Citation Analysis Of Theses In Library And Information Science Submitted To University Of Pune: A Pilot Study, R.V. Chikate, S.K. Patil

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This is a bibliometric study that used 27 LIS dissertations with a total of 6,257 citations. Most citations are from periodicals (42.2%), mostly from US and Indian journals. Nearly half of the citations recorded are from journal articles: 2,639 (42.2%) Nearly three quarters of the journal articles were from LIS journals, with the remainder from 33 other subject areas. College and Research Libraries is the most cited journal, followed by Scientometrics. Most of the citations are from 55 journals out of the total number.

Biological Invasions And Biocultural Diversity: Linking Ecological And Cultural Systems, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Robert Voeks Dec 2008

Biological Invasions And Biocultural Diversity: Linking Ecological And Cultural Systems, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Robert Voeks

Faculty Publications

Study of the ecological and economic effects of invasive species has paralleled their progressively pervasive influence worldwide, yet their cultural impacts remain largely unexamined and therefore unrecognized. Unlike biological systems, where the ecological consequences of biological invasions are primarily negative, from an ethnoscientific standpoint, invasive species' impacts on cultural systems span a range of effects. Biological invasions affect cultural groups in myriad, often unpredictable and at times contradictory ways. This review groups case studies into a conceptual matrix suggesting three categorically different cultural impacts of invasive species. Culturally impoverishing invasive species precipitate the loss or replacement of culturally important native …

Modulation Of The Nf-Κb Pathway By Bordetella Pertussis Filamentous Hemagglutinin, Tzvia Abramson, Hassya Kedem, David A. Relman Nov 2008

Modulation Of The Nf-Κb Pathway By Bordetella Pertussis Filamentous Hemagglutinin, Tzvia Abramson, Hassya Kedem, David A. Relman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Background
Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) is a cell-associated and secreted adhesin produced by Bordetella pertussis with pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory activity in host cells. Given the importance of the NF-κB transcription factor family in these host cell responses, we examined the effect of FHA on NF-κB activation in macrophages and bronchial epithelial cells, both of which are relevant cell types during natural infection.

Methodology/Principal Findings
Exposure to FHA of primary human monocytes and transformed U-937 macrophages, but not BEAS-2B epithelial cells, resulted in early activation of the NF-κB pathway, as manifested by the degradation of cytosolic IκBα, by NF-κB DNA binding, and …

The Development Of Academic Journals In Institutions Of Higher Learning In Kano State, Nigeria, Ahmed Mohammed Oct 2008

The Development Of Academic Journals In Institutions Of Higher Learning In Kano State, Nigeria, Ahmed Mohammed

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Academic journals are one of the primary media through which new knowledge is disseminated. This article reports on research that studied the academic journals in fifteen institutions of higher learning in the Kano state of Nigeria. The study revealed that five of the institutions produce academic journals, and that a total of 37 academic journals exist in institutions studied, including both active and ceased titles. The study further identifies problems associated with journals and measures to address the problems.

Heat-Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70) Expression In Four Limpets Of The Genus Lottia: Interspecific Variation In Constitutive And Inducible Synthesis Correlates With In Situ Exposure To Heat Stress, Yunwei Dong, Luke Miller, Jon Sanders, George Somero Oct 2008

Heat-Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70) Expression In Four Limpets Of The Genus Lottia: Interspecific Variation In Constitutive And Inducible Synthesis Correlates With In Situ Exposure To Heat Stress, Yunwei Dong, Luke Miller, Jon Sanders, George Somero

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Limpets of the genus Lottia occupy a broad vertical distribution on wave-exposed rocky shores, a range that encompasses gradients in the frequency and severity of thermal and desiccation stress brought on by aerial emersion. Using western blot analysis of levels of heat-shock protein 70 (Hsp70), we examined the heat-shock responses of four Lottia congeners: Lottia scabra and L. austrodigitalis, which occur in the high-intertidal zone, and L. pelta and L. scutum, which are restricted to the low- and mid-intertidal zones. Our results suggest distinct strategies of Hsp70 expression in limpets occupying different heights and orientations in the rocky intertidal zone. …

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder Sep 2008

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

With more and more genomes being sequenced, a lot of effort is devoted to their annotation with terms from controlled vocabularies such as the GeneOntology. Manual annotation based on relevant literature is tedious, but automation of this process is difficult. One particularly challenging problem is word sense disambiguation. Terms such as |development| can refer to developmental biology or to the more general sense. Here, we present two approaches to address this problem by using term co-occurrences and document clustering. To evaluate our method we defined a corpus of 331 documents on development and developmental biology. Term co-occurrence analysis achieves an …

Eighth National Garrett Morgan Symposium On Sustainable Transportation, Report Mti 08-03, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

On April 1, 2008, the Mineta Transportation Institute at San José State University hosted a videoconference that brought together experts in surface transportation and students from middle and high schools across the nation to discuss the importance of sustainable transportation. The goal was to introduce students to future career opportunities in transportation and to inspire them to take the high school and college courses that will prepare them for professional careers. Students from California, Maryland and Virginia participated in the 2008 symposium, during which they heard opening remarks from Vice Admiral Thomas J. Barrett, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department …

Unraveling Protein Networks With Power Graph Analysis, Loïc Royer, Matthias Reimann, Bill Andreopoulos, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Networks play a crucial role in computational biology, yet their analysis and representation is still an open problem. Power Graph Analysis is a lossless transformation of biological networks into a compact, less redundant representation, exploiting the abundance of cliques and bicliques as elementary topological motifs. We demonstrate with five examples the advantages of Power Graph Analysis. Investigating protein-protein interaction networks, we show how the catalytic subunits of the casein kinase II complex are distinguishable from the regulatory subunits, how interaction profiles and sequence phylogeny of SH3 domains correlate, and how false positive interactions among high-throughput interactions are spotted. Additionally, we …

Availability And Accessibility Of Information Sources And The Use Of Library Services At Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Akobundu Dike Ugah May 2008

Availability And Accessibility Of Information Sources And The Use Of Library Services At Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Akobundu Dike Ugah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Using the case study method, the author investigated the availability and accessibility of information sources and the use of library services in the university library, Michael University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria. The population was made up of 1,000 registered library users, with a random sample of 200. A response rate of 168 was recorded. The study revealed that information sources in the library are not readily available nor easily accessible and concludes that the independent variables of availability and accessibility have influence on, and a significant relationship with, the use of library services.
