Implementing A Solid Waste Management Diversion Program In A Conventional Cook–Serve Hospital System: A Feasibility Study, Marjorie Freedman, Irene Franklin
Implementing A Solid Waste Management Diversion Program In A Conventional Cook–Serve Hospital System: A Feasibility Study, Marjorie Freedman, Irene Franklin
Faculty Publications
Americans generate over 250 million tons of municipal solid waste (trash) each year, with institutional facilities such as hospitals accounting for up to 45% of this waste. Solid waste diversion, through recycling and composting, decreases the waste sent to landfills. The objective of this feasibility study was to implement an integrated solid waste diversion program at a conventional cook–serve kitchen for a 250-bed hospital. The waste diversion program resulted in 1390 pounds of organic matter and recycling being diverted from landfills over 5 days. It is estimated that the continuing program will reduce landfill waste by 51 tons annually.

Tod Proposal For Fremont's Warm Springs Bart Station Fremont California, Jayapriya Cherukuru
Master's Projects
The Warm Springs BART Extension Transit Village is a transit oriented development proposed for a site in south Fremont, California. Residents of Alameda County approved a measure to extend the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) line from Fremont to Warm Springs. To date, a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) and a Specific Plan have been prepared for the station area.
According to the SEIR, BART has proposed a parking lot designed around the station area to accommodate around 2040 on-site parking spaces.
The main objective of this study is to provide a design alternative for the City of Fremont, through …
Contrasting Community Building In Sponsored And Community Founded Open Source Projects, Joel West, Siobhán O’Mahony
Contrasting Community Building In Sponsored And Community Founded Open Source Projects, Joel West, Siobhán O’Mahony
Faculty Publications, School of Management
Prior characterizations of open source projects have been based on the model of a community-founded project. More recently, a second model has emerged, where organizations spinout internally developed code to a public forum. Based on field work on open source projects, we compare the lifecycle differences between these two models. We identify problems unique to spinout projects, particularly in attracting and building an external community. We illustrate these issues with a feasibility analysis of a proposed open source project based on VistA, the primary healthcare information system of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This example illuminates the complexities of …
Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman
Form-Based Zoning: A Tool For Creating Small Business Opportunities, Tiffin Michelle Goodman
Master's Projects
The United States has a curious history of employing zoning as a reactionary solution to society’s physical problems. In many ways, it has been an effective tool for ensuring the built environment develops in a manner consistent with cultural norms, preferences, and safety concerns. However, it has failed, in its current form, to keep pace with the growth pressures, transportation limitations, and basic service needs of the modern society. Hence, zoning regulation in the United States is at a crossroads. The structure of zoning ordinances must be reevaluated periodically to ensure they are effective and efficient in their goals. Traditional …
Shophouse: A Mixed Use Building Type, Tung Vy Tran
Shophouse: A Mixed Use Building Type, Tung Vy Tran
Master's Projects
For the last half of the century, it has been obvious that the most popular building type built in America is the single-family house. Effectively ingrained in many as the preferred habitat style, this building type is the main appeal in the idealized American dream of a suburban house with white picket fence. Architects, urban planners, designers. writers and even some citizens understand this dream is also the epitome of sprawl. Driven by capitalistic policies and the apathetic media that often encourage wasteful consumptions and wanton disregard for the environment, sprawl is undoubtedly a complex problem to solve. In city …

An evaluation of these characteristics will be completed and conclusions drawn in order to determine whether …
Transit-Oriented Development Guidelines For The Diridon Station Area In San Jose, Shruti Namjoshi
Transit-Oriented Development Guidelines For The Diridon Station Area In San Jose, Shruti Namjoshi
Master's Projects
The main objective of this study is to define strategies that the city of San Jose could undertake to encourage the implementation of transit-oriented development (TOD) in the area surrounding the Diridon station near downtown San Jose. Significant transportation investments are currently being focused on potentially expanding the Diridon station, thereby creating a regional transit hub in the South Bay. This presents a unique opportunity to create a TOD land use pattern in the area. The study area, for which TOD is recommended in this report, is defined to be an area of approximately half-mile radius around the Diridon station …

Smart Growth And Greyfields: The Case Of Santana Row, Britta S. Buys
Smart Growth And Greyfields: The Case Of Santana Row, Britta S. Buys
Master's Projects
I went through several topics for this Planning Report before finally settling on a case study of Santana Row. Santana Row is a 42-acre mixed-use development in San Jose, California that opened in November of 2002. As I spent almost three years as the Project Manager reviewing and processing land use applications to implement the approved General Development Plan for Santana Row, I was extremely excited about the eventual grand opening of this unique mixed-use development; I could not wait to see how people reacted to Santana Row. In the beginning, I was not sure what specifically I was going …
Making Growth Work For California’S Communities, Kenneth R. Schreiber
Making Growth Work For California’S Communities, Kenneth R. Schreiber
Mineta Transportation Institute
If the State of California government is to become a stronger advocate for transportation and land use policies that address growth patterns and related issues associated with community planning and development, it will be helpful for state policymakers, concerned professionals, and others involved in shaping California’s land use policies to have the clearest and most up-to-date understanding of existing efforts by local governments to improve and update planning methods; the status of, and attitude toward, innovation and change in the planning and community development profession; the extent to which local governments are incorporating new ideas and concepts into local plans …
Urban Regionalism And Smart Growth: The Oakland/San Leandro Example, Elizabeth Ruess Greene
Urban Regionalism And Smart Growth: The Oakland/San Leandro Example, Elizabeth Ruess Greene
Master's Projects
This planning report addresses the topic of regional collaboration and examines its latest iteration, which is known as smart growth. Smart growth efforts focus on restoring the urban core as a key component to revitalizing a region. An example of one such collaboration, the Oakland/San Leandro Joint Revitalization Plan, is evaluated to determine how effective an urban partnership can be and what this means for smart growth.
Research on this subject revealed that the successful elements of the Oakland-San Leandro project have a jurisdiction or community group which recognizes a direct benefit and champions its cause. To help ensure the …

Influences Of Transportation Planning On Urban Form, Alison Teresa Gardner
Influences Of Transportation Planning On Urban Form, Alison Teresa Gardner
Master's Projects
This research paper analyses the relationship between transportation and urban form, with a special focus on transit-oriented developments (TODs). It examines the development of American and British cities from an historical planning perspective beginning in the nineteenth century. Transportation policies, problems of urban growth and transit systems are also reviewed. Case studies are presented on two West Coast cities where TOD has began to address these problems.
An analysis of urban form in various regions reveals that transportation significantly affects how people live. While decades of planning for the automobile created a vast network of roadways, a recent re-discovery of …
Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler
Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler
Master's Projects
Cohousing is the name of a type of collaborative housing that has been developed in the past thirty years. It attempts to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions in which few people know their neighbors and tries to increase the sense of community. This type of housing development is similar to a traditional village or a close-knit neighborhood and some liken it to the best of small-town America where many of us grew up.
Cohousing is characterized by private, self-sufficient dwelling units; each having their own kitchen, living room, dining room, and bedrooms. Each cohousing development also has a common …

Brownfields: Revitalizing Contaminated Properties, Monique A. Mayeaux
Master's Projects
The idea of infill development is not new to planners and developers. Given today’s economic climate and growing awareness to prevent sprawl, especially in places such as the San Francisco Bay Area, this concept of infill development has truly come of age. Developing on land within the urban areas where the infrastructure is already in place is considered sustainable growth.
A brownfield is the term coined to describe a plot of land that Is vacant or underutilized due to real or perceived environmental contamination. These lots are typically commercial or Industrial properties, most often located within urban and economically distressed …
