Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Libraries play a major role in providing quality education and research support in any higher education institution. They serve information to the students and faculty. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to assess and accredit higher education institutions in India. NAAC for the past eight years has been stressing on library as one of the important parameters to assess a higher education institution. This literature review explores the publications which deal with the relationship between NAAC and the libraries. The selected literatures are published between 2009 and 2023.

Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) are important for maternal health care especially in Africa’s low-income areas. Without doubt, the relevance of TBAs in developing countries such as Nigeria is not expected to reduce in the foreseeable future. The knowledge of traditional birth attendants will continue to be needed and considering the tacit nature of their knowledge, there is a need to preserve the knowledge in this profession and promote sharing of best practices to prevent maternal mortality issues. This study investigated the knowledge sharing (KS) and referral practices of TBAs in low-income urban areas of South-west Nigeria. Qualitative approach was adopted …

Reconnoitering Generative Deep Learning Through Image Generation From Text, Vishnu S. Pendyala, Vigneshkumar Thangarajan
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A picture is worth a thousand words goes the well-known adage. Generating images from text understandably has many uses. In this chapter, the authors explore a state-of-the-art generative deep learning method to produce synthetic images and a new better way for evaluating the same. The approach focuses on synthesizing high-resolution images with multiple objects present in an image, given the textual description of the images. The existing literature uses object pathway GAN (OP-GAN) to automatically generate images from text. The work described in this chapter attempts to improvise the discriminator network from the original implementation using OP-GAN. This eventually helps …

Misinformation Containment Using Nlp And Machine Learning: Why The Problem Is Still Unsolved, Vishnu S. Pendyala
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Despite the increased attention and substantial research into it claiming outstanding successes, the problem of misinformation containment has only been growing in the recent years with not many signs of respite. Misinformation is rapidly changing its latent characteristics and spreading vigorously in a multi-modal fashion, sometimes in a more damaging manner than viruses and other malicious programs on the internet. This chapter examines the existing research in natural language processing and machine learning to stop the spread of misinformation, analyzes why the research has not been practical enough to be incorporated into social media platforms, and provides future research directions. …

Reaction of nickel and zinc triflates with the tridentate leucoverdazyl 1-isopropyl-3,5-di (2′-pyridyl)-6-oxo-2H-tetrazine (dipyvdH) and triethylamine resulted in the neutral coordination compounds M(dipyvd)2 (M = Ni,Zn). In acetonitrile, both compounds undergo two one electron oxidation processes, Zn (dipyvd)2 at −0.28 V and −0.12 V and Ni(dipyvd)2 at −0.32 V and −0.15 V vs ferrocene/ferricenium. Oxidations are ligand based resulting in an intermediate mixed valence species and a cationic bis(verdazyl) compound respectively. Oxidation of the ligand changes a localized, antiaromatic, non-planar 8π electron anion to a planar, delocalized 7π electron radical. The change in ligand structure results in an increase in the …

Trafficking and exploitation for sex or labor affects millions of persons worldwide. To improve healthcare for these patients, in late 2018 new ICD-10 medical diagnosis codes were implemented in the US. These 13 codes include diagnosis of adult and child sexual exploitation, adult and child labor exploitation, and history of exploitation. Here we report on a database search of a large US health insurer that contained approximately 47.1 million patients and 0.9 million provider organizations, not limited to large medical systems. We reported on any diagnosis with the new codes between 2018-09-01 and 2022-09-01. The dataset was found to contain …

SIRT1 is an NAD+-dependent protein deacetylase that has been shown to play a significant role in many biological pathways, such as insulin secretion, tumor formation, lipid metabolism, and neurodegeneration. There is great interest in understanding the regulation of SIRT1 to better understand SIRT1-related diseases and to better design therapeutic approaches that target SIRT1. There are many known protein and small molecule activators and inhibitors of SIRT1. One well-studied SIRT1 regulator, resveratrol, has historically been regarded as a SIRT1 activator, however, recent studies have shown that it can also act as an inhibitor depending on the identity of the peptide substrate. …

The novel coronavirus caused a lifestyle shift, and the acceptance of offsite financial transactions is still a case for financial technology (fintech). Mobile financial transactions continue to be at an all-time low, and financial institutions are developing approaches for financial digitalization acceptability. The present study attempts to understand users’ motivations for fintech adoption. The technology acceptance model (TAM) and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTUAT) were utilized to uncover the rationale behind technology adoption. This study explored the drivers inhibiting the adoption of financial technology in Nigeria during the pandemic. A machine learning (ML) approach was …

In this study, observations of live fuel moisture content (LFMC) for predominantly sampled fuels in six distinct regions of California were examined from 2000 to 2021. To gather the necessary data, an open-access database called the Fuel Moisture Repository (FMR), was developed. By harnessing the extensive data aggregation and query capabilities of the FMR, which draws upon the National Fuel Moisture Database, valuable insights into the live fuel moisture seasonality were obtained. Specifically, our analysis revealed a distinct downtrend in LFMC across all regions, with the exception of the two Northernmost regions. The uptrends of LFMC seen in those regions …

Never Lose Your Ecg: A Novel Key Generation And Authentication Scheme For Implantable Medical Devices, Nima Karimian, Gokay Saldamli, Younghee Park, Victor Lui
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, and insulin pumps, play a crucial role in monitoring patients' vital signs within healthcare systems. However, these networked devices are susceptible to external attacks and breaches of trust, hindering the potential innovation and social benefits of eHealth services. To address these concerns, we propose a novel ECG-based key generation scheme and blockchain-based authentication protocol to build a trustworthy healthcare service under any situation. The key will be extracted in a single heartbeat using fiducial features. Compared with the existing works, the proposed key generation achieves the most efficient and secure method by …
