A Historical Framework Of The Qualitative Analysis Of Social Media For Libraries And Archives, Kheir Fakhreldin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Since the widespread adoption of social media in the 2010s, many libraries and archives have begun to use social media engagement as part of their outreach. While likes, retweets, and follows can be easily measured, there are also qualitative aspects of social media engagement that can illuminate other aspects of repositories' social media communication with their users. This article looks at historical trends in qualitative analysis of social media and suggests ways in which libraries and archives can incorporate qualitative analysis into their social media strategy.

Battery Electric Vehicles: Travel Characteristics Of Early Adopters, Yunwen Feng, Jean-Daniel Saphores, Hilary Nixon, Monica Ramirez Ibarra

Mineta Transportation Institute

Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), …

Generalized Choi–Davis–Jensen’S Operator Inequalities And Their Applications, Shih Yu Chang, Yimin Wei Sep 2024

Generalized Choi–Davis–Jensen’S Operator Inequalities And Their Applications, Shih Yu Chang, Yimin Wei

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The original Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequality, known for its extensive applications in various scientific and engineering fields, has inspired researchers to pursue its generalizations. In this study, we extend the Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequality by introducing a nonlinear map instead of a normalized linear map and generalize the concept of operator convex functions to include any continuous function defined within a compact region. Notably, operators can be matrices with structural symmetry, enhancing the scope and applicability of our results. The Stone–Weierstrass theorem and the Kantorovich function play crucial roles in the formulation and proof of these generalized Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequalities. Furthermore, we demonstrate an application …

Temperature affects the timing of the transformation of amorphous silica (opal-A) into crystalline (opal-CT) exponentially. Thus, in hot subseafloor environments opal-A is expected to convert into opal-CT at relatively shallow burial depths, where in situ temperatures do not exceed ∼56 °C, as it has been previously observed at various deep-sea sites and in onshore rock outcrops as well as assessed during lab experiments. The response of biosilica (biogenic opal-A) diagenesis to steep geothermal gradients (∼224–529 °C/km) at extremely high sedimentation rates (∼1 m/kyr) was examined in cores from off-axis boreholes drilled by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 385 …

Unlocking Dividends: The Impact Of Managerial Social Capital On International Corporate Payouts, Douglas J. Cumming, David Javakhadze, Tijana Rajkovic

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We present robust international evidence that managerial social capital is a significant determinant of dividend policy worldwide. Our analysis reveals that social capital mitigates information asymmetry and financial constraints, thereby resulting in increased dividend payouts. The effect is particularly pronounced for firms anticipating high cash retention costs. These findings are consistent with the pecking-order perspective of corporate payouts. Moreover, we identify a significant moderating role of shareholder legal protection and national cultural characteristics. Our results remain robust across alternative model specifications and tests for endogeneity.

Tai Chi Practice Buffers Aging Effects In Functional Brain Connectivity, Jonathan Cerna, Prakhar Gupta, Maxine He, Liran Ziegelman, Yang Hu, Manuel E. Hernandez

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Tai Chi (TC) practice has been shown to improve both cognitive and physical function in older adults. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the benefits of TC remain unclear. Our primary aims are to explore whether distinct age-related and TC-practice-related relationships can be identified with respect to either temporal or spatial (within/between-network connectivity) differences. This cross-sectional study examined recurrent neural network dynamics, employing an adaptive, data-driven thresholding approach to source-localized resting-state EEG data in order to identify meaningful connections across time-varying graphs, using both temporal and spatial features derived from a hidden Markov model (HMM). Mann–Whitney U tests assessed between-group differences …

Consistent Seasonal Hydrography From Moorings At Northwest Greenland Glacier Fronts, Marie J. Zahn, Kristin L. Laidre, Malene Simon, Kathleen M. Stafford, Michael Wood, Josh K. Willis, Elizabeth M. Phillips, Ian Fenty

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Greenland's marine-terminating glaciers connect the ice sheet to the ocean and provide a critical boundary where heat, freshwater, and nutrient exchanges take place. Buoyant freshwater runoff from inland ice sheet melt is discharged at the base of marine-terminating glaciers, forming vigorous upwelling plumes. It is understood that subglacial plumes modify waters near glacier fronts and increase submarine glacier melt by entraining warm ambient waters at depth. However, ocean observations along Greenland's coastal margins remain biased toward summer months which limits accurate estimation of ocean forcing on glacier retreat and acceleration. Here, we fill a key observational gap in northwest Greenland …
