Awareness And Perception Of Hiv/Aid Preventive Strategies Amongst Undergraduate Students Of Adeleke University, Ede Osun State. Nigeria, Ibidapo Oketunji Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Nigeria the most populous country in Africa with a population of about 180 million people is not ruled out of countries facing and suffering under the dangerous claws of HIVAIDS. Owing to this, there came the need to get the masses more sensitised on how to curb the spread of the disease and if possible obliterate the disease from the among students in tertiary institutions. A descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The study population consisted of ninety (90) undergraduates’ students within six (6) Faculties of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State Nigeria and simple random technique was …
Buddhist Phenomenology And The Problem Of Essence, Jingjing Li
Buddhist Phenomenology And The Problem Of Essence, Jingjing Li
Comparative Philosophy
In this paper, I intend to make a case for Buddhist phenomenology. By Buddhist phenomenology, I mean a phenomenological interpretation of Yogācāra’s doctrine of consciousness. Yet, this interpretation will be vulnerable if I do not justify the way in which the anti-essentialistic Buddhist philosophy can countenance the Husserlian essence. I dub this problem of compatibility between Buddhist and phenomenology the ‘problem of essence’. Nevertheless, I argue that this problem will not jeopardize Buddhist phenomenology because: 1) Yogācārins, especially late Yogācārins represented by Xuanzang do not articulate emptiness as a negation but as an affirmation of the existent; 2) Husserl’s phenomenological …

All Or Nothing? Nature In Chinese Thought And The Apophatic Occident, William Franke
All Or Nothing? Nature In Chinese Thought And The Apophatic Occident, William Franke
Comparative Philosophy
This paper develops an interpretation of nature in classical Chinese culture through dialogue with the work of François Jullien. I understand nature negatively as precisely what never appears as such nor ever can be exactly apprehended and defined. For perception and expression entail inevitably human mediation and cultural transmission by semiotic and hermeneutic means that distort and occult the natural in the full depth of its alterity. My claim is that the largely negative approach to nature that Jullien finds in sources of Chinese tradition can also be found in the West, particularly in its apophatic currents or countercurrents that …

Having Fun About Jesus:" Children's Constructions Of Their Relationship To Church, Henry James Zonio
Having Fun About Jesus:" Children's Constructions Of Their Relationship To Church, Henry James Zonio
Master's Theses
Children are not clay tablets upon which adults can etch predetermined futures. Rather, children are active agents who repeatedly interact with various social fields. Religion, one of those fields, is a major social institution that influences one's religious beliefs as well as one's secular behavior. Studying children's views on religion and how they relate to their religious communities makes explicit the ways children actively participate in their own religious socialization. Consequently, this study is an in-depth examination of children's participation in their religious communities at two evangelical Protestant churches in Northern California utilizing a multiple methods qualitative approach including participant …
Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine
Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.

When And Where: Patron Use Of Computer Banks And Study Rooms, Michael W. Johnson, Stephen C. Finlay
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article details the utilization of student workers to conduct patron population surveys of library computer banks and study rooms at the Clark Memorial Library at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth Ohio. The number of patrons was counted by student employees at hourly intervals over three ten-day periods, garnering 9,295 separate observations with little interruption in day-to-day work flow. The survey resulted in a far more detailed portrait of library usage than is possible with simple gate statistics. Results indicate that usage is heaviest from Monday through Wednesday for both computer banks and study rooms and lowest on Friday and …

Love In The Stacks: Popular Romance Collection Development In Academic Libraries, Crystal Goldman
Faculty and Staff Publications
This article begins to define the core collection of Popular Romance Studies, and discusses the likelihood of academic libraries allocating monetary funds for collecting in this discipline when universities do not have a major program to support in the area. An analysis of Library Science literature shows the justifications librarians use for why they do or do not collect popular culture materials, such as romance novels and films. Multiple arguments are presented for how popular romance should be classified within collections when libraries acquire material in this field. Finally, recommendations are made regarding how best to assure ongoing access to …

An Exploratory Study On The Relationship Between Creativity, Religion, And Religiosity, Kim-Lien Thi Nguyen
An Exploratory Study On The Relationship Between Creativity, Religion, And Religiosity, Kim-Lien Thi Nguyen
Master's Theses
Religiosity and religion are often said to be negative influences on one's creativity level. Creativity and religiosity have been looked at as a single dimension, which is a simplistic view. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between creativity and religiosity using scales that measure each construct multidimensionally. Religiosity was measured by one's level of inclusion of transcendent reality and symbolic interpretation of religious content. Creativity was evaluated in terms of fluency, originality, elaboration, abstractness, and resistance to premature closure. It was predicted that participants who exhibit high inclusion of transcendence and literal interpretation of religious content …
If Not Here, Then Where?: An Investigation Of Faith In The Public Speaking Classroom, Mary Anne Sunseri
If Not Here, Then Where?: An Investigation Of Faith In The Public Speaking Classroom, Mary Anne Sunseri
Master's Theses
Scholarly research suggests that faith and spirituality are relevant topics of conversation in colleges, but some argue that the separation of church and state inhibits the inclusion of discussions of faith and spirituality in the classrooms of secular education institutions. Such a disconnect might communicate that a person's spirituality and system of values have no place in the academic classroom or in an ethical circumstance. The purpose of this research was to enter into discussion with the instructors of undergraduate public speaking classes to discern whether and how they navigate communication about faith in their classrooms. It is crucial for …
