The weighted blanket quality improvement pilot project was implemented at Stanford Healthcare (SHC) to address the limited number of nonpharmacological interventions available for agitation management in the critical care setting. Patients within the Neurosciences ICU (NSICU) at SHC are clinically complex and uniquely vulnerable to experiencing agitation. The objectives of this initiative were to understand nurses' perceptions surrounding weighted blanket use in the critical care setting and assess whether there was a decrease in Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) scores with this intervention. From September 2025 to December 2025, the nurses within the NSICU implemented the use of weighted blankets for …
Building A Road To Mitigate Ambulance Patient Offload Time (Apot), William J. Manguil
Building A Road To Mitigate Ambulance Patient Offload Time (Apot), William J. Manguil
Doctoral Projects
Emergency departments (EDs) worldwide are experiencing increased utilization resulting in care delays for patients seeking urgent treatment. Despite critical circumstances that warrant emergency medical services (EMS) response, patients arriving to the ED via ambulance remain vulnerable to delays in care due to prolonged ambulance patient offload times (APOTs). The amount of health care providers and treatment space necessary to initiate care are both limited and often strained resources which dictate the need for innovative interventions to prevent patient harm. The following project outlines the interventions implemented at the project site to improve APOT as a means to enhance patient safety …

Liquid Fire Accelerants' Effect On Blood Detectability, Genniltza Ramirez
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Five liquid fire accelerants were studied in their effects on blood detection in attempts to yield presumptive accelerant indicators to benefit fire scene investigators. The experiment involved burning different accelerant types via a 1:1 pig blood and accelerant ratio on cloth squares in trials of three, and then presumptively testing for blood using luminol. Luminol was selected for its sensitivity, subjectivity, and previous use in arson fire and thermal studies. For this study, accelerants were determined to have positive presumptive blood detection if detectable by camera for documentation. Presumptive blood detection of the accelerants resulted in: paint thinner with detection …
Two-Year Retrospective Evaluation Of Frailty To Optimize Postoperative Spinal Fusion Outcomes In Adults Aged 65 And Older, Sheri Loo
Doctoral Projects
Many older adults over the age of 65 have both spinal stenosis requiring spinal fusion surgery and frailty. As life expectancy has increased, many older individuals will undergo elective spinal fusion surgery to decrease their chronic pain in pursuit of improved quality of life. There is currently an underutilization of frailty screening for risk stratification of postoperative complications. A retrospective chart review over a two-year period from July 2023 to June 2025of adults aged 65 and older who underwent posterior spinal fusion surgery, involving 126 participants, was completed. We assessed the correlation between frailty and postoperative outcomes, discharge disposition, and …

A Novel Hybrid Dual-Stream Deep Learning Architecture Integrating Multi-State Lstm, Cnn, And Multi-Head Self-Attention For Water Level And Discharge Prediction (Missouri River Basin, Usa), Milad Ahmadi Gharehtoragh, Ali Mehran, Georgia Destouni, Alireza Taheri Dehkordi
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Study region: The Missouri River Basin, located between the states of Nebraska and Iowa, USA. Study focus: Water level (WL) and discharge (Q) are key hydrological variables, accurate prediction of which in both long-term and short-term (extreme events) scenarios is essential for water resources and flood risk management. We propose a novel hybrid deep learning architecture, CNN-NLSTM-SA, which integrates a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) branch for extracting local features and a Multi-State LSTM (NLSTM) branch for capturing long-term temporal dependencies. NLSTM, with its child-parent structure, enhances memory propagation and mitigates vanishing and exploding gradients. The outputs of these two branches …

Many-Body Benchmark Of Electronic Charge And Spin Densities For Li1–Xnio2, Abdul Ghaffar, Shenli Zhang, Liwen F. Wan, Kayahan Saritas, Fernando A. Reboredo, Jaron T. Krogel
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Accurate benchmarks are particularly important for highly correlated oxides as mean-field approximations often fail to describe the subtle balance of charge transfer and magnetism in these materials with an accuracy comparable to experimental needs. Here we present accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) results of the electronic charge and spin densities for the tunable highly correlated oxide Li1–xNiO2 for x = 0, 1/2, and 1. To enable quantitative comparisons, we introduce a robust density-partitioning scheme, extending Voronoi analysis to assign atomic charges from spatially noisy DMC densities. We then benchmark common approximations used in density functional theory (DFT). Comparison against DMC …

A Peer Support Model For Nursing Faculty: Stay And Thrive, Ngoc N. Hua
A Peer Support Model For Nursing Faculty: Stay And Thrive, Ngoc N. Hua
Doctoral Projects
Projections show a major nursing shortage over the next decade. Although many state and local efforts aim to expand the workforce, there is often less visibility into the nurse educators responsible for the healthcare pipeline. Moving clinicians into teaching roles presents unique challenges. Specifically, clinical skills do not easily transfer to classroom management, which can be jarring for new faculty. This "reality shock" frequently results in faculty turnover due to a lack of support during this important transition. This project looked at nursing faculty perceptions of a structured peer mentorship program at a Northern California community college. The intervention was …

Background: Military sexual trauma (MST) can have significant adverse effects on mental health and well-being, often leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and maladaptive beliefs. Although effective psychotherapies exist, stigma, confidentiality concerns, and systemic barriers often hinder help-seeking among service members and veterans. Mobile mental health apps offer an accessible and anonymous support alternative, potentially addressing such barriers. However, app effectiveness depends on user engagement and emerging evidence suggests that engagement may be shaped by symptom severity. Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to explore the relationship between posttraumatic symptom severity and user engagement with Beyond MST (US Department …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Cryogenic devices at 4.2K are indispensable in the control electronics for large-scale quantum computers. Due to its small manufacturing volume, a standard commercial foundry process is likely to be used in the near and medium terms. Moreover, 77K electronics are promising for high-speed server applications. Besides digital circuits, analog circuits with non-minimal channel length are particularly important in quantum computing control. In this paper, special structures are designed to characterize the device properties of medium- and long-channel length devices at 292K, 77K, and 4.2K in a commercial 14nm FinFET process. About 100 structures were measured for both NMOS and PMOS. …

Pattern-Aware Graph Neural Networks For Handling Missing Data, Minett Tran, Taehee Jeong
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Missing data is ubiquitous in real-world datasets. Traditional methods either discard incomplete samples or apply imputation techniques that ignore potentially informative missingness patterns, implicitly assuming that missingness occurs randomly. However, missingness patterns might provide additional information. We propose pattern-aware graph neural networks that explicitly encode which features are missing alongside observed values. We used four encoding strategies-learned embeddings, frozen random embeddings, statistical features, and hierarchical representations-across seven UCI datasets with naturally occurring missingness. Our Pattern-aware methods achieve substantial improvements over baselines, with an average improvement of 17% in balanced accuracy and 22% in F1-macro across all datasets. Our code and …
