Public Perception Of Risk In Missing Persons Investigations, Harry Lockett, Stefana Juncu
International Journal of Missing Persons
The current study investigated public perceptions of risk in missing person cases. A total of 271 participants were sequentially presented with five fictional vignettes describing missing individuals. Each case included a baseline description of the disappearance being "out of character" and four of these cases were paired with an additional risk factor: substance abuse, depression, dementia, or repeat missing status. The gender of the missing person was also manipulated between participants. Participants rated each case using both the standard categorical scale (Low/Medium/High) and an Extended Scale ranging from 1 to 7 and were also invited to respond to exploratory items …

The media plays an important role in a missing persons case. Media is a powerful tool in raising public awareness and support, traversing police investigation, family liaison, and the business of media. This article reports on a focus group of seven people with a long-term missing family member, and two focus group facilitators, one of whom was also the family member of a missing person (n=9). The aim of the study was to better understand how people, who have lived experience of a family member missing, participate in media opportunities, to understand impact. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping academic writing, sparking both enthusiasm and anxiety across higher education. Using GenAI tools to summarize literature, suggest outlines, and draft text is becoming more commonplace, but it also raises important questions in today’s academic writing: Who is the author when GenAI is involved? What counts as original work? What does learning look like when writing is generated and modified by machines? These questions are closely tied to long-standing concerns in library and information science (LIS), such as information literacy, transparency, authenticity, authorship, and ethics. The big data era in biology is underway, but the study of organismal form has been slow to capitalize on advances in imaging and computation. Imaging approaches can digitize whole organisms, but low throughput has limited the effort to document morphological diversity. Here, within the open science initiative ‘Antscan’, we applied high-throughput synchrotron X-ray microtomography to capture phenotypes across a diverse and ecologically dominant insect group: ants. At https://www.antscan.info, we provide 2,193 whole-body three-dimensional ant datasets from 212 genera and 792 species to broadly cover the ant phylogeny with a global scope, also pairing phenomic data with genome sequencing projects. …

Hydrogen Defects In Labi2o4x (X = Cl, Br, And I) Sillén Oxyhalide Phases And Their Impacts On Ionic Transport, Shin Young Kang, Andrew J.E. Rowberg, Shenli Zhang, Joel B. Varley

Sillén oxyhalides have recently emerged as promising materials for both photocatalytic and ionic transport applications, yet the role of likely-ubiquitous hydrogen-related defects in these layered compounds remains largely unexplored. Here, we employ first-principles defect calculations to investigate incorporation energetics for hydrogen- and oxygen-related defects, as well as their migration barriers in LaBi2O4X (X = Cl, Br, I) phases. We find that hydrogen interstitials, particularly protonic species (Hi+), are readily accommodated within the open Bi–O layers. Protons compete with oxygen vacancy donors (VO2+) and charge-compensate with oxygen interstitial acceptors (Oi2−). By linking hydrogen defect formation …

This paper presents a novel multimodal framework for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in homes that combines Channel State Information (CSI) from WiFi access points with visual data from camera images. This approach introduces a dual-stream classification pipeline that leverages a Transformer-based deep learning model for processing CSI features and a computer vision model based on a fine-tuned Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for image-based activity classification. To enable autonomous decision-making, an agentic AI module based on the Falcon Large Language Model (LLM) has been incorporated, which fuses predictions from both modalities through a reasoning-driven mechanism. This study explores sex differences in the relationship between childhood cyberbullying victimization (CCBV) and young adult sexual assault experiences and the potential moderating roles of childhood parent monitoring and deviant peer association on the relationship. A total of 356 college students aged 19–25 in the US participated in the online survey. The results indicated that CCBV was associated with an increased risk of college sexual assault victimization for both males and females. A significant moderating effect of childhood parental monitoring and deviant peer association was found between the association between CCBV and college sexual assault victimization for female students only.

Handgrip strength is a proxy for muscular fitness, an indicator for general health status, and is associated with cardiometabolic health. The mechanisms connecting handgrip strength to skeletal muscle function are incompletely understood. We applied integrated linkage-disequilibrium-adjusted colocalization analysis of genome-wide association study summary statistics for handgrip strength, combined with expression and splicing quantitative trait loci from skeletal muscle, and identified glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1) as a candidate gene for handgrip strength. CRISPR-interference knockdown of GBE1 in immortalized human skeletal muscle cells (HMCL-7304) demonstrated decreased glycogen content and accumulation of polyglucosan bodies. KRAS4a and KRAS4b are important regulators of signaling, and their interactions with the plasma membrane are dynamic and influenced by lipid composition. KRAS 4a and 4b have nearly identical globular domains but differ in their membrane-associated hyper variable region (HVR). The functional distinctions between these isoforms remain unclear, particularly with regards to their dependence on specific lipids and the membrane environment. Introduction: About 20% of police calls involve a person experiencing a behavioral health crisis. To better address these community member’s needs and reduce risk of harm, jurisdictions are developing programs that shift calls for crises related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health to non-law enforcement alternatives. In responding to these calls, first responders working in these alternative response programs are exposed to a different set of moral dilemmas and pressures, increasing their risk of developing moral injury. When Superstition Outperforms Truth: Belief Transmission, Sacrifice, And Cooperation Under Environmental Uncertainty, Aidin Hajikhameneh

We report results from an intergenerational experiment investigating how prosocial beliefs, whether accurate or false, emerge, spread, and support cooperation under environmental uncertainty (N=448, university students). In a repeated public goods game with randomly determined but ambiguously framed payoff shocks, participants often formed superstitious beliefs linking generosity to rewards. Compared to accurate beliefs, these superstitious beliefs, when transmitted to the next generation and internalized, led to greater cooperation and facilitated group formation via voluntary sacrifice. Individuals who held such beliefs were more likely to sacrifice and self-organize into high-functioning groups, achieving the highest levels of public good provision. These findings …

For a gas–solid interfacial system where chemical species undergo reversible adsorption, we develop a mesoscopic stochastic modeling method that simulates both gas-phase hydrodynamics and surface coverage dynamics by coupling the Langmuir adsorption model with compressible fluctuating hydrodynamics. To this end, we derive a thermodynamically consistent mass–energy update scheme that accounts for how the mass and energy variables in the gas and surface subsystems should be updated according to the changes in the number of molecules of each species in each subsystem due to adsorption and desorption events. Asphalt pavement cracking is one of the most critical distresses affecting pavement performance and service life. When pavement deteriorates, it can lead to safety hazards, higher vehicle maintenance costs, and expensive repairs for cities and states—making early detection essential for everyone who relies on the roadway system. To address this challenge, the research team developed a prototype cracking identification system that integrates a customized machine learning model with computer vision algorithms. This paper presents a perspective in which Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) is viewed not in its traditional role as an algorithm for solving the Boltzmann equation but as a numerical method for statistical mechanics. First, analytical techniques such as the collision virial and Green-Kubo relations, commonly used in molecular dynamics, are used to study the numerical properties of the DSMC algorithm. The stochastic aspect of DSMC, which is often viewed as unwanted numerical noise, is shown to be a useful feature for problems in statistical physics, such as Brownian motion and thermodynamic fluctuations. Critics of private regulation argue that voluntary standards often fail to meaningfully improve corporate conduct while simultaneously functioning as a stumbling block that prevents the development of more stringent, mandatory regulation by states. This paper complicates this view by illustrating the instrumental value of private regulation—that is, its potential to act as a building block that facilitates the development of new government regulation that serves the public interest. Importance Latino and Hispanic individuals in the US represent a diverse and growing population, including a significant number of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals whose identities challenge the use of a single panethnic (ie, ethnicity) label. Scratch-type surface defects are among the most critical in wafer fabrication. Even minor scratches can result in rejected dies, substantial yield loss, and downstream reliability failures, making their early and precise detection essential for cost-effective production and long-term device performance. Given the scale and speed of modern semiconductor manufacturing, manual or traditional inspection methods are insufficient to reliably detect such subtle surface defects, underscoring the urgent need for intelligent, automated inspection systems capable of real-time, high-precision detection. Background: The 2022–2023 “twindemic” of COVID-19 and influenza has worsened emergency department (ED) overcrowding, revealing racial/ethnic disparities in emergency care. This study assessed racial differences in ED operational outcomes—specifically, discharge ED length of stay (LOS), boarding time among admitted patients, and left without being seen (LWBS) rates—and characterized disparities concentrated in the upper tails of delay distributions. The foundational tonic in Indian classical music presents a crucial element for algorithmic understanding. This research investigates the efficacy of modern machine learning techniques for detecting this fine-grained musical attribute from diverse audio representations. Addressing limitations in prior work that used spe-cialized techniques, this study pioneers the integration of audio representations with non-linear dimensionality reduction and machine learning classifiers for tonic classification. The methodology employs various machine learning algorithms on music represented by audio features such as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and Mel spectrograms. Ten years following a marine heatwave event, whale entanglements continue to challenge ecosystem-based fishery and protected species management in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). Although new fishing regulations combined with environmental changes resulted in a decline in humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) entanglements from the peak during a prolonged heatwave, reports continue at a higher rate than prior to 2014. The entanglement record is imperfect because many entanglements go unobserved and those that are observed may not correspond to where the entanglement occurred. The opioid epidemic remains a public health crisis, with overdose rates continuing to rise. Associations between individuals opioid use and knowledge of and attitudes toward opioid substances and overdoses have been investigated to inform educational interventions. However, many studies utilize college student or adolescent samples, and findings remain inconclusive. An assessment of opioid knowledge and attitudes across broader adult populations is lacking. As the largest active carbon reservoir on Earth, the ocean is a cornerstone of the global carbon cycle, playing a pivotal role in modulating ocean health and the Earth’s climate system. Understanding these crucial roles requires access to a broad array of data products documenting the changing chemistry of the global ocean as a vast and interconnected system. This review article provides an overview of 68 existing ocean carbonate chemistry data products and data product sets, encompassing compilations of cruise datasets, derived gap-filled data products, model simulations, and compilations thereof.
