely abstract, but central to understanding social organization and individual conduct. This paper examines two influential accounts of human nature drawn from distinct …

A Cross-System Analysis Of Structural Commensurability Between Axiomatic Foundations Of Set Theory (Zfc) And The Principles Of Transcendent Wisdom, Mohammadjavad Maarefvand Jan 2026

A Cross-System Analysis Of Structural Commensurability Between Axiomatic Foundations Of Set Theory (Zfc) And The Principles Of Transcendent Wisdom, Mohammadjavad Maarefvand

Comparative Philosophy

Building on observed similarities in uniqueness proofs for the empty set and the Necessary Existent (Wājib al-Wujūd), this study engages the meta-methodological issue of cross-system commensurability. It identifies four instances of structural commensurability between Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with Choice (ZFC) and Mulla Sadra's Transcendent Wisdom (Ḥikmat al-Muta'āliyah). First, identity principles: the Axiom of Extensionality provides a formal operational criterion analogous to the philosophical principle of identity through absence of distinguishing features. Second, multiplicity mechanisms: ZFC's constructor axioms (bottom-up construction) and emanation principles (top-down explanation) address analogous problems with inverse orientations. Third, transcending limitation: the Axiom of Infinity ensuring quantitative extensional …

A Critique Of Ziporyn’S Interpretation Of Early Chinese Thought: From The Constructive-Engagement Vantage Point, Xiaoqiao Liu Jan 2026

A Critique Of Ziporyn’S Interpretation Of Early Chinese Thought: From The Constructive-Engagement Vantage Point, Xiaoqiao Liu

Comparative Philosophy

Sameness and difference are among the most fundamental and yet most tension-laden categories in philosophy, bearing directly on the conditions under which judgment, classification, and meaning become possible. This article critically reconstructs and compares two influential but methodologically divergent approaches to this issue in contemporary comparative philosophy. One is Brook Ziporyn’s idea of coherence, which seeks to articulate a non-substantialist metaphysics as a response to tensions internal to the Western metaphysical tradition. The other is Bo Mou’s enhanced account of relative identity, which revises both absolute and modern relative identity theories through a bottom-up, semantically grounded framework oriented toward cross-tradition …
