The Use Of Impact Factor In The Appraisal Of Academic Librarians In Nigeria, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye May 2010

The Use Of Impact Factor In The Appraisal Of Academic Librarians In Nigeria, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study explores the degree to which academic librarians in Nigeria are committed to accepting the use of impact factor for assessing their academic performance. Fifty copies of a questionnaire were distributed and 41 returned. Descriptive statistics using means and percentages were used to generate data. A majority of the respondents disagreed that impact factor had wider acceptance than any alternative. More than half did not agree that many Nigerian scholars are reluctant to publish in international journals. Lapses in the provision of facilities which should facilitate high quality research are highlighted. It has become compelling on Nigerian universities to …

Evaluation Study Of C.A.R.E., The National Education Association's Culture, Abilities, Resilience, And Effort Professional Development Training, Noni Reis, Denise Alston, Linda Bacon, Brooke Whiting, Sheila Simmons Apr 2010

Evaluation Study Of C.A.R.E., The National Education Association's Culture, Abilities, Resilience, And Effort Professional Development Training, Noni Reis, Denise Alston, Linda Bacon, Brooke Whiting, Sheila Simmons

Faculty Publications

This was an evaluation study of C.A.R.E., National Education Association's Culture, Abilities, Resilience and Effort (C.A.R.E.): Strategies for Closing Achievement Gaps. The training is based on culturally relevant pedagogy and on the Center for Research on Educational Diversity and Excellence standards. The research questions for the study were: 1.Did the training lead to changes in instructional practices? 2.Were the tools and materials provided by the C.A.R.E. guide used? 3.Did the strategies lead to changes in student behavior and school practices Participants (n-275) completed an on-line survey and/or a telephone interview. Two-thirds (66%) of the participants noticed improvements in student achievement, …

Deconstructing The “Butterfly”: Teaching David Henry Hwang’S M. Butterfly In Cultural And Socio-Political Contexts, Eileen Chia Ching Fung Apr 2010

Deconstructing The “Butterfly”: Teaching David Henry Hwang’S M. Butterfly In Cultural And Socio-Political Contexts, Eileen Chia Ching Fung

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This essay intends to explore critical angles and offer pedagogical suggestions for Hwang’s play. The first part offers an exploration of the historical and cultural contextualization that has initiated and motivated the production of M. Butterfly, followed by a critical discussion on the play’s negotiations of race, gender, sexualities, and ethnicity that aims to offer pedagogical paradigms for teaching this play.

Interrogating Identity Construction: Bodies Versus Community In Cynthia Kadohata’S In The Heart Of The Valley Of Love, Nicole Myoshi Rabin Apr 2010

Interrogating Identity Construction: Bodies Versus Community In Cynthia Kadohata’S In The Heart Of The Valley Of Love, Nicole Myoshi Rabin

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

In an interview for the journal MELUS, Hsiu-chuan Lee claims that Cynthia Kadohata suggests her novel In the Heart of the Valley of Love does not directly take “any specific ethnicity as its central concern,” nor deal explicitly with the “identity issue” (165, 179). Despite these assertions by the author, In the Heart of the Valley of Love is mainly taught at the university level in Asian American Literature courses. While Kadohata’s novel has been established within this specific canon of Asian American Literature, her novel deals with issues that resonate among all racial groups. This paper considers the ways …

Processes Influencing Seasonal Hypoxia In The Northern California Current System, Thomas Connolly, Barbara Hickey, S. Geier, William Cochlan Mar 2010

Processes Influencing Seasonal Hypoxia In The Northern California Current System, Thomas Connolly, Barbara Hickey, S. Geier, William Cochlan

Faculty Publications

This paper delineates the role of physical and biological processes contributing to hypoxia, dissolved oxygen (DO) < 1.4 mL/L, over the continental shelf of Washington State in the northern portion of the California Current System. In the historical record (1950–1986), during the summer upwelling season, hypoxia is more prevalent and severe off Washington than further south off northern Oregon. Recent data (2003–2005) show that hypoxia over the Washington shelf occurred at levels previously observed in the historical data. The year 2006 was an exception, with hypoxia covering ∼5000 km2 of the Washington continental shelf and DO concentrations below 0.5 mL/L at the inner shelf, lower than any known previous observations at that location. In the 4 years studied, upwelling of low DO water and changes in source water contribute to interannual variability, but cannot account for seasonal decreases below hypoxic concentrations. Deficits of DO along salinity surfaces, indicating biochemical consumption of DO, vary significantly between surveys, accounting for additional decreases of 0.5–2.5 mL/L by late summer. DO consumption is associated with denitrification, an indicator of biochemical sediment processes. Mass balances of DO and nitrate show that biochemical processes in the water column and sediments each contribute ∼50% to the total consumption of DO in near-bottom water. At shorter than seasonal time scales on the inner shelf, along-shelf advection of hypoxic patches and cross-shelf advection of seasonal gradients are both shown to be important, changing DO concentrations by 1.5 mL/L or more over 5 days.
