Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Since the widespread adoption of social media in the 2010s, many libraries and archives have begun to use social media engagement as part of their outreach. While likes, retweets, and follows can be easily measured, there are also qualitative aspects of social media engagement that can illuminate other aspects of repositories' social media communication with their users. This article looks at historical trends in qualitative analysis of social media and suggests ways in which libraries and archives can incorporate qualitative analysis into their social media strategy.

Battery Electric Vehicles: Travel Characteristics Of Early Adopters, Yunwen Feng, Jean-Daniel Saphores, Hilary Nixon, Monica Ramirez Ibarra
Mineta Transportation Institute
Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), …

American anthropology is engaged in significant self-reckonings that call for big changes to how anthropology is practiced. These include (1) recognizing and taking seriously the demands to decolonize the ways research is done, (2) addressing precarious employment in academic anthropology, and (3) creating a discipline better positioned to respond to urgent societal needs. A central role for ethnographic methods training is a thread that runs through each of these three reckonings. This article, written by a team of cultural, biocultural, and linguistic anthropologists, outlines key connections between ethnographic methods training and the challenges facing anthropology. We draw on insights from …

Generalized Choi–Davis–Jensen’S Operator Inequalities And Their Applications, Shih Yu Chang, Yimin Wei
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The original Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequality, known for its extensive applications in various scientific and engineering fields, has inspired researchers to pursue its generalizations. In this study, we extend the Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequality by introducing a nonlinear map instead of a normalized linear map and generalize the concept of operator convex functions to include any continuous function defined within a compact region. Notably, operators can be matrices with structural symmetry, enhancing the scope and applicability of our results. The Stone–Weierstrass theorem and the Kantorovich function play crucial roles in the formulation and proof of these generalized Choi–Davis–Jensen’s inequalities. Furthermore, we demonstrate an application …

The Cascadia Innovation Corridor: The Role Of Social Entrepreneurship In The Making Of A North American Innovative Cross-Border Region, Kathrine Richardson
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
There remains a dearth of literature dedicated to urban core-to-core cross-border regions, especially ones described as highly innovative. Hence, there is a growing need to advance the concept of a cross-border region, especially through the lens of clusters and smart system innovation policy by considering what might be the role of social entrepreneurship regarding its development. Thus, this article focuses on how an innovative cross-border region may be emerging between the bi-national Cascadia region, and analyzes the role of corporate driven social entrepreneurship in its advancement.

Unlocking Dividends: The Impact Of Managerial Social Capital On International Corporate Payouts, Douglas J. Cumming, David Javakhadze, Tijana Rajkovic
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We present robust international evidence that managerial social capital is a significant determinant of dividend policy worldwide. Our analysis reveals that social capital mitigates information asymmetry and financial constraints, thereby resulting in increased dividend payouts. The effect is particularly pronounced for firms anticipating high cash retention costs. These findings are consistent with the pecking-order perspective of corporate payouts. Moreover, we identify a significant moderating role of shareholder legal protection and national cultural characteristics. Our results remain robust across alternative model specifications and tests for endogeneity.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Deep learning struggles with unsupervised tasks like community detection in networks. This work proposes the Enhanced Community Detection with Structural Information VGAE (VGAE-ECF) method, a method that enhances variational graph autoencoders (VGAEs) for community detection in large networks. It incorporates community structure information and edge weights alongside traditional network data. This combined input leads to improved latent representations for community identification via K-means clustering. We perform experiments and show that our method works better than previous approaches of community-aware VGAEs.

Comparison Of Likelihood Ratios From Probabilistic Genotyping For Two-Person Mixtures Across Different Assays And Instruments, Dennis Mcnevin, Mark Barash
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Continuous probabilistic genotyping (PG) provides a means to estimate the probative value of DNA mixtures tendered as evidence in court and subject to alternative propositions about the contributors to the mixtures. The weight of that evidence, however, may be valued differently, depending on which forensic laboratory undertook the DNA analysis. There is a need, therefore, to have a means for the comparison of likelihood ratios (LRs) generated by continuous PG amongst different laboratories for the same initial DNA sample. Such a comparison would enable the courts and the public to make judgements about the reliability of this type of evidence. …

Confucianism Embodied: An “Interdisciplinary” Approach To Comparative Political Theory, Qi Jing
Confucianism Embodied: An “Interdisciplinary” Approach To Comparative Political Theory, Qi Jing
Comparative Philosophy
This article articulates and defends an “interdisciplinary” approach to Confucian political theory and presents Confucianism as a living, dynamic entity rather than merely a reservoir of ideas contained within a set of texts. It argues for a methodology that transcends traditional textual analysis, advocating for an intersectional approach that melds normative, emancipatory, and practical dimensions. This approach seeks to capture the evolving essence of Confucianism as influenced by cultural, institutional, and individual interactions. It also promotes a “distant reading” to examine not only texts and historical debates but also institutional changes, power dynamics, and guiding principles within Confucianized societies. The …
