An Evaluation Of The City Of Watsonville's Trip Reduction Ordinance, R. Todd Bennett
Master's Projects
This Special Study examines the state, regional and local processes of adopting and implementing a trip reduction ordinance and the impacts and effects upon the public and private sectors at the local level.
The City of Watsonville, with over 32,000 residents, is located on the southern edge of Santa Cruz County. Its economic and cultural identity is as an agricultural production and processing region. This paper follows the development and implementation …
Airport Land Use Planning And Geographic Information Systems, Andrei P. Urtiew
Airport Land Use Planning And Geographic Information Systems, Andrei P. Urtiew
Master's Projects
Airport land use planning plays an important part in keeping airport transportation facilities and operations available to the local population. Conflicting land uses (specifically residential) with airports tend to either limit the airports' operations or completely shut the airports down. Airports are steadily becoming a more vital transportation link for today's society and economy. In order to prevent these land use conflicts from occurring, airport land use plans are developed. An airport land use plan (ALUP) provides information as to what types of land uses are compatible with airport operations and how close to the airport certain land uses should …
Analysis & Development Of Integrated Hydrotech Japan Organization, Tuan M. Nguyen
Analysis & Development Of Integrated Hydrotech Japan Organization, Tuan M. Nguyen
Master's Projects
A common problem facing corporations of the world today as they try to expand and "globalize" is having their separate, uncoordinated divisions serving the same customers, often even competing against each other. This problem is faced by Industrial Constructions Corporation (ICC) in Japan, where its HydroTech Constructions division and the HydroTech Systems division are operating independently to serve the same customers. In this project, internal and external factors affecting the organizations are analyzed. Research of literature on contemporary designs for global competitions, American and Japanese management philosophies, the Z theory, Total Quality Management philosophy, and Just-In-Time principles is also undertaken. …

An Introduction To Virtual Reality, Leda Kanellakos
SWITCH
A general introduction to the concept of virtual reality, the technology associated with it, and the theoretical applications of virtual reality. Virtual reality is compared to the introduction of the television and how both revolutionize communication. Examples of applications for virtual reality include high school reunions and computerized fantasies. The author also discusses the future applications of virtual reality as it becomes more widely spread. The concept of virtual reality is discussed within the context of quotes from Vary T. Coates in their 1992 book The Future of Information Technology, and Myron W. Krueger in their article Artificial Reality …

The Nuts & Bolts Of Cooperative Learning In Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos
The Nuts & Bolts Of Cooperative Learning In Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos
Faculty Publications
A great number of engineering students work alone. But in industry, teamwork is required most of the time. Incorporating Cooperative Learning (CL) into an engineering program gives students an opportunity to practice problem solving and communication skills in a "simulated" professional environment. The paper briefly discusses the motivation behind using CL in engineering courses. Then, the essential elements to make CL successful in the classroom are examined and examples of how these elements have been incorporated into engineering courses taught by the author are given. Problems that have been encountered along with possible fixes are also mentioned.
